For more than a decade, Tom Morello used earsplitting riffs to make his point, first with Rage Against the Machine, then with Audioslave. But on his solo debut as the Nightwatchman, the man named one of Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists of all time tries a different approach. Taking cues from six-string radicals such as Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash, Morello reinvents himself as a singer-songwriter armed only with an acoustic guitar, gravelly baritone, and renewed political fervor. The lyrics are unavoidably blunt, whether tackling the plight of third world workers or being a member of two of the biggest rock bands of the past two decades: "On the streets of Havana I got hugged and kissed/ At the Playboy Mansion I wasn't on the list," he sings on the title track. The real discovery is that he's capable of making the same old racket at just a fraction of the volume. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

Tom Morello appears as The Nightwatchman on his stark new acoustic album One Man Revolution. These 13 songs create a dark, urgent portrait of a world in turmoil. Morello, the Grammy Award-winning guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, pinpoints the sociopolitical struggles of the American leftist underground in this series of self-penned originals. Brendan O'Brien (Peal Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Incubus, Rage Against the Machine) produces `One Man Revolution,' which is Tom's first time singing on record.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty weak.......2007-07-27

Look I'm not going to smash his guitar playing, it's acoustic and it's meant to be meaningful protest music (not saying you can't have both, but sometimes it's worth the sacrifice). Yeah it's not Rage, but you should have known that when you read "Night Watchman". Now for the attack. The lyrics are poor. I really don't feel like he put a whole lot of work into them. It seems like he's trying harder to rhyme the next word then to add meaning or flow to the song. He also seems like he's trying too hard when he sings. It's my personal opinion, but I suggest borrowing this CD or listening to a few tracks before just picking this up.

4 out of 5 stars Raw.......2007-07-27

It seems that many of these so called "Rage Against The Machine" fans are a little upset that Tom Morello, the searing and amazing guitarist for said band has decided to release a solo album, playing only acoustic guitar protest songs and singing over them in a sort of Dylan/Cash/Springsteen way.
Why? Because he isn't pummeling ear drums with Earth Shattering chords and sounds created via Electric Guitar? Grow up...

Rage Against The Machine was never about "how hard can we get", but rather the message, which seems to get lost in between all the angst filled and "the heavier the better, the more we will rebel" kids of our generation.
It was all about the message, which in my opinion is largely lost among our force fed MTV high consumerism society.
These ain't pop songs kiddies...

I remember in High School, all the kids reveled over "Killing in the Name", mostly due to Zach's freak out at the end of the song. AS if these kids really know anything about what Zach is portraying. All they hear is swear words and lyrics of rebellion, heavy rap/metal and all of a sudden they think their rebels?

Sorry kids, but Tom Morello's One Man Revolution bears the same heaviness and raw grit as did all of Rage Against The Machines albums.
Heaviness and raw grit is a state of mind and more of a feeling than a presence and a sound. Personally, I feel that One Man Revolution hits as hard as anything RATM has ever done.

Each song features Tom's Gruff voice croon about freedom and revolution (what else?), and his guitar, while played only on acoustic, is amazing nonetheless. There are some deep and meaningful lyrics are written by Tom himself. Lyrics no doubt come from the heart.
And the guitar is soft, soothing yet fierce in its intention. One Man revolution reminded me of why I feel that Tom Morello is one of the BEST guitar players alive.

The album comes off as a folk/country sort of feel, but this ain't your daddy's folk! This music could spark a revolution and then some.

