sucky suckness from sucky land.......2007-01-15
blue murders debut album,in all of it splendor and glory. i had to buy this for a friend, who loves them. he sucks, too.
I should sue the good reviews.......2006-11-09
What are these reviewers listening to????? If you're age is more than single diget, there can be no reason for a positive review. This is so bad, that I could hardly force myself to listen to the whole cd at least once. I loved SYKES work with THIN LIZZY and was expecting something pretty good. This sets a new benchmark for innane lyrics and rotten recycled riffs. THIS IS COMPLETELY MINDLESS DRIVEL!!!! And those are the better points. I would guess that MARCEL MARCEAU was the sound engineer and that the production was handled by OZZY in a very wasted state. If there is a good guitar solos on this one, it is completely lost in the horrid mix. I am just glad that they achieved the success they so richly deserve - total unnonimity. If your familie name isn't SYKES, than there is absolutely no reason to waste money on this shocker.
amazing.......2006-08-28
Anybody that would give this cd less than 4 stars doesn`t have a clue about john sykes genuis. His tone his playing unreal sykes at his best. he still kept writing great songs but playing was never as sick as this.
Blue Murder - Blue Murder.......2006-06-29
John Sykes, Tony Franklin, and Carmine Appice are all world class musicians.
A fading memory.......2006-06-23
Blue Murder were John Sykes (vox/G), Tony Franklin + Carmine Appice and were, in essence, a project put together to take advantage of the short term high profile Sykes had after his association with David Coverdales Whitesnake. Backed by the seemingly unstoppable (at the time) Geffen, produced by Bob Rock and with John Kalodner lurking around this album had just about everything going fot it. Yet it utterly failed to ignite and the reasons may well include;
* A annoying treble heavy mix that's distracting to the listener on an average stereo and downright painful via headphones.
* Overly long songs. They wouldn't of fired if they were four minutes long so why drag them out for six minutes?
But it's not all bad. John Sykes sings well enough in an over extended way. And the players are skilled and worthy plus Valley of the Kings is lumbering - but in this instance in a good way.
2.5 stars on a good day. But these guys have all played on better albums.

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:
Must be heard to be believed.......2006-04-09
Even the brilliant Judy Kaye in the recent play "Souvenir" about Ms. Jenkins couldn't quite match the unique sound of this singer, although she came close. For those who like this sort of thing, this is the real thing. The sound on this Naxos CD is superior to RCA's "Glory of the Human Voice??" which covers most of the same territory. The Naxos CD also restores the piano intro to the Bell Song and the heretofore rare Valse Caressante of which only a few pressings are known to exist.
That said, the rest of the (non-Florence) cuts are mostly forgettable. More kitch than camp. Annoying music abounds but the in the realm of the truly, stupendously awful Florence Foster Jenkins remains in a class by herself. No one can really compete with Ms. Jenkins on her own camp grounds and there is no sense in trying. The one exception being the sung "Blue Danube" with Josephine Tumminia and the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra which falls in the "what could they have been thinking?" department.
Personally a little of this sort of thing goes a long way. The Faust Travesty on the RCA set holds a bit more interest (but not all that much). I think a more interesting compliation would consist of "straight" renderings of the various arias and pieces contrasted with Madame Florence's so the listener may fully savor what she achieves in these performances.
Florence gets five stars but the rest of it gets a minus one, so it ends up with four.
This is the definitive FFJ!.......2005-01-09
A fellow reviewer has not paid close attention to the contents of "Murder On The High C's": this release actually contains every recording that FFJ made. She recorded 9 arias and released them on 5 78's (the fifth, "Valse Caressante", was split), all of them gathered here for the first time. What this album omits from the previous cd release ("The Glory??? of the Human Voice") is the arias by an almost equally incompetent baritone. "Murder..." more than compensates for this with the inclusion of some unbelievably tragic recordings by artists who could actually sing but found themselves saddled with shockingly bad material; it's an absolute feast for those who love outsider music. The 'nursery rhyme' songs provoke bewilderment, the swing version of "Blue Danube" must be heard to be believed, and the excellent liner notes accurately describe Lauritz Melchior's valiant performance of "Please Don't Say No" as "the single worst recording of anything ever made by an opera star who should have known better". "Murder On The High C's" is an insanely delirious treasure.
Sounds Like A Vacuum Cleaner Ingesting An Owl.......2004-10-15
Florence Foster Jenkins was a socialite who enjoyed singing in vast disproportion to her musical talent. This CD has some of her greatest works (so to speak) although the disc pales in comparison to her masterwork "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." (In fact several of the songs on this CD are available on that recording.) Particularly ear-shattering are "Musical Snuff Box" (watch out for that last note if you have pets, they will seriously dislike it), "Bell Song" which is essentially a series of a cappella pentatonic scales by and large, and finally the unique rendition of "Valse Caressante" (which was actually released as a single!) which will leave any listener in a near delirium.
In short, these rare Jenkins masterworks are amazing and hilarious. I can't recommend them highly enough to anyone even mildly curious about outsider music. Why the three star rating? It is certainly not due to Florence's participation, rather due to the packaging. The cover boasts "Florence Foster Jenkins and Friends." Little will most people suspect that the "friends" make up about half of the CD, and are totally unrelated to Jenkins except for possessing no musical talent. Some of the songs are merely boring (like the Jimmy Durante selections), and some are quite laughably funny like the dreadful "The Fireman's Bride," and "Please Don't Say No." Finally there is the real puzzler from the "what were they thinking?" file, "Little Jack Horner," an operatic retelling of the classic children's tale. The other reason I only give this disc three stars is because four of the nine Jenkins' songs are available on "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." I had expected different material on this CD.
The bottom line is that this CD is for Florence Foster Jenkins completists. (Ponder that.) People who want more exposure to Florence should buy her delightful "The Glory (????) of Human Voice," which I can't recommend highly enough.
comedy classic.......2004-05-27
In the summer of 2003, I had the luck of hearing Florence's recordings. Even though no one is quite sure whether she meant to be funny or not, listening to her cds always puts me in the best mood. Hearing her try to reach those high notes and missing terribly is the funniest thing in the world!! My family and I love Florence!!!
The "joke", never funny, is now painfully shabby.......2004-03-07
It is sad that a person who apparently had too much money and time to waste could have done so in preserving for an unsuspecting posterity such awful sounds. The so-called friends who flocked by invitation to her concert to relish an event of mockery were at least as much to blame as the poor woman herself for having encouraged such eccentric egocentricity.
The whole matter stinks of making fun of a person afflicted by illness. What a cruel species we were - and still are.

