3 out of 5 stars Blinded by the Lies.......2007-03-12

Anyone giving this five stars must have a seriously pants music collection. The first half of this CD, "Making Contact", is a three-to-four star effort at best, more lightweight in style with a drifting towards American rock. Despite no Schenker on guitar, tracks like "Blinded by a Lie", "Diesel In The Dust", "The Way The Wild Wind Blows", and "When its Time to Rock" are examples that UFO could still cut it with the best.
After this album the band musically disintegrated. Phil Mogg and Paul Raymond were the only remaining members when "Misdemeanor" was produced and Raymond didn't stick around for long after that. This album is "UFO does Duran-Duran" and I can't say that any of the tracks are worth a listen. Cheesy lyrics, bad hair styles, this is really awful. Don't be fooled by the only good point which is the excellent album cover.

If you like Bon Jovi tributes then you might find something here. Unless you are a real UFO fan who must have all their albums then don't bother with this one. Go for the live "Strangers in the Night" or studio wise "Walk on Water" or any of the seventies Schenker albums first which are all real five star efforts! (see my other reviews!).

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Schenker era, but better overall songwriting........2006-05-05

Schenker's distinctive guitar tone, vibrato and excellent palm muting is missing on these releases. With the departure of Schenker the band incorporates much more of a keyboard emphasis. The first thing I want to mention is that I can't understand the cruel reviews that the "Misdemeanor" CD has received. It is really pretty good. First I will comment on "Making Contact", though. This disc includes what I would say is UFO's best post-Schenker hit single. This would be "Blinded by a lie". Other than that there are about two other decent songs and the rest are just so-so. Lyric wise, the songs are a bit more in depth than previous releases with Schenker. For guitar playing, Paul Chapman is no Michael Schenker, though. He is very average when you get down to it. Very little vibrato, average speed, average tone, decent speed on the power chords, but that doesn't take a virtuoso. Any pretty good guitar player can this stuff and even a lot of the stuff Schenker put out, for that matter. On a basic level his work is not that hard, but it's the subtle components that often makes a guitar player's writing special. Chapman never really possessed those attributes in his work.

Next is "Misdemeanor". UFO definitely starts sounding like Bon Jovi here. Mogg is not able to compete in this area and his style of conveying lyrics is quite awkward. Still, none of the songs are really awful. In fact, again, there's about four decent tracks that stand out. But what is most remarkable is the guitar playing that makes this average keyboard-driven pop metal album really attractive. I play guitar but I'm not a good player. Still, I can certainly pick out a guitar great when I hear one. Atomic Tommy M is the guitarist here. This guy is just as good as Schenker. Just fantastic. He doesn't have Schenker's ability to produce those subtle palm mutes and left hand vibrato, but he has some other tricks. Just listen to his hard fast picking and hammer-on/pull-offs. Also, his sense of melody is on par with Schenker, coupled with pinch harmonics and the use of the right hand on the tremolo bar, instead, to obtain a thinner vibrato. Reminds a person a lot of another great Japanese/American guitarist, Jake E. Lee anyone? Don't know where Atomic Tommy went to after his stint in UFO, but I would include him in the same league as Schenker, Rhoads, Malmsteen, Satriani etc. In fact, I read that UFO had considered using the great Yngwie Malmsteen on "Misdemeanor", but opted for Atomic Tommy M guy instead.

4 out of 5 stars great cd.......2004-03-17

First of all i'm a die hard UFO fan,i own EVERY UFO album not just the michael shenker cd's...some of you fools reviewing the ufo albums without michael ..1) do the band a disservice 2)are smokin crack, and 3) are very inept in your musical judgement. While i'm a huge shenker fan he is far from the greatest guitar god,and i hate to break the news to ya's but for overall sound/effect and appeal paul chapmans just good as michael on many a song. That bein said MAKING CONTACT is one of the top five UFO albums MADE!!!! the top five UFO albums any fan should get are (PHENOMENON,LIGHTS OUT,NO PLACE TO RUN,MAKING CONTACT,and WALK ON WATER) along with the two live cd's BBC,and strangers in the night. Misdemeaner has some cool 80's guitar and is an attempt at mainstream(and they deserve to be mainstream) so who can blame them, and some of these songs are pretty cool...IF,I might add if you have an open mind (so that excludes most of you shenker diehards)............

