Motley Crue was the ultimate party band of the '80s, and it showed; whenever they tried to get serious, the results were ugly. Dr. Feelgood is good-time heavy rock from start to finish, and that's all it has to be. This album has more hooks than a fisherman's tackle box, from the rip-roaring "Kickstart My Heart," to the groove-oriented title track, to the infectiously funny "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)." Of course, it wouldn't be a Motley Crue album without a heaping dose of raunchiness, as songs like "Slice of Your Pie," "Sticky Sweet," and "She Goes Down" can attest. Definitely the Crue's best album; unfortunately, it's been downhill ever since. --Genevieve Williams

2 out of 5 stars Blah.......2007-04-19

Someone told me that every song but one on this cd was a number one single and sold over a billion copies. He never did prove it but I never believed it. Didnt they start the power ballad? Anyway, this has a few good tracks but really nothing that blows me away. I'll stick to Poison.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Crue!!!.......2006-01-04

This album was recorded with Bob Rock and when the band was sober, and that really comes through in all the songs. Vince, Tommy, Nikki and Mick are all on top of the game. These guys really made a great record. I think in The Dirt, Tommy says that every song ended up as a single. When this album came out, it was #1!! This c.d. is awesome, and if you are a Motley Crue fan, and are sane, you will buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Motley FOOOOLZ.......2005-12-22

Another useless record by a bunch of talentless fools who have been ripping off the teenagers for years. If these guys were asked to make some good music or die, they all would have died years ago.

5 out of 5 stars great classic rock album.......2005-12-08

This should get more play on classic rock radio. Motley Crue had pretty much given up being a mid-80s hairband and had abandoned the whole leather, devil-worship image from the earliest days. Still there's prejudice against the Crue from rock n roll radio for whatever reason.

I remember fondly being 13 years old in 1984 wearing the pentagram Crue tee shirts with my mullet and having people think I was a demonologist. Fun times.

As far as this album goes, it's kind of the Layla of my generation. Pure classic rock. In a league of its own. Beyond mere metal. Still a favorite among strippers. That's about a perfect album.

4 out of 5 stars A new era!.......2005-11-05

Dr. Feelgood was a new era for our heroes. At the time he was doing Dr. Feelgood Nikki Sixx has sober up and, once and still a living illustration of rock n'roll lifestyle, was affraid than the fact to being clean and sober will make him uncool for the fans. Fortunately he was wrong! Dr. Feelgood was their greatest selling album ever. A huge mainstream success, Motley Crue was everywhere! It was so good!

These rock and roll icons allegedly sober up became role models to look up to. For me it was that! Dr. Feelgood is a sight of the time. It showed me than you don't need to be drugged-up and alcoholic to be cool.

Motley Crue are cool and will forever be cool. Sober or not! That's the bottom line!

4 out of 5 stars A great 80s pop-metal album.......2005-10-14

After going on cruse control for most of the decade, Motley Crue pulled it together for what many would consider to be their masterpiece "Dr. Feelgood" (1989).

Newly clean and focused, for their fifth album, the band tapped Bob Rock (Metallica) to produce their new CD.

To many, "Dr. Feelgood" is regarded as the bands finest hour--their crown jewel. And While `Dr. Feelgood" certainly has many strengths; it suffers a few drawbacks as well.

Musically, "Dr. Feelgood" is probably the band's best work since "Shout at the Devil." The band--Vince Neil (vocals), Tommy Lee (drums), Nikki Sixx (Bass) and Mick Mars (Guitar), gave a one hundred percent effort. Unlike the past few records, the band didn't just coast. Their performance and Nikki Sixx's songwriting was top notch.

Nikki Sixx penned a great collection of songs, so when the CD is good, it's very good. There is far less filler on "Dr. Feelgood," then their had been on the Crue's last two albums, "Theatre of Pain" (1985) and "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1987).

Some of the band's best work is on "Dr. Feelgood," like the arena-rock anthems "Dr. Feelgood," "Kickstart My Heart," "Same ol' Situation," and "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)." The album's power ballads "Without You" and "Time for Change" are far more effective and memorable than many of the ballads from the Crue's peers during that era. Even the "filler" songs, ("Slice of Your Pie," "Rattlesnake Shake, "Sticky Sweet," "She Goes Down") between the big singles are effective and keep up the album's momentum. All in all, it's a thoroughly rocking and memorable album.