4 out of 5 stars One Man Army.......2007-07-23

Armed with his acoustic guitar, Tom Morello found time in between the Audioslave break-up and the Rage Against The Machine reunion to record his very own solo album. Released under the moniker of The Nightwatchman, "One Man Revolution" carries with it a sound that most Morello fans wouldn't expect or recognize. Instead of raging with innovative and recognizable guitar riffs and squealing solos, Morello strums his acoustic guitar and does his best vocal impression of legends like Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. It should go without saying that the material on Tom's debut is of a highly political nature, and it's honestly quite refreshing to hear, as Audioslave seemed to put Tom on hiatus when it came to such subjects. Granted, with Serj Tankian (System Of A Down), he had kept the Axis Of Justice active (which is where he made his solo debut), but it wasn't enough to keep the message and intensity of Rage Against The Machine from being missed. On subjects ranging from racism, poverty and war, Tom Morello delivers his message with confidence, while sounding far more in touch with the problems of today and simply more relevant than the average solo artist (anyone listened to "Carry On" yet?). "One Man Revolution" may not completely hit the mark or meet the expectations of fickle fans, but those with a little patience and an open mind will appreciate what Morello is trying to do here. And even if you don't like his voice, you've still got some great guitar-work to sit back and chew on.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-07-21

This album was extremely well hyped, and turned out to be a huge let down. If you loved Rage Against the Machine, then you will probably hate this album. Everything that you have come to love about his guitar playing with Rage is completely missing on this accoustic album. If you like Leonard Cohen then buy this album. If you don't then don't bother. Don't base your purchase upon Rage Against the Machine.

2 out of 5 stars Stick with the Whammy pedal Tom..............2007-06-28

While the concept behind The Nightwatchman certainly has merit, the execution of this album is not up to the same standard. As a fan of Rage Against the Machine, I was interested to see how this would compare. The guitar playing is mediocre, and the vocals are ridiculous. Tom's singing sounds affected and forced. While Zach de la Rocha spit his venom on the Rage albums, Tom is clearly making a profound effort to whisper his. His voice actually doesn't sound that bad when he's singing naturally, it's the amateurish attempt to channel 'Nebraska'-era Springsteen that's laughable. Overall, this was a real disappointment. This pales in comparison with 'Nebraska', 'Ghost of Tom Joad', or any protest music by Neil Young.

Amazon.com essential recording

The album on which Kraftwerk got serious about their legacy of fusing human flesh and the technology it has inspired into an indistinguishable whole, Man-Machine also ironically embodies some of the band's most endearing contradictions. The case is stated up front with the techno classic "The Robots." The journey continues to worlds both utopian ("Spacelab") and dystopian ("Metropolis"). Then it segues into a bona fide, hook-laden dance track ("The Model," perhaps inspired by the club success that Kraftwerk's previous album, Trans-Europe Express, experienced at the hands of enterprising early mixmaster DJs). There's also a downright sentimental cityscape, "Neon Lights." But lest anyone think that Schneider, Hutter, and company are too human, they wrap up the proceedings with the robotic dance-groove of the title track, inspiring dizzy listeners to ponder: Kraftwerk--men or machines? --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Humans Vs Technology.......2006-11-09

If it wasn't enough with the imense impact previous Kraftwerk albums already had on modern music, "The Man Machine" from 1978 would continue to be a landmark for latter music. It's cold and minimalistic electro-pop sound would infleunce synth-pop artists like Devo and Gary Numan and it would also infleunce New-Romantic artists like Duran Duran, Adam Ant and ABC. The album itself is another concept album but a little divided between two categories. Humans vs Technology and the expanding and highly modern global cities. They now try to imitate the sounds of robots more then ever, with the music and with appearance, the music is structured and minimalistic and forms a somewhat robotic sound, the songs are also shorther and more direct, better suited for single-releases. On liveshows they even acted like robots to not break the bubble. The "Man-Machine" is cold and robotic yet fascinating and extremly modern for it's time. For the reviewer that said this is dated, well it's 28 years old, what do you expect?. Based on the influence it had for others, it's certainly got something in it's sound that is still interesting.

Opener "The Robots" actually got 2 versions, album and single version. I like the single version better that is even more catchy. The song is minimalistic synth pop with dancable rhythm and beats. It also feautures robotic voices, on the video for the song that all appear as robots. This song would also have huge influences for Hip Hop. "Spacelab" deals with new technology and the never ending fascintaion for space flight. It's a dreamy and meliodic electro-pop song, once again with robotic voices. The song sounds a little like OMD's 80's songs. "Metropolis" deals with urbanization and highly modern global cities. In the late 70's we would see many cities in West Germany building sky scrapers and becoming global high-tech cities. This song is also very meliodic with few lyrics and dreamy sound.

