Album Description
2001 album from Finnish act promises fast & furious goth/death metal. Spinefarm Records. Phduk.2006
Customer Reviews:
They decided to stick with melody on this one.......2005-05-27
Their 2000 Chaotic Beauty album sounded EXACTLY like something Kalmah produces. The vocalist sounds exactly like the Kalmah vocalist (and no I don't mean Bodom or Norther, etc.). However, in this album, there is such a clear difference in the band's music. The keyboards stick out beautifully and actually sounds like something like a piano rather than used in accordance with a guitar solo. This album is art, and ultimately shows that death has its melodic moments.
amazing melodic and atmospheric death metal!.......2003-10-06
This band might be hard to accept by many as death metal. This is so soft and so slow that you'll think you're listening to some wacked out melodic metal, or maybe even softer doom metal. To start off with, I can think of 2 bands to make a comparison to. The drums on this CD remind me almost identically to that of Nightwish's on their CD "Over the Hills and Far Away". Earlier today, I was listening to a band on my to-buy list by the name of Kalmah. They are a brutal black metal band, but their keys and I think drums, also, reminded me of these guys. So if you are familiar with either of those bands, you have a head start on what this Finnish death metal wonder sounds like.
One other "band comparison" thing I can tell you is that they do a cover of an Accept song, "Sick, Dirty, and Mean", as track 7 on this CD. They've made it another beautiful song to compliment the others on this CD. That reminds me... don't let the name of the CD bother you - there's not a single swear on the entire CD nor is there any mention of rape or anything. It's really a very clean CD, except for the vocals. Actually, at the beginning of tracks 4 and 5, there is a normal singer singing, kind of like a Sonata Arctica voice. I've already said that the drums are among the cleanest sounding you'll ever find... Oh yeah... Track 6 has the same melody that the Nightwish song "She is My Sin" has. Or at least it reminds me of that song.
Now here's the stunner: Track 5 would generally be classified as a ballad. All you brutal-death metal fans have just got to be going WHAT?!?!?! It's that slow and soft. It is also one of the 2 songs that start off with a normal vocalist.
Let's see... ... judging by this information, can you figure out why it is so hard to find a CD by these guys?! If you can find one of their CDs, probably their newest one, whatever that may be depending on whenever you read this, get that one instead. I bet Eternal Tears of Sorrow will always release CDs better than the last. They are softer than Skyfire, Norther, and even Children of Bodom.
Did this review help you? If it did, say so! Then check out my other reviews. Lately, I've been reviewing mostly death and black metal CDs, but I should get to some melodic metal soon. One more thing... ... get this CD!
An Amazing Masterpiece.......2003-05-08
A totally great example of how melodic death metal should sound like: agressive, furious, yet with excellent music: amazing guitar solos and rifs, easy-understandable, but brilliand mellody.
If you love band like In Flames and At The Gates I guarrantie you you won't regret buying it.
The best songs in the album: Heart Of Wilderness, Prophetian, Fall Of Man, Blood Of Harted.
Enjoy!

Disappointing follow-up.......1999-04-04
When I first heard the Virgin-Whore Complex release, "Stay Away from my Mother" I was absolutely hooked. I'm a college student and my friends and I would sit in the room and sing along with songs like "Anyway" "Discovered" "Revolver" or "Wise and Mighty Emperor". Such biting lyrics about homophobics and religious fanatics and narcissistic rockers. "Succumb" is extremely disappointing. In a sense, the band did seem to "succumb." The songs here lack the biting, offensive lyrics and seem to lack a lot of intelligence as well. The musicality has gone downhill with everything else. If you ever have the chance to buy "Stay Away from my Mother" (at this point, you have to write a letter to Emperor Norton to do so) you should definitely do so. And if you love it, you probably won't like "Succumb" too much.
"Succumb": 13 Brilliant Songs by the Virgin-Whore Complex.......1999-01-17
The Virgin-Whore Complex itself remains a mystery to me and many of its fans; what exactly can one make of a band that reportedly believes that live performances are an anachronism and shuns the press? This, however, is known: Spats Ransom, Deb Fox, and Charlie Fulton are diverse personalities who can write beautifully melodic, intelligent music, as can be seen on their two Emperor Norton releases, "Stay Away From My Mother" and "Succumb". The band tends to write their best songs as if they were short films about the lives of their subjects, human beings whose painful or problematic lives show us the harsh reality of earthly existence. The stand-out, very pop-ish tracks on the album would have to be "Cool Brunette", sung by Fox, "Casey", sung by Fulton, and "Unrequited Love", sung by Ransom. The first, whose subject is a beautiful cigarette-smoking musician who is ultimately betrayed by the nicotine that gave her the strength to live her glamorous life, might just be the most clever song I've heard in my life. "Casey", a rather quiet piano piece, focuses upon a speed-taking, burned-out truck driver who finds himself unable to escape his disappointing and deteriorating life. "Unrequited Love", an energetic journey through the world of love, confusion, and muted guitars, would probably be a great choice for college radio airplay. In addition to these, the tracks in between provide plenty of stimulation for the ears. From the acoustic quietude of Ransom's "Succumb" to the bizarre tale of displaced and distraught extra-terrestrials (or perhaps dillusional religious cultists?) on Fox's "Lullaby", this disc will both engage your mind and keep your body movin' every time you spin it.

Customer Reviews:
Eternal Tears Losing its edge?.......2001-12-28
Eternal tears of sorrow is a great Melodic Death Metal band. Their 1997 album Sinners Serenade is my personal favorite. Everything up to this album has been in a raw yet melodic style. This album incorporates influences of Black Metal and Death metal. The excessive keyboardwork really ruins the fun of the songs. In someways the keyboarding sounds like Children of Bodom. Overall this album was decent, the older stuff is better without a doubt. The side project of this band is Kalmah, the two sound somwhat similar but if I had to pick, I'd get Kalmahs Svamplord over this. It's mixed much better and just sounds complete compared to this.
