Recorded in Nashville with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Robyn Hitchcock's 23rd solo album in as many years finds him continuing in the acoustic mold of Luxor but with a good dose of Americana, relying solely on the pair for accompaniment, backing vocals, and production. According to Hitchcock, Spooked is essentially the product of a weeklong Dylan-fueled jam session with Welch and Rawlings, a fan of whose Hitchcock had recently become but who had been fans of his for nearly 20 years. "It was as if I was inside one of their records, but with me singing too," said Hitchcock about the sessions, and their influence is indeed palpable, most notably on songs like the folksy "English Girl," with its plaintive guitar and Wurlitzer accompaniment, and the slide-heavy, drum-propelled "We're Gonna Live in the Trees."

Yet the real standout tracks are those to which Welch and Rawlings lend their harmonic talents, such as "Demons and Fiends" and especially "Television." The latter, an earnest, pleading song of love, is among the most heartfelt of Hitchcock's career, even with his bedroom TV set its nominal object. ("Television, I'm so sorry / If I turned you off back then / I'm so small in your dimension / My kid will look like you, I swear.") So it remains a safe bet that there never will be a Robyn Hitchcock album that can't be described at least partially as "quirky"--this one certainly fits the bill. But being able to express penetrating insight and emotion through superficially bizarre material has always been one of his major talents, and Spooked demonstrates that, at age 51, Robyn Hitchcock's best days are definitely not behind him. --Benjamin Lukoff

If you have a penchant for moody, mysterious songs, ethereal vocals, and ringing acoustic timbres, you'll flip over this Robyn Hitchcock album. Backed by the brilliant duo of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (the latter also produced Spooked), Hitchcock spins an unpredictable web of psychedelic, bohemian, and folky sounds. Layers of understated guitar, Dobro, Wurlitzer, and percussion draw you in, while allowing Hitchcock's expressive voice and edgy lyrics to dominate the mix. Rawlings has a knack for crafting unusual guitar parts -- sometimes his 6-string drones like a dulcimer, sometimes it shimmers like a miniature piano. Though quiet, this album is intense, and snippets of odd sounds dart here and there adding an eerie vibe to the essentially acoustic tracks. Hitchcock's comic impersonation of an interplanetary tour guide keeps this dazzling work from getting too dark.

I was surprised at how warm this CD was after the rather detached coolness of LUXOR. Everything here is open, relaxed and comfortable. "Flanagan's Song", "Sometimes a Blonde" and "We're Gonna Live in the Trees" are classics. I'm not terribly impressed with "English Girl", but everything else more than makes up for one comparatively weak song. A must-have for fans of The Man, and for those who enjoy the alt-bluegrass sound.

It's somewhat disturbing that reviews of Robyn's work seem to always include the word "quirky". I, too, am guilty of having used this word in at least one review of one of Robyn's earlier albums. I will never use this word about Robyn's music again.

Okay, now that I've gotten that noise out of the way: This is really a great album! I do not find the song "Television" especially sad. Thoughtful and thought-provoking, yes. Maybe this is the spookiest song...just can't quite imagine RH having a significant relationship with a television. I find "English Girl" a sad song, "Creeped Out" makes me laugh, "We're Gonna Live in the Trees" both prophetic *and* funny. The Dylan cover ("Trying to Get to Heaven...") is simply gorgeous, "Flanagan's Song" just walks straight into my soul, pitches a tent, lights a fire and now lives permanently inside me. My one contention with any of the material on SPOOKED is with "Welcome to Earth", which is otherwise an absolute dead-on, knee-slapping hoot. Dear Robyn, Ravens DO express ideas and don't always keep them to themselves...you just need to spend enough time out in the woods listening to them. Live in the Trees long enough, treat the ravens well, learn to speak raven and they'll share their ideas.

Robyn, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings work together superbly. The chemistry is miraculous, seamless, awe-inspiring. I can tell this is one CD that will stay with me and be listened to again and again. There's nothing on Earth quite like SPOOKED and you'll be missing something great if you let it get away.

If the eighth album from these grizzled rounders sounds like what would happen if you paired a dyed-in-the-old-time-wool string band with a genius producer of '60s pop music, that's because it is. Working with Brian Wilson cohort and legendary lyricist/arranger Van Dyke Parks (who, along with producing, chips in on keyboards, marimba, and chimes), Marley's Ghost don't need an orchestra to create a wall of sound. With sparkling autoharp, pedal steel, bouzouki, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and high-strung guitars, their approach suggests the folk-pop expeditions of Dillard and Clark, with traditional string interplay that's rich with detail and nuance: sometimes as lush and airy as countrypolitan, sometimes as funky as a Skillet Lickers 78. The songs cover the folk landscape, from cowboy lullabies to fiddle tunes, roving balladry to sea chanteys, and gospel hymns to satirical waltzes. If some of the country-rock arrangements flirt with Eagles-lite, their version of Dylan's "The Wicked Messenger" pierces the heart of the lyric's enigmas with Don Heffington's hand drum and Jay Thomas's eerie saxophone lines. The creaky lead vocals of Mike Phelan and Ed Littlefield Jr. won't make you forget the Beach Boys or the Stanley Brothers, but the band's harmonies are surely in that tight, sweet tradition. --Roy Kasten

Since forming 20 years ago, Marley's Ghost has built a singular reputation among discerning roots-music lovers for its ultra-tight four-part harmonies, instrumental virtuosity, and animated live performances. On Spooked, the band's eighth album but its first to receive a full-fledged national release, Marley's Ghost creates a musically sophisticated, thematically rich piece of work that serves as a belated coming-out party for a band that deserves to be more widely heard.

