Sara Hickman's spring-loaded Toddler plays like a 2-year-old's trip to the zoo. What's around the bend is anybody's guess, but because each creature is as kooky or adorable or exotic as the one that came before it, you can hardly wait to get there. Think of it as a 31-track grab-bag: "I Got You Babe," its lyrics modified from "I got you to wear my ring" to "I got you to push me on the swing," butts up against "Storytime with Tish Hinojosa," a spoken-word saga of feline demise and rat liberation; the 1930s safety song "Remember Your Name & Address" swings out soberly on the heels of "Mr. Kawasaki (the Wok Song)," a gastronomic gross-out detailing a stir-fry gone wrong; and a hip-hop take on "This Little Light of Mine" thumps along in the hands of guest vocalist MC Overlord before this CD shoves off to Hawaii for "Pupu Hinuhinu." Interspersed are more spoken-word tracks (someone called Mr. Peppermint takes a turn, as do Sara and other friends), old standbys like "Freres Jacques" and "Duke of York," and, with "Waar Is Mijn Dulfje (Where is My Baby Bird)" and the Hebrew "Hiney Rakavet," there are some stabs at toddler world music. Where most CDs that string together snatches of this and that collapse into catchalls--nothing special--Toddler stands steady on its feet, buoyed by Hickman's wit, spunk, and way with a song. Her's is a voice as warm and inviting as a best-loved blanket, calling to mind Karen Carpenter in calmer moments, and what she chooses to wrap it around will leave moms, dads, and tots hoping she takes this boringly titled series, which started with Newborn, all the way past Tween and College Kid to Old Geezer. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars One of the best or little ones!!.......2007-07-30

I got this when my kids were 2 and 5. They both LOVE it. The songs and the stories. This is really wonderful. I like it, too! They are original and have kid appeal right away.

5 out of 5 stars something to sing about.......2007-07-15

OUR CHILD LOVES IT WHEN HER FATHER AND I SING SONGS TO HER. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT WE COULD ONLY THINK OF A FEW SONGS FROM OUR CHILDHOOD AND EVEN THEN THE VERSES WERE A LITTLE HAZY. THIS CD IS WONDERFUL BECAUSE IT HAS SOME OF THE CLASSICS I REMEMBER AND A LOT OF ONES I'D NEVER HEARD BEFORE. THE LYRICS ARE EASY AND THE SONGS THEMSELVES AREN'T THAT LONG. SO, IN ONE CAR RIDE (AND A FEW RETAKES LATER) YOU TOO CAN BE AN OLD PRO.
LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I love the variety.......2007-07-07

I bought Sara Hickman's toddler album after listening to her Newborn album. I'm an even bigger fan of the Toddler album. The songs are all upbeat, but from different musical genres. I walk around all day singing the songs we hear on the way in to work.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD........2007-01-09

This is a sweet and well balanced CD. My husband and I fell in love with it right away, and my daughter started to like it after it's played a few times. She can now sing a few songs from it. It's so funny to hear her sing the weenie man. :) Now it's one of our favorite CDs.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Kid CD.......2006-11-02

The warning i'm going to give is also the best reason to buy it! If you play this in your car for your 3 year old, you will never hear any other music besides this CD EVER again! Keep them happy! Buy it now! of course, there are one or two throw away tracks, but after the 20-something song, no one notices!

4 out of 5 stars Better than you think.......2007-05-05

I grew up with the original Bad Company, who were, imho, vastly overrated. With the exception of their first album, which was stocked with songs Mick Ralphs had been writing in the waning days of his membership in Mott The Hoople, their album catalog is very uneven, and consists of much filler. When the band came back in the 80's, with new vocalist Brian Howe, they managed two great arena rock albums - Dangerous Age and Holy Water - that were chokka-block full of great tunes. When the Mk3 version started up, I lost interest totally. This was a mistake on my part - because Robert Hart is a "ringer" for Paul Rodgers - and does a great job on the normally dreaded remakes of early Bad Co tunes. And the new songs aren't bad either. I picked this up used on the cheap (2 bucks), and was pleasantly surprised and pleased. Put your pre-conceived notions about Bad Co w/o Mr. Rodgers aside, and enjoy some decent remakes, and "filler" just as good as anything else the original Bad Co did back in the day. You won't be sorry you spent 2 bucks. And how often is it you get a whole album that is pretty good for 2 bucks? :)

3 out of 5 stars closing a cycle..........2007-04-25

This is the final release by Bad Company Mk3, done before the reunion of the original lineup in 1997, and 1 year after their only other release, Company of Strangers. That record marked the debut of singer Robert Hart, as well as a return to the original bluesy/country rock roots of the band, forsaking the more "commercial" sound of their late 80's and early 90's output with singer Brian Howe at the helm.

