This sampler album of excerpts from seven other Anonymous 4 releases is a good introduction for anyone who is unacquainted with the A4's startlingly pure singing and virtually celestial blend. But if you fall under the spell of this outstanding a capella quartet, the present disc will become extraneous because you'll want to own the complete recordings from which it's drawn. If you prefer complete works to samplers, try taking the plunge with "An English Ladymass" or "On Yoolis Night." --Sarah Bryan Miller

An aural treat for lovers of vocal music.......2007-04-14
If you love vocal music these gals are fabulous! This is a best of album, which is always good as an introduction to a new artist. It gives you a taste of their various albums, so you can go ahead and pursue the ones you like. Enjoy!
Enchanting.......2007-01-10
If you enjoy music that takes you to a different time and place, you will get lost in time with this beautiful work.
If Angels Ever Recorded A CD.......2006-03-16
Four female voices have never blended together so perfectly and beautifully as do those of the 'Anonymous 4.' Their CD titled, 'Portrait' contains a selection of tracks from seven other previous CD's, kind of a "Best Of" you might say.
If angels ever came down from heaven to record a CD this is what they would sound like.
Harmonious, Celestial, Purifying and Eternal.
another exquisite performance.......2006-02-27
This amazing quartette is so talented. The Christmas cd reminds me of Christmas 50 years ago in rural England where I grew up. It contains the only rendition of The Holly and the Ivy I have heard that actually does the carol justice.
Anonymous, but in no way generic.......2001-02-04
I learned about this quartet though a review in Stereophile magazine. Although they don't publish a lot of reviews, I've had exceptionally good luck with their past picks and have been able to branch out successfully in new musical directions as a result.
These four women are virtuoso female vocalists, hauntingly pure of voice. They perform music from centuries ago in the same type of setting that it was originally performed in, with stunning results. I'm generally not one for "religious" material (this is the first recording of this nature I've ever bought), but this music goes so far back in time that it sounds more primal than Christian overall.
A refreshing change when you're in the right mood, and something that can relax even you type A personalities out there (and you *know* who you are :) , I can suggest this one without reserve. You'll be adding a nice, quiet corner to your collection, and you'll probably wind up visiting it more than you ever imagined.

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La Grone

I would order from you again........2007-01-27
Product arrived in a timely manner in new condition, still wrapped in plastic. Thank you.
Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07
I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.
I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...
good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24
This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD
Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29
It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.
The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.
When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.
Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02
Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

From the first notes of the Lenten antiphon "Immutemur," you feel a soothing, reassuring calm from Chanticleer's sensuous, lyrical legato style and perfect unison expression and phrasing. This is first class singing, no matter what the repertoire. But this just happens to be chant, which requires a particular sensitivity to syllabic emphasis and to the rise and fall of phrasing, all of which is determined as much by tradition as by sense of the text. Since there is no existing notation that clearly indicates rhythm or meter for the earliest body of chant repertoire, and there is no unbroken line of chant singing that goes back to the first and second centuries, singers have to rely on a certain accepted scholarship and a tradition that's only a couple of hundred years old. Chanticleer's performing decisions here are articulate, musicologically sensible, and above all musically satisfying, taking this music to its proper level of exalted simplicity. The program includes some of the gems of Gregorian chant, such as "Pange lingua, Crux fidelis" and "Victimae paschali laudes." --David Vernier