"The Model" is the most commercial song ever released by Kraftwerk. It got well penned lyrics in several verses and deals with the endless glamour and luxury of a spoiled Model with very cynical lyrics. Not only it was a prety big hit, it would also be the influence for several synth-pop bands in the early 80's like Human League, Talk Talk and Howard Jones. "Neon-Light" is a wonderful dreamy song once again about global cities. This is the longest song, close to 9 minutes. Closer, is the title track that once again deals with human and robots. It got a hypnotic beat that later was sampled by quite a few hip hop artists. Robotic voices appear but I have no idea what they say. One of their best nonetheless.

Overall, Another fantastic album that would be just as influentual as their previous album "Trans-Europe Express". Kraftwerk sound is polished once again and it becomes more simular to the sound that their upcoming albums would sound like. Minimalistic synth-pop with robotic feautures yet catchy and easily accessable. If you are new to them start with "Europe" and then this one, they are good and easy to get into.

5 out of 5 stars OOH the memories..........2006-09-03

This is probably Kraftwerk's best album ever. Every song was a superhit. Especially, the songs 'Robots' and 'Spacelab' - they used to play these everyday on TV in the morning news and aerobics programs. And this was in the mid 80s when I lived in rural India! Wow, I am engulfed in nostalgia now...

4 out of 5 stars These Boys Look Hot in Lipstick!.......2006-05-30

There-I just had to get that out. Please, with my blessing, enjoy the music on the CD; with Peter Schilling as their successor, Kraftwerk showed the Western world just what a synthesizer could do in the right hands! I'm so glad to see these guys are still around!

Yes, this is one of the best CDs to add to your mod/new wave collection (also pick up Trans-Europe Express, too!), but I tip my hat off to Gunter Frohling for the photos-nothing is more breathtaking than the inside photo with Florian Schneider's gorgeous profile!

5 out of 5 stars Use Caution Operating Heavy Machinery.......2006-02-26

This is an absolute perfect album from one of the most influential groups in the world. Everything from techno to rap to synth pop comes from here. But let's take it a song at a time.
1. The Robots-Kraftwerk's best song. A salute to the world of industry without actually being industrial. When Kraftwerk play this song live, they have mechanical robots made in their image play it "for them".
2.Spacelab-This one doesn't work so well. The cheesey special effects sound like a dated sci fi movie.
3. Metropolis-Good but not quite that interesting.
4. The Model-Hands down classic made even better by Big Black's cover of it.
5. Neon Lights-Kraftwerk's studio was in a seedy red light district so what did they chose to write about? The neon lights of course (what else?). The vocals are too over the top but the music captures a shimmering portrait of a lighted city landscape.
6. The Man Machine-Perhaps their most minimalist song and it works. Turns Philip Glass' Music in Similar Motion into a pop song with teutonic tendencies.

I've heard that reissues are on the way so we'll get to hear even more. Can't wait.

4 out of 5 stars 78' Electronica Album.......2006-01-05

From the 1970 album "Tone Float" to the 2005 "Minimum Maximum" live album,I need to say the 1978 album "Man Machine" was a nice classic in eletronica albums, but it has no real early 70's songs I have never heard like "KLINGKLANG" or "RUCKZUCK".

Speaking of which,it would be nice to have "KLINGKLANG" on the album. But,maybe it should just have the late normal 70's songs would be fine,I guess.

Yeah...if you go back to 78' then it would be "neu".Neu.Get it?The german word for new.Okay?Anyways,I'm too bored to review so it's a good album...I'll talk about the songs nextime.

