4 out of 5 stars Great Classic Rock.......2007-04-11

This collection of BOC'S hits are mind blowing. Great Classic Rock cd, that you can listen to over and over again. I love the song Don't Fear the Reaper and my main favorite is track four on the cd.

5 out of 5 stars I had forgotten how good it was.......2007-01-09

This is really something to remember the old rock'n roll times by.

4 out of 5 stars Workshop of the Telescopes Is Better.......2007-01-09

Blue Oyster Cult is a group that nearly has no genre. Much of their early music, only a little of which appears in this compilation, is hard rock with flashes of progressive rock. Most startling are their lyrics, sometimes almost comedic, typically creatively bizarre, and just as frequently so eclectic as to be incomprehensible.

With the success of "Agents of Fortune" Blue Oyster Cult's music changed to a milder rock style, and in some cases, pop. The titles often remain bizarre, such as "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," and the lyrics also remain challenging and unusual, but the music itself is softer.

Consider, for example, "Goin' Through the Motions." This music sounds like something Foreigner might have created rather than the group that created "Harvester of Eyes" and "Flaming Telepaths." Even mellower is "In Thee," which I consider the mellowest song in this collection. This song is romantically beautiful, and somewhat un-Cult.

While I've focused somewhat on the more uncharacteristic songs in this collection, I would be remiss if I did not point out one of the best songs in this collection, "Shooting Shark." This song, from 1983's "Revolution by Night," is somewhat a product of its time, featuring electronics and an early 80s sound, and yet, it contains that spark that has always been at the heart of BOC's best music.

Blue Oyster Cult was formed in 1967, and released an album as recently as 2001. While they were likely strongly influenced by a variety of groups, they have also influenced a variety of musical styles that range from current hard rock to nu-metal or thrash. The length of Blue Oyster Cult's career is barely touched in this sixteen song collection. An even better collection is the two disk compilation "Workshop of the Telescopes," which contains thirty two songs. Once you have listened to that phenomenal collection you may find that you want to purchase Blue Oyster Cult's original albums.

Now comes a question. For sound, buy this CD or "Workshop of the Telescopes"? If you have a high end system and you can readily tell the difference between a remastered CD and the original, and you prefer remastered, then do buy this one. On the other hand, if you have an el cheapo stereo and you can only sometimes tell a remastered CD, then "Workshop of the Telescopes" is a better bet.

Blue Oyster Cult has an array of enjoyable music and this CD gives you a very small sample of that music. If you are unable to find "Workshop of the Telescopes" or you just want a very small flavor of Blue Oyster Cult, then buy this CD. Otherwise, pass this one by for the better options.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away From All BOC Compilations.......2006-12-10

The problem with any BOC package is they try to combine music from a band the was the coolest group between 1971-74, and a commercial group that produced some of the lamest music I've ever heard. This package only includes 4 songs from their legendary first 3 albums, 11 cuts from their commercial period. If your new to BOC, your have to understand, earlier in their career, they were as good as a hard rock act as there was. They combined top flight muscianship, with cleverly crafted melodies and riffs. The comparasons to Sabbath are only partially accurate in describing their style, because BOC played a more dynamic and colorful range of tunes. In fact, musically, I'd say they had more in common with Deep Purple, particulary in the guitar department. Buck Dharma was simply the most under rated guitar player....ever. Clapton was God, Hendrix was flamboyant, Page was a genius, Blackmore was tempermental, Johnny Winter was an albino, Leslie West was fat, and Buck Dharma, well he just looked like a working-class stiff, but man could that man jam! The rhythm section was propulsive, they played organ when appropriate, and all of the songs had hooks. They were rare then, and they'd be rare today, a hard rock outfit with strong pop sensibilities. So much so, you have to wonder if Eric Bloom and Jeff Lynne aren't the same person? At any rate BOC perfected their attack on Secret Treaties, and rapidly lost their commitment to rock n' roll during Agents fo Fortunes and all albums there after. The other Best of... package to avoid is Workshop of Telescopes. Eventhough it has a better song selection, the songs haven't been remastered and many of the versions are from poorly recorded live and promo albums. Instead of going for a compilation, I strongly recommend purchasing any one of the recently remastered first 3 albums, which sound dramatically better than the originals.

