DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
What can you say - it's Segovia!.......2007-02-10
I saw Segovia perform live in my youth. What a treat! Anyone who loves Classical Guitar should love this collection.
EVERYBODY KNOWS.......2007-01-13
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).
Immortal guitar.......2006-08-02
Two CD's with Segovia's immortal music - an incredible treat at a great price!
WOW.......2006-02-23
Even though there is hiss from the original analog recordings this one is a must. Segovia! What more can you say. Anyone who likes classical guitar will love this.

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A Stellar Major-Label Debut!.......2007-04-03
A solid example of a major label debut, 1977's Sin After Sin, while unnoticed at the time, stands as a foundation to the mighty heights that Judas Priest would soon exceed. Not as dark and morbid as what Sad Wings Of Destiny was or what Stained Class would become, this release occupies a still-powerful middle ground between those two landmarks. Highlights include "Sinner" (easily one of the best driving songs ever), "Let Us Prey/ Call For The Priest", "Starbreaker", "Raw Deal" & (on the 2001 remaster only) "Race With The Devil".
A Secret Gem in the Priest Catalog.......2007-03-27
The first album I bought from Judas Priest was BRITISH STEEL (1980), which was a fun, likable album, but it struck me as kindergarten pop metal, if you know what I mean. Not long after that I picked up HELL BENT FOR LEATHER (1979), which was similar to BRITISH STEEL but quite a bit more mature. I then ventured to explore their three mighty late 70's releases: SAD WINGS OF DESTINY (1976), SIN AFTER SIN (1977) and STAINED CLASS (1978). These three albums tower in the Priest catalog. All three are very different-sounding; the Priest boys didn't regurgitate ideas, material or sound, that's for sure.
I recently picked up the remastered version of SIN AFTER SIN and, let me tell you, the sound is noticeably better; it's much more crisp and in-your-face than the non-remastered CD (which I used to own).
I always had a problem with the production of this recording. The guitars are clear and crisp, but they're not heavy, which is sacriledge in metal circles (of course, metal was still being invented at the time). The drum performance by guest-musician Simon Phillips is superb, but the drums themselves sound almost muddled. Still, I'm not one to nitpick; I accept and embrace the album 100% as is.
Allow me the privilege of evaluating the 8 songs and 2 bonus tracks:
(1.) "Sinner" (6:41): This is a smokin' and intense upper-mid-paced lead track featuring simple riffs and a slight gothic air. The lyrics are sci-fi/fantasy oriented dealing with the titular "Sinner," his 'god' the devil and "War" apparently searching for carcasses of war or some sh*t. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(2.) "Diamonds and Rust" (3:23): This is a rock remake of Joan Baez' folk song and was a minor hit for the band. It sounds completely different than the superior Baez version. It was never my cup of tea and it doesn't jell with the feel of the rest of the album (with the exception of "Last Rose of Summer"). Personal Rating: 2.5/5 Stars.
(3.) "Starbreaker" (4:47): A catchy mid-paced number, not to mention underrated in the Priest catalog. The titular "Starbreaker" is a character reminiscent of Marvel Comics' Silver Surfur. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.
(4.) "Last Rose of Summer" (5:36): A sickly sentimental ballad. The vibe is the antithesis of everything Judas Priest is. God, I hate this song! I always skip it. Personal Rating: 1/5 Stars.
(5.) "Let Us Prey/Call For the Priest" (6:12): This song starts out with a 1.5 minute intro wherein Rob Halford sings "Call for the priest, I'm DYYYYIIIIINNNNGGG." The following "Let Us Prey" is the prototype for progressive, near-speed metal. An incredible piece from 1977, to say the least. The lyrics are equal parts creative, ambiguous and intriguing; they partially criticize the cynical slander of journalists. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(6.) "Raw Deal" (5:58): A slower mid-paced number with psychedelic elements. Interesting and atypical. The lyrics address Halford's surreal experience in a pub and the resulting trouble. The song powerfully ends with Rob screaming out "I give my life; I am immortal!" followed by a musical piece that deviates from the rest of the song. Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.
