5 out of 5 stars Complete your 'Tide Collection!.......2005-09-30

This is a great EP from Silvertide. It includes my favorite song from the Show & Tell album, "Mary Jayne," as well as another strong song "To See Where I Hide." But the real reason to buy this one is to get the second track "Beware," which wasn't included on the album. This is another great song, but they had to cut something from the album, and this song was it. This is a MUST for any hardcore fan, but the EP is also a nice starting point if you haven't heard Silvertide and want to give the band a chance without paying the full album price. Either way, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-08-07

this is the first CD by this super new band Silvertide. these guys are from Philly, and have been touring for about 2 years now. being that I'm not into "guitar jargon", I'll just say that I love this album. It contains 3 songs, Mary Jane, To See Where I Hide, and Beware. The first two, altho slightly different versions, are on the full length CD, Show and Tell.
Their style of music is reminiscent of Black Crowes......loose, bluesy rock and roll. Nick Perri plays lead guitar, Mark Melchiorre Jr, on rhythm, Walt Lafty, vocals, Brian Weaver - bass, and Kevin Frank on drums. If you can see them live, you will love them. This is a must for all Silvertide lovers and a must for those who want to hear pure rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars rock and roll is alive.......2005-05-05

I saw these guys open from alterbridge and I was blown away. Silvertide is the second coming of rock and roll. Inspired by AC/DC and bands alike, these guys rock. Hinkle I challenge you to explain what rock and roll is all about, and since you don't know the answer, look to silvertide. Silvertide is Guns N Roses, Van Halen. They are Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. They are the Black Crowes and AC/DC. They are the up and coming gods of rock and roll. Its ok if you dont believe it, you'll just get left behind. Rock on Silvertide. Buy this CD it will give you a taste of something we all thought was lost forever

5 out of 5 stars It's about time........2005-02-26

Well, just when I thought rock and roll was dead, Silvertide was born. I don't mean the band, I mean the guys IN the band. Rock and roll has sucked for over twenty years, and hip hop is such ridiculous, silly garbage I don't even want to think about it. I gotta thank these young rockers for helping to save music. I saw them live when they opened for The Donnas, and Silvertide humiliated those broads. I mean, The Donnas actually dedicated a song to Silvertide! The Donnas were curt and nasty onstage -- as if that makes them real "punkers" or something -- and they made some insulting comments about how put out they were because the show I saw was outdoors and free admission. Meanwhile, Silvertide went beserk onstage. These guys just ripped the sh*t out of the place. There were actually a couple of dipsh*t teenagers in front of me with the hip hop baggy flood pants, retard hat, pubic hair goatee, and the whole uniform on, and they were holding their ears and complaining about how loud Silvertide was. My wife and I couldn't stop laughing. Oh well, most kids are morons. The saying used to go, "Don't trust anyone over 30." Now, it's "Don't trust anyone under 40."

If you like hard rock, and you have a little bit of attitude left, buy this CD, and buy "Show And tell", also. Silvertide is phenomenal. Looking forward to their next CD already! And, by the way, the guy from Germany is right: M. Hinkle is a douche. Silvertide is, in M. Hinkle's mutilated words, "unworthley" (Jesus...How sad) of Van Halen. Why, then, did Sammy Hagar lend Silvertide a huge tour bus to use on their last tour of The United States. I saw it with my own eyes. This guy is a dip, and he's obviously very young and stupid. Who else but a snot-nosed kid would sign his review with "Peace".

5 out of 5 stars Huge Promise!.......2005-01-29

It's increasingly rare to hear a new band and actually get excited about their future output. But this 3-song set from Silvertide goes by way too fast. Comparisons to Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin are not overstating their promise. Throw away all the new-fangled "rock 'n' roll revival" bands and just hang on to this gem. I'm sure it's only the tip of the iceberg. Let's just hope rock 'n' roll excess won't ruin them...