I was born in '78, so I never heard the original incarnation of the band. My first introduction to Bad Company came through their 80's music, which I fell in love with, not even knowing that they've had a previous lineup and a totally different musical style! And while this is not my favorite style (meaning their original one), the return to their roots was masterfully done and the results were very good on "Company of Strangers".

This release, however, shows a different side, with mostly acoustic sounding material, where 50% of the songs are new versions of old classics and the other half are brand new songs, probably leftovers. As far as I'm concerned, there are a couple of statements any self respecting artist should really think through before actually making them, and these are (1 being the most delicate): 5)a live album 4)an unplugged record 3)a greatest hits 2)a "covers" album 1)an album of re-recorded, remixed, updated hits.

As I've mentioned in some of my other reviews, such records, more often than not, become an artist's swan song (the examples are WAY too numerous to mention), since they are often the result of a contractual obligation, and many other times, they fortell the impending decline of a band that has little or nothing else to say. This record, containing RE-RECORDED, ACOUSTIC versions of some of their GREATEST HITS tops my list of "what not to do"!!! And sure enough, it became the band's swang song. (at least this lineup's...)

It's never a good idea to start toying around with your catalog, remixing and/or re-recording. And this is a good example of why: half of the new versions are "hits" (Ready for Love and Shooting Star the clearest examples)and the other are "misses" (Can't get enough, Oh Atlanta). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy acoustic music, but not when it's done at the expense of the rocking nature of the originals! Extra keyboards, backup singers, horns, string sections...they're all good, as long as you USE them and not ABUSE them.

And the original songs? they are pretty good, but they seem out of place in this context. In general, the record ends up being a little too soft for my taste, and a little too acoustic, and in the end, a little boring overall: I mean, one or two slower, acoustic songs are fine, but a record filled with them...it's too much for me...oh well...
Bottom Line: if you enjoy(ed) "Company of Strangers" and the band's original output, you'll probably find things to like in here, but if you're a hard rocker, this is probably not the right place to look...

1 out of 5 stars Worst Bad Company CD ever.......2006-05-10

Worst Bad Company CD ever. It was actually painful to here what they did to the classic Bad Company songs on this.

Even more dissappointing because the previous album Company of Strangers was their best non-Paul Rodgers album.

Save your money. Buy the original Bad Company or Free albums.

1 out of 5 stars The worst Bad Company cd.......2006-02-23

By far the worst of the Bad Company cd's. None of the tracks were worthwhile. May even have a different lead singer than Paul Rodgers. Do not buy

4 out of 5 stars THE END OF THE LINE.......2003-02-09

New Vocalist Hart proved that he could fill the Bad company vocal shoes with his debut cd, "Company of Strangers", which was one of their best cds ever, now Hart and Company is back with another great cd. They have some new songs, and re-recorded some old classics. "Ready for LOve", "Shooting Star","Can't Get Enough", never sounded better. "Weep No More" is awesome ballad, as is "Is That All There Is To Love". Shame this would this line-ups last cd, and a bigger shame no one really paid them much attention.

John Cohen's genius lies in his persistent devotion to the rawest, densest, and most playful shades of old-time music. Forty years ago he helped found the seminal New Lost City Ramblers--a band that continues to perform today--and began his life's work of documenting and mastering string-band music, especially the banjo. In the process he has exposed a whole new generation to old-time country played as it is meant to be--with passion, wit, and skill. Accompanied by David Grisman, Jody Stecher, and Sue Draheim, Cohen offers his first solo album, a smattering of familiar tunes such as "Cannonball," "Which Side Are You On?" and "Danville Girl." His voice cackles and cracks, and if not an easy listen, the songs reveal a secret history of American music. Fans of the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and contemporary bluegrass will recognize melodies and lyrics across this album, and perhaps hear in Cohen's banjo and moan a deep connection to acoustic music of all kinds. --Roy Kasten

Many readers might have seen and learned something of John in the Scorcese documentary about Dylan. In a great long career, he has created most kinds of art we know. This CD of oldtime music is a fine introduction to his singing and playing.

This is one of the finest DC's I have heard. John Cohen is not only an excellent singer but he has great taste in the choice of his music. If you can't see him live, then you must get this CD.My personal favorite is "My Name is John Johanna". He is faithful to the flavor of this music.

4 out of 5 stars Stories you'll want to hear.......2000-01-13

John Cohen is a member of the NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS but on this cd he has gone "solo", with a little help from his friends of course... David Grisman (mandolin, autoharp, etc...), Sue Draheim (fiddle), and Jody Stecher (fiddle, guitar, etc...).

The NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS have many great recordings, but if you're not already familiar with them I would suggest you start with this cd simply because this is the most crisply and perfectly recorded cd that any member of them has released. Although maybe someone could point to the other Acoustic Disc release, RETROGRASS, as a counter argument. I wouldn't argue with that actually, but I prefer the music on this cd more. The clear, ringing tone of the banjo on this cd is beautiful.

The mountain-banjo-style tracks are particularly great, such as CHILLY WINDS, CHINQUAPIN PIE, and TWIN SISTERS. Some of my favorites of the vocally-accompanied songs would be DANVILLE GIRL, WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?, and DARK HOLLER.

Like their musical predecessors the Band, the Sadies are a Canadian combo steeped in Americana. These guys, though, apparently spent as much time listening to Sergio Leone soundtracks as they did to Hank Williams records. The Sadies--brothers Dallas and Travis Good, who both sing and play guitar; drummer Mike Belitsky; and bassist Sean Dean--have a distinctive sound that hasn't varied much across three albums, and their fourth effort doesn't stray from the formula. But why mess with a good thing? Stories Often Told contains their patented mixture of reverb-heavy instrumentals ("Lay Down Your Arms," "A#1"), Stonesish country blues ("Within a Stone"), Byrdsy country-rock ("Such a Little Word"), garage rock ("Tiger Tiger"), and '60s psychedelia ("Of Our Land"). The Good brothers' mom, Margaret, even lends her voice to "A Steep Climb," a spooky little duet that sounds like something from an unfilmed David Lynch movie. --David Hill

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Busted! In Prison With The Sadies..........2007-06-24

On Stories Often Told, their fourth full length record, Toronto's Sadies, purveyors of genuine ticket 60's surf and Spaghetti western instrumentals and alternative country rock, strike dark chords musically and thematically. With Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor firmly at the production helm, The Sadies sing of physical and spiritual imprisonment and of the terrible price that being entrapped can exact. Richly melodic but eerie instrumentals are interspersed throughout this record and they serve to enhance the chilling feelings of frustration and emptiness that come from being "busted". The Sadies incorporate diverse influences such as The Band, ("Within A Stone"), Sergio Leone ("Mile Over Mecca", "A#1") and early Pink Floyd ("Of Our Land"), and serve up a wicked brew of world-weary tunes that bemoan the lack of available options when one is ensnared by greed, murderous deeds and failed familial and romantic relationships. Even animals can only eye their prey from circus train cages ("Tiger Tiger"). As grim as all this 'prison' talk sounds, the "different direction" that The Sadies ultimately take is to strum and sing away their snares. That they have a lot of fun singing and playing while trying to escape is reflected in this deceptively simple yet liberating record. Stories Often Told is steeped in the very best outlaw country and psychedelic folk rock traditions, all delivered with the unique Sadies deadpan vocal stylings. Ain't no hangman gonna put a noose around these dudes, that's for sure, buddy!

4 out of 5 stars Where has this band been hiding?.......2005-06-14

At least from me. I discovered the Sadies "on another channel" as they say, and they've become my favourite band. All five of their studio albums are very good, with Favorite Colors, the most recent, being the best. But get them all. Rip it to your MP3 player, mix them up and you'll get a great-sounding playlist. SOT is an eclectic work, lots of great instrumentals and some good vocals. "Of Our Land" is the standout, a psychedelic (!) gem--acid country. "Mile Over Mecca" is another goodie. I dislike labels, but "AltCountry-SpagettiWestern-SurfRock" fits this album pretty well.

Not to get carried away with unbridled enthusiasm, but this is one of the most compelling and riveting albums I have heard in years. "Rosebud* Bullets" has it all: great songwriting, captivating lyrics, dark harmonies, odd meters, top shelf instrumental work, and at the center of it all Myshkin's haunting vocals. Her voice is dynamic, brimming with quiet, mournful intensity one minute and boiling over with impassioned emotion the next.
There are almost too many highlights on this album to mention. "Bluebird" is a quietly beautiful jazz tinged song in five, with Laura Freeman's eire harmonica floating above Myshkin's lyrical singing. On the other end of the spectrum is the explosive "Rosie", which combines a traditional sounding fiddle melody with a crashing punk rock backbeat and driving surf guitar.

