Everything Done Perfect,By The Book...but.......2007-02-01

Ac/Dc had recently released 'Blow Up Your Video' which had garnered a bit of a buzz especially from 2 great videos but the sales were still not up to what they were in the early 80s so they did what on paper seemed to be a very smart idea,they hired THE best rock producer in the business,Bruce Fairbairn who had rescued Bon Jovi,Aerosmith,and others with smash hits...heck,I would have done the exact same thing in their shoes,and did it work? Well,yes and no.The razor's edge did sell quite a bit more then the past few releases,especially powered by the lead off single 'Thunderstruck'
and the songwriting did improve tremendously on this release while still not selling out the blues based rock style that got them to the party in the first place..songs like 'Moneytalks''Are You Ready', 'Let's Make It' 'Got You By The Balls' and my personal fave 'Mistress For Christmas' show that they have all the power and fire that they did way back for their ultimate release 'Back In Black' yes,those songs are that good,the lyrics are still as sexually charged as ever,Angus can still play lead right up there with the best of the best and nobody alive can scream like Brian Johnson...but..something just doesn't feel right with this release...if you listen to the songs by themselves one at a time,they are just about perfect,but when you listen to the CD from start to finish it feels so bare bones,so for a lack of better word 'empty' I'm sure this was intentionally done,the band did not want people to say they had gotten too polished,but it makes the CD kind of hard to listen to from start to finish,there isn't a lot of warmth...maybe that's just me...but especially towards the end of the CD I always find myself looking at the CD case to see how much longer I have to go 'till it's over..it's just too similar,to o dry sounding the whole way through....I think basically aside from the production being dry the last two songs really bring it down (a problem that Ac/Dc had on almost every release)
The CD opens with 'Thunderstruck' a modern day classic,couldn't ask for a better way to open the album...from there 'Fire Your Guns' almost shouting to the world that they are back as strong as ever...'Moneytalks' brilliant lyrics,and extremely catchy music make this one very strong..the title cut 'The Razors Edge' full of dark atmosphere,reminds me in a lot of ways of the feel of 'Nightstalker' from Highway To Hell..but it seems to be lacking the same warmth ..from there 'Mistress For Christmas' almost every guy in the world would love the lyrics to this one..it's one of my favorite holiday tunes and is my personal favorite from this one...'Rock Your Heart Out' is another great catchy song...'Are You Ready' is just one word..power..awesome tune,one of their best ever,would be perfect to open up concerts with..from there 'Got You By The Balls' again the lyrics are perfect...I think they took more time with lyrics on this release then any album they ever did,and it shows,catchy music too...'Shot Of Love' catchy but not one of my favorites...'Let's Make It' perfect song for girls to dance to,so that gets thumbs up from me...'Goodbye & Good Riddance To Bad Luck' and 'If You Dare' I think they just threw those two songs to fill out the CD,but if they left 'em off (or maybe threw 'em onto a box set as unreleased tunes) it would have been better,it really drags the whole CD down at the end...all this being said,I originally was going to give this a 3 star rating but I've changed my mind and give it a 4 star rating...there are many many great songs,some of the best in their career,I just don't care for the overall tone,I wish they would re-release this one with a warmer feel...it feels very sterile..but overall a great CD and truly a comeback!

The Upside - perhaps the best lyric work they've ever done...the style of great blues tinged rock continues,but with a lot more attention to songwriting.They have done a great job of putting together some classic tunes.

The Downside - the last two songs,aside from that it's perfect aside from feeling a little bare.

The Bottom Line - This should definitely be in your collection. You are not likely to find a collection of songs this good on almost any band's CD.Some great hits are here,some incredibly catchy songs with great lyrics and my favorite holiday song are all here...if you are new to the band I'd start with Highway To Hell,Back In Black,and Dirty Deeds,but then you should definitely check this out..and all hard core fans of Ac/Dc should definitely have this...this is some of the best work...go out and buy this the donutman says so!!!

