hair metal?.......2006-06-04
I DONT THINK SO!! These guys are far beyong hair metal - they are true heavy metal and not that false metal stuff - this stuff is actually rockin' and heavy. W.A.S.P. gets unfortunate genre-ing of hair metal just because of what they look but these guys bang their heads and go crazy! Just like Motley Crue, they are HEAVY METAL and not HAIR METAL!!! Get it right people - it's about the music man
WASP Rules!.......2005-07-08
Vintage WASP! Any heavy-metal fan has to have this. Great stuff! Love it!
rust in peace beloved metal..........2005-05-14
No one who wasn't alive when this album was released should leave a review, because this was symbolic of the period in rock-n-roll (call it hair-band, I prefer to call it Metal) that a lot of us grew up listening to. Comparing this to modern metal is like comparing Johnny Cash to Alan Jackson...each is great in its own time, in its own way! And if you are thinking of buying this album, DO IT!!! it rocks! and also pick up the first album (self titled) WASP. I snuck into the office in high school, locked the door, and played the whole song "school daze" over the intercom before they stopped me. Later!
G00D 80's Metal.......2005-01-31
One of the few 80's Metal albums where every song is good - this album brings back memories! Even the non singles off this album are good. If you like 80's hair metal, you need to have this album.
this is for the wild children only!.......2004-12-04
when you put this album on, look out for flying rump roasts! seriously, because your enraged neighbors will be throwing rump roasts or anything else at you that they can find. and original guitarist chris holmes was knocked out by one in europe when blackie said they were going to play animal (f--- like a beast). to sum it all up, this is a nasty a$$ band. if you like metal and hard rock, this definitely belongs in your collection, but don't get it if you like softy crap like van halen.

The reasOn.........2007-07-09
I'm writing a review of this cd and not the release of "Inside The Electric CircUs" without "The Headless Children" is the economic value of purchasing both albums at once.SOngs such as "Mantronic" lead you into the Sci Fi world of Blackie and Co.."Restless Gypsy"'s a wilD time..Sexy ("95 Nasty"'S a shout out to woman if yOu ask me..)Sexy cd,original solos and chord combinAtions (No McDonalds "Combo meal" i.e routine daily arrangements here..)Beautiful acoustic mixed with electric guitArs..BoB Saget left me as My Amazon fRiend,I want him back..So Anyways,Blackie and company do a fine job there.I guess I'll mention "The Headless Children" as well, although "The Electric Circus"'s enough to base a five star rating on.I enjoyed that album also.I recall it had more of a classic rock feel to it.Really..The "Electric Circus" cassette is what I base the reviews rAtings on.
fine metal for a bargain price.......2006-06-20
The price of this collection is excellent for two above-average metal albums. And one must remember that the music itself is the real value here, because the collection's packaging is ugly, the original albums' artwork is poorly represented, and the few lines of notes (brief description of Blackie's career and the band's fortunes through the eighties) are unsatisfying. The comments particularly on the two albums here (Inside the Electric Circus and The Headless Children) are misleading, apparently written by someone who did not actually listen to the albums.
The music itself, though, is another story. Inside the Electric Circus, W.A.S.P.'s third album, remains a mild disappointment after the excellence of the first two (W.A.S.P. and The Last Command), but it nonetheless bears repeated listening and holds up better, twenty-plus years after its initial release, than most of the other metal released at that same time. Generally, the songs are a bit shallow, and the hooks aren't as catchy as those on W.A.S.P.'s first two efforts, but it still rocks, and occasionally (for example, on "Restless Gypsy") the album brings the same kind of shivers as those inspired by earlier songs like "The Last Command" or "L.O.V.E. Machine."
The Headless Children, on the other hand, represents a long musical stride forward for Blackie and the band. In emotional tone and musical form, it builds on the foundation formed by earlier successes such as "Sleeping in the Fire" and "Widowmaker" and is easily the most lyrically mature and musically ambitious album that W.A.S.P. had produced to that point. Stressing politics and emotions over sex, and frequently eschewing the standard binary song structure in favor of more complex arrangements, The Headless Children is the rarest of metal beasts: the heavy, head-banging album that actually has things to say *without* becoming pretentious, boring, or preachy.
Short answer: This is a damned fine collection.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Who's the Brian Wilson of tomorrow? If this elector's vote counts, it'll be XTC's Andy Partridge, whose studio genius and crafty pop prowess is unparalleled over a career spanning four decades and 13 studio albums (XTC even does an impressive Beach Boys impression as their alter egos, the Dukes of Stratosphear). Wasp Star: Apple Venus, Vol. 2 does the first volume one better, adding XTC's penchant for perplexing pop to their gorgeous pastoral inclinations. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
Sidelined by a decade-long "strike" against their former record label, XTC's Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding nonetheless kept themselves busy writing songs and recording demos during the 1990s. The resulting body of work was divvied up stylistically, with the more pastoral/orchestral pieces consigned to Apple Venus Volume One (and Homespun, its accompanying home-demo collection). The brash electric guitar flourish that launches Wasp Star's "Playground" heralds a collection that leans toward the jangly guitars and jagged rhythms of the band's Black Sea and English Settlement prime. Adorned with ornate harmonic flourishes and their trademark pop sophistication, Wasp Star finds creative mainstay Andy Partridge in a distinctly upbeat, romantically intoxicated state of mind (as witnessed by the virtually irony-free "Stupidly Happy"), yet one in which history-bred suspicions die hard. It's Moulding who seems the most melancholy here, with the gentle romantic prodding of "In Another Life" and in the downright gloomy take on his hometown's future, "Boarded Up." Known for occasional pointed social jabs, XTC's focus has become a bit more philosophical with age, Partridge and Moulding perhaps gleaning the wisdom that the hardest battles are sometimes fought on the home front. But if music this joyous and rewarding is the result, it's been the noblest of struggles. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
'Wasp Star' is the eclectic follow up to the critically acclaimed 'Apple Venus Volume 1', featuring the return to the incisive guitar pop that made XTC legends. 2000 TVT release.

