Customer Reviews:
Bad Company Find Their Own Sound.......2007-05-12
the previous Bad Company release 'fame and fortune' found the band confused and trying out a completely new style...it sounded great but the hard core fans responded by not buying it (which was unfair in my opinion)
but on 'Holy Water' the band found their own style
which they stuck to for this release and the following 3 releases as well
it is more modern sounding then the releases with Paul Rogers singing
and I think there are more 'hits' on these releases
Holy Water starts out very strong with the title cut which rocks hard
from there is another big hit 'Walk Through Fire' which is pure radio bliss...'Stranger Stranger' sounds a bit like old Bad Company with an updated sound...'If You Needed Somebody' is a beautiful ballad (which would also have worked for Def Leppard)
but my favorite track on the album is 'Fearless' which has a great beat and lyrics about a girl who is fearless and loves having fun...'Boys Cry Tough' is a beautiful song with story telling lyrics that really work,it's very emotional...the whole album is very solid and the format works
one listen to this album and you'll see why Bad Company was all over the radio when this album was released
the upside - pure radio bliss...awesome songs from start to finish...the best are 'Fearless' 'Boys Cry Tough' and 'Walk Through Fire'
the downside - really can't think of any
the bottom line - this was the start of the new era of Bad Company,a formula of great catchy songs done in a dark bluesy style,it worked great! Donutman says so!!!
the best of the Howe-era Bad Company albums.......2007-04-28
I think we can all agree that the old Bad Company albums with Paul Rodgers on vocals are rightly viewed as classics. I also think that if you take an honest look back at those albums, you'll see that those last few albums were not on the same level as Bad Company or Straight Shooter. The band needed a shot in the arm and got just that when they hired former Ted Nugent vocalist Brian Howe. Howe was the perfect choice for the arena rock decade, and his tenure in Bad Company is still criminally underrated.
I know this kind of AOR/arena rock is almost universally ridiculed now, but plenty of us who grew up in that era can still appreciate an album full of big guitar hooks, rock anthems, bic-flicking ballads, and an unapologetic use of keyboards. Bands like Damn Yankees, Bad English, Foreigner, and of course Bad Company embraced this sound, and rode an unexpected second wave of popularity as a result.
Bad Company's 1990 album Holy Water is (pardon the pun) the high water mark for the Howe-era lineup. This album starts with the powerful title track and then hits you with the song "Walk Through Fire", which is one of the era's absolute best rock songs (Lou Gramm's "Midnight Blue" is the other). It doesn't let up there, instead charging through rockers like "Stranger Stranger" and "Fearless" as well as the hit ballad "If You Needed Somebody". Someone already noted that the album loses a little steam in the second half, but even the average song on Holy Water is still better than many of their contemporaries' best efforts.
This is about as strong an AOR album as you could ever hope to find. The first half easily deserves a 5-star rating, and the second half is worthy of at least 4 stars. Holy Water may remain shunned by old school Bad Company fans, but it's one of the era's best rock albums, and one that all 80's/early 90's rock fans will definitely want to check out.
Bad Company- Holy Water CD.......2007-03-10
The holy water cd is my favorite newer Bad Company albums. But nothing beats the old songs.
Decent stuff, nothing fantastic.......2006-10-25
The late '80s/early '90s Bad Company fronted by Brian Howe is nothing compared to the old Paul Rodgers-fronted Bad Co. Nevertheless this is a pretty listenable album with a handful of good tunes.
"Holy Water" is a great early '90s arena rocker and the best tune on the album. It's got a cool guitar riff and a great singalong chorus. "If You Needed Somebody" is the big hit power ballad and another good tune.
There are a couple other good tunes like "Walk Through Fire" and "I Can't Live Without You" but that's about it. The songwriting is quite up to snuff and the production by Terry Thomas makes most of the songs sound similar. Drummer Simon Kirke contributes the acoustic "100 Miles" as a closer which is welcome because the spare production contrasts with the overproduction of the record.
Before I close, I must say that guitarist Mick Ralphs has a really awesome guitar tone on this record. Unfortunately he is often overwhelmed by the synths and drums.
HOLY WATER is definitely worth a listen if only for the title track. Not one I'd pick up new, but buying it used for a pretty cheap price is not a bad investment at all.
Holy Water Theme.......2005-10-10
I really love the song Holy Water, with its big-power-song rhythms and lyrics. Bad Company provides an entire album wrapped around that feeling.
If you've heard Holy Water and don't like it, then let's be honest, you probably won't like this CD. That's what the whole CD is about - blasting guitars, loud vocals about overcoming obstacles and getting to your goals. If you buy a new age CD about oceans, you get lots of soothing songs about the ocean. If you get Holy Water, you get lots of charge-you-up, you-can-do-it songs about relationships. That sounds fine by me!
Walk through Fire is of course about facing obstacles to get to someone. Stranger Stranger is about a hot, humid daydream. The other songs have their own variations, but mostly this is a long power-opus to the power of the individual who Knows What He Wants and is Willing to Go Get it.
There are plenty of other CDs out there for those seeking complex guitar solos and multiplex harmonies. Sometimes you just want a belting-it-out song that screams of leather jackets and smokey bars. This is the one!