4 out of 5 stars Missing Key Songs..........2006-12-02

Another BOC compilation (aahk!!). Again, missing key songs. This is likely their best compilation because it's remastered, but it's appauling that it's missing some really key songs. I don't know about you, but I always thought these songs would have to be on a BOC best of: "Hot Rails to Hell", "Moon Crazy", "Perfect Water", "Dancin' in the Ruins" and "The Golden Age of Leather". There could be more songs, too. I think it's time that BOC just puts out a mega box set of remastered tunes like Kiss and Judas Priest have.

3 out of 5 stars Uh....this comment is for the band, not just the CD.......2007-01-02

I agree with a lot of these people that these guys create some pretty unique music. I own all the C.D.'s and i like how diverse they all are, and I especially love the keyboards. But..... theres a few big thing that i don't like in this band. First the drums really aren't that awe inspiring. The drummer fits it with the music, but i like the insane drumming in bands, and if I were to compare it to other bands i would say that it is not that complicated. Second, I hate the lyrics, I grow tired of hearing Fu*k all the time, and you can understand Fu*k fairly easily in Alexi's vocals. This leads to the third big thing i dislike with this band, although it was somewhat rectified in "Are you dead yet" is that the vocals sound stupid half the time. But that is just suppose to fit with the corny horror sound of the music, and as a few have called it said that it is cheesy... Also, since COB tried to create an almost corny sound of horror (hopefully) when the vocals follow that trend it just sounded silly and stupid. I can't help but laugh. Its all fun i guess, but thats not the kind of fun i like (although i did laugh...) But the worst part of this band, and the only thing that really puts me off on listening to them is the guitars squeek non-stop, and it gets extremely annoying. Some people like it i guess, but i hate hearing that crap all the time, especially in the cool shredding parts. Come on now, i want to hear some insane shredding, not some stupid squeeking that just hurts my ears and to wich most guitarists can do.

Some commented that hearing the bass-guitar was awesome... but it was not anything special, the bassists just played a couple of notes like every other band has. Nothing rememberable...

I also completely agree with the person titled "A kids Review" (as i do most of the time anyway) that said you need to listen to each track individually and not the CD as a hole. Gotta give a few of these songs some time to get catchy and awesome, especially in this CD which I personally think is the best, simply because i gave it a lot of time. I think the best songs are Follow the Reaper, Hate Me!, Hellion, Taste of my Scythe (although this song copied Immortal Souls and is one example of the F word constantly), and Mask of Sanity.

This bands good, they got good guitar work, good vocals when the Alexi isn't trying to sound stupid, and the keyboards are amazing (and is the hole reason why i bought all of COB's CD's). But i just couldn't put up five or even four stars because the squeeking of the guitars ruined many things that sounded like it was going to be awesome, the constant use of the F word and boring drums.

I assume most of the people who read this don't care about the F word, drums, or the squeeking guitars, and if you don't, then i say get this and put a five star review up.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-10-28

I admit that I may have bought this album on a nostalgic impulse, but I'm glad I had it. Considering I'm someone who mainly listens to stuff like Radiohead, Yes, and Pink Floyd, you'd think the last album I'd buy is this. But whatever. Lately I've been checking out some "tr00" metal (like Opeth and In Flames, along with metal bands I looked into a while ago like Alice In Chains and Queensryche), and it's awesome. So far, this is the only COB album I own, but after listening to it, I'm looking forward than buying more of their albums. Anyway, enough of my rant, now onto the album.