No Sting in the Tail!.......2006-08-30
After waiting the better part of a decade for a new XTC album to come along, two emerged in quick succession. Andy Partridge initially conceived Apple Venus as a double album, the second part of which would be more rocky and electric. In the end this second part was released as Wasp Star and too be fair is a mixed bag. It opens with some fan pleasing tracks in PLAYGROUND and the wonderfully commercial STUPIDLY HAPPY. These songs are impossible to dislike and PLAYGROUND builds on the similar feel to HARVEST FESTIVAL on Apple Venus. Unfortunately Moulding then weighs in with his first of three sub-standard efforts. Although BOARDED UP is suitably atmospheric and more stripped down than the rest, it has a slow plodding and miserable nature not in keeping with the generally upbeat mood of the album. Partridge is definitely on form and certainly on WE'RE ALL LIGHT, the band sound as youthful as they ever have. However one area in which there is a definite lack is inspired guitar solos. This used to be Dave Gregory's territory, but unfortunately he left the band during the Apple Venus sessions. The result is that a number of the songs are oddly flat and meandering with seemingly no destination. There is a general listlessness and lifelessness to a number of the compositions, which would have benefited from the talents of Mr. Gregory, whose contribution to XTC I have always felt has been somewhat under rated and under appreciated. This to date remains XTC's last album, in 6 years we have had a number of pointless cash in releases and Partridge's FUZZY WARBLES series. Could WASP STAR be the last XTC album ever, if so it would be a somewhat under whelming end to a fascinating and brilliant career.
As stripped back as "Apple Venus" wasn't........2006-07-28
"Wasp Star: Apple Venus Part 2" was XTC's second album after their "strike" from recording and break from Virgin Records-- whereas "Apple Venus" took their growing arrangements to its logical conclusion in an orchestral setting, "Wasp Star" is a return to guitar-based rock, moreso perhaps than anything they'd done since the early '80s. Admittedly, I tend to prefer the work of both guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding lush and overarranged, so I'm a bit less in love with this record than I am with a number of their others, but nonetheless, "Wasp Star" proves to be a decent album in its own right.
Opening with a churning electric guitar-driven slice of bright pop with nice two part harmonies ("Playground"), this is clearly a drastic departure from "Apple Venus". Partridge's compositions tend to be pretty straight riff-based stuff, relying on great hooks to see them through (sharp pop "Stupidly Happy", fractured country blues "Wounded Horse"). Moulding seems to be the more experimental of the pair-- "Boarded Up" is built around space between rhythmic acoustic guitars, drums and synths and "Standing In For Joe" is a sing-songy, quirky guitar plus strings arrangement (with an equally odd lyric to match). The two offset each other nicely-- unlike "Apple Venus" where cohesiveness seemed key, here putting disparaging elements next to each other seems to drive it.
With this many moods, there is more room for less than interesting stuff-- some of it just doesn't make a huge impression (goofy riff based rock "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love"), some of it's just not terribly memorable ("You and the Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful"). None of it's bad, Partridge and Moulding are too brilliant songwriters for that, it's just that a lot of it doesn't grab you.
In a way this review is unfair-- anyon else did this album, I'd probably give it a better rating, but XTC has such a superb catalog that I can't help but compare and certainly one can't help but wonder what this could have been with the support of departed guitarist Dave Gregory. All this aside, it's a fine album, it's just that XTC has done better.
Stupidly Happy -- Desceptively Clever.......2005-08-04
After being "on strike" from their contract with Virgin for about seven years, this band finally came back with two releases in quick succession. I was disappointed with the pastoral, orchestral extravaganza that was Apple Venus vol.1, but perhaps that was just because I was expecting a continuation of the pop tradition of previous albums. Vol.2 or "Wasp Star" restores my faith. If you liked "Nonsuch" and "Oranges and Lemons" you will also love this. It is the most accessable thing they have ever done and it is instantly likeable.
In fact, it is SO instantly likeable that there is a danger that after hearing it only twice, you will start skipping tracks because your mind is going "Yeah, I love this but I know how it goes..." in the way you might skip an old Beatles classic. However this, like the Beatles, is not "disposable pop" -- each song is a melodic lolly you can enjoy over and over again, each time you can suck out a new nuance of pop flavour that you may not have noticed the first time around. There are hooks galore in these songs, and they get their hooks into you nice and early.
When I say "they" what I really mean is just two guys: Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding. Dave Gregory quit during Apple Venus vol.1. Hence we are left only with the two songwiters who were with the band since it's inception. They haven't played live for over twenty years, so can we really call them a "band" anymore? It's just two songwriters pissing about in the studio with the occasional studio musician. In regards to the way they work, they are now the British equivalent to Steely Dan. Same thing across the Atlantic: Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, reclusive studio freaks. The similarity is only in the WAY they work, not the end result, for there is no musical similarity (except maybe "Standing in for Joe" ;-) and they don't share writing credit either. So "XTC" is now just a recording banner, a "brand name" -- but it is a good brand, and I love their product.
"Playground" -- opens with a strong riff (you'll get that in track two, too!), and explores the same theme he so eloquently summed up in his hit "Senses Working Overtime". "You may leave school but it never leaves you..." he sings. Except now he's an "old" man, and his teenage daughter is singing the backing vocals!!