There're all kinds of outlandish behavior in music, a good deal of which mellows over the years into merely peculiar or boorish art. Really weird, however, is enduring and The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders is really weird. The sole major-label recording by remnants of acid folkies the Holy Modal Rounders (essentially Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber) and Stampfel's spinoff "rock band" the Moray Eels (which included playwright Sam Shepard), here is an unholy noise that mates the urban-hippie aesthetic of 1968 with a deep-seated love of deep folk music. Jug music for the psychotic segment of the psychedelic set, this 13-song collection is outlandish even by the Rounders' by-now well-established standards. Opening with the nearest thing to a hit the band ever produced--"Bird Song" (familiar to fans of the '60s flick Easy Rider)--the collection tumbles forward like a bad trip across a tremulous American landscape. Think of it as an East Coast cousin of the Mothers of Invention's contemporaneous We're Only in It for the Money. The 2002 reissue boasts entertaining liner notes from Stampfel and Richie Unterberger that will clear up a little of the chaos heard on the disc. But only a little. --Steven Stolder
Album Description
Led by maverick folksters Peter Stampfel & Steve Weber, the Holy Modal Rounders fused Greenwich Village strum & Appalachian drone with enough mind-altering chemicals to derail the Wabash Cannonball. This 1968 masterpiece spotlights such drug-addled ramblings as 'Bird Song', featured in the Easy Rider soundtrack. Remastered & available on CD for the first time. Water Records. 2002.

Are You normal,? this is nothing for You.......2006-08-16
If You're not prepared before listening this could be a mental schock. The upspeeded combination of amphetamin and LSD makes the music going crazy. This kind of hippie-hallucination shows how sounds from inside a brain can wind up in recorded tracks. How they do it I can't understand. But I love it and realize that even music can be a drug. A healthy one.
sound sound.......2006-03-06
First I got, "good taste is timeless" and it was ok, but not as wacky as the album cover promised. A couple years later, I got this one. This is the album I was looking for and immediately understood my dissapointment in "good taste is timeless" The producer of this album started with the name Barry Friedman, and by the end went by Frazier Mohawk. That should give you some inkling of what you are getting into. Although "The STP Song" (actually titled August, 1967) is cut in half, the destruction of the singular song contributes to the overall aesthetic (I don't really think there is a concept here, aside from lets get these guys in the studio before they forget these songs). The brevity facilitates listening to the album straight through, creating a streaming experience instead of a collection of compositions. Even at 29 minutes Meethmr takes it time, from the ethereal nasal voyage of bird song to the frantic panic of getting a F on your report card, this album is a must.

