Editorial Reviews

After years of playing apocalyptic, Elvis-infatuated plod-rock, Glenn Danzig has shifted gears in a more cutting-edge direction. On Blackacidevil, Danzig coats his testosterone-pumped vocals with an abrasive layer of distortion, and electrifies his rhythms with pounding industrial beats and sludgy, feedback-saturated guitars. Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell lends an ominous touch to three of the tracks, including a cover of Black Sabbath's "Hand of Doom." After recording Blackacidevil, Danzig recruited ex-Prong frontman Tommy Victor into the band, which bodes well for their future output. --Jon Wiederhorn

4 out of 5 stars MISUNDERSTOOD MASTERPIECE!.......2007-07-18

I CAN Understand the backlash that met the release of this album. Subconsciously, a number of fans decided to "take sides" with former Danzig members, Eerie, Christ & Chuck. This was made more evident and "necessary" due to the direction that Glenn chose to take with this album. Also, the backlash in the media at the time against Glenn tainted the opinions of many (you can make up your own mind if any of the backlash was legitimate).
One must wonder, if Glenn had decided to release this album under another name, as a side project, rather than an actual Danzig album, how it would have been received? A moot point, yes, but still a valid one, I think.
It's actually amusing to think how close-minded the whole "rock" (metal and punk, included) world is. Rebellion being such a necessary component of rock n roll, it's actually interesting how staid and conformist the scene ultimately is. Record company execs, it would seem, have won control of our minds (souls?) it would seem.
The weakest aspect of Blackacidevil is undeniably Glenn's vocals (THE main reason I became a fan of his in the first place). They're either too muddied in the mix, or else not as strong/confident as they should be. (It's interesting to note that in the early 90s Glenn commented on Henry Rollins as not "living up to his full potential" whatever that meant?? Take a look in the mirror black, GD! Or maybe all the Elvis & Jim Morrison comparisons took their toll?) And yes, there are some awkwardly bad lyrics on this album. But overall, I like it. It has many great, rocking songs on it. "Come To Silver" , "Ashes" , "See All You Were" and "Power Of Darkness" are especially strong, in my opinion.
If you don't like this album, that's your choice, fine. But just answer for yourself: does the fact you don't "like" the approach Glenn took with this release say more about Glenn's shortcomings or your own?

1 out of 5 stars Who are these people kidding?.......2007-06-22

This is the worst Danzig album ever! On this album, Danzig tries to appeal to fans of coldwave and industrial music, and he fails miserably. Danzig is not the kind of band that needs to be attempting a Nine Inch Nails sound. If Trent Reznor made a an album that sounded like Lucifuge we'd all start chucking tomatoes at him. Same applies here. I have absolutely no idea why these bozos are asking for so much money for this crappy CD, but I urge you to avoid this album until it drops to....like a penny. It's terrible.

4 out of 5 stars a different direction.......2007-02-19

This album is a bit of a shock. I don't mean that in any bad way, but I was surprised when I heard this. At first I didn't like it. But then I realized that is a progression. All bands go through this. So Danzig wants to make a techno industrial album? And i thought, what the hell? Why not??

It really shouldn't have been too much of a surprise anyway. He did use some industrial vocal effects and guitars for bits of 'Until You Call On The Dark' and 'Cantspeak' from Danzig 4, right?? Plus he released an earlier version of Deeper (called simply Deep) on an X-Files soundtrack, which was clearly industrial. This was at least a year before this album came out. So we should not be completely surprised that this album sounds this way.

I see all the other reviews here, citing NIN and that Danzig clearly ripped off the sound and did a bad job. *rolling my eyes* Ok, maybe that's true. But that's pretty much what all music (all art forms really) is: taking from someone else!

Anyway, this is a good album. I don't like it as much as the others, but it does have some great songs on it. Even the new songs are worth hearing for any Danzig fan.

It's good to hear Danzig mixing his songs on albums again. There are no pauses between any of these songs. '7th House' and "Blackacidevil' are good openers here. 'See All You Were' is a great song with awesome lyrics.'Sacrifice' is a simple song that has some of the best lyrics on the entire album. 'Hint Of Her Blood' starts with drums and distortion, before the drums kick in near the end. 'Deeper' is a good performance here and should have been on the original album.

'Serpentia' is a forceful song with erotic images and features a good industrial drum rhythm. 'Come To Silver' is well written and is clearly the best song here. 'Hand Of Doom' is a Black Sabbath cover. 'Bleedangel' is the best of the three songs added for this new version. A great drumbeat and nice hushed vocals. The out of time little clicks on this are awesome. 'Power Of Darkness' is one of the better songs here. On the original version of this album, this came right after Hand Of Doom and putting in Bleedangel ruined the entire flow and mood. It should have come after this song. But this is only as minor complaint. Ashes is a great hushed song with more great lyrics. It's filled with a great wind blowing effect that reminds me a cold winter's day. To my knowledge they have never done this live, but it would be amazing.

'Don't Be Afraid' is pretty much a throwaway. This is basically a track featuring Glenn's vocal played through a keyboard and distorted. It is interesting, but I'm glad this was put at the end of the album and not in the middle. its makes it very easy to skip if its last. Besides it is a bit louder than the other songs and would have sounded terrible had it been in the middle somewhere.

Anyway, a 4 star album. Not like the old stuff, and a bit over the top, but still worth a listen if only to see that he can try something different.

2 out of 5 stars Lucifuge this is not........2006-12-22

This is a cheap imitation of the sound that Trent Reznor claims responsibility for. That isn't to say that Reznor invented this sound, but it's obvious listening to Danzig 5 that NIN is as far into the industrial scene that Glenn Danzig cared to explore when compiling this particular collection of songs. The official story is that Rick Rubin had been holding him back from doing this type of music for years. It's pretty difficult for me to believe that story, primarily because most of Danzig 5 is DIRECTLY ripped off from Reznor's The Downward Spiral. I'm a big fan of Misfits, Samhain, and also Danzig's first 4 albums, so this is not a slag-off of Danzig as a whole, but this particular album is best left alone. If you're interested in how Glenn interprets 90's era industrial music, I'd still say you're better off skipping this one. This album has nothing to offer besides a pale imitation of a true industrial masterpiece - The Downward Spiral.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Change of Pace.......2006-10-16

I think it is most comparable to NIN, especially since it came out only a couple years after Downward Spiral. I thought and still do that it is a very good album. If you're a metal purist--someone who likes rock and shuns anything that's not simply guitars, vocals, bass, and drums, then you won't like this album. If you're the type of person that gets tired of that formula--like me--this cd is for you. I have all of danzig's albums, and this is one I get tired of the least.

It's not a techno cd, I still cringe when I hear that--it's industrial in the style of NIN. At the time, perhaps it was posturing on Glenn's part, but it was a solid effort nonetheless.