"Stupidly Happy" is built on a repetitive Stones riff and is highly infectious. A "happy virus" that you think you have "kicked" after two listens but, the next day you will re-catch it. It may be "stupid," but spread it around anyway, and make the world a better place. The simplicity of the song is desceptive. The riff repeats over and over for the life of the song, without variation. That's stupid, right? Not really, for all the variation is provided by everything else: the bass line cranks up a cog, introduce another percussive element, the dexterously-placed acoustic guitar arpeggio -- these all come into play along the way to give the song all the color and tone it needs while still being driven along by that one infectious repetitive riff. A cleverly-constructed piece of "stupid" pop by one of the best in the business. One of the best songs in this current offering.
"In Another Life" -- this is the first of Colin's songs for this album, and the lyrics are hilarious. Both these guys have a great sense of humour. And on what other pop CD will you find the main instrument being a harmonium? Actually, I initially thought it was a mouth organ -- apparently there's a difference!! It sounds delightfully eccentric -- just like these two guys!
"Boarded Up" -- another song from Colin. It's got to be the most "woodiest" sounding track I've ever heard. I can almost smell the maplewood (or whatever)!! It sounds like they are literally banging on a board for percussion. In a sense, thet is exactly what they are doing: they are tapping on the sound-board of an acoustic guitar.
"I'm the Man Who Murdered Love" -- a typically unique point of view from a unique musical mind. Starting with the chorus is a trick invented by the Beatles (on cue, let us sing: "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah..."). However the other half of the trick would be knowing when to apply it. As one of the best song-craftsmen in the business, AP knows instinctively when to do it, and when not to. Not only is the chorus incredibly catchy, but the opening line (and title) is intrigueing and thus immediately grabs the attention of the listener. However the verses MAKE the song. Without the substance behind the lyrics, this song would be vapid. Indeed, anyone who didn't listen closely and only judged the song on the chorus would soon dismiss this song as trite. It is one thing to come up with an intrigueing title and catchy chorus. The real skill is making it come together with the compelling and perverse logic of the lyrics in each verse. Without that, one would soon tire of the chorus. In lesser hands, this song-idea could have been a dud, but AP wouldn't bother recording it unless he struck just the right balance and placed all components just where they should be. Whether it is a repeated riff ("Stupidly Happy") or a repeated phrase ("I'm the man who murdered love") you've got to listen beyond the desceptive simplicity to appreciate the brilliant songcraft on display here.
"We're All Light" -- you don't hear many songs these days which incorporates the theremin, especially in something which otherwise sounds more conventional. One of the more musically-
sophisticated songs on the album.
"Standing in for Joe" -- Hmmm...he's "playing all the parts," including "switching off the bedroom lights." How kind of him to go out of his way in doing his mate a favour by looking after his girlfriend so attentively!!! There's Colin's devilish sense of humour again!
"Wounded Horse" -- the result of what happens to the heart of the boyfriend when he finds out what his "mate" has been up to. This is yet another one of Andy's "divorce songs," probably written around the same time as "Your Dictionary" (from "Apple Venus vol.1") and "Young Marrieds" (from "Fuzzy Warbles"). He sings it like he knows what he's talking about. The final horse-like exhale after the completion of the song is typical of their attention to detail in the studio. He will gallop and jump that extra hurdle to get things "just right" -- I wonder how many takes it took to get "just the right tone" in the exhaled breath!!
"You and the Clouds will still be Beautiful" -- Sounds like something Sting would do, only Andy writes a better Sting song than Sting himself!! As musically sophisticated as "We're All Light".
"Church of Women" -- there's that unique point of view popping it's partridge-head up again. Possibly my favourite song on the album. Finally, a sermon I can relate to!! This is one church I'd like to attend. My family will be so pleased that I have finally come back to the fold!! "I'm on my knees but dancing..."
"The Wheel and the Maypole" -- Andy always has something special for the last track on an XTC album and this one does not disappoint. A truly strange song. I can't imagine where else they could have put it in the track listing except for here at the end. The maypole spins the wheel of life, life is quite a spin, but in the end we get flung off like a frisbe into the ether! "Everything decays" he sings in a bouncy, joyous tone. He is singing about death and decay in the most uplifting and accepting manner. Accept death and enjoy the spin of life while you are here. The universe itself will die, so don't feel too bad. In it's own way, this is a very life-affirming song, and a very apt and upbeat ending to the album....if not the universe, just yet ;-)
Stick a fork in it, XTC are done.......2005-07-14
I've been a fan since Go2 and managed to see the band on the Drums and Wires and Black Sea tours. I've got every bit of recorded output from XTC minus a couple of singles and now I'm finished with them. Without Dave Gregory the band has managed to put out an album of half-baked orchestral music that sounded like rejects from the Nonsuch sessions, and with Wasp Star a pale imitation of the great guitar pop band XTC used to be. Now I know what Dave Gregory did for XTC. Without him Wasp Star sounds like unfinished demo tracks: thin and underarranged. His guitar and keyboard playing would have greatly improved this album. But its just not the icing that's at fault, the cake isn't very good either. Not one of the songs on Wasp Star could be considered among either Andy Partridges or Colin Mouldings best work, far from it. Wasp Star reflects a band in creative decline that doesn't seem to care about music as they did in the past. If they have any passion left it's not for music, and certainly not reflected by their last two recordings. It's not as though Wasp Star is a terrible album, it's just that for a band of the calibre of XTC its a tremendous let down both musically and lyrically. The seven year long strike from Virgin records seems to have killed whatever creative wave they were riding after Nonsuch, and the evidence could not be any more glaring or obvious than the mediocraties that are Wasp Star and Apple Venus. Everything has a finite life and though XTC's corpse is still twitching, they are a bloodless imitation of what they once were.