COB's Follow The Reaper is full of awesome instrumental passages, ear-shredding vocals, and even audible bass! Wow! These guys are definately some of the most talented musicians out there; especially Alexi Laiho. He has great solos throughout the whole album. The title track opens up with a passage from something you'd hear in an Edgar Allen Poe tale: "Death be not proud, though some have called me mighty and dreadful, hard not so." Then Alexi, Alexander, Henkka, Janne and Jaska hit you with their instruments all at once. There's even a little bass solo in the beginning! During the chorus, there's some great keyboard effects by Janne. Then he and Alexi have solos with each other near the end. Janne is definitely the best keyboardist out there right now along with Jordan Rudess. The song is obviously about death, and in a very humorous way. At the end you hear someone say, "I was only 21 when I diead", which is a line from the Exorcist pt 3. Bodom After Midnight is an equally great song. I like the creepy guitar and keyboard effects that lead up to the lyrics. The chorus is also really catchy with "Bodom after midnight! Bodom after midnight YEAH!" It's another one of my favorites off the album. There's another mind-blowing guitar and keyboard dual solo near the last 2 minutes. It ends with guitars and keyboards that are almost reminescent of the theme music of the Exorcist. It just shows you how talented these guys are. Children of Decedence twist, grinds, and is yet another great track. The lyrics "C'mon mothaf**ka, gimme your best shot!" are funny yet empowering. The musicianship during the chorus is some of the fastest off the album. Once again, Alexi gives a great guitar solos that tears through you, and Janne also delivers some great keyboards. And you just have to love the chorus: "You really thought you'd see through what I am and what I need! We're children of rebellion, we'll fight, we'll bleed! Don't try to come to preach over us, over me! We're children of decadence, we're right, we're real! We will fight we'll be bleed! We'll fight we'll bleed! We'll fight we'll BLEED!" It's one of the longer songs off the album, being 5:34. Everytime I Die is slower and more melodic than the last 3 tracks, but just as heavy. The musicianship very creepy in the beginning, until Janne rips your face off with a keyboard solo. Then it slows back down with some creepy keyboard effects. A very exciting and standout track. Probably my 2nd favorite off the album. The song is about, well, dying continuously. Mask of Sanity is, in my opinion, not too much of a standout track, but still awesome and it's still more than enough to blow an Ashlee Simpson album out of the water any day!.. The keyboards in the beginning are great, and in my opinion, it has some great dual guitar solos by Alexi and Alexander. It's about going insane: "Piece of Mind you run away from me! So make me lose my mask of sanity!!!!" Taste of My Scythe has someone yelling "Rip and cut and mutilate the innocent, his friends, again, and again, and on, and ON!", which is also a line from the Exorcist pt 3, further showing the sense of humor the Children of Bodom have. However, it's probably my least favorite track off the album. Still a pretty cool song though. Hate Me is another one of my favorites. I think it's about letting go of all your concerns and worries. The chorus is also really catchy: "I don't give a f**k if ya hate me!" A very empowering track, and I think the moral of it is something everyone needs to learn! I.E. not worrying so much about what others think of you. There's, once again, some great guitar solos. Northern Comfort is a severely underrated track. I mean, listen to Jaska's drums! They shine on this track. The lyris make you feel like you're running from something: "Now running out to forever alone! Sweating and shivering, cold right to the bone!" It gets VERY heavy at the end. Kissing the Shadows is easily my favorite. It has the best solos and coolest lyrics on the entire album. Like Northern Comfort, the lyrics make you feel like you're running from something: "I'm running after you throughout the valleys of tormented shadows! Don't be afraid of me only kissing your shadows! You're so far away I can smell your scent when it carries your shadow! And if you truly want I'll cross the line I'll follow!!!!!" Like I said, it has the best solos on the entire album. Alexi and Janne have great dual guitar and keyboard solos at the end. Seriously, they're over a minute long! Everything here works beautifully. My only complaint is that it seems to have the least lyrics on the album, but even so, that complaint is very, very minor! Hellion starts off with sound effects that sound like someone opening a beer. From what I hear, the song is a cover. By what band I have no idea, but whatever. This song is without a doubt where Henkka shines the most. In the beginning is where he plays the bass best, but it's great throughout the whole song.