What Could Be Better?.......2006-11-09

The Razor's Edge is AC/DC's greatest album. I Don't care if it was a comeback or not, it's that good. Lets review the songs.
Thunderstruck - One of the best songs from AC/DC. Angus' guitar skills are amazing, and I love the football-hooligan chants from Malcom and Cliff of "THUN-DER!"
Fire Your Guns - A Great fast paced song that has an awesome riff. Oh, it has nothing to do with artillery, if you didn't already know that.
Moneytalks - The band's greatest song, and my favorite of all time. Its riff reminds me of "Who Made Who." This song is what puts this album together. I can't even describe how good this song is. Just listen to it.
The Razor's Edge - While it is one of AC/DC's darkest songs, it is still awesome. I loved it. It's "eerieness" is similar to "Hells Bells."
Mistress For Christmas - Hilarious. Just listening to the words makes the song good, but the bands simple cords in this song also make it OK.
Rock Your Heart Out - Corny, but still has a good beat and riff that makes it worth listening to when you're doing chores around the house.
Are You Ready - Good song, but its still hard to believe that it was a single and not Fire Your Guns. If you ask me, its a little overrated.
Got You by the Balls - Better title than song. But it still isn't awful. It has an ok beat and riffs, but its just ok from a band that is this good.
Shot of Love - Incredibly slow beginning, and it starts to come around half way through the song, but its too little, too late.
Lets Make It - Underrated. Much better than Rock Your Heart Out. People will probobly disagree with me, but it is actually a pretty good song.
Goodbye and Good Ridance to Bad Luck - The worst song on the album. Very boring and repetitive.
If You Dare - Almost as bad as the above. It was just a bad way to finish the album, but the previous songs in the album makes the album waorthy of 5 stars.
My advice - New AC/DC fan or not, buy this album, especially if you love Brian Johnsons vocals. This album is just as good if not better than "Back in Black," so its 1 or two on their top albums list. BUY IT!

another great by AC/DC.......2006-08-05

The Razor's Edge is the first AC/DC album I ever got and it turned me on to them. This is their comeback and it sounds great.

The album opens great with the masterpiece known as Thunderstruck. A great riff, great lyrics, great vocals...what more could you need in a song. Fire Your Guns is a great fast-paced song. The next great is the title track. One of the darker songs they've done, it has a great riff, great vocals, and a great drum solo by Chris Slade. Mistress for Christmas' riff is simple but it works. Rock Your Heart Out is one of my favorites from its great riff to its great bassline. Then comes the self-explanatory classic Are You Ready and its great beginning and great lyrics. Then comes Shot of Love. It starts out bad, but a song full of guitar syncopation follows making this track great. Let's Make It is poppy, but it has great drums and good enough lyrics. Then comes Goodbye and Good Riddance to Bad Luck. With one of my favorite riffs on the album as well as my favorite lyrics(especially when Brian says "disposable blues"). The last great song on here is If You Dare. I think it should have been a classic. It has a great chorus and a great riff.

Now as always, time for the other songs. Here's another thing to make people mad after my Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap review. Moneytalks isn't all that great. It's decent, with a good chorus, but it's too poppy to be a classic. Sorry but it is. Got You by the Balls isn't any better.

Overall, AC/DC had made a great rock album here, something they wouldn't be able to do on their next albums.

A great and memorable effort by AC/DC in the '90s........2006-08-04

The Razor's Edge is another great rock album with many more hits than albums before it.

7.Are You Ready- A great solid fist-pumper with outstanding guitar and catchy chorus. 9/10
8.Got You By The Balls- One of the many songs on this album that is boring and repetitive. 6/10
9.Shot Of Love- An infectious beat can't stop this song from getting boring. 7/10
10.Let's Make It- Kind of awkward guitar, but okay nonetheless. 7/10
11.Goodbye And Good Riddance To Bad Luck- Kind of catchy beat and chorus, but gets old quickly. 7/10
12.If You Dare- The guitar is very catchy, but another boring, repetitive song. 6/10

Overall, The Razor's Edge has its ups and downs, but it's worth listening to for just the first four songs.

Well, at least the first four songs are good..........2006-07-24

This is a HUGE improvement over 80's albums such as Flick of the Switch, Blow Up Your Video and For Those About to Rock. It still feels kind of uninspired, but at least it contains three of my AC/DC favorites: Thunderstruck, Moneytalks and the title track, plus Fire Your Guns. But it dies out after this, and AC/DC churns out pointless song after pointless song. It's an improvement, though.

REALLY BAD MOVIE :(.......2007-06-01

The trailer tricks you into thinking its a up-lifting romance but its not. The main character (Eric) is really hot but very self-centered. I can understand his distress but thats no excuse to ignore others feelings. And the ending seemed tacked on as a after thought. Not worth buying. :P

I agree with a previous reviewer who wondered what the point of this film is. Aside from watching an extremely handsome kid turn himself into a Boy George wannabe, and several cliche scenes that have been repeated either in the exact same way or much better in 1000 other films, there's nothing left. Worth a rental in my view, not a purchase. Or at least Strand needs to seriously rethink their pricing for this film.