Heartbreaking.......2004-09-03
I never imagined XTC were capable of producing an album this utterly bland and unimaginative. They were once the most vital recording artists around, seemingly reinventing pop music at every turn. But this? It pains me too much to talk about. It's the only XTC CD I couldn't bear to keep in my collection.
For the uninitiated, I'd suggest Skylarking or English Settlement. But for those with a taste for the weird, I'd recommend GO 2 or Drums and Wires for the true adventure of their creative abilities. This one we can, hopefully, put behind us.

ZZZZZZZZZZZ.......2005-03-12
I've tried a few times but I just can't make it thru this CD. While I'm listening to it I find myself saying out loud "This is BORING". The story is dull, the music is dull. I got really tired of hearing "where is the love to shelter me?" The drummer sounds like he's beating on garbage cans half the time. I didn't care for his singing either, it was too whiny. I didn't think there was even 1 song I'd ever care to hear again. I can't see me ever putting this CD on again. However, a couple of other people really liked it as you can see from their reviews. I think the only people this might appeal to are really young people who haven't experienced much and think this junk is meaningful. There are HUNDREDS of MUCH better CDs than this dog.
essential WASP.......2003-12-09
This is the greatest album by WASP... anyone really familiar with their history knows this. Personal, deep, beautiful, heartwrenching, melodic, catchy, rocking, heavy... TIMELESS. What else can I say? Chances are, when you listen to this album, you just might see a bit of your own personality in it -- I know I did. And, hey, isn't that what makes music great in the first place?
THE BEST WASP ALBUM.......1999-12-16
This one goes in my TOP 5 top-to-bottom all-time favorite albums along with: Judas Priest-Screaming For Vengeance, Iron Maiden-Somewhere In Time, Pretty Maids-Future World, Def Leppard-High'n'Dry. I own well over 1000 cds, so these 5 must be special.
A masterpiece of rock!.......1999-09-26
The Crimson Idol is special in more than just the obvious sence as the songs have been written so that the listener is able to relate to them in some way, Blackie has written them from different perspectives so that everyone's experiance of 'The Crimson Idol' is unique. That truely takes a certain amount of genius!
What a masterpiece!!!.......1999-09-16
This album shows the true musical genius that is Blackie Lawless. If you are into Hard Rock/Metal music, YOU MUST OWN THIS CD!!!....This thing is wild and beautiful at the same time...It sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. ***** isn't enough to rate it....GET IT!!!

What a debut!.......2007-05-29
Now, I'm not just giving this album the full five-star rating because I am a huge W.A.S.P. fan; but because I honestly believe this album deserves five stars! This album stands for everything that metal believed in during the 1980's. Pressured by the ever agressive PMRC, bands throughout the country were using them as a tool to gain more noteriety. This is exactly what W.A.S.P. did for their debut album, and look where they are now!
1. Animal (F*ck Like a Beast) - When I first heard this song (on a Vh1 special on the history of metal) I was instantly hooked. This song is the absolute best way for a heavy shock-rock newly formed band like W.A.S.P. to debut. The song actually gained more fame because it wasn't allowed to be put on the original album back in 1984. Genius marketing ploy by the boys there. Awesome song with just fun, raw lyrics and fun, raw energy! 5/5
2. I Wanna Be Somebody - The "first" single from the album. Again just pure raw emotion by Blackie and the boys. This is a song you can just rock to, and is also a song that gets you ready to conquor the world! 5/5
3. L.O.V.E. Machine - I first heard this song from the band Fozzy and their cover of it. Finally getting to hear it from W.A.S.P. themselves, it is another good song. Straight up rocking. My only gripe is that the chorus itself can become a bit repetitive towards the end. Good song nonetheless. 4/5
4. The Flame - This is another song that is just awesome! It has a nice hook so listerners can sing along to it and not really dig into what the song may be about. Catchy lyrics, and Chris Holmes does an amazing job on this track really separating himself from Blackie. 4.5/5
5. B.A.D. - The band really likes the use of periods within their music. Again, this song keeps up the straight rocking vibe. It will have you banging your head and pumping your fists in the air no matter where you are. Awesome track. 5/5
6. School Daze - This is, in my opinion, the weakest song on the album. I understand that it is just a straight up rock anthem to kids suffering at the confines of school, but the song itself doesn't really go anywhere! One good thing about it is Chris Holmes guitar playing which distracts the listener from the repetitive lyrics. 3/5
7. Hellion - This song took me a couple of listens to get into, but once I did I can honestly say it's not half bad. Awesome guitar and bass playing, and the drum work continues toi be flawless. 3.5/5
8. Sleeping (In The Fire) - The first official "ballad" from the band, and the obligatory ballad to include on every album. Shows a slightly softer side from the band and proves that they can do it. The song does however maintain the hard edge that the band is known for and therefore this "ballad" really separates itself from other known ballads; and really the album as a whole. 4/5
9. On Your Knees - Jumping right back into the hard and heavy shock-rock, this song brings the album back around to its original focus; non-stop rock! May take time to appreciate, but is a good and fun song overall 3.5/5
10. Tormentor - This is a catchy song! This all forms around the chorus in which Blackie screams with all his power! Another track on the album that is just fun to rock out to. 4/5
11. The Torture Never Stops - This song in my mind, picks up right where "Tormentor" leaves off. Awesome guitar and bass playing here; really ties the album together. Sogn does have a slightly repetitive feel to it, but is catchy nonetheless. 3.5/5
12. Show No Mercy [b-side] - A bonus track here and a b-side at that. Really stays with the overall theme of the album; showing that Blackie and the boys will "Show No Mercy" to anyone who may critisize them and their music. Awesome song. 4/5
13. Paint It Black [b-side] - Another b-side, and a cover of a Rolling Stones classic. Although many covers tend to be a less formal an somewhat watered-down version of the original, W.A.S.P. does an amazing job here and shows they do belong within the elite group of metals very best! 4/5
There you have it; the classic debut of W.A.S.P. one of the hardest most interesting bands in history. They got the attention they needed for this album to become a success, and although Blackie is the only original member left... we can see how far the band has come since the shock-rock days. A classic album that should be owned by all metal fans throughout the world.