(7.) "Here Come the Tears" (4:36): Now this is how Priest REALLY does a ballad. According to the lyrics, Halford evidently feels alone and unloved. He sings: "All alone, no one cares. So much to give to you all out there. Take me now in your arms. Let me rest safe from harm." The heavy guitars then suddenly kick-in as Rob SCREAMS out for love. Trust me, it's one of the most emotionally potent pieces in the entire history of song. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(8.) "Dissident Aggressor" (3:06): The is the final original track and it kicks a$$. It starts out eerily with various gothic-tinged sound effects and builds up to Halford's blood-curdling falsetto accompanied by incredibly aggressive and intense riffs. The lyrics address a dissident from (the former) East Germany who seeks to by-pass "the impregnable wall." It's only a 3 minute song but it's powerful, innovative and remarkable. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
BONUS TRACKS: "Race with the Devil" (3:06) is an obscure early-Priest rocker. It's worth it just for the intro, which is reminiscent of Mercyful Fate's early work. "Jawbreaker" (4:00) is an enjoyable live version of the song that was originally released on Priest's 1984 DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH album.
FINAL ANALYSIS: SIN AFTER SIN stands with the best albums in the Priest catalog. It's unique, innovative, gothic-tinged and very different-sounding than their 80's output, not to mention more mature and intricate.
Halford sings "No one cares" in "Here Come the Tears." He's wrong.
In any event, I refuse to even take calls from people that don't have SIN AFTER SIN in their listening arsenal.
Listen and learn, my son.
Sinner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-15
Judas Priest's career has been built around cheesy but well-meaning anthems, short on substance but laden with leather-clad Heavy Metal appeal. With this in mind, `Sin After Sin' seems like an oddity, and a relic of an age long since passed. And that's exactly what it is.
By modern standards, the production values of this album seem quaint and understated. The guitars lack bite and the drums are somewhat leaden. Luckily, Rob Halford's clarion call voice shines through the murk. The subject matter of the songs seems somewhat grey and despondent. Song titles like "Last Rose Of Summer", "Here Come The Tears", and "Call For The Priest/Raw Deal" might not seem out of place on a Goth album. At the time this album was recorded, Judas Priest had plenty to be gloomy about, because Heavy Metal was apparently on its last legs. In 1977, spiked hair, ripped jeans and safety pins were sweeping aside musical pre-requisites like an ability to play an instrument, hold a tune or write a song. Punk was the answer to the question of where Rock should head, which must have been a pretty dumb question if Punk was the best answer. Bands like Judas Priest and their ilk were destined for extinction, a supposed dead end branch of Rock's evolution.
Like the mammalians of the time of the great dinosaur extinction 65 million years ago, Judas Priest adapted and survived. First off, "Sinner" is the earliest example of those unforgettable anthems. It has the strongest riff on the album and a memorable refrain, with Halford unleashing a helium-fuelled falsetto. "Diamonds And Rust" electrified Joan Baez's Folk standard, but surprisingly, it's completely indistinguishable from Priest's own material.
"Last Rose Of Summer" and "Here Come The Tears" are ballads which might have seemed more at home on an Elton John record in the '70s, except for the odd power chord. "Let Us Prey" lives up to the album's gloomy image with its intro, but then rocks off with double kick drums, dual guitar harmonies and a truckload of riffs. "Dissident Aggressor" is a case of saving the best until last. The heavy, driving main riff is accompanied by thunderous drumming from session drummer Simon Phillips. Rob Halford let rip, with his soaring multi-tracked vocals and the six-string duo of Glenn Tipton and KK Downing also had a licence to shred in what is a short, sharp punch to close the album.
Despite the flat production, `Sin After Sin' is oddly compelling. Crank the volume and all the studio induced problems disappear. Ultimately, `Sin After Sin' doesn't have the instant appeal of later classic albums like `British Steel', `Killing Machine', or `Screaming For Vengeance', but it is a far more thoughtful album, with much more substance.