The album does leave a little to be desired. Even if it is Motley Crue, some of the lyrics, especially "She Goes Down" are pretty dated and cheesy. And although "Dr. Feelgood" contains the band's catchiest collection of songs, the album isn't nearly as edgy or dangerous as the classics "Too Fast For Love" (1981) and "Shout at the Devil" (1983). Be that as it may, "Dr. Feelgood" is still one of the best albums from the late `80s pop-metal genre and is sure to please most fans.

The bonus material is cool to hear, as it shows the songs in progress. The unreleased track, the mid-tempo "Get it for Free" sounds like it would have been well suited for the "Girls, Girls, Girls" album. It's quite cool and should be of interest to most fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Crue at their Creative and Commercial Pinnacle.......2002-11-23

This is Motley Crue's best and most focused album, with Shout and the '94 Corabi album coming in tied for second. After years of shoddy, drug-influenced work with Tom Werman, The boys hooked up with future Metallica producer Bob Rock. They're commitment to sobriety was a long time coming, and with Bob Timmons help, they finally built up the courage to live clean and say nope to dope. This album was recorded around the same time Aerosmith was working on their classic "Pump". In fact both bands studios were right next to each other! On Dr. Feelgood, the production is crisp and clear. The days of partying with chicks and kegs of booze in the studio were over, no more of Nikki being too strung out to play, the Crue finally gave it 110% effort the whole way through the recording process and it paid off. Big time. Their first (and only) album to top the charts. Every song but 1 released as a single. 6 Hit videos on MTV. A Sold-Out world tour played to all corners of the earth. The Metal Edge readers choice award for 1990. An American Music award for favorite Hard Rock album. I could go on & on.

I'll review this song by song (my ratings are in parenthesis)

1.T.nT "Terror 'n Tinseltown)-Nice intro, sets the tone. (5/5)

2.Dr. Feelgood-The infamous title track, features an excellent Tommy Lee back beat, clever lyrics. I Like Mick Mars demonic voice at the end. (5/5)

3.Slice of your Pie-Has a great blues influence, Steven Tyler co-arranged it. (4/5)

4.Rattlesnake shake-Rollicking mainframe, with a full horn and piano section. Vince Neil is in fine form vocally. (5/5)

5.Kickstart my heart-A top ten hit, Heavy riff, excellent slowed down bridge, and a kick-ass Tommy Lee drum solo to finish it off. The video was a blistering, in-your-face performance. (5/5)

6.Without You-Motley's second best ballad besides "Home sweet home". It's very deep and sentimental, heart-felt. (5/5)

7.Same ol' Situation-Nikki Sixx plays a nice bass line, tells an interesting story. I loved the video back in the day, Motley were at the top of the mountain, music-wise and commercially.
This song, along with Dr. Dre's "Next episode" played in my head while in line for my last paycheck of Summer 2000. (5/5)

8.Sticky Sweet-Top notch musicianship. Takes me back to September 1990 when I got my new bike. (5/5)

9.She Goes Down-Packed with sass, raunch and a chugging backbeat towards the end. (5/5)

10.Don't go away mad (Just go away)-Yet another megahit, it's a power rocker, with a catchy chorus. The coda is terrific. the video sort of foretells the internal conflict and tensions that arose in early 1992. (5/5)

11.Time for a change-A perfect closer. It's socially aware with relevant lyrics. And the chorus sounds like a choir singing. The only downside I can think of is in the title, The band is talking about change. Unfortunately the wrong kind happened, 2 years later in the Fall of '91. Music changed big time. Grunge exploded out of nowhere and bands like the Crue fell out of favor. It was the end of an era. The reign of the Hair Bands ended overnight. That said this track is still a 5/5.

If you don't own this album yet you're in luck. In 1999 the band acquired their back catalog and Master tapes from Elektra and started their own label called Motley records/Beyond. Their previous albums were re-issued under the Crucial Crue series, it's fitting that this was their best album, because it's also the best of the re-releases.

