Since their humble beginnings in 1977 the Dirty Dozen Brass band has championed the sound of lowdown horns from the streets of New Orleans to the entire world. The band's first, long overdue, multi-label anthology takes music from ten albums and stuffs it all onto one disc, resulting in 80 minutes of the most lively sounds you'll hear this side of Bourbon St. From spirituals ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee"), to R&B (Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues"), Crescent City classics (The Meters' "Cissy Strut"), Charlie Parker covers ("Bongo Beep") and groove-happy originals, the horn, percussion and later guitar augmented outfit keeps the funk flames fanned. Greasy and fluid sousaphone bass parts by mainstay Kirk Joseph kick up the second line dust, while the punchy five piece horn section blows with the intensity of a Crescent City hurricane, both in unison and taking solos that move from soul to jazz and back again. These fifteen songs only scratch the surface, as the band's remarkable collaborations with Dr. John and Elvis Costello are MIA. The compilers, instead, successfully chose tracks representative of the group's versatile jazz and roots approach. It's nearly impossible to play this album and stay seated, and who would want to? The compilation captures the heart of New Orleans' most passionate and well-known brass band that finds the funk regardless of which genre they decide to delve into. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

The first career-spanning collection from the quintessential N'awlins brass band!

For the past three decades, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band has taken the traditional brass band music of New Orleans, combined it with funk, jazz, gospel and soul, and introduced this special blend of the old and the new to the rest of the world. In the process, they've won the approval of not only fans and critics, but also the taste-making musicians they've collaborated with in the studio—Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews, Modest Mouse and others.

This Is The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Collection is the first compilation to include songs from every album they've released, including four tracks from out-of-print records.

4 out of 5 stars Brass Band.......2007-05-16

This was a gift and I've not heard it, but I know it arrived on time and in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars Funk Perfection.......2006-03-18

This was my first exposure to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to hear them. Their sound is a sort of perfectly realized funk: Fun tunes, energetic arrangements, and spirited solos. References to the rich musical traditions of New Orleans are ever present and give the music a richness and a sense of history, but this band always sounds fresh and alive. I'll bet their live performances are something special.

Since I wear my Ipod when I run and work out, I need snappy tunes that hold my interest - my current playlist uses more songs from this CD than any other in my collection - I think that's a good measure of the fun you will have with it!

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch overview of their finest moments.......2005-07-19

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band have jammed with more bands than almost anyone else. Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews, Dr. John, Elvis Costello, the Black Crowes, Modest Mouse, David Bowie are just a few. The thing is, many people may not be familiar with some of the Dirty Dozen's own albums, many of which are now out-of-print. This brand new collection includes tracks from the ten albums released during the Dirty Dozen's 27-year career. The album kicks off with the classic "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now" and doesn't slow down until the closing track "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from their Funeral For A Friend album. In between you'll find some of the most inspired and infectious grooves ever committed to disc.

Everybody digs New Orleans. Why not check out the best of the best New Orleans has to offer?

5 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction!.......2005-04-18

I've got a few albums by the Dozen, but when I saw this in my local record store, I bought it on impulse. I'm sure glad I did. There are a number of early tracks I'd never heard before, and the selection from more recent albums can't be faulted. If there's any one essential Dozen album (most of them come pretty darn close), it's this one. Get it without "fail"!

Of all the life-affirming music made in response to Hurricane Katrina, this is perhaps the most radical achievement--a recontextualizing of Marvin Gaye's early-'70s classic in the wake of the devastation of New Orleans. Joining the Crescent City's leading brass band are an array of guest singers who give the interplay a different dynamic from Gaye's silky sophistication. From the harder edge that Public Enemy's Chuck D gives the opening title track through the redemptive prophecy provided by Guru on the closing "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," the album takes the spirit of Gaye's social commentary and adds a contemporary twist. Among the other highlights, Bettye LaVette wrings every ounce of soul from "What's Happening Brother," Ivan Neville leads the call-and-response spirituality of "God Is Love," and the Dirty Dozen transform "Save the Children" into a symphony of syncopation and saxophones. Released to mark the first anniversary of the hurricane, with some proceeds benefitting relief efforts, the album deserves to have the staying power of Gaye's original. --Don McLeese

Album Description

On August 29, the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will release their reinterpretation of Marvin Gaye's classic LP What's Going On. Thirty-five years after its original release, the political and social themes of the album are just as relevant as ever. Along with many others along the Gulf Coast, the members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band lost their homes to Katrina. Their take on What's Going On is not only an attempt to express their feelings about this tragedy and other current events, but also a tribute to the spirit of their hometown of New Orleans.