With that said, the acting is excellent all around, especially Chris Stafford who made the most out of a truly mundane script.

Didn't Get It.......2007-01-14

What was the point of the movie? What was it trying to say? If it was trying to say coming out is difficult and self-denial is harmful, then it did a good job. Other than that, there's nothing worthy here. As a reviewer has said, no one but the protagonist's mom is likeable. So true...

A gay slice of the 80's!.......2006-12-06

Filmed on a modest budget, "Edge" seems more honest & affecting in its storytelling than most bigger-budgeted offerings. And the fashions, hairstyles, and music (scored by none other than 80's pop icon Tom Bailey of "the Thompson Twins") are a true blast from the past. This film resonated with me strongly, for on that same year, I was going thru what Eric (played with sweet sincerity by Chris Stafford) was experiencing: confused attractions towards both genders, the "first time" with another guy, gay culture shock, and finally, acceptance for who I was (although I never went as far as Eric did with the "androgynous" look!). The acting & situations seem more firmly rooted in "real" time, as if you're right there witnessing what Eric's going thru. The emotions seem more raw here, unlike other films where the actors seem to be grabbing for that paycheck.
This film won raves at the Sundance festival some years back, and I can see why. "Edge" is a combination of things: a loving "time capsule" for the Reagan era, and an affecting look at finding one's identity during a most turbulent time, the teen years.

Neat, enjoyable coming-of-age drama.......2006-09-06

Edge of Seventeen is a slightly quirky drama that combines a riveting coming-out story with an homage to the eighties teen movie. It's the sweet tale of an 18-year-old coming to terms with being gay, having a first date, falling in love, getting jilted - the whole lot. It's all affectionately and amusingly done, and is courageous enough to eschew a more conventional "happy ending".

One of the finest unheard of scores in history.......2001-12-29

For fans of John Barry, James Horner and other contemporary film music wizards, this classic soundtrack is absolutely not to be missed. While only the first 11 tracks are worthwhile (the remaining ones are not really from the score and really just a bunch of chimes), you will be amazed at the now passed Jack Nitzche's ability to capture this sad, sweeping epic. Nitzche also wrote the music for One Flew Over the Cockoo's Nest and Starman, but this is his best. Note the innocence of the beginning of track 4 and how it ends in the chaos of war. This is a great score and is one of the finest ever recorded.

It's a bad CD! It isn't Alfred Newman!...The choir is the worst choir I ever hear! The singers have horrible voices....
If you want hear the true Newman , buy the available originals in SAE, Rhino and Tsunamy labels

Finally!.......2002-04-17

I cant tell you how pleased I am that this collection is coming out! I have been trying for several years to replace my vinyl copy of just "The Diary of Anne Frank" with no success. I found the original in a cut out bin at a camera store when the own stopped carrying records back in the 60's. It has a flaw on the first band of the "b" side, but it is still quite valuable(yes I still have it, and have no intention of parting with it. Thank you for releasing even this portion of a great film score. Any chance that the full score will be reissued on CD??

A very complete summary of Alfred Newman's film music.......2001-11-23

This is a very good two-CD edition of the best of Alfred Newman's film music. Moreover, it includes several suites not available before, such as "The Razor's Edge", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "How the West was won", "The Diary of Anne Frank", plus the magnificent new Cantata "Man of Galilee", adapted from music of "The Robe" and "The Greatest story ever told". It includes also the overture of "The Mark of Zorro", that well deserved to be included in a Newman-Anthology (though it had been previosly relesed by the same label in a separate CD). Regarding other tracks, for instance "Cathy's Theme" from "Wuthering Heights" or "Conquest" from "Captain from Castile", in my opinion the tempos are very slow, though the versions are also good. In the particular case of "Conquest" I prefer other recordings, with more strength, such as Newman's symphonic suite, Korngold-Gerhard's recording, and Naxos'recording by Richard Hyman in "Majestic Marches", which includes not only the famous march but also the prelude of "Captain from Castile".
The only single contrary comment deals with the information booklet. I detected some "inventions" in the text. For instance the author speaks of Mexico as being part of South America, while most of Mexico (especially today's Mexico City) is in North America (only the Yucatan peninsula is in Central America), and says the Spanish conquerors cross the "pampas", while the "pampas" are not in Mexico, but thousands of kilometers to the South. They are huge and completely plain land extensions, without mountains, located in the South Cone of South America, especially in Patagonia. Obviously this mistake is not important, but it is convenient to avoid geographic confusions.