Everything super-producer Dr. Dre touches turns into the platinum that Juvenile rocks in his grill; white gold, at minimum. Yet, interestingly, Man vs. Machine is an example of what happens when rap's finest talents go superstar collabo-hunting: the magic remains just where it started--on paper. Do Eminem's verbal jabs at Jermaine Dupri on "My Name" add anything to the Xzibit mix? Nope. And is that Dr. Dre producing the beats of a mere mortal on the Nate Dogg-assisted "Multiply"? Absolutely. Conceptually, "Release Date," a provocative first-person look at what goes through a prison inmate's mind just before being discharged, showcases what you'd come to expect from an Xzibit track: rugged beats, even nastier rhymes. However, the track's production by the much-fêted Rockwilder is an afterthought. So clearly, when the X-man sticks to his growling flows over purist beats by DJ Premier ("What a Mess"), or with the similarly gritty M.O.P. ("BK to LA"), the results are splendid. But with Dre and company on board, X seems to lose some of his focus and organic luster. Put in perspective, Xzibit's fourth release is arguably better than most of the West Coast pabulum out this year. However, considering all the star power assembled, this one falls short of expectations. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars X wins against the machine {4 and 1/2 stars}.......2006-11-16

Standout Tracks: RELEASE DATE, SYMPHONY IN X MAJOR, BREAK YOURSELF, HEART OF MAN, THE GAMBLER, HARDER, LOSIN YOUR MIND, BK TO LA(knockout collabo with MOP), MY NAME(X and Em take shots at Jermaine Dupri) and ENEMIES. Filler: Multiply(weak first single plus the remix with Busta Rhymes is better), Choke me spank me pull my hair(classic example of beatwasting), Right On. Standout Tracks on bonus disc: MY LIFE MY WORLD, WHAT A MESS(vintage X to the Z track produced by Premo) and HIT U WHERE IT HURTS. Bottom Line: Dre not executively producing this album was not a bad idea. X's fourth effort gives you X before he got commercialized by Dre. Even though he has some stupid tracks(Right on and Choke me, spank me pull my hair) he has enough solid jams(Break youself, Release date, Losin your mind, BK to LA, The gambler, enemies etc) to keep this one in close range next to your cd player. A definite step up from Restless.

5 out of 5 stars Are we talking about the same cd here!!!???.......2006-05-30

How can anyone not enjoy this album, u guys must be Losin Your Mind. This is definately X's bext album. Every song is somethin new to discover. X is such a incredible rapper. The best songs on this album are Symphony In X Major feat. Dr. Dre, Multply feat. Nate Dogg, Heart Of A Man, Choke Me-Spank Me, Losin Your Mind feat. Snoop Dogg is just a sick song, doesnt get much realer than that, & My Name feat. Eminem & Nate Dogg, which is a classic also. This is a great cd from front to back. X keeps it real, and shows strongly here. Overall I give this album 5 bricketts.

4 out of 5 stars X's worst album.......2006-04-05

This is Xzibit's worst album, which doesn't say much becouse X has yet to make a bad album. I been a fan since Paparazzi got dropped, and was amazed by the awesome lyrics so I bought the album, and have kept buying his album since. Me too I like Xzibit better before the Dre-days, back then he probably was number one alive in my book, now he's just great.
This album is mostly about making your head nod, BUT however the goal get's accomplished and it's highly enjoyable.

People are hating on rappers sampling Toto's Africa, BUT I have yet to hear a bad song using that sample, Xzibit, Nas even Ja Rule made great stuff using that beat, this is probably the best one about struggling to go from boy to man.

The tracklist on Amazon says 19 tracks, my copy only has 16 so this is probably a new version/limited version of the album then... ANYWAYS:

I pretty much like all the songs except for "pull my hair" and "multiply" is not too good neither, X brings out the old X in the great hard Enemies finishing off the album in a great way (again on my 16 track version)

If you call this a bad album: I'll call you a lyer...

3 out of 5 stars Unacceptable...Even By His Standards.......2005-10-30

Is it just me, or has X been going downhill since 2000? I was really hoping that he would do a better job than his "Restless" LP, but I was proven wrong. The problem with this CD is the terrible beats and weak guest appearances.