WASP FIRST STING STILL STINGS!.......2006-12-14
THE DEBUT ALBUM OF WASP IS A METAL MASTERPIECE AND STILL
SOUNDS AS THOUGH IT WAS MADE YESTERDAY. THIS IS ONE OF THE
FEW REAL METAL BANDS OF THE 80'S THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN MUCH
BIGGER THAN THE MTV GARBAGE. EVERY SONG IS A KILLER AND
COULD BE A GREATEST HITS ALBUM. BLACKIE LAWLESS IS ONE
OF THE GREATEST SINGER/SONGWRITERS/FRONTMAN OF ALL TIME.
SORRY TO THE GUY WHO WROTE THE BAD REVIEW BUT HE'S DEAD
WRONG AND OBVIOUSLY ISN'T A REAL METAL FAN. SO IF YOU LOVE
CLASSIC HARD ROCK LIKE MOTORHEAD, LIZZY, UFO, JUDAS PRIEST,
IRON MAIDEN, DEEP PURPLE, BLACKFOOT ETC.... THIS IS FOR YOU!
Overlooked Classic??? Fiery Debut??? PLEASE!!!!!!.......2006-07-14
I don't enjoy doing this, but someone needs to bring some sanity to this discussion. The five star reviews for this album are clearly based on nostalgia and not substance. WASP, simply put, is not a band that has stood the test of time. As musicians, they are an EXTREMELY average band, while Blackie Lawless has got to be one of the most annoying frontmen in metal history. And don't give me that "well, back in the day these guys were killer" nonsense. BS!!!! Back in the day, that is, early to mid 80s, you had plenty of other metal bands (Metallica, Slayer, Mercyful Fate, Iron Maiden, just to name a few) that made these guys look as much as a joke then as they do today. Along with Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister and the like, this stuff is the reason that a movie like Spinal Tap is so popular (and yes, I love Tap to). Ultimately, however, I am fair; I would have given this one star only, but the album has some pretty catchy hooks and sing along choruses. Nevertheless, please folks, do yourselves a favor: stop living in the past with B-rate quality bands like WASP, and spend your money on bands that have made a real contribution to heavy metal music.
Winged Assasins with a serious sting.......2006-04-13
this album came out in 1984 and blew lots of people away...... and 22years later it still sounds great..classic after classic the whole way through.''' this is a must have for everyone............get it
An overlooked classic metal masterpiece.......2005-04-12
WASP (1984.) WASP's first album.
In the early eighties, southern California was filled with up and coming young heavy metal bands who were trying to make it big. When Quiet Riot got a record contract and their Metal Health album hit number one on the charts, record companies starting signing these metal bands left and right. One of the California metal acts of the day that got signed was WASP, a quartet consisting of singer/bass guitarist Blackie Lawless, lead guitarists Chris Holmes and Randy Piper, and drummer Tony Richards. The group was not like their peers, in that they had a menacing image. Unlike their peers who dressed girly, WASP preferred an image not unlike that of Judas Priest. While those other bands kept up their "glam" image, WASP decorated their stages with horrifying images (they really don't fit the glam metal tag that well. The band was also much heavier and more aggressive than similar bands of that setting. I had heard of the band long ago, but for some reason, pretty much overlooked them entirely. But thanks to a friend of mine, I managed to get a copy of their debut album. Read on for my review of it.
To put it simply, this album blew me away. I was expecting WASP to be "just another glam metal band", but really, they are so much more. The band is much heavier than their peers, and if you watch any concert footage of the band, just looking at the stage will certainly indicate that they were NOT glam. The band's musical stylings are their greatest asset, being similar to those of Quiet Riot, but much more heavy and angry in the way they are delivered. This is an impressive album from start to finish, as you'll find out when you listen to it. The album features ten tracks, including the band's classic anthem and first big hit, I Wanna Be Somebody. That masterpiece alone is reason enough to buy the album - and the other tracks are certainly no slouches either. No classic metal collection is complete without WASP's debut.
WASP's albums got remastered and rereleased, and the reissued versions feature bonus tracks! In the case of the debut album, you get three hard-to-find tracks. One thing I didn't like is that they put the first of which BEFORE the album cuts and the other two AFTER - they should all just have been put after. But I'm not complaining. These bonus tracks are excellent, and they make the reissue all the more worthwhile. And besides, the track that they have leading off the album now was originally going to be the first track, so I guess I can understand them doing this.
WASP rocks. And on this debut album the band proves it time and time again. There are plenty of excellent classic metal acts out there, and it's really a shame that, for the most part, WASP got overlooked in favor of other, more popular bands of the day. WASP was every bit as talented, if not more talented, than those other bands. And if you're into classic metal, don't overlook these guys. This album is just waiting to be added to your classic metal collection.

Album #3 and still going strong. Ladies and Gentlemen..............2004-12-03
A lot of people thought W.A.S.P. was going soft with this album, but they were mistaken. One listen to 'Shoot from the Hip' was all you had to hear that Blackie was still on a rockin' rollin' rampage of sex, violence, and debauchery.