Music to Transport You.......2007-01-21
I love this CD and it accomplishes exactly what I'd hoped it would--it is relaxing, meditative, reflective and beautiful. I use it for my yoga exercises or when I want calming music.
The wrong CD.......2005-09-04
I really made a mistake in choosing this CD. The presentation was near perfect but I was looking for something more than just chanting.
Truely the best..........2003-09-12
...CD of Gregorian Chant (other than that recorded by our local abbey) that I have in my collection. The purity of pronounciation, the precision of timing and phrasing is beyond compare. Whether a lover of chant, or a first time listener, I recommend you give this a try.
Turn out the lights, light some candles, burn some incense and you will be transported to another, far more peaceful and less stressful place. I use this CD to focus on God during my prayer times, and I find it an invaluable worship resource.
Beautiful.......2002-05-19
I came upon Chanticleer through my interest in Renaissance polyphony. I bought their recording of Palestrina's Missa Pro Defunctis and was extremely pleased. I thought at first that they were explicitly dedicated to early music (I had only come across the Palestrina and this chant CD); my impression was that they were a kind of all-male version of the Tallis Scholars. I discovered, though, that they explore all types of music (from early to contemporary, even commissioning new works on a fairly regular basis). I was able to see them in concert a few weeks ago, and as always was impressed with their skill.
This group really does do almost everything well. They have put to disc a recording of Tallis' If Ye Love Me (one of the English Anthems) that is wonderful and sublime. When I heard them a few weeks ago, they did a few 20th century Cuban folk songs that were just as enjoyable. They are known best (probably) for their smooth sound and great blending. There are never any rough edges to any of the voices - even the countertenors, who are really quite skilled, by the way - and their balance is delicate and precise. That same smoothness is present on this CD as well. At times it is hard to believe that several voices are singing; the pitch and intonation is so good that often the 6 or so could pass for one or two. As usual, they are quite sensitive to the dynamics of the vocal line - their approach is subtle, and not forced. The result is an hour or so of chant that is soothing and relaxing, but also engaging and never monotonous.
The only drawback is this: as I understand the current state of "authentic" chant practice, Chanticleer's approach is probably not on the cutting edge of scholarly theory (they do not add some of the melismatic decorations that some groups use, for example). If you are really interested in that authenticity, the smooth voices might turn you off as well; many other groups use coarseness of the voices for texturing. Even if you are a stickler for those things, though, the visceral pleasure of listening to this recording will probably persuade you to put aside some of your ideas about "correct" practice.
On the other end of the spectrum (listeners with not much chant experience) this CD works to great effect as well. Again, the disc is an easy one to listen to; it is quiet and reflective without being spiritless. This CD might be a good choice for first exposure to Gregorian chant.
Highly recommended for all types of listeners. As per usual for Chanticleer, it is high quality work.
a great cd.......2001-10-23
This cd is great if your always feeling stressed out. The cd really shows how beautiful the latin language can be. Gregorian chanting is also one of the most oldest forms of christain worship dating back to a time when people lived in fear of the "dragons" that lived across the Altanic ocean and the "demons" that lived beyond what is now Germany. People looked to a higher power for comfort and still today the music is very relaxing. If you love the haunting latin voices are if your just a fan of the middle ages(the name chanticleer comes from the Chaucer's Canterbury Tales) then this cd is a must for you.

Bolivian Baroque CD.......2007-02-15
If you like baroque music, it's a delight to hear this unexpected music from South America.
Good quality sound
The DVD is interesting in filling in details of the history, the area and how the CD was produced.
Historicismo y musicalidad.......2006-07-21

Bruckner's sacred vocal works are certainly among the greatest vocal compositions of the 19th century; they shimmer in an otherworldly, almost immaterial glow. The Corydon Singers, under the direction of Matthew Best, have fastidious ears--their sensitive, vibrant sonorities are the crux of this altogether astonishing disc. --Joshua Cody
Customer Reviews:
the rare high A sung with love.......2007-07-19
I bought this CD on the strength of the reviews of others here, and my trust was rewarded. As soon as I heard the sopranos' high A in "Os Justi" NOT going sharp (very difficult to do, as I know from having sung and conducted it) and undergirded by bass/tenor/alto voices that each had a distinct timbre but managed to contribute to a felicitous whole, I knew I was in good hands. The entire CD balances warmth with precision. As a Roman Catholic and a musician I recommend this CD especially to those Catholics who feel dispirited by the mediocre music in much of today's masses--it will give you hope. And for everyone else, it is sheer beauty.
St. Anton Bruckner.......2006-07-23
These wonderful pieces of liturgical music represent the peace and purity Bruckner found through his faith in God. The writing is at times simple...as it should be...but this simplicity only serves to accentuate the tranquility and beauty of these works. Bruckner the symphonist and Bruckner the devout Catholic. Much like Bach, Bruckner's music bears witness to God and I even find myself truly believing when listening. In this day and age of largely agnostic and God-less music, it is Bruckner's music which I find so dear and it will forever remain so for those in need, due to its intrinsic spiritual and faithful character.
Great Recording and Music!
Superior Sacred Music.......2006-05-27
Bruckner is without doubt the best composer of sacred music since the Renaissance. Don't get me wrong, I love the sacred music of Bach, Mozart, even Verdi, but their works are more appropriate for the theater or concert hall than church. These motets could truly enhance the spiritual (and not just aesthetic) experience of a worship service, especially a Mass. Bruckner understood the difference between inspiring art and sacred art. What I just said does not apply to all his sacred music - his Te Deum is another example of "concert hall" sacred music - but it is certainly true of his motets and his E minor Mass for chorus and winds.
The performance on this disc, as others have said, is exquisite.
Rare to find.......2004-08-19
There are not many records of Bruckner motets, so I was happy to find this CD. I bought it together with Naxos Bruckner Motets (ASIN: B000001415)
No critic about performance or recordings quality, but finally I am no singer, just someone who likes classic music and Bruckner.
Review of few words.......2004-04-26
This is one of the greatest choral performances ever set to disc, if not the greatest.