This is a seminal electronic album that no-one should be without. This version includes the track Rubber West, which as far as I am aware has not been available since the original cassette pressing, and also various very hard to come by 12's, most notably Pumping Velvet, which is nothing less than a rare dancefloor classic. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars the beat metal band......ever.......2006-11-06

if you want real slow, fat sludgy metal ... this is it.Kirk is the best frontman ever and after all these years he still can come up with the most
brutal riff on this earth. All songs is solide, listen to the 1st song and the 5th one back to back and you could go throught brick wall.Been a fan
since 92 and cant get enought. They are finaly coming out with a dvd in 2007.Recomend ODD FELLOW REST, these are the 2 best albums (even if all the albums is worth buying) Go ahead, buy this...

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Riffs, You've Come To The Right Place.......2005-05-08

As soon as the mammoth "The Lasting Dose" kicks in, this Album by Crowbar, "Sonic Excess In It's Purest Form", will leave you wanting to listen to it again and again. This Album, i think, is up there easily with their debut "Crowbar", "Equilibrium" and also their latest release "Lifesblood For The Downtrodden". This CD is one of their heaviest, yet still melodic, Albums to date. With extremely strong vocals by Kirk Windstein, Crowbar follow up from "Equilibrium" with a devastating display of power.

Like some other Crowbar Albums, there is an acoustic/instrumental song by the name of "In Times of Sorrow" on this CD. With the rest of the Album being extremely heavy and brutal, this adds a break inbetween the powerful riffage and it sounds very well done. "Failure To Delay Gratification" is almost a throwback to the old days of Crowbar, when they almost made Hardcore music but fused it with sludgey riffs that just have defined what Crowbar is about. This song is probably the fastest sounding song on this Album (At least at the start of the song), but slows down after about a minute, and delves into a slow riff that carries on pretty much until the end of the song and leads into "Empty Room", the dramatic almost epic and massive-sounding finisher, perfectly.

"Awakening" is almost in the same vein as "Failure To Delay Gratification", starting off pretty fast then slowing down into Crowbar's trademark extremely-heavy sludgey-riffing. I think "Counting Daze", "To Build A Mountain" and "The Lasting Dose" showcase Crowbar's sound perfectly. Those 3 songs are probably the heaviest on this Album, but the whole Album as a whole is one heavy beast.

My favourite songs would be "The Lasting Dose", "To Build A Mountain", "Thru The Ashes (I've Watched You Burn)", "Repulsion In It's Splendid Beauty", "Counting Daze", "In Times of Sorrow", "Failure To Delay Gratification" and "Empty Room". I think "It Pours From Me" and "Suffering Brings Wisdom" are extremely good too, and add alot to the overall tremendous heaviness to this Album.

If you like Crowbar, but haven't yet picked this up for whatever reason..Don't miss out on this Album. This Album is one of their most heaviest, melodic, mature and intense Albums to date. You just can't be disappointed in it. To new fans of Crowbar, i seriously suggest you try this first. I think this Album is a great way to get into this talented band, and you'll be hooked from then on. This Album is definitely 5/5.

4 out of 5 stars History of Heavy.......2004-07-18

In 1968, Blue Cheer was the heaviest band on earth. In 1970, Black Sabbath dethroned them. In 1985, Pentagram dethroned Sabbath, but in 1986, Pentagram abdicated the throne of the heaviest band on earth and Candlemass acended the throne. Their reign lasted until 1992 when Crowbar invaded the heavy metal scene. To this day no one has been able to conquer or subdue these sludgey, doomed juggernauts. they are ultimately slow and HEAVY, brain-crushingly so. If you do not like slow and heavy, Crowbar will crush you. If you are strong enough to aproach the throne through such gravity, then you will be rewarded with killer heavy metal!