At the time this album was released, the PMRC was in it's full fury. Tipper Gore had targeted W.A.S.P. as one of the worst bands ever. Blackie had to bow a little and remove the periods in between the letters of "WASP" and this is the only album where this happens. With the next album "Live... in the Raw" the dots were back as drops of blood and have been there ever since. Also on this album Johny Rod from King Kobra came in to assume bass duty as Blackie went to the guitar for the first time on a W.A.S.P. album. Randy Piper, an original member, was now gone.
The opening is a bit corny, but you gotta realize that Blackie is the ringleader and afterall, someone needs to welcome you inside the madness, so it might as well be him.
The opening track is the title track and it's awesome. One of the best opening guitar riffs W.A.S.P. ever did. The song is full of energy, rampant, and exciting. The next tune, the cover of "I don't need no doctor" is simply awesome. '95 Nasty' should have been a hit, but it's still played live to this day.
Not everyone liked 'Mantronic', but I liked it. A bionic man with balls of steel is always a great idea for a tune. "King of Sodom and Gommarah", "Sweet Cheetah", and the closer "The Rock Rolls on" are also standouts.
This is a great album.

W.A.S.P. - 'Animal (F**k Like A Beast)' (Restless).......2006-04-29
This would likely be considered to be more like an EP,or even like a maxi-single.Think I may even still have my vinyl copy of this release.Features two(2)versions of the title cut,'Animal(F**k Like A Beast)',think I like the live version better.Plus you get "Hellion" off of W.A.S.P.'s 1984 self-titled debut, their own version of "Show No Mercy"(NOT cover of the Nazareth song, like I first assumed)and their Mountain cover of "Mississippi Queen".Although I've heard better versions, this one is decent.A should-have CD single for fans of '80's metal.
Classic W.A.S.P. !.......2000-04-29
At the time...this was the only way to get a copy of this song (Animal). So my rating is totally dependant on that.
Now W.A.S.P. apparently has re-released their whole library and tons of extra tracks are on different CD's including this one, leaving this CD a bit redundant.
Still, this is classic W.A.S.P., hard, raunchy, mean, and of course controversial. So controversial that their regular record company wouldn't put this song on their CD (hence..this release by a different one).
Animal is a great tune, one that brings back fond memories of the battle between Rock and the PMRC.
Hellion is my next favorite and while the recording isn't the best, it still rocks. Mountain's Mississippi Queen is covered on this and Blackie does it great justice!
Collected WASP.......1999-02-04
Originally produced as 2 EPs, Animal/Live Animal is a taste of W.A.S.P. when they were in their prime. F**K Like A Beast was supposed to go on Inside The Electric Circus, but got banned. Times change and people demand things though, so here they are. A must for a WASP Warrior, not so great if you're just plain heavy-metal because of the length of the album. 3 stars once again just cause it's Blackie.

W.A.S.P. fan from way back..........2002-12-29
I would break down the WASP sound into two categories: Hard-edged and Classic.
The three hard-edged CD's I would recommend to any metal fan are:
- The Crimson Idol (The best by far!)
- Headless Children
- K.F.D.
The four WASP classic-sound CD's I would recommend to any metal fan are:
- W.A.S.P.
- Still Not Black Enough
- The Last Command
- Dying For the World
Rare Bonus Tracks, Photos, & Articles Complete This Package.......2001-09-29
If you have all or some of these three albums on LP and are wondering if it is worth the money buying this set, I'll answer the question for you: YES! Each of these CDs have killer bonus tracks, many of which are as good as the album tracks. What's more, each CD booklet includes pics of the band, covers of their singles, and magazine covers plus interesting articles by Kerrang writer Dante Bonutto and reflections by none other than Blackie Lawless, himself! This package is a must have for W.A.S.P. fans as well as fans of the early 80s metal before it became tarnished by a wave of "poser" bands. The only thing that would make this package more complete would be the addition of Electric Circus. Its absence shows an aversion to that period, which is unfortunate. Although it did not represent their best work, Circus did have some excellent tracks to offer such as "Restless Gypsy" and "I'm Alive" and may have spawned more bonus tracks.
classic's together.......2000-07-23
the bonus songs make this a must buy for any w.a.s.p fan. who has a record player anymore to play the old singles? the albums sound better than ever. some of the songs are a little dated, as far as lyric's go , but 90% of it beats any of the so called metal that is out now. the only bad thing about this box set is the live "blind in texas" track. it has a fan singing.it's pretty lame. i get the point, but rather not listen to it. other than that one track, these cd's have not left my rotation in weeks. these cd's still get me going. rock on!

Who says there is a sophmore jinx?.......2007-05-29
Fresh off the heels of their self-titled debut, W.A.S.P. come right back with their sophmore album "The Last Command." Now there is some worry in the sports as well as entertainment business where people will suffer a sophmore jinx in which they won't have good follow-up material from their previous outings. This album proves that even if the jinx existed... W.A.S.p. are the exception to that rule!