When I heard "Symphony In X Major" (If you're a Brand Nubian fan, you'll quickly notice the revised title), and "Multiply", I thought that his CD was going to be exceptional. Unfortunately that became misleading, because they're the second and third track, and ironically they were the two lead singles of the CD. After that, it just goes downhill. "Heart Of Man" he tries to regain some momentum he had on previous albums, but it just doesn't come. "Harder" has to be the worst I've heard Ras Kass spit. "Choke Me, Spank Me (Pull My Hair)" has to be an alternate version of "F****n You Right" which appeared on the Restless LP, and you can tell by the title of the song what it means. "BK to LA" which features M.O.P. doesn't sound like a beat that they would do. I'm even dissapointed in Lil Fame and Billy Daze for doing that. I expected a DJ Primier beat or something better. "B**** A** N*****" which comedian Eddie Griffin sucks, because to me its a knock off of "Ed-Ucation" from the Dr. Dre's 2001 Album.

The CD is not all bad though. "My Name" would be considered to somewhat a sequel to "Don't Approach Me" which both featured Eminem. "The Gambler" featuring Anthony Hamilton is somewhat good. "Right On" would be a good track to some people.

There are a couple of points where it's the Xzibit I wanted to hear. The last song "Enemies" reminds me of how he was back on the 40 Dayz...album. The bonus disc would have 3 extra tracks, and one excellent track is the DJ Premier produced "What A Mess". If it was more of tracks like that on the origonal CD, there would be a different reaction, but why is the best song on the bonus disc will remain a question.

As you can see, this is not up to Xzibit's standards. Another thing that dissapointed me was there was not one member of the Likwit Family on this CD. I only recommend this CD if you want to hear somemore of Xzibit's work with Dr. Dre and what not. Otherwise, you should move on to "Weapons Of Mass Destruction" where he pulls himself back together.

Standout tracks: Symphony In X Major, Multiply, My Name, Enemies, What A Mess (Bonus Disc)

I first heard Carptree in 2003. Their brilliant second album entitled Superhero from that year was my album of the year back then, and for good reason.

Man Made Machine is a strong forward leap from Superhero opening up new ground while retaining the catchy, quirkiness and brilliant melodious flavor of SH. The writing is sublime and the playing is extaordinary. And what do you know, the 'No Future Orchestra' from SH had a future afterall, giving solid foundations to the wonderful writing and playing of Carl Westholm and exquisit vocals of Niclas Flink.

The catchy hooks and quirky phrases combined with the Gabrielesque vocals of Niclas Flink remind me of another outstanding 'left of centre' album from 1975. Split Enz: Mental Notes.

All in all, Man Made Machine is brilliant, not instantly accessible but those who persevere will be highly rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!!!.......2007-03-16

Some people are never happy with what comes out for newer metal. You will always have the people who say it's not original and it sounds like everything else, I think these people are the ones who are becoming bored with music all together nowadays. I admit there aren't too many bands out there that grip me start to finish anymore on new releases. This was one of them though. This band has it all going for them: Perfect production, catchy riffs, ability to slow down and still make powerful engaging music that traps the imagination and drives the inner beast to come forth. This is what I look for in music. So many genres of metal out there and I say this is just really good Melodic Death Metal. I am a huge fan of In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Norther, Nightrage.... I could go on forever but again in a lot of those bands few of them have the diverse ability to captivate the listener and keep them interested. This CD keeps me interested. I tried to find it in a store and couldn't even find a store that could order it so I broke down and bought it from here. This is well worth the money and anyone who does not like this album is not a true Melo-death fan. There is not one flaw beginning to end on this album. Buy it you won't be dissapointed!!!!! I promise!!!