There's new liner notes pertaining to info on selected songs, and Demo versions of songs as well as unreleased tracks. The title cut has different words and it's an interesting listen. You can hear what's missing and in turn corrected on the final songs.

The demos for "Without You" and "Kickstart my heart" don't pack quite the punch of their album counterparts, all things considered, they're still pretty decent as is.

The unreleased track "Get it for free" Is good, but it seems more fit for the Girls, Girls, Girls album. It would have seemed out of place on Feelgood. It makes sense to me why it was left off.

My review is a bit lengthy, but by now you get the point. Don't miss out on this Rock-N-Roll classic. As I said before, It's Motley Crue at their creative and commercial pinnacle.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Crue!!!.......2002-09-11

DR FEELGOOD is the biggest album in MOTLEY CRUE'S collection. This album has it all, sex drugs and rock n roll. The band cleaned up their act, got straight and put out their best album yet. If I can remember, I think almost every song was released as a single back in the day. This album has some great rock songs that will forever be played on rock radio, DR FEELGOOD, KICKSTART MY HEART, S.O.S, DONT GO AWAY MAD, WITHOUT YOU. The less played songs here like SHE GOES DOWN, TIME FOR A CHANGE, STICKY SWEET, SLICE OF YOUR PIE are songs that the listener should give a listen to also. The musicianship on this album is top notch. Tommy laying down some furious beats on the drums, Mick just giving us some killer riffs on guitar, Nikki really worte some great songs for this on and Vince sounded really good on this one. The unreleased material is good also. So all in all I think that this is an album worthy of being added to your collection

4 out of 5 stars COOL CRUE.......2002-07-22

I've never been a Motley Crue fan in particular (I can't even remember how I bought this album) but Dr Feelgood is the band's tour-de-force...and is an excellent introduction to Motley Crue.

Although the band's image is a ruff and tuff party band, this album is in fact, extremely well-produced. The riffs are chunky; the melodies are sweet and the playing is tight. This is as ultimate rock as it gets. Dr Feelgood has a drive and verve that hasn't been matched since, and deservedly sold loads of copies. It's hard to explain why some albums hit the sweet spot more than others, but this one does with an array of tracks..."Kickstart My Heart" is a great song, and a personal favourite of mine. Motley Crue is perhaps somewhat underrated against their other rock peers but they transcended for a time above a crowded field. This shows the band's songwriting and rhythmic skills at their peak. Take it from a non-diehard crue fan. If rock is your forte, you'll have fun with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but close.......2002-07-06

In 1989, Motley Crue put out a very good album in Dr. Feelgood. Overall, it's not nearly as good as 1987's "Girls Girls Girls", but Mick Mars' playing is better on this than on any of their other albums. Almost all the songs are good on this album, the best being the title track, S.O.S, and Kickstart My Heart. For some reason, out of two ballads on this album, the bad one was the hit single. "Without You" is nowhere near as good as "Time for Change". W/O U drags on and is uninteresting while Change has a good guitar solo, a good melody, and better than usual vocals. If you've got several Crue albums, buy this. If you haven't purchased any Motley Crue albums before, don't start with this one. Get "Girls Girls Girls" first. It's much better than this, but this is a close second.

Dr. Feelgood paved the way for punk rock. With their high energy, simple, straight forward rock and roll, they made it easier for punk to happen. Down by the Jetty is their debut album; it is a classic. The lead singer, the late Lee Brilleaux, growled his way through these tracks. Lead Guitarist Wilko Johnson is a musical descendant of John Lee Hooker. In addition to the originals, there are top notch versions of the Coasters' "I'm a Hog for You, Baby" and "Bonie Moronie". If you like it fast, good and simple, then this is the cd for you. If you can't dig it, then check your pulse 'cos you're dead!

    4 out of 5 stars Live Feelgood.......2007-08-02

The LP did already not sound THAT good back then. However this is probably the best place to start if you want to explore classic Dr Feelgood. Indeed, the band is very very tight. Wiko Jonhson's guitar plaing is excellent. Back in the 80's this was considered their best album, probably because the Lp's could not capture their live power.

