3 out of 5 stars Stick we the older cd released of this.......2007-05-09

I heard a couple of these songs before i have a tape of his best of and that version of Famous Blue Raincoat is different and better. This new version has Cohen's voice up front and center which is not his strong suit. You cant hear the melody of the song that much anymore. I notice this on Last Years Man as well. The other songs on here are good accept that diamond song which is quite bad and really shows why he does not have much of a voice. I have the old cd version of songs of and the sound quality is not that good i have to turn up the volume so that is why i waited to get the restored version of this cd. I should have just gotten the old version of this instead. I would probably like it more with repeat listens it takes a couple of listens to get what his lyric mean.

I listen to this cd again it is a good one i will give it 4 stars now. Every song is good accept Diamonds on your mind that still sucks. My fav is Joan of Ark. There are two songs on here that mention her why didn't he put her on the cover.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Rain Falls Down on Last Year's Man.......2007-02-21

The first song sets the tone for the album. Avalanche is just what it sounds like... a man's life caving in on top of him sung with bitterness, bile and sarcasm, his trademark guitar propelling the ballad forward, stark and primal. And it only gets better from there. Cohen's voice is raw and powerful on every track, often framed by the celestial chorus of women's voices that offer a sharp contract to his. Well know songs on the CD include Famous Blue Raincoat and Joan of Arc. But the lesser known songs are gems in their own right. Especially gloomy are the self-mocking Last Year's Man and suicidal fantasy Dress Rehearsal Rag, both with brilliant lyrics.

Deservedly the CD continues to grow in stature over the years. This music is sure to be a party killer, but perfect to listen to when you're alone, depressed, angry, smoldering with love and hate.... an anthem to the dark genius of Cohen.

5 out of 5 stars One of Cohen's best, IMHO.......2007-02-07

Can't get this on iTunes since it is an import. This is Cohen at his peak. If you have no Leonard Cohen - give this one a try!

5 out of 5 stars Dark and Brilliant.......2007-01-28

This is not the kind of album you want to put on when having a cocktail party. It's alone music. But it is a harrowing, brilliant album. Songs of Love and Hate begins with Cohen's trademark flamenco guitar and winds it's way through stark children's choruses and spine-tingling string accompaniments. But Cohen's startling lyrics take center stage. He is a poet on caliber with Bob Dylan. This album is so uncommercial, however, that it is out of print. I got my copy on eBay. The album hits a peak with track 4, "Diamonds In the Mine" a raucous, fun number where Cohen sounds dangerously unhinged. Just as it sounds like he's lost control, we return to his solo acoustic guitar on track 5, "Dress Rehearsal Rag." The towering, depressing "Famous Blue Raincoat" is featured on every Cohen retrospective and tribute album (of which there are several). It starts out with the poet intoning, "It's four in the morning, the end of September, I'm writing you now, just to see if you're better..." There's something about being awake at four in the morning. It's not the night, and it's not really the morning either. Most people are not awake at this hour. Only tortured loners like Leonard Cohen. SOLAH concludes with the elegiac "Joan of Arc" which, if you haven't slit your wrists by then, will send you off with the feeling that you have just heard something raw and painfully honest from a great songwriter. The album has a very cohesive quality, as if it could have been recorded all in one night. The mood captured is consistently somber but it has the feeling of a stark, emotional moment in time that was as rare as it was brief.

5 out of 5 stars His Ships Are On Fire.......2006-11-19

Because it was mostly unfamiliar, only one of the tracks appearing on Best Of LC or The Essential LC, I didn't listen to "Songs of Love and Hate" much at first. And none of it is what you'd call catchy sing-along music--maybe Diamonds in the Mine, if you can get a good scream going on by the end. But the more I listen the more I appreciate the raw emotional power than Cohen invests in these songs. "Avalanche" makes me feel a little guilty about being a liberal; "Last Year's Man" leads the listener directly to "Dress Rehearsal Rag", a state-of-mind I'd wish on no one; "Diamonds in the Mine"--a bouncy little piece of nihilism; "Love Calls You" even with its odd rhythmic structure, seems almost upbeat; after the painfully personal "Famous Blue Raincoat, Cohen invites us to "Sing Another Song, Boys" as his "ships are on fire" (I'm always right there on "she waves a Nazi dagger" for some reason). By the time the quite "Joan of Arc" comes along, we're ready for some peace, which only comes in the name of fire. All in all, an emotional juggernaut; emblematic of Cohen's genius.

5 out of 5 stars What can I tell you, my brother, my killer?.......2006-10-14

I originally purchased this album after a friend had put Famous Blue Raincoat on a mix CD, and I was mad.

Why?

She didn't put the rest of the album on that mix CD.

This is the essence of Leonard Cohen - beauty in sorrow, sorrow in beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing.......2006-03-01

Roberta Alexander is stunning in these songs of Bernstein. Her voice simply shimmers. Really beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Only Roberta.......2003-12-02

Roberta Alexander is right on top of this recording. She has a beautiful and strong voice, but more importantly, she has perfect command of the music and idiom of these and Ives' songs. The emotional range of the songs is very wide, ranging from playful to thoughtful to sorrowful but she makes all of them sound very natural.

The Five Kid Songs express the imagination of a small child (Jupiter has seven moons, or is it nine? Saturn has a million billion trillion sixty-nine) and it would be very easy to perform them in a childish way, talking down as many adults do - the composer expressly stated that they should not be performed this way and in fact Alexander sings them with a perfectly natural innocence. La Bonne Cuisine is sung with a strong drive, and although it's hard to imagine what anyone should do with excerpts from a cooking book it's still compelling music. The other songs are also nice but not as memorable - as for the songs from Candide, they are beautiful but get the complete recording on Deutsche Grammophon, directed by Bernstein himself (there are two; I prefer the live version, ASIN B000001GD2).