1. Wild Child - A killer track to open the album with. It shows that the band has the same cutting edge as they had on their last album, but lyrically and instrumentaly they have grown. Evident right away is the emotion put forth in the track. Awesome song to get us started. 5/5
2. Ball Crusher - This is a song that is just very fun and energetic. Showing that they continuie to have a fun side and just enjoy themselves. May take awhile to get into, but well worth the patience. 4/5
3. Firstful of Diamonds - Awesome song with awesome guitar work! Vocals match beautifully and the whole song just seems to gel. Somehow it seems to fit on the album perfectly as well, not quite shock-rock and shows how the band has grown, but also fun and upbeat. 4/5
4. Jack Action - Another track that is just pure fun and energy. Although I like the song, I do feel that this was perhaps left over material from their debut. Goes hand in hand with their song "School Daze" as it does rock, but really goes nowhere. 3.5/5
5. Widowmaker - One of the bnest songs on the album in my opinion! Shows elements of a darker side of the band which come into play later in their careers. Remains catchy while it takes that dark turn. This shows just how well the song writing had developed between this album and the debut. 5/5
6. Blind In Texas - Perhaps the best known song off the album. A shout-out anthem to the lonestar state! Awesome track with awesome work from all of the guys. One can tell however, that thjis song was made to be played on the radio as the lyrics don't run to deep and the song is just a fun rocking tune! 4.5/5
7. Cries In The Night - This song is another that may take the listener some time to get into, as it did for me. A song that shows elements of dark and dreary emotion but is stil fun in a way. One of the under-rated gems on the album. 4/5
8. The Last Command - The title track of the album. A pure awesome song that is W.A.S.P. at their best! Everything just seemed to flow together and nothing seemed forced here. A pure gem, and I think another under-rated song on the album. 5/5
9. Running Wild In The Streets - Although I like this song, I feel the placement of it on the album is very poor. In my opinion, this song should have gone earlier in the album as it lacks substance, but is catchy. Perhaps putting it right before "Blind In Texas" or "Ball Crusher" would have worked better. Like I said, it is a good song but I feel it gets lost in the shuffle being where it's placed. 3.5/5
10. Sex Drive - This song in some ways seems to not fit with the rest of the album, but at the same time works perfectly. A fun and energetic song that is an awesome way to end an album. In essence it brings the listener right back to the beginning with "Wild Child." Great song. 3.5/5
I won't cover the bonus tracks as most of them are just live renditions of songs they already have done. However, two songs "Mississippi Queen" which is a very well-done cover song, and "Savage" which is just pure W.A.S.P. show that the band was really entering their top-form right around this time.
Overall, an awesome album and really a W.A.S.P. classic that all fans should own!
The Last Command.......2004-06-21
In 1985 W.A.S.P. released their second album "The Last Command" which was a minor hit with a couple of tracks that had popular videos on mtv, those being Wild Child and Blind in Texas.Considering the 1980's was when this kind of music ruled the charts,it disappoints that this group was not more popular than they where. While they aren't those most talented band in the world songs like Ballcrusher, Fistful of Diamonds, Widowmaker,Cries in the Night, Wild Child, and Blind in Texas, are much better than anything from the 80's metal bands that ruled the radio. WASP is a killer band, who put out many great albums, do yourself a favor and by this CD you will not be disappointed. 1990's issues of this album have bonus cuts. The original Capitol records release only contained 10 songs.
S-s-s-SAVAGE!!!.......2003-11-24
The second WASP album, and another incredibly solid effort. If you are a hard rock fan, you must not miss this one. Once again the weakest track is a cover (Mississippi Queen)...but the rest are ALL great.
Wild Child was the song that got me into WASP...and the more I listened the more I was amazed at Blackie's inability to write a bad tune. He writes memorable chorus after chorus and his three part vocal attack is wicked. They say less is more and that is definitely the case when it comes to the guitar side of WASP songs...chords crashing as a backdrop to Blackie's fantastic vocals is perfect...yet the solos always rip.
I don't think I could ever say a bad thing about this (in fact the first 3 WASP albums). Even the cover is awesome!
Yes the lyrics can be cheesy but they were, for the most part, never intended to be profound (at least not in the early days).
And I'd have to disagree with one of the reviews below that says 'Savage' is not worth listening to. It is one of my favorite WASP tunes...the chorus is bloody great...and the verses are as always, good for a laugh ("Tazmanian devil...I'll eat you alive...") Mwahahaha.
The inclusion of 5 songs from the Live at The Lyceum set was a nice touch and makes this album even more monstrous than it already was. Those of you who have seen videos of the songs know how awesome that show was...
GET THIS TODAY.
A LITTLE LESS IS MORE WITH MORE FINESE!.......2001-10-02
Many artists can fail to follow up with equal abandon with release number two especially when its predecessor was a barn stormer. W.A.S.P certainly delivered everything and more with 'The Last Command'. The delivery of 'more' in this case being a more refined style of writing. The songs demonstrate a little if not too much maturity. Ensuring that the band was seen to be growing and could improve seemed paramount in Blackie's mind as collectively they stretched their wings. This release prooves without a doubt that this band was a lot more than fake blood and stage props. 'Wild Child' lauches right out to meet you being both subtle and hauntingly atmospheric. Hands down the BEST song this band has produced a sonic treat that has inspired lyrics and enough musical sounds swooping in from all sides of the room to have you ducking your head in panic. Just incase you felt betrayed by the change of direction the band had opened this monster with 'Ball Crusher' arrives to let you know that no matter how deep things may get W.A.S.P will always be animals at heart and that gut wrenching emotion would remain essential. And that really is why this disc is so good and enjoyable to listen to. Basically 'The Last Command' has an ample balance of light and shade throughout. 'Widow Maker' sister of 'Wild Child' can sit along side 'Fistful Of Diamonds' son of 'Jack Action' without issue or by feeling disjointed. Two rally to arms songs being the title track and 'Running Wild In The Streets' offer a insight to the creative ideas the band would explore in later years and add value to the strength of side two. 'Blind In Texas' certainly is the most famous song on offer on that side and many W.A.S.P fans may disagree with me, but I think it is a weak link here but that is only my opinion. Now on the other hand 'Cries In The Night' a heart felt ballad is a classic moment to me and maybe that sums things up nicely. A little bit of everything for everyone and not too much of the same. Buy as an essential item and enjoy at peak volume ranges!
