Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14
I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.
Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.
The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)
The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.
"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.
"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.
"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.
When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.
To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it
The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05
I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!
Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19
You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.
What Great Music.......2003-05-11
I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.
super.......2003-04-17
What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

mindboggling.......2006-01-07
After I listened to this album the first time, I couldn't remove my jaw from the floor. In fact, with each listen afterwards, my jaw continued to drop in sheer amazement at the wondrous music that permeates every last second of this superb album. I bought this when it was first released and continue to listen to it frequently to this day. Yeah, it's that good.
What amazes me is how a band such as Abyssos can go this unnoticed, especially when there are other bands releasing albums nowhere near the brilliance encountered here. Just when you thought a song couldn't possibly get any better, it does. And it should too, especially since each one clocks in between 7-9 minutes.
I wouldn't necessarily say that this album re-defines the genre, but the music it contains simply perfects it, reaching a level that no other band could probably achieve. Here we have a wonderful mix of melodic death, then furious black metal assaults, and even some thrashy elements thrown in as well; it's a veritable potpourri of various styles and influences, including such greats as Dissection and Dark Funeral, yet at the same it maintains a truly unique level of originality. Brooding synth and keyboard arrangements are dispersed throughout as well, in addition to haunting male and female vocals sung with such a degree of disdain that the emotion factor will utterly floor you. Song after song, nothing ever gets boring because each riff is so outstanding that you probably wouldn't mind listening to it for the full 65 minutes this album reaches. And what amazes me is that the whole thing was written by one man.
Spectacular.......2003-08-01
After finding their first album in some totally obscure section of a used CD store i was immediately blown away by Abyssos. Needless to say as soon as i could get my hands on this cd i was excited to listen to it. After the first time through the entire CD i was in complete awe. This CD improves dramatically in my opinion on the first. It seems to me as well that this is a different sounding CD that the original as well while the first cd had Children of Bodom type moments of "happy metal" this album really is just pure atmospheric, melodic, black metal. A non stop assault on the drums punctuated by ripping guitars throughout, mixed sporadically with some lovely piano and various other classical instruments make this a wonderful listen.
There is no denying that this album is pure black metal, but unlike most "pure" black metal releases this album has the production quality to back it up. IF i had to find some fault with this album the only thing that i could think of would be the [similarities to] a Dissection riff on the first song but other than that this album is rock solid.
If you liked their first album then you need to own this album if you havnt heard the first album but you like bands such as Dissection, Summoning, Sear Bliss, Dark Funeral, or Naglfar (not to say that they sound like all these bands but these are bands that i listen to and i love this album) then you need to buy this album. Amazing work.
Phantoms of the Vampyre Opera.......2001-12-14
Let me tell you, I was surprised to find this album wasting away in the discount bin of my local used CD store. No doubt I picked it up with a sheepish grin and listened to it on my way home, but did not fully understand and appreciate the melodic majesty until I had sufficient peace the next night and digested the compositions as sleep gripped me tight...
Being the brainchild of two (YES, 2- if you don't count the session vocals) artists, Abyssos' 'Fhinstanian Nightbreed' is a densely layered creation that mixes black metal elements with operatic and heavily melodic discourse. By "operatic" I do not intend to suggest that they sound anything like the unique Nightwish styled artists... it is hard to explain: expect a black metal experience with select operatic parts on both female and male vocals. I still cannot explain why the first track, "Masquerade In the Flames (Another Black Friday)" sounds like a lost performance from 'The Phantom of the Opera.' Maybe its because the vocalist envokes the Phantom's familiar voice and style during some sections (as found on any 1986 compilations with the original cast).
The songs on this album are very well conceived and prove that talent does not depend on numbers, as Abyssos easily dissmember the 9 man outfit Slipknot. Afterall, you'd better sound complex if you have a high number of "artists"... look at Therion, Theatre of Tragedy, etc and then compare the primitive and shallow output from Slipknot...
The title track, "Fhinstanian Nightbreed", brings a smile to my face each time I listen to it as it reminds me of the Final Fantasy video game soundtracks. And the other instrumental, "She Only Flies at Night" is a pleasure to listen to! This short (I want more) piano piece reminds of classical compositions. What else can I say about this album beside that it is very well composed, each song has multiple movements and sections, and the sound is breathtaking...
Though the pricetag of this oft overlooked band is a bit daunting, I would still suggest devising a way to get your hands on this one (hell, try to find it used!).
wow... this is nice.......2001-04-27
I love anything heavy with a melodic edge to it. This CD is quite brilliant, the guitars have some super melodic riffs. I'd have to say this isn't just black metal, it's a mix of black metal and melodic death. And it's sweet! more bands should join this genre. i'm not a huge fan of straight black metal, so i was a bit sceptical at first, but it really grew on my after the first or second listen. My favorite track is the last one, Whenever the witches fly, the melodies are awesome! no vocals, which i don't mind because i could always do without death vocals most of the time :) not that they're bad, but they don't add much in my mind, it's all about the melodies, and honestly it's hard to make a catchy melody when you're monotone growling :)
Genious........2000-04-01
This album totally sends out a sound of talent. Sounding like an entire band, the work of Rehn on two guitars, bass and keyboard accompanied by Soderlund on drums puts down the entire commercialised Heavy Metal scene. The guitar riffs and drumming can put any of those bands to shame. The problem with these guys and the ret of the Black Metal scene is that they are not getting enough publicity. If this band alone comes to light, the likes of Kor, Limp, Chamber, Slipknot will have alot to work up to. This album is highly reccommended to those into Black Metal or want a new approach to metal in general. Get it, now.

Good Overview.......2000-01-13
This provides a good overview of many hard to find Gothic acts. For me Athamay and Faithful Dawn are the highlights but I'm into gryl bands. There are also samples of none gryl stuff like the heavly distorted vioces of Midnight configuration. This isn't the light 4AD or classical stuff but hard core death and blood electronic/industrial Goth. Enjoy.