The passionate serenity!.......2006-12-17
The febrile pulse and the way he phrased every single bar, make we can define the Richter's taste. Nobody like him could approach with such staunch and with that wise [....] around the spirit of the composer. That quality may be appreciated with major intensity since the seventies , when the poetry, the mercurial passion and the lyricism shook hands each one another. His repertoire experienced a notable twist; he left behind the Russian repertoire aside, and his interests overturned specially around Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven. So we have the most distinguished, imaginative and refined Russian pianist swimming in German literature. The effort was compensated by far; the inner tensions, the core of the work nestled beneath the score, the magic atmosphere he produced, captivated two great countries; Japan and U.K.
Introspection and solemnity hovered by a contemplative gaze and profound sentiment. The philosopher pianist, possessed now a major lyrical vein, absolutely free of rhetorical conventionalisms. Possibly Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann were the composers whom Richter expressed with major wise objectivity and sheer poetry. He loved the challenges and knew Kempff had written golden pages around these notable composers. Nevertheless the genius blossomed and permitted a vivid renaissance of pristine lyricism never heard before.
Undeniably, the seventies was the most productive, valuable and extraordinary decade of this prolific pianist. You may realize the wide catalogue and countless concerts, where he was beloved and admired.
So,leaving aside my profound admiration for this great interpreter, I invite you in case you don't to explore unexpected facets of the pianism of this genius of the keyboard, and this volume is specially a concluding evidence about it.
awe inspiring playing.......2006-04-03
I've just got home having heard a rather zealous/charmless live performance of Schubert 9 by Sir John Eliot Gardiner/LSO.
Suddenly,to hear Richter's playing of these Sonatas is to be transported into another world of musical re-creation.Whatever strange things Richter does -slow tempi, violent fortissimos-one is left with an overwhelming sense of rightness,of being taken on a great spiritual journey.
That may sound simple like a simple accomplishment but it's all too rarely achieved!
it ought to be noted that Richter's recording of the 1st movement of D960 beautifully frames that most inspiring of documentaries 'Richter, the Enigma'/bruno monsanigen
genius.......2004-12-11
This is simply a wonderful and stunning disc. Early 1970s recordings belying their age. Richter's playing, especially of D960 is profound, slow and harrowing. I find it impossible to listen to any other interpretation of this sonata having heard Richter play here. The whole work, intense and disturbing as it is, is transported to the highest realms of expressive angst, felicity and desperation by the pianist whom Glenn Gould (no slouch himself) described as "the miracle that is Sviatoslav Richter".
This is no easy listen and you may find, once the final bars have faded, that you are emotionally drained by the whole experience. This is music-making of the highest calibre. I have owned this disc for about a year and, having listened to it at least once weekly since, its sheer force and power have not diminished in the slightest.
Richter's best recording. Schubert's best piano works.......2004-10-16
To make this review short and simple. I owned this album for over a year. I didn't love it. The tempos on the B flat Sonata bothered me....a bit slowere than the norm. One day, I was feeling very low and for some reason, I remembered I hadn't listened to this cd in quite some time. I put on the B-flat sonata, and I realized that the reason, it was hard to like is because it is one of the most painful readings of music I've ever heard. I'm certain the intent of the sonata was to display the beauty within pain. Anyway, if that was its intent, this is beyond a realization of that. As for the other sonata, it's played with perfect Richter grace. The sound quality is excellent and any piano listener with a deep need to be emotionally persuaded by the world's finest Schubert interpreter should buy this CD. It's an experience that will last with you. I wish you luck on your purchase

Naxos's previous release of the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge, performing works by Herbert Howells was widely recognized as an outstanding bargain, and rightly so. This latest offering from the same choir is no less impressive. The singing is alert, committed, rhythmically incisive, characterful (most of all in that minor masterpiece, Rejoice in the Lamb), with excellent blend and unanimity, clear and colorful vowels (if occasionally a shade exaggerated), and tremendous reserves of power for dramatic moments--all blessed with an ideal acoustic and superb support from the (assumed) organist Iain Farrington. The many solo parts are for the most part well covered--especially enjoyable is Benedict Giles considering his cat, Jeffrey, in Rejoice in the Lamb. Minor quibbles: Perhaps there is marginally less assurance in the a cappella works, such as A Hymn to the Virgin, and some of the rhythmic articulation in the Missa Brevis is a touch affected. The menu includes such slightly less-well-known works as the Festival Te Deum and the intriguing men-and-angels Antiphon of 1956. All in all, an impressive reminder that Britten was as committed as Howells to the English church music tradition--a fitting vessel for his passionate belief that his art should be "useful." --Andrew Green