Song Change on My CD.......2006-09-16

There's a song change on my copy of "On the Edge." Song #10 is a different Pretenders song, it's "I'll Stand by You" instead of "Don't Get Me Wrong."

I want to get this CD! If I ever see it at a used CD store, I'm going to get it! I was introduced to alternative music by The Cure (They're not on here). This is probably the best CD to introduce you into alternative music!

Two or three great songs that you don't hear too much (Pixies, Rembrandts), but some of the other selections have already been beat to death by radio.

The one disc compilation is outstanding. As an earlier review stated, the 2 CD set is more of the same great music.
If you are lucky enough to find the two disc version, hang on to it. It's beyond rare. Both are out of print.

Holland is the greatest living jazz bassist: a superb musician and all around cool dude whose name has been synonymous with the highest quality jazz for some 25 years now. What other bass player (or any instrumentalist for that matter) can release two albums consisting entirely of unaccompanied playing, that are on such a level of quality, they are rated even higher by some fans than his excellent band records?

1987's "Razor's Edge" is yet another one of those excellent band records, and the high level it operates on could only have been maintained under Holland's confident leadership. "Razor's Edge" features 3 Holland originals, two by Steve Coleman, two by Doug Hammond and one by Kenny Wheeler. Don't expect some neo-traditionalist rehash, you won't find it here. This is a progressive jazz record of rare excellence and depth, the exceptional qualities of which are easily recognizable and enduring but not instantly accessible without some effort on the part of the listener. There are no mediocre tunes, all the compositions are top-notch and always stay fully progressive while running the gamut of emotions: from high-energy uptempo mayhem to mid-tempo cool to exquisite modern jazz balladry. The record as a whole is a more consistent effort than 1984's excellent "Seeds of Time." The more energetic tunes hit you like a cold slap on the face but reveal more and more warmth on each repeated listen as you become comfortable with their aura. The band sound is loud and horn heavy, just wild enough to scare off squeamish yuppie jazz fans but never too wild and arrogant for its own good. There's plenty of Mingus-like ensemble playing and loud dissonance to blast people out of cornbread Pat-Metheny-land and give them a nice little artistic headache full of healthy neurotic complexity which is relieved by the majestically smooth flugelhorn melodies of Wheeler and the magnificently cool trombone melodies of Robin Eubanks. Needless to add, some of alto saxophonist Steve Coleman's most amazing playing is also on this record: high-concept, supertoned, non-cliche, virtuoso sax lines to make your head spin. And, of course, the fire that lights the spark is drummer extraordinaire Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Smith is on a subtle burn throughout in the background, managing to squeeze in incredible drum fills at the most unexpected moments, and becomes truly volcanic and unchained on the display piece "Figit Time," where he turns up the heat and takes center stage.

I've found this album getting some really mixed reviews, which is quite mind-blowing. Unless you're a total Bon Scott worshipper who refuses to give Brian Johnson his due, which of course is a big mistake, no hard rock lover should be without this album.

Originally released in September of 1990, "The Razors Edge" smokes and kicks major ass all over the place--you've got to take your hat off to the late Bruce Fairbairn for his production on this one.

Much has been made that Brian Johnson's voice sounds totally shot on here. Admittedly, by this time, he no longer had the kind of gloriously piercing edge that you can hear in full force on 1981's "For Those About To Rock..." and 1983's "Flick of the Switch". On the other hand, he's still singing his balls off on here in his usual high-pitched register, and he adds greatly to the album's excitement level. There's a certain on-the-edge intensity to his vocals here that really gets under your skin.

The big hit "Thunderstruck", with its classic single-string lead guitar line from Angus Young, gets the album off to a great anthemic start. "Fire Your Guns" is one of those thrilling fast-paced AC/DC gems that really gets the blood flowing. "Money Talks" has something of a barroom rock quality, but don't worry, it's hardly Hootie & the Blowfish, and it's got an incredibly catchy chorus. The arrestingly menacing title track is chillingly powerful. For proof positive that Angus and Malcolm Young are kings of hard rock riffery, you needn't look any further than the stomping "Got You By The Balls"--the main riff is uncanny: deceptively simple and absolutely bone-crunching. The album closes in intensely menacing fashion with the ingeniously crafted stomper "If You Dare". There's a load more excitement to be found as well with the driving "Rock Your Heart Out"; the chugging "Shot Of Love"; and a pair of good-timey party rockers: "Are You Ready" and "Let's Make It". Showing what a roll the boys are on, even the tracks that seem filler-ish work--the 'sleigh bells'-fortified "Mistress For Christmas" is amusingly dumb and irresistibly fun; and "Goodbye And Good Riddance To Bad Luck", with its utterly tossed off main riff, is also solidly amusing and enjoyable.