4 out of 5 stars A let down from the LP sound.......2007-02-25

First off, buy Dr. Feelgood. What a fine Rock and Roll band. Perhaps, no better. The sound on this CD is too thin. Maybe I'm used to the vinyl issue. Might be I'm the wrong guy reviewing this, as I regard Dr. Feelgood to be as important as Little Richard and Chuck Berry. I've seen them all, and Dr.Feelgood stands with them all. I'd suggest "Down By The Jetty" and "Be Seeing You".

This i s the re-issue of the first album by Dr Feelgood. I remember buying it aroung 1980-82 or so. I had bought the great case of teh shakes and this was supposed to be their classic (it does contain Roxette). I returned it to Divertimento. Now having grown accustomed to Wilko Johnson's guiter playing I mus reappraise this record. The quality of the recording is probably what did not please me and this is explained in the liner notes, where they explain that they wanted a more raw sound. There is a second CD filled with bonus material. The bonus material sounds better because it contains real stereo mixes with a better separation of instruments. On tese versions you can hear better Wiko's great playing. While it has aged overall and I personally think they have done better stuff it is a decent pu rock record.

4 out of 5 stars The BEST Party Album Ever.......2006-07-05

No frills pub R&B that Dr Feelgood turned into an art form ... I was lucky enough to see them live and the whole pub went off! This compilation is as good as you could hope and well represents the Feelgood era. Even if you've never heard of Dr Feelgood, you (and everyone else) will have heard many of these songs that no-one can resist singing along to. Like I said ... the BEST party album EVER!

    4 out of 5 stars A great Dr Feelgood-collection.......2003-04-26

Dr Feelgood was (is) a bar band. A pub rock band. They played short, unpretentious rock songs, muscular and melodious R&B loaded with crunching guitar riffs...you must've heard their renditions of "See You Later, Alligator" and "Violent Love".

These forty tracks are really everything that the casual Feelgood fan needs. "Roxette" is here, as is "Keep It Out Of Sight", "No Mo Do Yakamo", "Sugar Turns To Alcohol", "Milk & Alcohol" and every other well-known song, including four from the post-Brilleaux album "On The Road Again".
Not every song may be of the caliber of "Roxette" or the other classic hits, but there is nothing bad on here either.

I'm sure that dedicated fans can find a couple of worthy album tracks missing (like "I'm A Hog For You Baby"), but this is really a very good and thorough compilation, and should satisfy almost everyone.
You really should get the live "Stupidity" as well, though.

This cd compiles three live shows that Dr. Feelgood did for the BBC. All feature original guitarist Wilko Johnson, who was the chief song writer and driving force behind the Feelgoods at this point. The high point of this recording is "She Does It Right", a lost classic. Worth whatever the price is.

    4 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2000-11-14

First heard Dr. Feelgood in 1993 in Hamburg and liked the music. Seven years later I had an itch to hear Milk and Alcohol. Ordered Singles and really enjoyed it. Funny thing was I recognized several of the songs. Turns out an old favorite local band of mine used to cover some of their songs and I never knew it - She's A Wind Up, As Long As the Price Is Right, and Put Him out of Your Mind. I have always been a big Nick Lowe and Dave Edmonds fan and you can hear their influence on some of the songs. I definitely recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Pub Rock Band Ever, Or Maybe Just the Greatest..........2007-02-16

When I first saw the cover of this LP back in 1975, it was an advertisement in CREEM magazine. The ripples of what this band did not only helped launch the entire PUNK movement, but remains almost an excusive British product. Wilko Johnson's start (actually this is the 2ND LP, after the MONO DOWN AT THE JETTY) as a world class guitarist is cemented here in various songs that echo his hero, Mick Green of the PIRATES. Even lead singer Lee B. adds killer slide. And who could ask for a better bass/drum combo to back you? So...I bought this LP and fell in love. Now I own most of the reissued CDs and they all sound great. Many parties I have had included slapping on this CD and always had the effect of folks asking Who Is This? Should be in every serious rawk collection...

5 out of 5 stars Thank you John Milroy !.......2005-11-22