Is this COB's best? Well, I can't say for sure, because like I said, this is the only album I have by them so far. But I can tell you that it's an amazing album with fun and humorous lyrics and god-like musicianship. Follow The Reaper is, overall, a very addicting and infectious CD that you'll have difficulty not listening to over and over. So if you've been striving to find some fun, awesome metal that will rip your face off and never bore you, these guys are definately worth a look. All hail the Children of Bodom!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of musical skill. A contribution to our society.......2006-10-27

First of all I'd just like to say that Rebecca Lyle (the first reviewer on the page) is a freaken idiot and doesn't know anything about music or Children Of Bodom. Plus she's a bad journalist. "Alexi is good. Janne is also good. The drumms and bass are good as well." nice adjectives and transitions. Sorry for the tirade but she kinda made me mad. I've been listening to Children Of Bodom since I was 11 years old. I would consider this, and all of Children Of Bodom's albums to be masterpieces. For musicans and guitarists this album is enough to make you ceam your pants. Alexi's phrasing and choices of notes are perfect, particualarly in Follow the Reaper and Hate Crew Death Roll. After i started playing guitar and learned a fare amount about music, I became obssessed and amazed because of alexi use of unconventional musical techniques and scales. Often his phrasing strays away from what would make sense in terms of conventional music and scaling. these variations can be explained by chromatic scaling and key changes. When reading the tab you find yourself saying "wait, can he do that." And the answer is most definately yes. Children of Bododm is a perfect example of what can happen from bending the rules of music and getting out the major scale rutt. This band definately encourages me to think out side of the musical box.

P.S For en example, listen to Bed Of Razors and the small transistion lick after the intro just before the first verse begins. That lick techniquely doesnt make a lot of sense musically. Its almost one of those chromatic techniques you'd see in jazz, But none the less sounds great

5 out of 5 stars A musical journey.......2006-10-10

This album by Children of bodom, is a musical masterpiece. The only problem with a lot of power metal or melodic death metal bands are that, if you don't pay attention to their individual songs, it'll all become one big jumble of noise that you won't like. So the first time i listened to this album, tracks 4,5,6 and 7 were jumbled and i didn't like it at all. But after a few more listens I realized the greatness of this album. The disk starts off pretty well with the title track. The perfect example of children of bodom. Then Bodom after Midnight, and Children of decadence pretty much follow the same pattern. In fact all the songs do. Their are no ballads and if you think Children of Bodom is going to take it easy on your heart, then youre dead wrong. The brutality of their music still hurts me to this day. My Fav. tracks on this album is the title track, Bodom After Midnight, Children of decadence, Everytime i die, Hate Me, Kissing the shadows, and Hellion. Highly recommended

2 out of 5 stars Hallo-wha?.......2006-04-19

Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06

I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).

2 out of 5 stars Could have been great but . . ........2004-10-15

As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.

If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.

4 out of 5 stars It's not That bad..........2004-06-14

It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!

A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.

There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.

3 out of 5 stars Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02

One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.

This CD covers all these aspects of Halloween, which virtually garantees that no one will like every song. However, I would suggest that you pick and choose the tracks you like from the CD, as part of your overall Halloween soundtrack. You will probably find at least several tracks you like. And of you like Mannheim Steamroller, you will like most of them.

I loved this movie, and I love the soundtrack too. It's beautiful. We listen to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but definitely needs "Dream On".......2005-08-24

I am no expert on music; however, I believe that this soundtrack was a good one. I can listen to all 7 songs, I agree with the rest of you that there should be an 8th in the form of Aerosmith's "Dream On." I absolutely love this movie and the music to it. If you love the movie then you need to have this soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars It's Missing Dream On????!!! .......2005-08-23

I was all set to get the CD until I heard it and found out there was no "Dream On." What???!!! How could they? The best song in the movie, the one they used for the trailers and TV spots and in the credits, and they don't have it? That was the only reason I wanted the CD. Even though I like "Don't Fear the Reaper" by the BLue Oyster Cult. But I don't understand how they could not add "Dream On".

