4 out of 5 stars One of the finer and heavier Sab tributes..........2001-12-03

This is the domestic version of Earache's tribute to Sabbath, and if you are a fan of Earache records you realize that the label's legendary roster of extreme metal and grindcore were the very darkest and most visceral proponents of the shadowed side of music that Iommi and co. brought forth in the early 70's. Thus it is no surprise at all that this cd represents some of the hardest hitting as well as most original recreations of Sabbath on record. Cathedral, who is Sab Incarnate of the 90's and whom even won over Iommi significantly enough to gain a solo from him on one their song "Utopian Blaster," lead the pack here, straight out of the gate with the beginning and ending pieces on this record-- both beautiful and surreal dark masterpieces. Sleep do a wonderfully over-codeined version of "Snowblind" and and Fudge Tunnel will rip your face off with their grunge metal performance of-- get this!-- "Changes." (!) Godflesh and Pitch Shifter add some industrial metal to the mix, with Godflesh's inspired choice of Gillan-era Sabbath winning most spooky metal cover ever, complete with tolling bells. Scorn reconstructs "The Wizard" into a dark dub trip-hop that is superb, and OLD's eerie, spacy synthwork in their retooling of "Who Are You" has to be heard. Perhaps the only cover that doesn't fully work is Ultraviolence's "Paranoid" which forsakes the crunch rock fuzz of the original for hard hyper techno that comes close to gabber, but even then the reason for the failure isn't the effort or the quality factor, just that it's so strange a listen. From start to "miserable" end this is one impressive lineup and some equally impressive rock-werk. Without a doubt a most fearless and enigmatic brew... note: the import Japanese version includes Catherdral's "Shockwave" and Cadaver's "Sweet Leaf," left off here.

4 out of 5 stars Great album to drive too... at night :).......1999-09-05

Okay, I admit, when I first listened to it I was disappointed, but I kept it and stuck it on my CD shelf next to Nativity in Black and Eternal Masters. That was a few months ago--I just listened to it again while driving and I am much more impressed! This is a fun album when you are in the right mood and I don't mind the one techno track (Paranoid, Ultraviolence) and I really like the INTENSE black metal treatment given to "Who Are You?" by OLD and "The Wizard" by Scorn. Most of the other tracks are pretty straight forward Death Metal treatments, but Sabbath sounds good this way to my ears. Since I am a fan of the old/vintage Sabbath sound, I appreciate Brutal Truth's very heavy and straight forward kick ass take on "Lord of This World"--NICE AND HEAVY, and Cathedral does an awsome job of remaking Solitude very close to the original, which helps me appreciate the original song even more. Overall this is a cool album and I am now glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE tribute to the ULTIMATE band.......1999-08-30

I cannot believe the narrow minded reviews I have just read for this album, so I thought I better have my say. Yes, the songs are different to a straight up cover version. Get over it. Sabbath pioneered so many new and innovative sounds, why can't anyone else? I think it is the ultimate mark of respect that so many bands (Yes, even techno) were influenced so much, and here is how they show it. Look out for the Godflesh cover of 'Zero the Hero' (the only non-ozzy cover on the album), 'Who are you' by OLD and 'The Wizard' by Scorn. If you like a bit of extremity and dig the old Black Sabbath, put away Nativity in Black and listen to this.

3 out of 5 stars to much industrial.......1999-07-25

This is not an album for the average Sabbath fan. It is much more industrial and death metalish than most. Although Cathedrals Wheels of Confusion is a good cover. A really heavy version but still maintains integrity. Anal C**ts version of "killing yourself to live" might be one of the only songs i have ever listend to and not undrestood despite knowing all the lyrics.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good but.......2005-04-23

the Sleep cover is not recorded in stereo and shabby. The Brutal Truth cover of Lord Of This World is wicked, along with a fantastic Pitchshifter version of N.I.B.
For a heavier more true metal comp of Sabbath covers get either Nativity In Black CDs. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than the Corporate N.I.B. comp........2003-06-17

If you don't like Grind/Death metal then you won't like this but if you do then this is the album for you. The best thing about this album is the choice of some more obscure Sabbath tracks like
Zero The Hero and Lord Of This World.

3 out of 5 stars not so great.......2001-03-11

You are better of getting NIB or one of the other tributes