Metaphorically speaking, the boys are simply on fire here, and the album is thoroughly a blast. If you're looking to, ahem, "Rock Your Heart Out", you can't go wrong with this essential hard rock masterpiece.

A good album, but not their best.......2004-09-20

I am by nature a contrarian, which I regard as one of my better traits. However, I wish I weren't sometimes, and this is one of them: AC/DC is a band of legendary status, and I don't want anyone out there to think I'm busting their chops.

That said, I cannot agree with all the reviewers who rated this with 5 stars, and saw this album as the antithesis of their mid-'80s slump. I liked their trio of excellent albums from that period (in order, "Flick of the Switch," "Blow Up Your Video" and "Fly on the Wall"). I really think that "The Razor's Edge" belongs with "Fly on the Wall," truthfully: There are some really excellent songs on this album, but there's the matter of a wee bit too much filler.

First, let us deal with what makes this album work: The title track is total killer and starts off with a nice "Bach rock" solo on the part of Angus. "Thunderstruck" and "Moneytalks" are two superior tunes that indeed announce to the world that AC/DC has not rolled over and played dead, that they doeth still the world rule. "Moneytalks" hearkens back to the Bon Scott era kind of songs you heard on "High Voltage," "Let There Be Rock" and "Highway to Hell." Really clever ditty, that.

I am also glad to hear Brian Johnson's voice in the forefront, whereas with "Blow Up Your Video" and "Fly On the Wall," he sounded as though he was miked from across the room. His voice is a bit more scratchy here than on previous outings, but I like that bluesy, gravelly quality.

"Shot of Love" is my favorite on this album. It has a cool backbeat and Brian Johnson spits out the lyrics cantankerously. "Are You Ready" is a great party and drinking song and makes for an excellent stadium-rousing anthem.

"Mistress for Christmas" is a nice novelty tune, but if the song's subject were less, shall we say, specialized, it would just be another filler track.

However, I am not convinced that this album really does set AC/DC apart from their mid-to-late '80s stuff: I challenge anyone to show that "Fire Your Guns," "Rock Your Heart Out," "Got You by the Balls," "Let's Make It," "Goodbye and Good Riddance to Bad Luck" and "If You Dare" are anything save a recycling of their '80s filler songs. That's SIX songs that are arguably filler, and if you compare them to the non-hits on "Back In Black" such as "Have a Drink on Me" and "Shake A Leg," or "For Those About to Rock....."'s "Inject the Venom" and "C.O.D.", they are not nearly as unique or solid.

That, and Chris Slade's by-the-book drumming do not for an unassailable classic make. Their true comeback album, headlined by the return of original drummer Phil Rudd, would not happen for another five years, until 1995's "Ballbreaker."

Not Their Greatest Effort.......2004-05-14

AC/DC experienced something of a slump in the late-80's, none of their albums fairing particularly well. In 1990, they made a comeback with this album. While many hailed it as their greatest work since Back In Black, I personally think there is a lot of filler. The first few songs are dynamic: Moneytalks, Thunderstruck, The Razor's Edge, and Mistress For Christmas. Bur after that, the songs almost immediatly go downhill. Most of the second half is just filler. I can't say I listen to the second half a lot, because it is not really worth it. This would have gotten two stars, but the first half saves it from that fate.

AC/DC Has the Edge.......2002-09-02

This is a great AC/DC album. It gives you energy when you listen to it. It opens on all cylinders with "Thunderstruck" and continues to rock with "Fire Your Guns" and a big MTV hit "Moneytalks." It sure does. Side One is more potent and rocking than Side Two, but it is still a strong production overall. AC/DC helped to define a generation of rock-n-roll. This is Australia's music with an edge. When AC/DC is in the house, it is always a rocking good time.

AC/DC ROCK MAN. There Australia's own boys rocken and rollin. This by far one of there best ablems with guitars screching and drums thumping. The best songs on the ablem are ROCK YOUR HEART OUT and ARE YOU READY FOR A GOOG TIME. AC/DC keep on Rocking Australia's own boys Yaeh Woo! AC/DC ROCK!!!!
