Superb... as usual.......2004-05-03
I rate Principles of Pain a 9/10. Elegy's previous release Forbidden Fruit is a 10 Plus, a truly amazing production, so that's maybe the reason why other fans may have felt this as a let down. This is an unfortunate thought because Principles has many incredible things to offer. Like most prog power-metal bands Elegy's musicianship is surreal, although in a league of their own and with a different brand. It shows they concentrate on quality and substance. But what makes Elegy so special is the way their message is conveyed. The lyrics are not that complicated, yet full of real life significance. The drum rhythmic patterns, creativity and overall structure is beyond belief. Guitarist Patrick Rondat did an incredible job replacing original fretboard master Henk van der Laars. Ian Parry is very strong, always able to sing over complex musical structures and still come out with strong and soulful vocals. The music was written by all members: Rondat (3), bassist Martin Helmantel (5), Ian Parry (3) and all lyrics, and Bruinenberg (1).Although I haven't heard any official information regarding its separation, sadly I'm almost certain this is Elegy's final CD. Singer and lyricist extraordinaire Ian Parry and drum master Dirk Bruinenberg are already involved in other very interesting bands (Consortium Project and Adagio). After listening to many bands in the genre, I consider Elegy to be very unique and special. A different band with its own special sound and style. Definitely one of the best!
Gah! What happened???.......2003-09-27
Wow, what a disapointment after the awesome Forbidden Fruit. Yeah the musicianship is excellent but what I liked about Elegy before was that the skillful playing supported great songs. That's what separated them from many other prog-metal bands. But this cd is just a collection of odd riffs strung together while the singer tries desperately (and fails) to find some semblance of melody. Singing over polyrhythmic music is an underrated skill and here is an example of what happens when it doesn't work.
The problem is obviously the absence of former guitarist Henk Van Der Lars. Patrick Rondat has great chops and technique but he can't write songs. This was hidden on Forbidden Fruit by the fact that most of the songs were written by Van Der Lars.
Well apparently drummer Dirk Bruinenberg has quit the band. He's no fool. These guys are done.