Even so, I still love the movie. Thank God I have the DVD to listen to "Dream On" in the credits all I want.

3 out of 5 stars Spectacular movie, but the soundtrack is somewhat bland..........2005-08-02

I was disappointed that this CD did not include the theme music played when the US tied Sweden (two staccato eigth notes, quarter rest, two staccato eighth notes, quarter rest, etc.).

Nevertheless...

Three notes. Over and over. And over. Mark Isham has made a good attempt at composing varations on a theme which consists of just three notes. During the earlier parts of the movie it works, as we are being introduced to the characters and the journey they're following. Isham was fantastic with the music he wrote for that ten minutes of tension and bedlam that occurred while the US was hanging on to their 4-3 lead.

But when time finally ran out and the game officially won, we hear those same. Three. Notes. And it lacked meat. It sounded like a small chamber orchestra. It was very disappointing. By the time the movie is over, we feel like those three notes have been beaten into our skull with a broken hockey stick. A worthy effort, but an unsuccessful one.

Also disappointing was the fact that the "Miracle" track on this CD was "summarized." All we hear is the music for the goal scored by Buzz Schneider, then a Soviet goal, then the buildup of the final 10 minutes, then the ending. Again, where was Mark Johnson's tying goal (the same theme as when the US tied Sweden)?

Still, it's a must-own for anyone who is insanely addicted to the movie like I am. It's just too bad they weren't able to get John Williams for the score.

1 out of 5 stars The Power is Missing.......2005-05-11

A great movie, with great music, and great script. Casting was superb.

I watch this with my 8 year old grandson who is empowered by its magic and miracle.

I just jumped on net to order soundtrack and found that Dream On is missing. What a tradegy to cheat the public of such a song that was the eternal identifier and the guts of the movie.

Somebody screwed up. Where are they working now?

Bill

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Kind of Generic.......2006-11-16

I've always had a fascination for Grim Reaper. The imagery and album art alone was enough to attract me to their third album. But more on that later.

This is a combination of their first two albums and I'll have to admit, their best two. The songs are okay with a few memorable tracks, but they are definitely cliché ridden and generic. Steve Grimmet's vocals are okay when he doesn't get into those long annoying high pitched wails. I can't say a thing about Nick Bowcott's guitar playing as it rocks. However, I kind of wish he would have done more jamming and solos.

I also have their third album and after listening to it several times, I could not remember a thing about it. At least I can remember a few songs off this CD!

Overall, this is not bad stuff, it just does not blow me away and will probably not blow most of you away either. Beavis and Butthead hated them but I like them well enough that I will not bury this CD and forget about it. It is a double dose of generic clichéd rock, but who cares? You could do a lot worse. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars See You In Hell My Friends.......2006-01-03

Grim Reaper are known for campy horror lyric, a singer who could scream so only Rob Halford's dog could hear, and repetitious lyrics. People complain about those qualities, but thats what makes them so great. This disc contains their first two albums, so its a bargain already. Now if you make those two albums a great blitz of heavy metal, that even better. Even though these song rock, they all have the same standout feature: the excellent guitar work of Nick Bowcott. Bowcott could shred like no one's business. Every song on here rocks. My personal favorites are "Wrath of the Ripper", "Fear No Evil", and the infamous "See You In Hell". I recommend this for any 80s metal fan, and especially fans of Judas Priest. If you like these albums, I suggest you pick up their third and last album, Rock You To Hell.

3 out of 5 stars A good bargaining..........2005-02-18

Well, for almost the price of one CD you can get the two best Grim Reaper albums (they recorded only three), and since "ROCK YOU TO HELL" is no big deal, you will possess everything tha matters from this band in a single CD. A good deal.

Although Grim Reaper has a muscular and visceral sound, and its guitarrist and founding member Nick Bowcott is a talented axe man, you can not be fooled by all the five stars reviews here. Nostalgy is a strong influence over people's tastes... In these days of fabricated and talentless "artists" like Beyonce, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girl, Britney Spears, anything from the past that has a solid rocking performance tend to be viewed like a mega banda. Grim Reaper was a very competent band, buch too much limited in their own style. That's why they succumbed.

