Forgotten Hard Rock Album.......2006-03-03
This band totally slipped by me in the 80's, so when I ran across Zoom Club's reissue of Shogun's debut album, I picked it up right away. Given the band photo, and the fact that the album was originally released in 1986, I was expecting the basic melodic hair metal that was so popular at the time. That's not too far off the mark, but the band doesn't seem to have the same pop sensibilities that made Bon Jovi and Poison household names. Shogun's music is melodic, but not overly so, and they rock pretty hard, but aren't firmly a metal band. They're probably closer to Y&T and early Dokken than anything else. The album has the obligatory ballad "Time Will Tell", but it doesn't work very well. The band is at its best when it is rocking hard, so "Too Late for the Hunter", "TV Hero", and "Tokyo Girl" are some of the album's better moments. The final track is a cover of the Amen Corner's "High in the Sky", which works surprisingly well as a hard rock song.
Shogun was a good melodic hard rock band, but you can see why they didn't necessarily set the world on fire. Still, the album is worth owning if you're into this kind of music. The style may sound a bit dated, but the remastering makes it sound like it was recorded yesterday.
Shogun released one other album, 1987's 31 Days, which is scheduled to be released on CD for the first time later this year.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite metal albums EVER.......2004-05-31
There aren't really the words to describe how mind-bendingly amazing this CD is, but I'll give you a few anyway. First of all, the guitar playing is out of this world. I don't think I've heard better guitars on any album. The vocals are growled with enough passion and energy to make even the most skeptical metalhead stand up and take notice. But the band brings more to the table than just the usual hardcore/metal formula of recycled Iron Maiden riffs and hardcore growls: they also incorporate elements of classical guitar, jazz (not so much on this disc), and even some moments of pop punk (there's one part in there...you'll find it). If you want to play the old game of naming similar bands, here goes: imagine Burnt By the Sun playing intricate, techincally-adept, soaring guitar solos. Or, you could picture Dissection with a metalcore twist. Or you could just buy the freaking CD.
Holy Duke Chamber!!!This CD is AMAZING!!!.......2002-06-27
Shogun is by far the sweetest, most rockin Hardcore/Metal/classical band I have ever heard. I have been going to their shows in Boulder, Denver, Conifer and Evergreen for a long time. My hardcore band opened for them a few times, but we sucked. anyway, everything about this CD rocks. they are extremely together like no other music I have heard besides the dillinger escape plan, but shogun's music is better anyway. the Drumming is incredible, the guitar work is mind boggling, and the screaming is really sweet. the songs are well written, recorded, and executed. they mix classical background with off time, really heavy sweetness and riffs that took me 4 months to figure out... if you get a chance ever, also pick up their ep's "Everything I love..." and "What sin has Twisted" . there are a lot of amazing HC and metal bands, Iron Maiden, Children of Bodom, Taken, Atreyu, Cave In, to mention a few, but this Boulder quintet takes the cake, I'm not even kidding you. Seeing them live is another experience all together-AMAZING. but that wont happen any time soon unless a reunion tour is in stock. words cant express how cool this band is. just do whatever it takes to buy this. thank you.

Customer Reviews:
Don't even bother..........2006-09-28
This is not only, by far, the absolute worst Stormwitch album, but probably some of the most awful music ever recorded. It sounds like they weren't even trying. The music lacks the fire and the passion of their melodic 80's power metal opuses, and it doesn't move or inspire me at all. It sounds like they were trying to imitate the late expermintal, jazzy Led Zeppelin sound, but they are very bad at it. There is even a song in which they tried to incorporate the Spanish Flamenco sound... STORMWITCH DOING FLAMENCO?!?!?! yeah... pretty lame. This disc is absolutely useless to me, so don't make the same mistake. Save your money for "Beauty and the Beast" and "Stronger than Heaven".
Strange.......2006-07-04
Word of warning, this album does not sound like other stormwitch releases. This is experimental and rather odd, poppy art school rock. Nothing to do with the great heavy rock classics they made in 80's, nor even melodic power metal of their later releases. So if you are into raw heavy rock try Stronger than heaven or Tales of terror instead, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
My Favorite Band.......2000-06-28
This album is by far the most intense and original album of this century. It makes me ecstatic to see such wonderful musicians creating such wonderful music. I still can't understands why this band hasn't acheived commercial success, perhaps it's because most people couldn't handle such raw and emotional music. I think anyone who hasn't heard this, or any other Stormwitch album has lived a sad and sheltered life. STORMWITCH ROCKS!