John Sykes - buy it!.......2006-02-27
Another masterpiece by Sykes. Just buy this CD and listen to the awesome guitars, vocals, and songwriting of John Sykes. He is one of the greatest of all time. Lock yourself into the monster groove of "Cry for love"!! Listen to another huge Sykes signature riff on "I'm on fire"!! You will never stop listening to this stuff. Did I mention blistering super-speed solos?!!
Overcooked, but good for fans of John Sykes.......2005-02-16
The second Blue Murder album is a bit of a catch-all in that it features tracks with the original trio, with the Marco Mendoza version of the group, and even one with (temporary) lead singer Kelly Keeling. For metal fans, there's a bunch of excellent material here, but I can't help but feel that it all suffers in comparison to the fantastic first album. The album is 1-2 songs too long, and it was released too late to catch any of the heat from the semi-success of the first CD. Nonetheless, the playing is great, and the 2nd version of the group is at least a good stand-in for the first, with Mendoza proving himself especially able. Sykes has some better lyrics on this album and shows himself maturing as a songwriter.
fantastic listening.......2004-06-30
John Sykes is a very talented musician, this album is a work of art, very inspirational, highly recommended listening, this album has some of the finest guitar work ever, can't say enough about his vocals, due yourself a favor BUY THIS!!!!!

Beautifully Made, not the best selections.......2002-04-27
The theme music from Morse was my reason for buying this CD, and I was not disappointed. The CD gives the viewer the opening theme and the slightly longer closing theme (2:10 and 2:32, respectively).
I wasn't overly impressed with the other musical selections on the CD. They certainly are representative of music from the Morse television series, but the pieces selected didn't show a wide variety. And the original music composed specifically for the series never reaches the same level as the Morse Theme.
But the CD quality is excellent, and Morse fans who collect the music from the series won't be disappointed. This CD delivers what it promises.
great stuff.......2002-01-16
this cd is worth buying just for the morse theme tune.
This cd evokes the show and Morse, himself........2000-10-10
I have been playing this cd, in repeat mode, for up to 6 hours a day at my office for many months. The music on this volume is more varied than on volume 2. It is the variety of classical music and the haunting and evocative theme that make this cd so extraordinary. This is the only cd I ever play that contains opera. Needless to say I yearn for more Morse shows, but in their absence I can make do with this cd.
Wonderful, relaxing, evocative soundtrack.......1999-05-04
We are in the process of ordering this CD plus Volumes 2 and 3 (which we have not yet heard). We had earlier purchased Cadfael -- another British TV series soundtrack, and this reminds us of that one. Very different style of music, but absolutely wonderful and uplifting to listen to.