Guest vocalists Chuck D, Ivan Neville, G. Love, Guru and Bettye LaVette contribute to album, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each copy of What's Going On will go to the Tipitina's Foundation, benefiting the music community of New Orleans.

4 out of 5 stars great tuba.......2007-06-08

Since my son plays the tuba a friend suggested this cd to me and I think it is wonderful. He makes the tuba sound like a guitar!! we love it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly "What's Going On"..........2006-12-01

Combining superlative musicianship, the inspiration of Marvin Gaye's original album, the immediacy of the new arrangements, contributions from legendary guest artists, and the enormity of the calamity (Hurricane Katrina) that inspired this undertaking, this is a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L recording!

And not just because of the good intentions.

Anyone who is in tune with Marvin's vibe ie anyone who's got S-O-U-L, will appreciate and enjoy the groove on this jam.

If I'm mixing metaphors, I apologize. Just a caucasian dude with a lifelong love of soul.

5 out of 5 stars A vital and heartfelt tribute to the people and city of New Orleans.......2006-08-30

Anyone who loves New Orleans music was devastated by the disaster wrought by Katrina last year. Despite the painfully slow recovery the city is making, there are glimmers of hope and reasons to rejoice. This album is one of them.

The Dirty Dozen Brass take on Marvin Gaye's classic LP and do it up N'awlins style. At the same time, they make the point that the problems--war, poverty, ecological disaster, drug abuse, racism--that Gaye sang about 30 years ago are still prevalent. However, this album is anything but a downer. Like the New Orleans tradition of the funeral march, in which the band plays a dirge on the way out to the cemetary and party music on the way back, the Dozen give us a reason to dance all over our troubles, as Pete Townshend once put it. Get this album today (proceeds benefit NOLA musicians) and start dancing.

Since 1977, the Dirty Dozen has extended the New Orleans brass band tradition, adding a funk rhythm section and recording with alt-rockers from Elvis Costello to Modest Mouse. But the band has deep roots, and they've never been more apparent than on Funeral for a Friend, a performance that goes to the very core of jazz and New Orleans musical life. Dedicated to one of the band's founders, the late Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen, it's a jazz funeral with hymns played at stately dirge tempo en route to the cemetery, then pressed to festive up-tempo counterpoint on the return. The music here pulses with life--and with afterlife too--as the raw R&B force of tenor saxophonist Kevin Harris and baritone saxophonist Roger Lewis energizes traditional tunes like "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and Blind Willie Johnson's "John the Revelator." On "I Shall Not Be Moved" and "Jesus on the Mainline," the band pushes outward to hypnotic, dense, incantatory jams. Funeral for a Friend is a summary of the Dirty Dozen's greatest strengths, a memorable CD filled with joy and sorrow and real emotional power. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sound Of Spirits Leaving And Arriving.......2006-11-26

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is more than yet another terrific group; because of all they've done to preserve true NOLA jazz, while infusing it with modern influences, they're also an important group. Funeral For A Friend finds them in the middle of their comfort zone and the result is a splendid and soul-satisfying CD. At 40:14 it's a wee bit skinny for the price, but the quality more than compensates.

The jazz funeral is one of many things NOLA got right. Family and friends march towards the cemetery, accompanied by a dignified, solemn brass dirge. Famously, the walk back home morphs into a strut as grief departs and makes way for jubilation. This is not a frivolous, ad hoc party, this party is crucial. Participants celebrate the life of the departed, his or her passage to a better place, and their own suddenly more precious lives.