4 out of 5 stars Dependable sludge metal effort.......2004-02-11

Is it possible that, contrary to popular belief, CROWBAR are actually advancing themselves musically, album by album, though by infinitesimal degrees of the sort that are as impossible to chart on a human scale as Darwinian evolution? The skeletal dirges that litter the band's back pages may eventually line up end to end in a fashion that sees their Neanderthal primitiveness stand erect, though it may also take several generations of their trudging anti-thrash before any such aimless second guessing can be confirmed. Regardless, this latest baby step forward is yet another dreamlike state of sleepy aggression, mired hopes and veiled fragility, quite a far cry from the bratty rage of the korn generation (whose Jonathan Davis has a lower vocal register akin to Kirk Windstein's most reaching falsetto). Once again CROWBAR achieve a kind of beauty belied by the bared and ink stained guts spilling out over the CD booklet. In film and in print, we like our demons to be personified in incendiary plot devices which inevitably result in either an explosion or an exorcism of the soul. The ten year tenure of this New Orleans quartet has never made it that easy. It's in a slower, simmering manner that CROWBAR plies our wounds, choosing to reopen the same scrapes and blisters over and over again rather than struggle vainly to inflict that mortal blow, as so many ragemongers of the day seek to accomplish. In this, they manage to convey the haunting doubt that plagues our subconscious long after the momentary tantrum subsides.

4 out of 5 stars Sludgy........2002-10-30

Kirk Windstein can come up with some of the coolest riffs out there. That's what I like about sludge- the riffs. This is slower than what I usually listen to but the heaviness is there. At times, these guys almost remind me of Pantera. "Awakening" is the best song here.

    4 out of 5 stars A Minor Triumph!.......2007-07-08

This Triumph post-Emmett release has gotten a lot of bad press over the years, most of it unjustified. It's a decent Triumph album, about on par with Never Surrender. Listenable with a couple of stand-out tracks -- It's Over (classic Triumph), Somewhere Tonight and Boy's Night Out, a dynamite rocker with a guitar solo as hot as anything Emmett ever did.

It's too bad poor fan reaction to this album caused Levine and Moore to close shop; this post-Surveillance release (I consider Surveillance their best album and am a fan of the band's post-Allied Forces releases) shows Triumph still had good music to make and maybe another classic album or two. Now, of course, we'll never know. We do know that Emmett has forsaken Rock for pedestrian rock-fusion and jazz...

For a last ride on the Triumph bandwagon give Edge of Excess a spin!

    John

    4 out of 5 stars Triumphant Again!!.......2005-12-16

I have to admit that when I bought this CD back in 1992, I did not like it. But just the other day I was listening to it again. Now I love it. I don't know if it was time or just my music taste changed but I am glad that I have the CD. Standouts are: It's Over, Turn My Back On Love, Somewhere Tonight & Child Of The City. Do not pass this CD off because of the bad reviews. It really is very good.

4 out of 5 stars Not all that bad.......2005-09-15

I have to disagree with these other reviewers about this album. To me, it is about average for them. It is obviously not as inspired as their classic work, but it is significantly better than "The Sport Of Kings", their worst release!

2 out of 5 stars Triumph is not Triumph without Rik Emmett.......2005-01-20

A Triumph album without the immense all-around talents of guitarist/singer/songwriter Rik Emmett is simply not Triumph. This early 90s release was the one and only effort by drummer/singer Gil Moore and bassist Mike Levine to continue on after parting ways with Emmett. ALLIED FORCES or JUST A GAME this album is not. . . by any stretch! EDGE OF EXCESS -- with former Aldo Nova guitarist Phil X and Toronto youngen Mladen teaming to take over Emmett's spot only on guitars -- is worlds different from Rik-era Triumph. Gone and sorely missing are Emmett's sweet vocals and beautiful melodies and great guitar solos. EDGE OF EXCESS does rock hard start to finish but the songs fall miserably short of Triumph gems of years gone by. There's no depth on this album. Just 10 completely straight-forward, power-driving hard rock songs, all with lead vocals by drummer Gil Moore. A few of them, though, really aren't that bad for what they are. "Troublemaker," "Child Of The City" and "Turn My Back On Love" are fierce, heavy and loud. Ted Nugent would be proud. I prefer Rik Emmett. EDGE OF EXCESS is not a total triumph, nor is it total Triumph.