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road, so-so, average, etc. .......2006-06-12

I had this album pegged two minutes into the first track. This is what I like to call a guilty pleasure. It does not disappoint in any direct fashion. One Man Army gives us some well-played, head-bangable thrash played like so many others have played it, but with a heavier, more grove-laden twist (which is the only `unique' aspect of this album). The album starts to falter about five tracks in when everything starts to sound the same. Nothing stands out, save for a catchy riff here or a notable drum fill there. Take The Haunted, Nightrage, At The Gates, Forsaken, or a hundred other melodic euro-thrash bands, half the tempo, beef up the mids, and you get this album. Like I said, it's a guilty pleasure. I enjoy driving with it blasting on the stereo, because it never fails to get my head moving (for a few songs, at least). This is the project of the singer from The Crown, the now defunct speed/thrash band that, while not doing anything new (seems to be a trend with these guys) at least were willing to up the ferocity and the edginess of their music. One Man Army, however, has taken the easy path and rehashed the already rehashed. The short and long of this album is that it's boring. It's catchy, it's well produced, it's well performed, but it's boring. I am as guilty as the next person for listening to 'unoriginal' bands but there comes a point when the music is so overdone, so trite and familiar, that I can't go without saying something (arguably 90% of today's metal bands have roots in a small handful of bands playing 10 years ago). If you really, really crave the melodic thrash, as I do, and you need a new band to fill the coffer, pick this up. Otherwise, keep investigating the back catalogues because there are definitely other bands you haven't heard that are doing the same thing better.

5 out of 5 stars Quality thrash/ death metal from ex-crown's members!!!.......2006-06-08

I really like this album, with incredible production. The drums are the particular sound here, reminds me a "Black album" Metallica's era. The rythm section is wayyy good, with a solid solos and technical edge. Also, Johan Lindstran vocals were strong.

1 out of 5 stars .......2006-06-04

And here we have more At The Gates worship in the form of One Man Army and The Undead Quartet (wait, it can't be a quartet since there's five people in the band...). Had this come out 10 years ago, it probably would have created a buzz in the underground. But listening to it in the year 2006, you can't help but think how many times this style of Swedish Death/Thrash Metal has been done to death already. A few interesting solos and the quality drum work is what kept me listening to this, not to mention the crystal clear production that gives the music the room and ambience it needs to flow. Unfortunately, the music is just ordinary. Oh yeah, they have Johan Lindstrand of The Crown on vocals if you're interested.

4 out of 5 stars Corny name, cool cover.......2006-02-25

This is some really good mid-paced thrash. Focus is on the riffs. The singer is from The Crown and does a good job.

Gene Eoddenberry's Andromeda is sirie and OST is the best and took that why is my favorite soundtrack from faverite scifi sirie

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2005-08-23

If you like TV/movie soundtracks, and Andromeda, you should like this. Good Andromeda music, also contains the two different opening themes. (Remember, it is a TV soundtrack so it contains synthesized music.) I enjoy listening to it, and can have it playing in the background at work too without it being bothersome.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack.......2005-02-01

The soundtrack to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is one of the best sci-fi soundtracks to come out in quite a while. I found the music exciting, interesting and intriguing, and on several tracks simply exhilarating; composer Matthew McCauley really does take you on a musical roller-coaster, from the stately High Guard Theme to Dylan's theme to Trance's and Beka's themes to the Nietzschean Attack theme. McCauley musically explores each character, underscoring and enhancing their unique personality. The album has kind of a New Age-ish sound to it on several tracks which gives it a mysterious ethereal quality. A great score for a great series. Composer Matthew McCauley certainly knows his stuff. This is just great music whether or not you're a fan of the show!

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2003-08-08

Great presentation of soundtrack. Interesting instrumentals for even those who are not familiar with the show. I listen to it practically all the time!

5 out of 5 stars A great television score!.......2002-03-27

First off, this is a television soundtrack, not a movie soundtrack-- many of the "instruments" are synthesized. Okay, that aside, this is a great album! It's been a long time since I've heard so many different character themes on a tv soundtrack. From the Heroic "Dylan Hunt", to the brooding "Rev Bem and Magog" music, to the outright ominious "Neitzscheans" themes, this album is a winner. It's nice that the producers also included Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" theme from season 1, which is regrettably no longer used on the show. The music on this album takes you on a emotional roller coaster-- from mysterious, to brooding, to heroic and back again. High recommended for fans of both scores and the television series alike!

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!