1 out of 5 stars I'll see you in the cut-out bin!.......2004-01-11

These guys may be a part of that fabled NWOBHM, but don't be fooled! This is fat-man rock all the way, slavishly derivative of Judas Priest but with mega annoying lead vocals thrown in just to make things more bowel-distressing! There should be a law against this type of aural effrontery! Straight into a loaded toilet with this one!

5 out of 5 stars the best of both worlds.......2003-02-07

grim reaper's best two albums all on once cd...how they id it i'll never figure out...theres a reason they didnt combine their 3rd and final album with fear no evil or see you in hell...because it [was bad]]! the title track was all it had going for it...these two however, are classic...see you in hell's production sounds slightly muffled but if can get past that, and you will, you'll hear and appreciate what awaits your metallic eardrums...my favorite tracks are "see you in hell", "fear no evil"," matter of time", "never coming back","liar","wrath of the ripper","final scream","r&r tonight",and the ballad "the show must go on"...you're obviously familiar with grim reaper or you wouldnt be bothering reading this review, so what are you waiting for? this kicks major maximus, so order a copy before they disappear!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Death Metal........2006-03-13

This was the CD that introduced me to Soul Reaper, even before I ever discovered Dissection. Every song on this CD is a five star rating. I place these guys right up there with Vital Remains, old Morbid Angel, Suffocation and many more. They sound (to me at least) like old Morbid Angel from the Altars of Madness era, mixed with more technicality to the songs. Killer vocals and one hell of a tight band. These guys do not sound sloppy ... anywhere. Don't pass this one up. Check my review for their other CD on Amazon, Liferazer, also a five star Death Metal masterpiece. Cheers,
Necrosoul.

5 out of 5 stars written in blood... and I love it.......2003-06-12

Yes, this band features members from the well-known DISSECTION!! "Written In Blood" is an essential album for fans of death metal everywhere. There is more 'death' involved here than found in "The Somberlain" for example, which is why I probably enjoy this somewhat differently, if not more, than DISSECTION. Black metal can be great, but death metal I love most. So, buy it now and play it loud!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Crushing.......2000-08-02

What happens when former members of the mighty band Dissection unite? You get one of the most fierce, crushing, awesome death metal records. Fans of Dissection will like this, fans of death metal will love this. Get it now, the review above is a bogus review and just hurts the whole Amazon rating system.

1 out of 5 stars Hmmm...........2000-06-13

    5 out of 5 stars I can't complain........2007-07-03

I'd like to give this album 4.5 stars, but since I can't I'll give them a 5 just so that i don't mess up their Amazon rating. This is a really well done album, much better than I expected. I would describe them as a death metal band, but not the grindcore/modern death metal style, rather, much more like old school death metal music (like the band DEATH). There is also a few songs that sound quite black metal, and a few songs that sound a bit thrashy. Whatever kind of metal you want to call it, it's good, and I like it.

    5 out of 5 stars a combination of American thrash...from overseas.......2007-01-15

during my listening to this album, I was able to pick up overtones of Overkill, Exodus, Megadeth, Testament, and Slayer. I don't know who Toxine sounds like, because this is the first Witchery album I have purchased. I hope a new album comes out because this one is KKKKKKKKiller. purchase this if you like Anthrax, Megadeth, Carnal Forge, The Haunted, Slayer, Overkill, Kreator, Sacred Reich (R.I.P.), Forbidden (R.I.P.), Flotsam & Jetsam, Horrorscope (?), Pantera (R.I.P.), Testament, Overkill, Exodus, Demiricous, Sodom, Destruction, and Rumpelstiltskin Grinder.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Money.......2006-12-19