This guys just came outta no where to write some of the best thrash metal ever. No one before them and no one after has ever sounded like The Accused. Seattle had a good metal scene a couple of years before grunge took over, and The Accused were right at the top. If you've never checked out this band, this album is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars IT ...SHREDS!.......2002-10-25

Really I don't think that I've heard anything quite like the Accused before (surprisingly they were from my hometown.) Blaine is a wild man on the vocals. Sounds like a cross between Mike Dean of COC (Animosity era) and HR of Bad Brains. Still this doesn't pin down the maniacal straining screams and howls he belts out. The music is very evil sounding in a kind of funny sense and the lyrics are great always bring a demented smile to my face. Guitars are almost metal sounding though the production makes the punk spirit shine through. If you don't know about these guys already buy this album. It is unfortunately the only item that is still in print by this lost punk band.

    Album Description

Midnight roams. Dirty cities. Insomniac maniacs. Street vendor roses. Corner dwellers. Secret passageways. Glory. Heroes in stereo. Shanty towns. Night trains. Real eyes. Half wishes.

This is Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Faith Kleppinger's debut solo album, "Asleep In The Well" -- a stripped-down, woozy, late-night drift through softly-sung stories.

Unique lyrical observances and a dreamy sense of melody are the pillars of Kleppinger's songwriting. "Asleep In The Well" is a portrait of this talent loose and in the raw. Enjoy.

    3 out of 5 stars Stay Sleeping.......2003-11-29

Faith Kleppinger originally began her career as part of the seminal Atlanta-based roots-pop band, Little Bobby Taylors, but is finally releasing her atmospheric solo debut, Asleep In The Well. Kleppinger has some big expectations to live up to, as she's a current three-year vet of the CMJ New Music Marathon. Vocally reminiscent of Kristin Hersh without the throatiness and Courtney Love without the alcohol addiction, her singing is fragile and unsure of herself. One of the aspects, which will make Kleppinger stand out amongst her peers, are her observant imagistic lyrics which fuel the haunting (and perhaps Italo Calvino inspired) "City Three," and "Double Negative." Contributing to the disc are former Sugar-member David Barbe, and Blake Rainey who duets with Kleppinger on "Double Negative" and "Howlaround." Though Kleppinger might've fell asleep in the well with her latest album, it's evident she has enough talent and determination to claw her way out.

    5 out of 5 stars Indie Queen.......2002-05-17

Forget Cat Power - Faith Kleppinger is the queen of intimate indie rock.

5 out of 5 stars Songwriting at its Finest.......2002-05-17

If you like great music dreamy with a soft spoken delivery, this CD is for you. These stark songs all have their own unique beauty - especially City 3, Frames, and Runaround. This isn't folk music, but real songs played and displayed on an intimate level. Excellent debut!

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Casey Neill (and friends) !!!.......2007-02-09

In "portland west" punk rock folk legend Casey Neill is joined by musicians Zak Borden and Hanz Araki, combining Celtic folk, Americana, punk rock and protest music on this incredible cd. While I generally prefer folk music that's purely acoustic, the lush instrumentals on this cd are truly superb. While not as overtly political as his solo cd "Memory Against Forgetting", it does contain a couple of his more topical classics: "Angola", a heartbreaking prison song and "Riffraff", a rousing anthem celebrating raging grannies and crusty anarcho-punks. It also includes an excellent cover of the Springsteen song, "I'm On Fire". As this cd crosses many genres, it will appeal to many intelligent listeners with open minds and good taste.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Set.......2003-08-23

This is my 3rd CD by Casey Neill and band. Each disc is excellent, with this live set having a particular spark. Each track is distinct and fresh. From he opener "Lowground," to the closer "Stonewall," there is not a weak track. Casey's folk sound is peppy with a voice that has an edge and urgency. "Killing Thing" is one of those melodies that you find yourself humming after the disc is done. Neill's version of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" is thoroughly adopted and remade fresh in this acoustic setting. The more political track "Angola" is poignant and memorable. Casey Neill Trio is certainly a treat for anyone who likes their folk sound with a live wire running through it. Don't miss this one! Enjoy!

this band is incredible. i happended to be at the bar the night they recorded this album. it was completely by chance, but i fell in love with them imediately. after a few months passed i saw this cd at a local music store, instantly i bought it to see if the music was really that good or if it was jus tthe beer that made me enjoy the music that night. aparently it wasn't the alcohol, because this cd is great.

if you like NPR's thistle and shamrock you'll enjoy this cd. it's wonderful

4 out of 5 stars great contemporary folk trio.......2002-02-11

I haven't actually received my copy of the CD yet, but I heard "Riffraff" on WERU last weekend and realized that, probably somewhere on this recording, my whoops and cheers can be heard. I saw the show they played at the St. John's Pub that produced this recording. They are great showmen, with a lively folk sound of whistle, guitar, and fiddle - mixing American folk with more traditional Irish tunes. The St. John's is a great music space and they filled it with wonderful energy and warmth.