GOOD, BUT NOT THEIR BEST.......2001-05-03
I like this record. It certainly has it's place in history and is a classic among the party rock released in the mid 80's. I think that the songwriting is kind of simple (not that this makes for a bad song!) and the lyrics are a bit too cheesy to take at times. The energy is right there, and songs like Wild Child, WidowMaker, Blind in Texas and others will live for a long time as people's personal favorites. The live stuff at the end isn't all that great, but thanks for the cool addition. Any WASP is cool WASP and we are happy for any extras we can get. This is a very cool album, but it sounds a bit dated, where Headless, Crimson, and Still Not Black Enough still sound fresher than anything put out today. It is a must have, I just like other records better.

Enter the circus at own risk!.......2007-07-10
I'll admit I waited to review this album last, because I hadn't listened to it since the day I bought it; nearly three years ago. This was one album by W.A.S.P. that I was originally turned off by, due to the rather shoddy production. Recently, I put the album back in, and after two straight days of listening to it, I find myself appreciating it much more!
1. The Big Welcome - I liked this opening "skit." It was dark, and very much like something the band would do at the time. Fits the album perfectly! 4/5
2. Inside The Electric Circus - Very heavy stuff here! Classic 80's hair metal W.A.S.P. These guys just seem to have a blast rocking out. A do detect a hint of "The Last Command" in this song as well. Pretty cool. 4.5/5
3. I Don't Need No Doctor - This was one song that took me awhile to enjoy. Being a cover, I thought the band could have done a better job. Pretty heavy here, and a very catchy chorus. 3.5/5
4. 95-N.A.S.T.Y. - Perhaps the hit single from the album that almost everyone has heard. Very cool song. Again, relates directly to that 80's hair metal style that we all love! To me, the beginning sounded something like AC/DC would do in one of their songs! 4.5/5
5. Restless Gypsy - I think this is the under-rated gem of the album! It has an awesome beginning, sounding something similar to a Van halen tune. Kicks right into Blackie and his effortless vocals! Awesome track! 5/5
6. Shoot From The Hip - This song is another about pure rock n' roll! A fun song that just rocks in pure W.A.S.P. fashion! I didn't care for this song at first, but it will grow on you. 4/5
7. I'm Alive - Along with "Restless Gypsy" this song is another under-rated gem from this album. A heavy feel to it, it makes you want to rock out! One of those anthems that the band puts on each album to get the fans pumped! Again, a lot of "Last Command" feel to it as well. 5/5
8. Easy Living - Keeping with the heavy theme, the band again rocks out to another cover song. To me, it was a bit better than IDNND but the taste is within everyone's own personality. 4/5
9. Sweet Cheetah - Again, the band has that raw 80's energy about them. Lyrics are pretty cheesy, but the song has the W.A.S.P. feel and that's all that matters. 4/5
10. Mantronic - I like this song a lot. It has a lot of elements that show up in later works by the band. Again, the lyrics may not be the deepest, but the overall rock feel to it is amazing. The band plays strong and cohesively on this track as well! 4.5/5
11. King Of Sodom And Gomorrah - I have no idea what the title is about, but the song is pretty cool. This song has that "Animal" feel to it. the band just seems to have a lot of fun here and it makes for a killer song! 4.5/5
12 The Rock Rolls On - This is a pretty cool way to end the album on a technical standpoint. Classic W.A.S.P. Can you say "Blind In Texas?" Listen to that and you have this song! 4/5
13. Flesh And Fire (Bonus Track) - This song is awesome and I'm glad it made it as a bonus track on the album. Classic feel about heavy partying and rock n' roll! 4/5
14. D.B. Blues (Bonus Track) - This song is cool because its something you may not be used to hearing from W.A.S.P. has a bluesy tone to it, and the message is funny! 4/5
Overall, this album is a pretty good gem that many may under-rate. I almost made that mistake and wrote this one off. Don't! It is well worth it for any fan of W.A.S.P. and/or 80's metal!
W.A.S.P. - 'Inside The Electric Circus' (Navarro).......2006-09-04
Never could understand as to why some fans as well as critics never liked this third record release(1986)from W.A.S.P. Personally,I've always dug it AS much as I did their self-titled debut, that has become HARD to beat.Classic '80's metal here for the taking.Tracks that I've always been partial to are "95-Nasty",the head-riveting "Shoot From The Hip","Sweet Cheetah" as well as their two extremely well done covers,Humbie Pie's "I Don't Need No Doctor" and Uriah Heep's "Easy Living".Long live Blackie Lawless and crew!Essential.
The third and as solid as their first two.......2006-07-03
Out of all the Wasp albums I gave the first four releases each five stars- Headless Children got four and the rest are all dissapointing.
This is the Wasp album that most frequently is in my cd player- and every song is great. No filler- songs like Mantronic, Sweet Cheatah, and Restless Gypsy are what metal is about. No politics, whining, or sappy love ballads, just music that brings back the good times- when music was about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Thanks Blackie.
Get the re-issue as it has the classic "Douchebag Blues"
one of the best!!!.......2005-08-02
I have enjoy it a lot!!!! Besides, Headless Children, Crimson Idol their peak!!!
One of the best albums W.A.S.P. has released!.......2005-04-11
Inside the Electric Circus was W.A.S.P.'s third album in as many years. While there are many people who find Inside the Electric Circus to be a mixed bag, I personally find it to be one of WASP's finest albums. Songs like Inside the Electric Circus, 95 Nasty, Shoot from the Hip, I'm Alive and a couple of cover tunes I Don't Need No Doctor and Easy Livin' prove that this is one of WASP's best albums. Both 1984's WASP and 1985's The Last Command were good, but with Inside the Electric Circus, Blackie and the boys wrote a stronger batch of songs. Side 1 is flawless, and the second side is almost as strong. WASP are one of those great underated bands.