Girlschool - 'Screaming Blue Murder' (Castle Music) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-05-05
Originally released in 1982,as 'Screaming...' was the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal's(only?)all-female band's third record.Very nice job on the CD reissue.I wondered as to WHY I've never seen this title in stores before, apparently this is it's first pressing on compact disc. You get the album's original ten rockers, like "Live With Me",the ass-kickin' "Don't Call It Love","Hellrazor" and "Flesh&Blood" plus eleven(11)bonus tracks tagged on from a 1982 BBC Radio One In Concert shindig.I mean, come on!Who could possibly resist?A must-have.
Three Times Running..........2004-12-25
This is the last of the "classic" first three Girlschool titles. It's the FIRST time it's ever been available on CD.
Although not quite as good as the two records that preceded it, "Screaming Blue Murder" is still a fantastic entry in the Girlschool canon. This version contains Nigel Gray's orginal mix, as opposed to Chris Tsangarides remix done on the old U.S. release (on vinyl in 1982.) That gives this version a much rawer vibe and brings it much closer in feel to the punkish first two intstallments of their discography.
All the same elements are there, catchy, driving, punk/rock/metal delivered with lots o' balls. A bit of filler creeps in, but I swear if "Turns Your Head" around were to pop up in a movie soundtrack, Girlschool would be back on everybody's radar.
Excellent. Even with the filler, still better than ANYTHING any of the current crop of "all female rock bands" has to offer.

Wild and Crazy!.......2001-07-04
These guys are Wild, we need more of good times like this in todays music! Good old fashion fun and nobody gets hurt, well, maybe Hitler. Just a good time CD, enjoyed it a lot!
A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19
This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

Martin Carthy, along with various members of the Watersons and the Scottish folk group Swan Arcade, formed Blue Murder to play a one-off benefit concert for a local school in 1986. And that, they thought, was that. But their a cappella renditions of traditional songs and hymns were such a hit that the band became something of a fixture at various folk festivals over the years. No One Stands Alone is Blue Murder's belated debut recording, and it perfectly captures the good-natured spontaneity of the band's performances. The membership of the group has always been fluid, and this version includes Martin Carthy, his daughter Eliza Carthy, Norma Waterson and her brother Mike, and the trio Barry Coope, Jim Boyes, and Lester Simpson. The tracks include hymns like "Stars in My Crown," which the group belts out with an open-throated gusto that recalls Sacred Harp singing, old ballads like "Gown of Green," and songs composed by various band members. Martin Carthy supplies very understated guitar accompaniment occasionally, but for the most part the performances are a cappella. The members of Blue Murder obviously get a kick out of singing together and their joy shines through on every song. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Great British folk music.......2002-10-29
With a lineup that includes the superb guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson, along with their daughter Eliza Carthy (one of the up-and-coming stars of the Brit-Folk scene...) this disc promises great things... and it delivers! Fans of Eliza and the Watersons will definitely want to check this new album out.
Simply stunning.......2002-06-28
If harmony singing is your passion, stop, do not pass Go, and buy this CD. Now. This is spine-tingling stuff, rich, lustrous and energetic from the opening notes of "No One Stands Alone" to the last chorus of "The Goodnight Song." I haven't stopped playing it since it arrived yesterday. The impeccable Carthy-Waterson clan combine forces with one of Britain's most acclaimed a cappella groups, Coope Boyes Simpson. The result is always satisfying and at its best, explosively powerful. A blend of traditional, contemporary and gospel, it defies categorization. On my favorite cuts, voices weave in and out in harmonious counterpoint. Even one of my least favorites, "Blue Mountain," is worth the price alone to hear Norma Waterson singing "I was born and raised in Texas..." in a Yorkshire accent. The liner notes make it clear that the participants had a lot of fun singing together, and it really shows. This is one of the most exciting recordings I've heard in a long, long time. My only quibble, and it's a minute one, is that I'd have liked more information on the selections.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17
I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.
I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.
An interesting mix..........2002-05-18
This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.
While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...
A touch of history...........2002-01-28
An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****