"from the hand of the artist inimitable".......2003-08-29
Benjamin Britten adds to the tradition of English choral music with his inventive genius in these lovely pieces, sung so beautifully by the Choir of St. John's College in Cambridge, which consists of 16 choristers and 14 choral students, led since 1991 by Christopher Robinson, and with Iain Farrington on organ.
The first work, "Rejoice the Lamb" was commissioned in 1943, and uses the 18th century poems of Christopher Smart, who was considered insane in his lifetime. The words have a childlike wonder to them, and praise God's creation in everything from flowers to a mouse, who is "a creature of great personal valour"; my favorite is "I will consider my Cat Jeoffrey", and both text and music in this composition are enchanting.
"Te Deum", from 1934, was according to the liner notes the first of Britten's works to be published. "Jubilate Deo" is a short piece from 1961, and "Antiphon" (1956), is one of my favorites, a conversation between men and angels. "Hymn to the Virgin" was composed in 1930, when Britten was only seventeen. "Festival Te Deum" ( 1944) is another terrific selection, melodic and powerful.
"Missa Brevis" (1959), has some outstanding vocal work, and perhaps among all these pieces, shows Britten's creativity at its best, and would be my choice if I could only pick one work from this CD. It is followed by "Hymn to St. Peter" (1955), and "A Hymn of Saint Columba" (1962), and Britten's only piece for organ solo, "Prelude and Fugue on a theme of Vittoria" (1946).
Fitting for Britten, who was born on St. Cecilia's day, the final piece is "Hymn to St. Cecilia". It was written during the early 40s, using the sad, reflective words of W.H. Auden, which are full of conflict, and the final resolution of "Translated daughter, come down and startle, Composing mortals with immortal fire".
This CD is interesting for admirers of Britten, as it spans over three decades of his choral compositions, and the performance is splendid. Recorded in 1999 in St. John's College Chapel, the sound is excellent, and total time 73'48.
outstanding singing at bargain price.......2000-11-25
This is worth paying full price for; it is spirited singing and idiomatic. It is harder to obtain the Howells Requiem and the piece he wrote after President Kennedy's assassination but they are equally beautiful. Naxos have a winner in this choir and they have the entire Englsh choral repertoire ahead of them - hopefully. It is one of those CDs which you keep off the shelf for constant replaying.

Album Description
Artur Schnabel
Complete Piano Sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven
8CD set
Customer Reviews:
The playing is the voice of Beethovan.......2007-02-12
More technically immaculate versions are available, but none convey to you the spirit and temperament of Beethovan as Schnabel did. The slow movements eclipse all those from other players. Any music lover who really wants to know what Beethovan is like must listen to this. As Beethovan's famous saying : " from the heart, it goes to the heart ".
An excellent incarnation of classic recordings.......2005-01-07
Artur Schnabel's seminal interpretations of the Beethoven piano sonatas, recorded between 1932 and 1935, are among the unquestionable classic recordings in the record history. Opinions divide, however, regarding Schnabel's mastery. From a technical point of view, his interpretations are not always clinically accurate. But whatever Schnabel lacks in technical brilliance, his interpretations are perfectly balanced, thoughtful, and moving. If one just wants one set with Beethoven's sonatas, this classic set deserves a serious consideration.
The present Regis incarnation of the old 78s submits Schnabel's interpretations in a clear sound that is remarkably fresh. I have not heard the HMV version, which often is blamed for its bad sound. The monophonic sound in this set, however, is nothing but excellent despite the considerable age of the original recordings.
The only oddity is that Regis has made the pauses between each sonata incredibly short - for economical reasons I suppose. Now the complete sonatas fit on 8 cds in a very slim package. That should of course not prevent you from grabbing this fine set.

Somewhat disappointing.......2007-05-30
We ordered two versions of "Carnival of the Animals" at the same time and this one was a disappointment because the music is meaningless without the wonderful poetry of Ogden Nash. The Boston Pops recording is much better because it does include the brief narrative that introduces each segment.
Apoteosis musical e infantil aventura..........2004-12-05
Fun album of great-sounding music.......2003-05-05
This is a nice contrast; the huge sound of the Saint-Saens organ concerto with E. Power Biggs booming away, and the lovely Carnival of the Animals, perennial kid's favorite. This is a good introduction to classical music for the young listener; after beguiling them with the Swan and the Aquarium and the appealing xylophones in Fossils, you can wallop them by cranking up the stereo and blasting the organ at them. A real hoot for the entire family. Who said classical music has to be boring?