MY FAVORITE JUDAS PRIEST ALBUM!.......2006-02-12
This is my favorite Judas Priest album. Every song is a classic here. This is the album to start with if you don't know Judas Priest yet. Rob Halford is one of the best singers in the world and he shows it. The guitarplay is wonderful! Listen how fast he plays the solo's! Just great. I have this album since 1996 now, and I still listen this album very much. I even think this is one of the best metal albums ever made. One of the, not the best. Rob Halfords voice is perfect here, later in his career he starts to sing with a kinda raw voice, he doesn't do that here with his first albums yet. I also think this is his best vocal performance ever! Great album! Highly recommended!
Sinner!.......2005-12-04
I'm giving this album about 4.5 stars. The song "Sinner" is enough to make it a Priest classic, but "Diamonds and Rust" and "Jawbreaker" are also great songs. While you should get Sad Wings of Destiny or Painkiller before you get this album, Sin After Sin is still a classic Priest record.

The Viennese waltz is never far from violinist Andre Rieu's heart, but you won't find a single work from Johann Strauss on Life Is Beautiful. This time around, Rieu is globetrotting for his hummable, danceable melodies--to solid results. "Ole Guapa" is a tango featuring accordion; "Kalinka" is a familiar Russian tune; and "Amazing Grace," "Snow White," and Rieu's "Glenn Miller Melody" are tried-and-true American. Throughout, Rieu and his orchestra perform these works with plenty of style and polish; it's easy to see why he's such a hit with public-television audiences. His shortened version of Bolero may not be the sexiest available, but it is fun. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Romantic.......2003-09-10
Andre Rieu captures the romantic's heart once again in this, what is for the most part, a passionate album.
I feel the best tracks on this album are the russian-themed ones, like the title track (which I listen to on REPEAT when I am looking through my russian countryside or Romanov family album books). I feel that this and "Lara's Theme" (Maurice Jarre's love theme from the film DR. ZHIVAGO (a wonderful book and DVD)! conveys the passion for homeland which I strongly feel beats strongest in the hearts of all russians, more than than any other people). These compositions are so beautiful that it brings tears to the eyes if one surrenders oneself to them.
andre rieu.......2002-09-04
all i can say about andre,s music is i have over 15 cd,s and love ever one and rate them 5 stars.
Andre Rieu.......2001-09-28
I am a big fan of Andre Rieu but didnot enjoy this as much as several of his earlier recordings. It didn't have quite the zip as "Andre Rieu Live" or "The Holland I Love".
Music is beautiful.......2001-09-11
As soon as I saw Ravel's Bolero performed by Andre Rieu on PBS I wanted to have a copy of this beautiful album.. classical music that makes you get up and dance..

Uneven, but still good.......2006-07-04
This is a bridge between the doomy excellence of "Sad Wings of Destiny" and the unqualified brilliance of "Stained Class". Does it stack up to either of those? Not really, though it is certainly worth checking out.
This is an uneven work. There is plenty of good, heavy stuff on offer. "Sinner" and "Dissident Aggressor" are two of the best songs they've ever done. However, the two ballads, "Last Rose Of Summer" and "Here Come The Tears" let the album down, as does the hit-single attempt of "Diamonds and Rust" (subsequent live versions, both heavy and acoustic, are much better) and the almost danceable (!) "Starbreaker".
You get a taste of what's to come with the heaviness and twin guitar harmonies of "Call For The Priest/Raw Deal" and "Let Us Prey" (the latter giving some personal insight into our Halfie's interests). Downing and Tipton are fine, you can actually hear Ian Hill (unlike throughout most of the '80s) and session drummer Simon Phillips is quite good.
Even though this is not their most consistent work, it is still worthy of a place in your collection.