5 out of 5 stars "Making Contact", One of the Greatest Rock Records EVER.......2003-10-20

"Making Contact" is my favorite U.F.O. record, and I think it's one of the greatest Hard Rock records ever recorded. Michael Schenker isn't on it and maybe that's why it sounds so great. I.M.H.O., Michael Schenker's song writing isn't as good as his guitar playing. Yes, great guitar playing is, of course, an essential ingredient for Hard Rock music, BUT so is great SONG WRITING!! The songs on "Making Contact" are INCREDIBLE because of the teaming of Phil Mogg (Vocals) and Neil Carter (Keyboards, Rythem Guitar, Bass Guitar and Vocals) who are credited for 7 of the 10 songs on this album. Melodic, yet still Hard and Powerful, every song ROCKS! Back in 1983 I went to a Talas concert (bassist Billy Sheehan's group before he joined David Lee Roth) and they played "DIESEL IN THE DUST" live, it was killer! So if you're into VERY WELL WRITTEN Melodic Hard Rock Songs, you should make contact with U.F.O.'s "MAKING CONTACT".

1 out of 5 stars WASTE OF TIME.......2001-08-21

UFO, is most cases, is a waste of time after Michael Schenker left. (it's similiar to Marillion without Fish; Black Sabbath without Ozzy; Iron Maiden without Bruce; Aerosmith without Joe Perry, etc, etc, etc). THese albuns here, unfortunately, are no exception to the rule. They are bad, with Mogg writing cheesy lyrics.

      Product Description

When you mix a sound of British Pop and American Rock blended with originality you are at home with the Living Daylyes. ---------- 1 Intro 2 Wake Up Call 3 It's Over 4 Portland 5 Checkerboard 6 Last Word 7 Wish I Never Met You 8 Collide 9 Princess of Insomnia 10 Dream in Colour 11 Manipulation 12 Spin ------------------ Many bands claim to be "all about the song", but few can deliver on that promise to the extent of Living Daylytes. The birth of Living Daylytes results from a need to blow off some creative steam by founders Mat Hammond and Nate Shivers. "We were involved in another project at the time," explains Shivers, "and we both started to write these great songs. Without having an appropriate outlet for them, we got together with our friend and producer, Robbie Watson at his studio to throw them down as demos. At the time we figured that we could come back to them later if need be". It was soon very apparent, however, that they had stumbled upon something special. With the addition of long time friend and bassist Steve Flores and later, following an extensive search, drummer Ralph Barr, a relentless schedule of shows began to prepare for the studio. The result is a finely tuned, high energy rock and roll experience both live and on the Daylytes debut release, "SPIN". "We really wanted to try and capture all the energy and emotion of the live show on this album and I really believe we've been able to do that", says the London-born singer, Hammond, "Nate's guitar work and the way he incorporates it into the song is really exciting for me. Coupled with an outstanding rhythm section, you have the basis for everything you need to write great songs. And that's the most important part. It has to be the song first!"

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Fine IMHO.......2005-07-08

While I don't have a lot of UFO music, infact this album and Force It are the only 2, I find this to be a fine piece of work. The guitar work is supurb. I actually like Chapman's playing better than Schenker's and I've always been a fan of Scorpions (old and really old) and even had MSG's Built to Destroy and Assault Attack albums. Mogg also does a fine job with the vocals. All in all, this album is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Contact !.......2004-07-01

UFO has never had a bad album,& this one from the Chapman era is no exception. From the hard riffing of "Blinded by a Lie" &"Time to Rock " to the beautiful balladry of "You & Me" & "Call my Name".Lush keyboards from Neil Carter + Chapman's underrated guitar make this a great swan song to the Tonka Chapman era of UFO !

2 out of 5 stars A good one to pass on.......2004-03-09

By this time UFO was getting a little too dependent on the keyboards for my tastes. (On the next album they'd get even more dependent, but that's another review.) I always make my decisions about a particular album relative to how many songs I'd pull from it for a home made compilation. With "Making Contact" for the first time I'm sorry to say the answer is none. The disc has an unfortunate layer of hair spray that foreshadows the "hair band" inspired death throes of metal, and while I can't say it completely fails to hold up it's end of the UFO legend, I can't recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars UFO could rock even after Schenker.......2004-01-27

I guess most of us agree that UFO without Michael Schenker is not the same, but when it comes to "Making contact" I can assure you that it's quality rock all the way from the opening "Blinded by a lie" to the closing "Everybody knows". I won't claim that this album is better than the classics from the 1970's but this time UFO sure come close to former heights. I strongly advise you to check out "Making contact" because it's much better than its reputation. With this one, you get melodic hard rock best served loud.

4 out of 5 stars The end of an era..........2003-01-24

Even with all the turmoil going on in UFO at the time they still put out a good album. Pete Way had left the band to form "Waysted". The day was saved by Mr. Chapman who not only handled the lead guitar duties, but also did a SUPERB job playing the bass parts on this album. You can tell it's not Pete Way as the style is very different but it is damn good. This album really kicks butt, Paul Chapman shines on this one. It's too bad he did not continue with the band. He really is a fine guitarist & never got the credit he deserved. Yes this is the last "real" UFO album. If you have not heard it in a while give it another chance. It's really quite good.