2 out of 5 stars Lost the main talent.......2003-07-26

This album proves that Rik Emmett was the driving force of Triumph and the most adept musician. Although much heavier sounding than any other Triumph work, the songwriting and musicianship is flat and uninteresting. The production values are decent and one song made it to a movie soudtrack (Hellraiser III) This work is OK if you think of it as a different band with the same name, but it can't compare to any other Triumph album and it's a good thing that they called it quits after this.

5 out of 5 stars music for music lovers.......2004-01-23

laurent garnier shows again why he's one of, if not THE, most versatile dj in the world, and proves why he's so damn sought-after. the three discs contained herein have garnier playing everything from hard techno to tracks with a jazzier techy feel and blending in house, hip-hop, even pulling a drum and bass track from nirvana's "smells like teen spirit"...and everything garnier does, he does flawlessly. unlike some other djs who blend and mash genres, garnier's not just a dj's dj, he's a music lover's dj. absolutely essential.

5 out of 5 stars You poor Americans.......2004-01-06

You're only getting this now while us Europeans have been enjoying this box set for quite some time now. Alas, some of you more impatient types probably ordered the whole 5 CD set from www.fcomshop.com and are already enjoying the benefits to know how good it is. Of course keep that website in mind. Amazon will only send you 3 out of the 5 CDs. If you want the other two - the website above will gladly help you.

But now onto the music - well all I can say is that " c'est tres magnifique." CD 1,2 and 4 will work great as a party mood but can also be listened to without having to dance - which is a little bit of a rarity given it's culture. CD 3 is more of a downbeat CD. Twisted electronica, jazzy moments and a spot of French pop from Alain Bashung ( Madame Reve ) make this a good time to relax after either partying hard with the other two CDs or having another stressful day at work. CD 5 is more of an angry mix made directly after Laurent's reaction to the extreme right wing coming into the second round of the presidential election. Listen to the track he made with Sangoma - it's pure undiluted rage.

Of course, I should remind you that this will only happen if you order from www.fcomshop.com for CD4 and 5. It's really is worth it. Trust me I've done the same ( more out of a common belief that if I buy a box set I want it complete )

Also assuming you have a computer with internet and I assume you do if you are reading this that's not all ( I'm beginning to sound like those guys you hear on QVC ). You'll get access to Laurent Garnier's website and also PBB which is where Laurent has his own sort of radio show on the internet. But don't worry it's just pure music and you never get the same set twice!

So in recap this box set has much more value for money than what you might expect. So there's no other reason for any of you wondering on this but to go out and buy it!

2 out of 5 stars Buy this ONLY if you liked the score..........2005-04-26

I loved the songs from the movie. Like someone here said, it did make the movie better. Unfortunately, they did not release a "Various Artists" soundtrack, thus resulting in this "Score from..." album. Anyway, here is the list of the songs from the movie:

      "Crash Into Me"
      The Dave Matthews Band

      "Stop By"
      Rahsaan Patterson

      "All Mixed Up"
      Red House Painters

      "Old Devil Moon"
      Carmen McRae

"(We Were) Made For Each Other"
      Bekka & Billy

      "Sweet Home Alabama"
      Lynyrd Skynyrd

      "One Headlight"
      The Wallflowers

      "Happiness"
      Abra Moore

      "Earth vs. Me"
      Powerman 5000

"The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You"
      Bryan Adams

      Hope this helped. Enjoy!

Ok well i was so exited that amazon had this cd cuz i loved the songs on the movie which was so good it was very cute. alicia silverstone was good and how hot was benicio del toro lol. anyways the soundtrack was a big disapointment for me it had none of the songs that i wanted to hear on it exept for its all mixed up (great song). so i wanted to find out that other song i was looking for two days strait and could not find it but then i did so if anyone wants it the other song in the movie is crash into me by dave mathews band such a good song. so ya there it is just thought i would put it out for others so thats it

Not what I expected. The movie had an awesome soundtrack but none of those songs were included. Only one song was included...All Mixed Up, which is an excellent song. The rest of songs on the soundtrack are background music basically. Not worth the price.