My mom gave me a nickel to buy a pickle, I didn't buy a pickle I bought some du ji, du du du du du du-ji how I love du-ji I love to du my du-ji I du du du. Did you ever hear of the Doobie Brothers? Well Stampel and Webber are the Duji Brothers. Buy this Immediately!
truly fine citizens get REALLY wrecked..........2002-11-12
and here's the result. this is one of two holy modal rounders releases that are truly over the edge, the other being indian war whoop, and this one blows war whoop out of the water. listening to this makes me think there is a possibility to the long standing myth that late 60's acid rock/psychedelia was worth the vinyl it was burned on. the first thing you'll notice is: peter stampfel, singer of the bird song, REALLY does sing that way. the second is: beneath all the half assed playing lies some good songs. thirdly: these are funny songs that REALLY are funny (see half a mind & take off artist). the one gripe i have is that its all over much too quickly-this is a short album and those who expect their cd's to have 70+ minutes of music might feel a little gyped. but better 30 great minutes than 70 okay minutes, as i always say. survey says: buy this!
Ridiculous but also Sublime.......2002-08-07
This wonderful album is as weird as everyone says it is, but it also has some truly lovely moments. "One Will Do for Now" sounds almost like a Renaissance madrigal, and "Dame Fortune" is one of the most haunting, sublime songs I've ever heard, from anyone. That's what makes this album extraordinary: the range from sublime moments like these to the ridiculous, but hugely enjoyable, other songs on this album. "That's artiste to you"!

my favorite kinski album..........2005-12-31
SHOPPERS, TAKE NOTE: this album contains some of the most sublime noodling and noise you are likely to hear your stereo system emit. Truly!
Kinski is an excellent band from Seattle. If you are open to the musical possibilities of unfamiliar sounds, sonic textures and song structures, then you will be very pleased with any of their albums. They are alternately described as post-psyche, experimental, space-rock, ambient, noise-rock, and so on.
Don't Climb On is made up of five tracks, four of which (1,3,4,5) frame the one track that really matters (2): The Misprint in the Gutenberg Printshop. A 29-minute improvisational performance, performed live (to a seemingly very small audience), Misprint is an amazingly beautiful composition, one of the most organic, ethereal, and suggestive pieces of music I have ever heard. I rank Misprint right up there with the very best of Popul Vuh---that is, it's a half-hour of sound which reaffirms what I believe to be true about the spiritual capacity of human beings. It's really that fricking good!
The sound of Misprint (and the rest of the album as well) is hard to describe. There is a lot of spiralling guitar feedback, unusual shimmers, etc., but it's all layered in such a way as to sound completely natural, coherent and emotionally honest. The noise of the guitars (which reaches points of near-saturation at times) is balanced nicely with a very tranquil sounding flute. There are rises and falls. There aren't any vocals (or even any percussion, I think) to interrupt the flow. The effect is gorgeous and encourages all kinds of (inadequate) metaphorical comparisons: it's like watercolor, like spending a year on the desert and watching the storms, like observing sentient robots performing Tai Chi on some distant moon. Kinski is one of the bands of the last five years which restored my faith in music (and the commerce thereof).
Don't Climb On and Take the Holy Water---contemplative, raw, disturbing, serene. It's very moving. You will not be disappointed!
Is this MUSIC?????????.......2005-08-17
This is the worst crap I have ever heard - just noodlings and noise - what a load of bollocks!!

Customer Reviews:
For Crumb enthusiasts.......2006-11-19
The three works on this disc are somewhat "typical" Crumb. "Songs, Drones, and Refrains of Death" is not Crumb's greatest work, even if it has his signature gestures -- a combination of speaking and singing during songs, shouting from the percussion players, among other techniques. It's a little contrived and more than a little dated (it's unmistakably 1960s avant-garde), but it's not a bad work. The recording's vocal performance by both the ensemble and the soloist sounds very muddled, which is unfortunate.
The Suite for Christmas has never been my favorite work. Crumb's other works for piano, such as the Makrokosmos books, are so much better it makes this work really look kind of anomalously amateur, even though I'm sure it's extremely hard to play. Orkis makes the most of this work, it's as good as I've ever heard it.
Apparition is by far the best work on this disc. It focuses on death just like the Songs and Drones, but Apparition also has some of the most delicate music found in any of Crumb's works. And the singing is sharp and clear, even with the transparent textures of the music. It uses Walt Whitman's Death Carol as its text and really captures the mysticism, light, and darkness that surrounds death that Whitman conveys in his poem.
Overall, it's a good disc. It's definitely a great disc for people who like Crumb, but I know I wouldn't have explored much more of his music if this were my introduction.