The album bears the stamp of two legendary figures whose idiosyncratic skills match up beautifully with the band's own--composer/arranger/player Van Dyke Parks, who jumped at the chance to produce, and cartoonist R. Crumb, who illustrated the package.

According to Van Dyke Parks, "I simply tried to strengthen the group's conviction. For example, I insisted they do things to bring enunciation to the parts they played. We'd double guitar parts using techniques I'd learned from people like Brian Wilson. I dragged these guys through the production mud. I've never worked harder or had more fun on a record."

For the album, recorded at the Sage Arts Studio on the rustic banks of "an unpronounceable river" in Washington state, Parks brought in such renowned players as guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Buell Neidlinger, and drummer Don Heffington to complement the core band on select tracks. With the goal of delivering an album "that will have some degree of permanence," Parks became an auxiliary band-member himself, playing piano, Hammond B-3 organ, marimba and chimes. "I got to be the fifth wheel and enjoyed it immensely," he says.

One of the reference points for Spooked was Ry Cooder's self-titled 1970 debut, which Parks arranged and co-produced. Another was the Band's 1968 landmark, Music from Big Pink. The album contains 12 originals that range from such deftly witty and satirical compositions as "Get Off the Track," "Last Words," "There's Religion in Rhythm," and "The Ballad of Johnny Hallyday" to touches of stone country ("High Walls"), white gospel ("Last Words," "Old-Time Religion") and the Stephen Foster-steeped "Love, Not Reason." The band also covers Bob Dylan's "Wicked Messenger" and the Civil War-era "Sail Away, Ladies," which salutes the album's closing track, "Seaman's Hymn."

The front cover, illustrated by R. Crumb, depicts a decidedly "spooked" Marley's Ghost. The back cover depicts the same band spellbound and transformed, smiling upwards at an intertwined mermaid and devil. Marley's Ghost member Dan Wheetman used to be in Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders. Crumb is a fan of Marley's Ghost's music.

Marley's Ghost is comprised of Dan Wheetman (vocals, bass, rhythm guitar, fiddle, harmonica, banjo, Dobro, lap steel), Jon Wilcox (vocals, mandolin, rhythm guitar, guitar, bouzouki), Mike Phelan (vocals, lead guitar, fiddle, Dobro, bass, lap steel), and Ed Littlefield Jr. (vocals, pedal steel guitar, Highland bagpipes, keyboards, mandolin, Dobro, lead guitar). They make their homes along the West Coast variously between Northern California and Washington state.

Marley's Ghost and Van Dyke Parks count among my favorites, so I had high hopes for this. But it's all kind of muddled and not quite right. Even if there's some good stuff here, "Live at the Freight" this ain't. Even among their studio albums, there's better. Certainly, none of the other Marley's Ghost albums sound as non-Marley as this.

Having enjoyed this band for some 20+ years as a house band of sorts for the Strawberry Music festivals, Mather Camp Yosemite, I'm a long time fan and I feel an affinity for the idea of these local guys making it. Well, at least in my eyes, they have, I hope some financial rewards follow suit, it's clear they love what they're doing. I hope they come back to Strawberry again this year! When you read Van Dyke Parks comments above about his production efforts, have no fear of overproduction, it's spot on, certainly more subtle/tasteful use of horns than in previous releases. In fact, the first half of this disc is a remarkable song cycle that showcases the bands many talents and tastes in music, the sequencing is near perfect. While I enjoyed the later half of the disc as well, great songs like, "There's Religion in Rhythm!", the flow achieved through the first six tunes is not sustained. Regardless of this minor point, the guys are in fine voice, the whismsy abounds, the playing astounds, so you're in store for a grinning journey ala their wonderous folkreggaeshantygrass stylings, I highly recommend this disc, check it out, you'll see what I mean.

    When you think about the best, most consistent hard rock and metal bands, Pretty Maids never jumps out at you. Which is odd, considering the Danish band can always be counted on to release top quality melodic hard rock/metal albums.

    It's hard finding a good point of comparison for this band. Westworld meets Jorn Lande's solo material comes closest, though Pretty Maids' vocals are not as distinctive as Tony Harnell's or Jorn Lande's. That comparison definitely captures Pretty Maids' melodic hard rock meets metal style though. Pretty Maids is heavier than the typical Frontiers melodic rock band, but not as heavy as a straight-up metal band.

    The band's 1997 album Spooked is a solid album from start to finish. You won't find any traces of grunge, rap-metal, or alterna-rock here; just plenty of great hard rock songs, including a cover of the KISS classic Hard Luck Woman. Spooked is a very heavy, yet very melodic album that should appeal to anyone who enjoys hard rock, AOR/melodic rock, and/or metal.