Tan Crone does more than just provide a background; she adds her own interpretation on piano to add even more feeling to the music.

Bernstein's songs do not have the depth of Ives', but this is still a very nice collection. I will have to check out the Barber and Copland recordings on the same label as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Kick Upside The Head.......2006-04-21

This was the first Godflesh CD I purchased, before Streetcleaner and Pure. I ordered this from a catalog shortly after it's release and the little write up said perfect for Ministry fans so I figured hey what the hell. Now all these years later I still love this CD. It is my favorite Godflesh album and yes I now own evey other Godflesh album put to disc as well as a few side projects. There never has been a Godflesh album that I dislike, each one has been it's own beautiful beast. I wonder why so many Godflesh fans waste time tearing one album down to try to make another sound good. Godflesh lives forever. Praise the Flesh.

      5 out of 5 stars Godflesh's best work.......2005-03-24

Before I start, you should know that my opinion will vary wildly from what you're probably heard about this album. Fans love 'Streetcleaner', I abhore it. I also think 'Hymns' is second only to this, so obviously I'm not your common Godflesh fan.

Having only heard some 'Pure' era stuff previously, an ex-girlfriend of mine bought me this for my birthday. Well, girls come and girls go, and dammit, I still have my Godflesh 'Songs of Love and Hate'. It's that kind of album. I declared "Frail" as my favorite song, and today, it still is.

I blame this album for the rap/rock craze of the mid-90's, where the cool thing was to thank Godflesh in your liner notes. Infectious might be the word to describe the two opening tracks. Justin has always claimed that he hates metal and always wanted to bring more hip-hop influence into Godflesh. This album was the beginning of just that. Sure, there were others who did, but not with such raw anger.

The live drummer breathes new life into the tiring Godflesh formula. If you dislike the 'mechanical' sound, you might want to give this a try. Shame Brian ran off with Primus, I'd give an appendage to have this incarnation of Godflesh writing new music today. Luckily, we have the next best thing -- Jesu.

5 out of 5 stars What and Awesome CD!.......2004-01-24

This record - just like other Godflesh records invokes emotions and at the same time has riffs that you will remember till your end of your life!

That said, I hope the end of Ilya Malafeyev (from Russia) is pretty soon since he has the cheek to be blasphemous while he knows not what he is talking! For his information - I too am a Ministry fan, and if you know about Al Jourgensen's and ALL THE Fear Factory band member's tastes, you would know that they are huge Godflesh fans themselves. In fact if you've seen Ministry's Sphinctour DVD, you would see Al wearing mostly generic t-shirts, but the only "band" t-shirt he is seen wearing is Godflesh and that too this very album you chose to desecrate.

Go buy this CD and all others - all of them are masterpieces just as this one. Eagerly awaiting Jesu!

2 out of 5 stars What an awfully dull CD!.......2003-11-03

I wonder if people who give 5 stars to this CD ever heard about the band Ministry, or Fear Factory's scull-crushing "Demanufacture" album. Because compared to them, this album is just sleep-invoking piece of garbage. Start your typical drum-machine, add simplistic distorted bass-line, add simplistic guitar-line along the bass, add chaotic guitar effects here and there, add your typical "rough" vocals. You've got your typical masterpiece. Or haven't you?
The only thing saving this CD from being absolute junk is nice beats in a couple of songs, and successful atmospheric effects in another. That's it.
Well, it kinda flows nice in the background while you're reading some easy stuff, but this is about all it has to offer.

And I haven't yet mentioned the "lyrics". Oh, lyrics... "I hate myself. I am nothing. World-is-s**t" (TM) that sort of thing.

Save yourself some hard-earned cash. Spend it on the above-mentioned Fear Factory instead. Or, Ministry's "Psalm 69", or "Filth Pig" (which is very close to this album in mood, except that it was made with the word "GENIUS" stamped all over it). Or, if you're into heavier music and don't mind using human drummers, either one of the first two Machine Head's albums are head and shoulders above this.
      Choose wisely!

5 out of 5 stars An Angry cd.......2003-07-16

This isn't Godflesh's best record but I'll be damned if
it isn't one of their best. Brian Mantia plays drums on
this cd- the result? There really isn't much...actually if
I didn't read the liner notes I wouldn't be able to tell
really. That is until you check out the track "Frail"
the most organic song on the record. Yep- the cd flows into
usual Godflesh themes Broadrick and Green pen their anger
into obtuse imagery of religion, alienation, and non conformity.
Yupper...this cd is a must for GF fans. Proving still that they are/were a force to be reckon with and why they are possibly the
most imitated and underated bands in their genre.

5 out of 5 stars Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21

No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

            Album Description

            The Repo Session

Ghost in the Machine is back to haunt you again! The follow up CD to `The Haunting Begins…' has 8 new songs along with bonus tracks and remixes bringing the total to 17 songs! `The Repo Session' features the club smash `Rodeo', `Lady Love' and `Redemption'.

The sound of Ghost in the Machine has matured into an electrifying sonic force to be reckoned with. With Chris Weerts on vocals, RJ Thompson sharing axe duties and Mike Kern creating the foundation, they have added new elements and dimension to facilitate their musical evolution. One thing that has remained the same there is no genre to completely describe Ghost in the Machine. They fuse electro, dance, metal, techno, industrial, urban and that's just the beginning.

Lyrically, Ghost in the Machine falls to the dark side, retaining a glimmer of hope. Topics range from unrequited love to sex, from escaping oppression to spiritual enlightenment, and from the brutality of the crucifiction of Christ to revolutions.

Listen to the new album, see if you can define it. Ghost in the Machine thinks not. A fresh sound that you've not heard before.