I picked this up at the Tower Records sell out (60% off) and I was not disappointed. This is quite good and a nice variety of death/thrash. It starts out with a great instrumental and goes into an interesting and fresh sounding group of songs. It has all the requisites of death, blast beats, harsh vocals, along with a thrash sensibility. I usually give four listens before I decide on an album but one listen gave me what I needed to know about this one. It is very good and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Back from the grave!.......2006-09-04

Witchery returns with their 4th album, "Don't fear the reaper". Featuring their usual experienced line-up with TOXINE (ex-Satanic Slaughter/Seance) in vocals, Richard CORPSE (also was in Satanic Slaughter) and Jensen (SS/Seance now in THE HAUNTED) in guitars, Sharlee D'Angelo (Mercyful Fate, Arch Enemy, Sinergy, Illwill, Dismember) in bass, and Martin AXENROT(SS / Bloodbath) ...Experienced guys who know what they're doing, and how to do it right. Looking at these names, it's easy to guess what kind of music they play: Straight-forward thrash-death metal, with crushing-hard riffing guitars, with lots of double drum-kicking and satanic harsh growls courtesy of Mr. TOXINE, in a horror/terror/death/grave atmosphere (lyrics, vocals, sound, layout, cover, music, looks, etc). What would you expect from songs such as "Plague Rider", "Ritual", "Draw Blood", "Ashes" or Immortal Death"?!?!?...

Witchery didn't try to reinvent the genre with this brand new album, or try to do something experimental adding voice effects, or clean vocals, or synths like most bands do nowadays...Witchery's style is more old-school trash/death metal (with a state of the art) production than melodic death metal...They just did their thing, true to their roots, rocking hard and fast, with nothing out of place. They won't bore you with neverending solos or unneccesary parts. And that's precisely the thing I like the most: the simplicity in their music and, at the same time, their efficiency to create something new and fresh in a genre in which everything seems to be invented...

You'll find in this album different tempos; fast songs, mid tempo, some instrumentals. Mind-blowing songs such as the ultra-fast "Plague Rider", the opener "Stigmatized", "Immortal Death" (a Satanic Slaughter song) and "Cannonfodder", or heavy midtempos such as "Draw Blood" with a catchy riff and "Ashes", with a keyboard background in which a picture the band playing in a graveyard...

Anyways, I've liked this band since their first album, "Restless & Dead" (which I still consider their masterpiece) came out. I was really looking forward to this album and they didn't let me down...I find their style very appealing to my musical taste...I hope you will too!

    SEPTEMBER, 2006.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid........2006-04-19

Their previous albumn never got the recognition it deserved in my mind, but oh well...I loved it. I was excited to buy this, and it has not been a disappointment. The bands sounds like you would expect from a group with members of the Haunted and Arch Enemy...swedish death metal, but they do it very well.

I'd have to say they are elite when it comes to this genre of metal. the songs are well crafted, catchy, and most of all, they aren't one sound throughout the albumn. What I mean is...it's not speed from start to stop...they change things up, and put in thought when writing hooks and solos. It's good musicianship, not just thrash for speed's sake.

If you are into bands like the Haunted definitely check them out, they have a wicked sound. Not original, but done very well.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Kind of Dead.......2006-03-27

When I found this cd just days ago, I picked it up for 2 songs: "I Want My Baby Back" by Jimmy Cross and to once again own a copy of Jack Kittel's "Psycho".

The real psychodrama occured in the record store while I listened to the disc when I got to track #12, "Once You Understand" by Think. Suddenly it was 1972 & I was 12 again and hearing this tragic song of The Generation Gap playing over & over again from my sister's bedroom. I (literally) screamed aloud in the store, startling the guy at the listening station next to me.

I had completely forgotten about this wonderful/wretched li'l morality play in the vein of Diane & Art Linkletter's "We Love You, Call Collect". Parents yelling at kids, kids whining at parents, tragic death & remorse; it's all here, served up with a big dollop of nausea.

Buy this disc & help raise the standards of Listening Quality instead of racing to plunge to the bottom of the turd-barrel with everyone else & fighting over the loose change down there.
