Customer Reviews:
One of their more melodic albums .......2006-08-16
King's X released their sixth album, Ear Candy, in 1996. Unlike their previous album, the very heavy Dogman, Ear Candy saw the band go in a more melodic direction. Also worth noting is that Ty Tabor sings more leads than usual (he had no lead vocals on Dogman), and he plays a lot more lead guitar too. The opener "The Train" has been called metal meets psychedelia by many reviewers and that pretty much sums it up. After this track, the tracks primarily fall between melodic and heavy with the emphasis on the former. As for the melodic, most of the tracks are top notch. "(Thinking and Wondering) What I'm Gonna Do" is an awesome track with an almost tribal feel and a very quiet lead vocal from Doug Pinnick while the excellent "Picture" speaks of a family reunion and has a cool ride out similar to their track "The Burning Down." While the band is well known for their excellent harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles, the track "American Cheese", which features lead vocals from drummer Jerry Gaskill, actually sounds like something the Beatles would have written in their prime. Outstanding. Ty Tabor also contributes two gems in the ballad "Life Goes By" and the very catchy "Mississippi Moon", a song that could have been a hit single if given a chance. As for the rockers, "Looking For Love" and "Run", a track which interestingly enough is one of their few to not have any harmonies, are very strong and contain riffs ala Led Zeppelin while "Sometime", not to be confused with the track "Sometimes" from their debut album, Out Of The Silent Planet, is another great song with the band's trademark harmonies. Other tracks like "A Box" and "Fathers" are also very good. The tracks "Lies in the Sand" and "67" are decent but don't touch the rest of the album. All told, another strong album from one of the most enduring and talented rock bands around. Although this is currently out of print, it is worth scoping out.
Excellent Album/CD.......2006-07-21
King's X shines through on this 1996 release, boasting their delicious harmonies woven into feel good metal power..not that doom metal, but positive hard rock sound. I fully recommend this CD. AWESOME!
One of their finest work.......2006-05-05
This album is really good it has variety, beautiful arrangements, like acoustic tones, with sutile 12 string bass thumping and a little lap steel hidden. Their vocals are great. In this album you can find ballads, power tracks and everything in between. King?s X Ty Tabor is famous for practically introducing drop D tuning in the metal guitar he and the rest of the band hell of a musicians! you gotta have this album
King's X's Rubber Soul.......2006-01-17
This CD is Brilliant. I think most people who don't rate this one high are generally Kings X fans from the Gretchen Goes to Hollywood and Out of the Silent Planet period. This CD is as much of a departure from that period as Rubber Soul and Revolver were from the earlier Beatles recordings. There are no throw-away tunes on this CD. Each song is a jewel. Production is phenomenal. I had to re-check the cover a few times to make sure George Martin wasn't listed. There is a lot of experimentation with different sounds. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, but on Ear Candy all the experimentation serves the song, and is integral to the composition of the individual tracks. No gimmicks. As for Ty Tabor, he is not known for playing many wasted notes, but on Ear Candy everything he plays is essential. Take a solo out and you've screwed the song. I think this CD holds his best playing. There is a little more of Ty's vocals and influence on Ear Candy, and Doug comes out a little more subdued, but what you learn from that is how versitile and subtle Doug can be. Jerry's drumming is fabulous, as always. One of rock's most under-rated drummers! If you are new to King's X, I would start here. This CD has the most to offer to the widest audience. Usually that means a crappy album, but occasionally, as with Ear Candy, it means a masterpiece.
Sonic perfection.......2003-11-22
These legends hit another home run with Ear Candy. Each song should have been a radio hit. This was really King's X at the peak of their career. They have been on a slow down cycle since, culminating with the horrible release "Black Like Sunday" in 2003.

I have to tell you that I think the cd is AWESOME!.......2001-12-24
WOW! I have to tell you that I think the cd is AWESOME! I was blown away by it. He's just plain on fire! Man, that stuff gets the juices flowin' pretty quick. Being a bass player, I LOVE stuff like that. Funk mixed with rock just gives you so much room to move as a bass player. Well, I just had to write and tell you how much I LOVE the disc. ..........Peter Tudisco
A delight for guitar lovers!.......2001-06-23
Michael Monarch - "Guitar Bazaar" Many "guitar-oriented" albums are released each year. Some are wimpy new-age efforts, others bluesy romps, recycling old licks 'til the cows come home. This is none of these - just a straight-ahead rock and roll whirlwind, moving effortlessly one tune to another, with major influences Jeff Beck and Albert King echoing throughout. Monarch, former lead guitarist for Steppenwolf, is an accomplished fret man, and he plays the majority of instruments on this outing. The tunes range from the subtle, moody "Black Satin Sheets" to "Technical Meltdown," which begins tongue-in-cheek, pastiching the faux-jazz that passes for music on our local station - very tasty, and quite aggressive. Monarch has an attack and control over tone seasoned by years of playing, and he's a joy to hear, whether playing forceful, crunchy rock ("Toastin' Jam") or something more playful and thoughtful ("Little Dreamer"). All in all, this outing is a delight for guitar lovers.........Stephan Patt, Vintage Guitar Magazine, May 2001

Customer Reviews:
"Small Talk" hits the spot!.......2006-06-06
This is a great CD, Exciting sound -driving rythms and great melodies. Every track had a different style. I usually get bored listening to the same artist or group, but not this one! There were a couple of tracks that were a little too hard rock, but other than that we LOVED it! Our favorite track - 'End of the Line". A "must buy"