The DDBB could have faked this music any time, it's familiar ground, but this CD is a tribute to one of its own, Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen. You can hear the authenticity in every note, the mourning, the delight, and even a supernatural presence - chilling. The liner notes advise listeners to "Play It Loud," and it's a good idea, the nature of the moment calls for complete immersion.

Just A Closer Walk With Thee gives you the whole dynamic - lament and foot stomp. I Shall Not Be Moved gets a rousing, hallelujah treatment tough enough to set the gators dancing while Please Let Me Stay A Little Longer, (a standout), blends guitar and accordion with baritone sax into a very jumpy jambalaya. What A Friend We Have In Jesus showcases the slow march; pretty, sad, reverential. Jesus On The Mainline - with choir - is a rabble-rouser, real revival stuff, and it's got a second act that is downright rapturous - amazing!

John The Revelator, (another standout), is slinky and infectious; skeletons might enjoy dancing to this one. The four remaining tracks are all hymns, alternating between furious and melancholy. It's a long emotional ride in a short amount of time. The closer, Amazing Grace, (1:00), is played straight, and wraps this masterpiece with a bow. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars What I want at my Funeral.......2006-01-20

I enjoyed this Cd tremendously
i would have preferred the songs were set up like a true New Orleans Jazz Funeral, with the dirges first then the happy up beat songs. But, as it is, it is a recomended CD.

5 out of 5 stars unique.......2006-01-09

I've ordered several New Orleans-based music CDs since Katrina and this is my favorite so far. For me, it captures alot of the spirit of the place. I'm not a gospel music fan. But even if you think you don't like gospel music, you can't help but like this--brass and drum with a splash of dixieland and blues, a little accordian. It was an uplifting treat to my ears and heart, despite the title, and reminded me again why New Orleans is a special place for nurturing musicians and expanding music appreciation.

5 out of 5 stars Street Church.......2005-10-12

As a minister, I enjoy worshiping the God of all creation with music; good music. What I enjoy most about the way the Dirty Dozen Brass Band gang play these old hymns is their laid back-n-loose musical interpretation. No pomp-n-circumstance here.
This is street church all the way.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but disappointing.......2005-10-11

I originally heard this group on a Garrison Keillor Prarie Home Companion radio broadcast soon after the tragic events in New Orleans last August. I enjoyed the music immensely and sought out recordings for my own benefit as a Christian and to indirectly help support our stricken brethren. I'm still glad I did, but the CD was not as satisfying as I had envisioned. While listening to this recording I soon realized that this group is highly improptu and serrendipitous and probably a real challenge to record. With all due respect, the majority of the music on this CD is very brash. One particular vocal piece is over sung and difficult to appreciate. Probably this is all due to a deficiency in my perspective, I'm sorry. The result is that I share this CD, which is good, but don't care if I get it back, which is bad. So, be careful.

Having dropped the "Brass Band" part of their moniker for their disappointing Ears to the Wall in 1996, the Dirty Dozen return to their former, fuller-named persona for Buck Jump. And it's a relief. The band is in full bloom from the opening, funk-fueled track, even if the old snare-bass drum marching format gives way to a more standard drum kit for much of the session. With production from John Medeski (he of the vaunted groove outfit Medeski Martin & Wood), the DDBB steps up to blow on a wild array of songs, from "Run Joe," long an item for Louis Jordan, to a feverish read of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." There's a great balance struck throughout the CD between the old school march-rhythm rave-ups and their more complex compositions that began coming to the fore on the excellent Open Up! Medeski has the whole party right in your face, too, from virtually the first seconds, when the horns blow brightly and never back off. --Andrew Bartlett

I know this band has done other albums before this. No doubt John Medeski on the organ and in the production booth helped these fellas out. This album will get your head noddin and is good for a road trip. I've seen them live in Burlington at Higher Ground and they were fabulous. I would recommend this to anybody who likes to groove. Also, the live album they did with Widespread Panic is no slouch.