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!.......2004-07-11
i may be only 13 but let me tell you i trully appreciate my music.Sin After Sin of one Judas Priests finest and in my opinion "here come the the tears" to "dissident aggressor" is one of the greatest fade ins of all time. the songs on this album show so much emotion its amazing. its also no wonder how judas priest set the stage for many bands. Thanx for reading this, jake
STRONG - GOOD - SUPREME.......2001-09-18
The first album in Columbia / CBS by Priest. IT's just astonishing how Judas could always change their sound completely from one album to another, and still sound good !! As for the music here, reviewer DAniel Pinto said it all. I particularly love this album, love all the PRIEST albuns with the following exceptions: TURBO, RAM IT DOWN, JUGULATOR and DEMOLITION. They do not suck, but are not in the same league of their other albuns.
SIMON PHILLIPS STEALS THE SHOW.......2001-08-28
Judas Priest's 3rd album finds themselves in transition for the 3rd time. Priest's early output was amazing in the sense that not only were 2 albums not alike, no 2 songs were alike as well. Ask Judas Priest themselves and they'll tell you THIS is their first album. They got such a bum deal at Gull that they refuse to even ackowledge the 1st 2. SINNER is the bonafide Priest classic on this one, although all the tracks are strong (with the exeption of the wimpy Diamonds and Rust). For a better studio version of DAR check out Hero Hero. Deep Purple's Roger Glover turns in a great job as producer on this one, the slick production makes mincemeat out of the 1st 2. But the real star here is ace session man SIMON PHILLIPS on drums. Simon is without doubt the best drummer that ever participated in a Priest effort. He simply puts on a clinic with each track. Like the previous 2 efforts, this album is all over the place in terms of the style of music they elect to play. With SINNER, JP got away with a cut and paste job and created a metal classic. Close examination reveales that this is just a bunch of stuff strung together. But hey, it works, all those parts are very strong, and KK has a nice, reverb drenched, dive bomber solo in the middle section. A couple of nice time signitures as well. STARBREAKER is a little different than anything JP did before or after SIN After SIN. Sounds a little Deep Purple-ish to me. I suspect this was written in the studio with Rog. The middle (Starbreaker take my hand) is more than a little bluesy and sounds a lot like Blackmore in riffing and guitar sound. LAST ROSE's intro is a cop of an old Hendrix riff that pays big dividends, but again where does this fit in with the Sin after Sin concept? Its a very good song, although its lacks a middle 8, I'm surprised nobody has covered this yet. Okay so far we have a progressive metal epic, a commercial pop song, a blues number, and a ballad. The second half of this album picks up the Sin after Sin Theme again, with LET US PREY. Let us Prey simply rocks. Its an epic that has the structure that SINNER lacks, and a continuation of the Glen Tipton classical style guitar break that you hear in the 2nd lead in TYRANT, the 2nd lead in EXCITER, and also in parts of FREEWHEEL BURNING. I like to call this type of song the formula song. Glen uses it again and again and it always works. CALL FOR THE PRIEST continues the SIN AFTER SIN theme and comes off as sort of a spooky, one of a kind song that nobody else could concieve except early JP. Next, we have a trio of songs that seem to be connected. RAW DEAL is a sort of lounge act that sets up a mood for a half acoustic number, HERE COME THE TEARS/DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR. Here we see another formula in the essence of DREAMER DECEIVER/DECEIVER. Although Here Come the Tears is a strong track, the lyrics suffer a bit from the self pity theme. It does build up to a huge crecendo and explodes into DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR, which is truly a chaotic metal masterpiece. Ever notice the HERE COME THE TEARS REPRISE they throw in there? Nice touch. Sin After Sin seemed to be the 3rd of 4 doom and gloom themed albums. The old english logo was gone after this album too. It is interesting how ROCKA ROLLA had flashes of SAD WINGS, and SAD WINGS had flashes of SIN AFTER SIN, and SIN AFTER SIN had flashes of STAINED CLASS, which of course, the crowning acheivment of early Priest. After that they mellowed a bit and started the proverbial SELL OUT with HELL BENT. Lastly, I'd like to point out that this album was released during the midst of a punk rock explosion, so it didnt do very well. Columbia must of thought a lot of Priest to give them this much free reign in the studio, after all, this type of songwriting was DEAD in 1977. With STAINED CLASS, gone were the 7 to 9 minute 3 part epics, and in were the 3 to 4 minute speedy numbers. They also tried an image change, and got rid of those salvation army clothes that ULI ROTH laughs at. They would not be able to retain SIMON PHILLIPS, but finally got a more than adequate drummer in LES BINKS. Besides...an empty chair was better than Alan Moore....