      2 out of 5 stars Dissappointed....but what could I expect........1999-02-04

I bought this CD after falling in love with Lurie from the Get Shorty Soundtrack, and from the Fishing with John TV series. Unfortunately, I found that this album is almost entirely "movie music" which is fine if you're actually watching the film, but somehow lacks a context without the film. Heard the film was terrible, so I guess the context is about right. Only a few songs on this album are worth while, and they are not worth the price of admission.

the Caroline label did such a bang up job on some of the Human League reissues, so it's a HUGE disappointment to see this no frills reissue of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. HOW could they NOT include the 12" version of the song Success, the marriage of sigue sigue with the SAW production team behind all the Dead or Alive hits? Plus there was the great B-side Frankenstein Cha Cha to that 12" single that should have been included as well. What a missed opportunity.

This is going to be a short review because the last reviewer summed up the album very nicely.

This album is definitely better and more polished than "Flaunt It." Not that there was anything wrong with their debut, other than about 5 songs on there sounded like watered down versions of "Love Missile F1-11." However, that album had one song which is stronger than any song on "Dress For Excess" - "Massive Retaliation." With the borrowed melody of Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony", stabbing bass and heavy head-bobbing beats, this is the song you would want to listen to loudly while driving slowly down the street, if you want to draw attention to yourself.

My favorites on "Dress" are "Albinoni Vs. Star Wars" (a complex song which starts off slowly and dramatically, then immediately starts rockin' with authority, and really showcases the band's maturity), "Orgasm" (something tells me that the samples of people screaming "Oh My God!!!" throughout the song are being cleverly used to accentuate the song, but were probably taken from films where the characters are not actually involved in sexual situations at the time, and are being used out of context), "Boom Boom Satellite" and "Dance Dance Dance." And if you can find it, the remix of "Success" is nice, but the single version is good as well.

I didn't really have much else to add because, as I mentioned, the previous reviewer gave a nice, thorough write-up. However, I wanted to provide one minor correction. The sample in the song "M.A.D." which says, "I'll take you on any day, sucker!" was NOT Ollie North. Being the 80s fan that I am, I recognized that line as being spoken by John Cusack from the movie "Better Off Dead", where the blond guy who stole his girlfriend challenged him to a downhill ski race, and that's when John's character accepted the challenge by delivering that line.

This album may sound a bit dated with the nuclear war references (big concern in the 80s), but it's still a great album which I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Music this time? Well, what was it the first time?.......2003-01-18

Some of the material in Dress For Excess are songs from Flaunt It lightly coated in different flavours of something more pop-palatable, but without sacrificing or muting Neal X's blaring lead guitar, techno beat, or the randomly-inserted vocal samples. It's just as weird and partying as Flaunt It.

In "Albinoni vs Star Wars", the famous mournful melody by Albinoni sounds out on electronic synthesizers, with a cacophony of "what's going on here?" followed by "it's beautiful!" Probably referring to mushroom clouds. Then comes the familiar Sputnik sound and Neal X's blaring punk guitars. This is a song of post-nuclear apocalypse, of radiation ("feel the heat") that has made mankind sterile: "I'm shooting blanks."

The futuristic "Boom Boom Satellite" is more along Depeche Mode or Xymox, except with more body and personality, with some females singing "Sha la la laa laalaa!"

"Hey Jayne Mansfield Superstar!" is the first song sounding anything remotely like material from Flaunt It. It's a funny, irreverent tribute to the blonde turbo-bodied sex goddess of the 1950's and 1960's whose "private life was a publicist's dream." The vocal imitations of her are from her movie Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?; the repeated "She's got it" is a nod to Little Richard's song "She's Got It" from Girl Can't Help It. My favourite song here. Love that pink guitar and that swift electronic drum solo!