4 out of 5 stars Featuring Dr. John.......2005-10-14

I had this album on tape and now I have it on CD. It has a nice version of "It's All Over Now" with Dr. John on vocals. This is a song the Stones covered back in the '60s. It was written by Bobby Womack. I have seen the Dirty Dozen in concert too. This is the album that best represents the group, I think.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THESE GUYS!.......2005-09-30

The best album from one of the best bands in my best collection.
Dr. John sits in on an over-the-top "It's All Over Now", and "Voodoo" redefines New Orleans' version of funk. A great, fun album for parties and road trips.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars........2007-03-24

sure it's cathartic to get all melancholy with sad songs, or to purge your blues with existential wailings, but how about having some fun? you need fun music in your life. you really do. and here some is. the dirty dozen brass band make music about as fun as it comes. funky beats, wailing saxophone, bouncy tuba patterns, and so much more: all adding up to a stew of pure soulfullness and joy. i get a great adrenalin rush from this stuff. can't get enough. this album even has a vocal appearance by elvis costello (on "that's how you got killed before") that is most welcome. "buck jump" is my favorite dirty dozen brass band album, but this one is a close second. get 'em both. play 'em one after the other. life will immediately feel better.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic New Orleans Jazz.......2001-01-09

The Dirty Dozen Brass band is keeping the New Orleans Jazz tradition alive and well--a cab driver in the Big Easy told me, "We're proud of those homeboys!" And justly so, as they play with non-stop excitement and obvious joy. The New Orleans Album may well be my favorite of theirs to date--with 10 infectious cuts, (um, perhaps that isn't the best word for a CD track in this particular sentence!)--all top notch! Worthy of particular notice is tubist Kirk Joseph, whose incredible energy undergirds the whole CD--this guy never seems to stop to breathe! Lead trumpeter Gregory Davis' tune Hannibal is my favorite, with an absolutely fabulous ending fading off into the distance in an almost spiritual way. The Monkey Speaks His Mind and Don't You Feel My Leg are hilarious. Elvis Costello makes a guest appearance and does a fine job, but personally I prefer the real thing. The "new" swing bands like Squirrel Nut Zippers and Cherry Popping Daddies are fine, and I'm glad to see and hear a revival of that music, but nothing beats the Dirty Dozen. Get this album--if you don't enjoy it, your soul is dead.

4 out of 5 stars TEEL'S A REAL HALFA.......2000-08-10

whata halfa!.... i mean the kid is a real talented flamer!....the way he jukes and jammies and flaunts the goods... woof, him and the rest of the dozen really got me thinking.. has the whole world gone halfa....hearn's struggling brain mass

5 out of 5 stars buzz forever in your brain.......2000-02-22

There are so many good, hooking songs on this CD it's impossible to mention them all. I first heard these songs ten years ago and they're still with me, despite the many times I've lost the CD (and bought new ones).

"Don't You Feel My Leg" is one of the most original American songs I've ever heard, and the musicianship is just awesome. I hear this song and am transported back in time -- and to New Orleans mind you...

Elvis Costello's cameo song is also great: "That's How You Got Killed Before" hasn't been covered by any of the new Swing bands, but it should be a standard for once and all.

There's not one bad song on the CD. And so many of the songs have a strong sense of humor so if you're listening to the lyrics more than the horns you'll get a kick there -- but then, the horns are what this thing is all about: one of my favorite mental soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars A cornerstone in brass-band funk.......1999-07-22

I first got this album in 1992. I was immediately hooked. This album is a cornerstone of music that the dirty dozen brass band have helped bring back to the spotlight. One of my all time favorites.