Good but not great.......2001-07-07
They definitely changed their sound on this one. What happened to the guitar sound?Theres no edge to it.Very week sounding compared to the other 2.Seems like they went a little soft on some songs-Last Rose and Star Breaker.I like Here come the Tears.Very moody.Best tune is Dissident Agressor.Wow, this song kicks.Love the opening Halford delivers and the guitar rhythm is very metallic. Overall, a good album that lost some edge sound wise.Great album cover too.

Priest's major label debut.......2005-06-23
Sin After Sin (1977.) Judas Priest's third album.
In the mid-seventies, a little-known hard rock band from Great Britain known as Judas Priest emerged onto the rock scene. Their first album, Rocka Rolla, wasn't too successful in any part of the world, but it showed that these guys were a band with potential. The follow-up, Sad Wings Of Destiny, showed us what these guys were fully capable of. Following the release of Sad Wings Of Destiny, someone must have heard it and been very impressed, because the guys got a deal with a major record label. In 1977, they released their third studio album, Sin After Sin. And to make things even better, every Judas Priest album from Sin After Sin to Painkiller has recently been remastered and given two unreleased bonus tracks (usually an unreleased studio session and an unreleased live session.) Read on for my review of Sin After Sin.
The opener, Sinner, is a prime example of straight-up classic metal, with a very slight but noticable melodic touch. In this track, Halford's vocals are simply killer. Diamonds And Rust is a cover of an old Joen Baez song (she was a fairly famous recording artist from the hippie era.) This song is a little weird because it's so much different from what you're used to hearing from Judas Priest, but it's still a good one. Starbreaker, on the other hand, is classic British hard rock at its very best. Halford's vocals, as usual, are excellent. One of the guitar riffs in this song was later used in their biggest hit, You've Got Another Thing Coming. If the title of Last Rose Of Summer didn't give it away, it slows things down a bit. Basically, what you get here is a slow, melodic ballad. It's a good track - surprising since Priest is recognized for being a classic METAL band. Let Us Prey/Call For The Priest kicks off with some excellent guitar riffs and "chanted" vocals, giving the first few moments a "holy" sound. Before long, it becomes a classic NWOBHM assault on your senses that you won't soon forget. Great song. With Raw Deal, the band does what just about every British hard rock band of the day was trying to do. This one's got some good vocals, but ultimately, it's probably the weakest track here - it's not a bad one, though. Here Come The Tears is a very interesting track due to style fusion. Though it starts out as a slow and melodic ballad using a piano and acoustic guitars, it quickly adds electric guitar riffs into the mixture. Surprisingly, the style fusion works well. Dissident Aggressor, the closing track (to the original version of the album) is the fastest one on the album, and it's no less heavy than the previous ones. Once again, Halford's vocals steal the show.
You get two bonus tracks on this reissue of the album. Race With The Devil is an excellent example of early British hard rock/heavy metal. It sounds like what a number of bands were trying to do in the early seventies, just after the discovery of heavy metal. Although this track steals the riff from UFO's Doctor Doctor, it's still an excellent one, and I'm glad to see it finally get an official release. The closer is a live version of Jawbreaker, a track that wouldn't actually make it to a studio album until 1984. This live version is less polished and of lower sound quality than its finished brother, but it's still a good track overall.
If you're a fan of classic hard rock/heavy metal, Sin After Sin is a highly recommended album. THIS is what heavy metal is supposed to sound like, unlike the garbage that has been flooding the airwaves in recent years. Just make sure you buy the remastered edition, or you'll miss out on the bonus tracks!