"Supercrook Blues" continues the usual Sputnik party mode and owes nods to Carl Perkins "dancing in my blue suede shoes," and Little Richard: "Awopbopaloobop". The mock news item samples and some hot guitar work boost this song.

"Rio Rocks!" about the decadent night life of Rio de Janeiro, ratchets the rhythm up a notch, with a host of people singing "Day-O!" a la Harry Belafonte. Overall message: "Some like it hot, some like it cool, like it or not, this is what you got, space age party that's never gonna stop. Another superlative number.

"Success" was produced by Stock-Aitken-Waterman (Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley) and some might accuse the Sigues of selling out. Yes, the dance rhythm is undeniably S-A-W, but it might as well be Sputnik-Aitken-Waterman. Another song of decadence, champagne, Saville Row suits, on the beach with a Rolls Royce, girls, just vulgarly flaunting luxury. A yuppy's wet dream come true!

"Dance Dance Dance" is a slow dance number with a quick-paced synth backbeat. "Orgasm" is the sniggeringly playful naughty song, complete with various people saying or yelling "Oh my god!" and a naughty bass beat. "M*A*D (Mutual Assured Destruction)" is the anti-nuclear song, and it boogies to a mad beat despite the subject matter. The one imitated sample saying "God forbid this might lead to nuclear war" is taken from the Bond movie, The Living Daylights and "Let's play thermonuclear attack" is from Wargames. Typical vocal imitations have that 80's Cold War anti-Soviet rhetoric: "They're a bunch of commies!", "God bless America", and even Ollie North: "I'll take you on any day, sucker." If a video was to be made of this song, include clips from Dr. Strangelove, Fail Safe, and Wargames. Best lyric: "You've never ever lost by being too strong and you're never too strong when you got the bomb."

The quiet and acoustic guitar, with whooshing special effects "Is This The Future" ends the album and is a big contrast after all the excitement. Hey, after one had gone MAD, maybe this simplistic sound is all the music one will ever have.

5 out of 5 stars STILL WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME!.......2001-06-07

When SSS leader TJ BoSSS proclaimed that he wanted to have a band that combined the very best elements of Suicide, Eddie Cochran, Elvis, Donna Summer, etc, He hit the nail on the head with SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK! Dress For Excess, their second album, blazes a path of turbocharged relentless rhythms, overdubbed staccato beat vocals with cut and paste guitar licks that confront tired, cliched, do it by the numbers rock and roll and turns it on its head! To fully appreciate SSS you have to bring to the table a sense of humor, a sense of vision and having a broad musical knowledge base adds to the overall excitement. I wholeheartedly recommended this cd to music fans who understand the wildly frenetic history of rock and roll and who are not afraid to embrace a group who pushed the HELL out of that 'Old School' envelope and charted a musical course, complete with colorful homage, to its extreme limits!!!

      1 out of 5 stars Not good........2001-05-29

Now this is bad. Their debut album 'Flaunt It' is charming, in a way, because of the novelty, although it's still not very good. 'Dress for Excess', on the other hand, doesn't have novelty going for it, and some of the willfully-shambolic bravado of the first album has transformed into almost-conventional INXS-esque rock'n'roll, but not nearly as good. 'Success' is essentially the only listenable track. It's produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, and is similar to lots of other SAW hits - loud bass, bits of contemporary house, all wrapped up in shiney pop gloss, utterly hollow. It's a shame the whole album wasn't like it. 'Hey Jayne Mansfield Superstar!' sounds exactly like all the songs on 'Flaunt It' (they have the same music but with different words), whilst the rest of the album is dreadful. 'Rio Rocks!', for example, is a twisted brainwrong version of 'La Bamba', and tells us that the band think that Rio, like, rocks! We know this because the chorus tells us over and over again. It sounds like a band who have lost all hope and are just going through the motions.