Since their birth in 1977, the pioneering Dirty Dozen Brass Band has extended the New Orleans Second Line tradition into rock, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Led by trumpeter-vocalist Gregory Davis, the nonet is joined by several cutting-edge guest artists. Dr. John lends his Crescent City piano chords and deep-south vocals on "Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky" and the festive "Big Chief." The gravel-voiced John Bell, of Georgia-based jam band Widespread Panic, chimes in on the hip-shaking "Walk on Gilded Splinters." Robert Randolph's ghostly steel pedal guitar casts its spell on Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is," and the young diva Norah Jones's tender Texas twang graces the ballad "Ruler of My Heart." DJ Logic's turntable scratches provide the gumbo on the autobiographical "We Got Robbed," and the Mississippi-born blues bard Olu Dara adds his Delta-derived voice to "Junko Partner." Throughout the CD, the DDBB brings Big Easy grooves into the 21st century. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Never fail to please...........2003-02-07

Once again the mighty horn totin' denizens of the Crescent City bring forth another fine effort. Beyond their always soulful playing, their "back to basics" recording and their clever and idiomatic arrangements, this outing pairs the Band with several distinguished guest artists. Particular stand-outs include Norah Jones, D.J. Logic and the always welcome voice of Dr. John. The cut with Olu Dara (Junko Partner), has a "big four" beat that is so relaxed it sounds like it happened yesterday and of course, the Band rolls right along in the pocket. This really is a great listen....keep up the great work fellas....

4 out of 5 stars Funked Up.......2002-11-22

On the occasion of their 25th Anniversary, this New Orleans institution has released an absotively bonaroo CD, if you know what we mean (or if we do). Although the personnel have changed a wee bit over the years, this largely in tact band of premier musicians continues t provide some of the most buoyant, joyous, dynamic music to be found anywhere. Included here are classic-sounding originals written by members of the band and just plain classics of such Nawlins legends as Allen Toussaint, The Meters, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and Aaron Neville and Irma Thomas. Produced by Craig Street, whose name seems to pop up on a significant number of our favorite albums, this CD employs an eclectic and imaginative assemblage of guest artists. Included are Dr. John himself, roots/jazz vocalist Olu Dara, turntablist DJ Logic, the incredible Robert Randolph who coaxes the most distinctive and unusual sounds out of a pedal steel guitar, and, just when we were beginning to go through a Norah jones, she provides a fix with a stunning rendition of a Nawlins standard. If there is a more thoroughly funked-up album out there right now, we'd like to know about it.

5 out of 5 stars from Happeningsville.......2002-08-09

This is great second line music with the sizzlin' shufflin'
parade beats and the funk. Lots of staples from the Nola songbook. Solowise, the baritone sax is the
hottest. If you have a friend who plays baritone sax, don't wait, get this already.

Get on the good foot and party to this side!

5 out of 5 stars Good N.O. music.......2002-06-06

This is not far from be as good as Dr John and Meters records from early 70.

Good sound, great "second line" music and that means great good old New Orleans funk music. A real party record... a REAL great party record :-)

4 out of 5 stars Very, Very Good.......2002-05-24

Let me start by saying that I love the DDBB. They are true pioneers who, 25 years later, are delivering music that is as good (probably better) than when they started. Highlighted by virtuoso performances and amazing arrangements, they define "old school" for me. Other bands should (and obviously do) listen to and emulate them, but there can be only one DDBB.

The first time I listened to Medicated Magic, I was a little disappointed, as I was hoping for an album as outstanding as their last one, Buck Jump (one of the baddest, funkiest, old-school-showin'-em-how-its-done albums EVER). But as I listen to this CD more, it has definitely grown on me. Especially good are the opener "Ain't Nothin But a Party"; their cover of the Meters' "Cissy Strut"; "Ruler of My Heart" with Norah Jones (now I see what the fuss is about!); and "Big Chief" with Dr John. It's great to see DDBB giving props to the music of New Orleans, much like they did on the New Orleans album (which I also recommend).

My only (minor) complaints are that "Walk on Guilded Splinters" with John Bell of Widespread Panic does not kick quite as much as the live version they did on WP's recent live album (although its very good), and the duet with Dr John on "Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky" does not have as much bite as it should. But overall, a very, very good album. (P.S. check out their live DVD - unbelievable!!!)

5 out of 5 stars I never get sick of listening to this.......2006-04-17

This live recording captures the energy and spirit of the classic New Orleans sound. Also, the playing is tight and the tunes are great!

The only quibble I would have is that the recording is a little on the quiet side - you've really got to crank the stereo to get the full effect. Otherwise, a great one to get.
