when we put out Chris Connor's "A Portrait of Chris" album and mistakenly stated that Maynard Ferguson played on it, we got a bunch of messages basically saying "You're wrong, he doesn't, but you really should put out Chris' and his Double Exposure album!" Well, we are your humble servants, especially when the album in question is such a gem, featuring the two giantsthen on two different labels!harkening back to their association in Stan Kenton's band for a cookin' set of mostly standards. Double Exposure.......2006-07-17
As I had only the old vinyl copy of this superb album and it was somewhat battered from playing, it was a joy to find that it was available on CD.What can you say about an album featuring two such great artistes as Maynard and Chris. The chemistry is evident from the start. It would be useful to know whether there is another album featuring the two of them?
Great stuff from two great performers.......2005-07-21
While the tune selection dates the album - 'Summertime', 'I only have eyes for you' and 'Lonesome Road' were never among my favourites or mayhap they got worn out from OVER exposure - several items are gems. 'It never entered my mind', 'Spring can really hang you up the most' and 'Banana tree' are my faves. Ferguson lets Connor sing and his excursions into the stratosphere are timely and apt. The band never over-shadows that warm dusky voice but everyone seems to be having a good time. I did. And will again and again.
Picture Perfect Chris Connor And Maynard Ferguson.......2003-08-25
This is a duo with the number one horn player of the twentieth century Maynard Ferguson and Big Band singer Chris Connor. Maynard's status is obviously much higher than Chris's although Chris is so beautiful in her own realm or domain that we tend to overlook the facts surrounding the legacy of Maynard. One must give this album 5 stars just because.... Maynard is becoming such a collectible based on his greatness. He's still touring at age 75!!!!!! Every trumpet player knows of his greatness. A five star or I should say 10 star performer the last 50+ years. Maynard rules the world on trumpet always and forever. This album is a must in every sense of the word. Bill Hocking

Customer Reviews:
Double Exposure's debut album was a classic in every way. .......2007-05-19
Perhaps because they recorded for a label so closely associated with Disco music (Salsoul Records) Double Exposure never got the acclaim or recognition they deserved. This album, however, is truly superb on all counts and is a perfect (musical) marriage of Disco and Soul. The ageless "My Love Is Free" and "Ten Percent" were both major club hits but the album's crown jewel is the glorious remake of The Four Tops' hit "Baby I Need Your Loving". Although they only recorded three LPs, Double Exposure could easily give groups like The Dramatics, The Spinners, The O'Jays, The Temptations and The Four Tops a runfor their fame and money. Originally released in 1976.
TY BESS(THE MUSIC MAN) .......2006-12-23
I was very shocked and happy to find this album on cd .The title song ten percent has been used as background music for some sport shows in the 70,s and 80,s.I love the energy in my love is free and ten percent but the real gem is ,just can,t say hello, great love song. Now i can put my album away and relive the magic of double exposure and enjoy!
F-U-N-K-Y.......2004-06-02
I found it!!! This is a must to have... Ten Percent & My Love is Free are constantly played at all the clubs-mixed. The music is ageless and gets everyone on to the floor.
This is pure gold!.......2002-12-25
The vinyl and the cd versions I have are original I guess though they do not contain the 12" mix of 'My Love Is Free', no big deal since the album version is far better. Anyway, this album and Trammps 'That's Where The Happy People Go' album should be nominated for Disco Hall of Fame, the two best albums ever.
Pretty Good.......2000-08-11
This is a Pretty Good Record.Good Up-tempo Material&What have you.it Reminds me of a Cross Between The O'Jays&Taveras.I Hear Elements of Both those Groups here.it has Good Party Type Jams on it.you Hear alot of Different Groups thru Double Exposure.

Customer Reviews:
Crazy for Photograph.......2007-01-23
was one of many fans who inundated Rhino and drove Melanie and Peter crazy over this album. I joined the Melanie list and began my tirade and became the most hated member on that list, but I believed in the album so much and wanted to see it re-issued so badly I was willing to take the heat, as were a few other member's on the list. We believed in the album and Melanie enough to forge on and now here it is, don't miss the opportunity as it is released in limited numbers. I think every artist has a defining moment, the consumate work, a work that no matter what cannot be duplicated or be touched by any other, for Melanie it is Photograph. The only other album of its time that I would say runs a close second is 1974's 'Madrugada'. Madrugada was masterfully produced and arranged by her husband and producer Peter Schekeryk with Melanie doing some of the best vocals of her career. The song 'The Actress' from 'Madrugada' is brilliant and reminds me of 'Save Me' from 'Photograph' and would make a beautiful medley. Melanie has gift for taking a lyric and turning it into poetry some of her best lyric's appear on these two albums and I believe they really belong together. Melanie does a brilliant cover of the song
'Wild Horses' by The Rolling Stones on 'Madrugada'that I doubt any vocalist could match in the depth and emotion she gives to the song, not to mention the jaw-dropping vocal which is breath taking, you would have to hear it to believe it. That being said 'Photograph'is exceptional and in my opinion the better of the two only because it does have a timeless quality that is all its own. All things came together to make one incredible album, an album that is now 30 years old, but if it never existed and was released today I don't think anyone would be the wiser, it was like nothing else any artist of the day had done. I believe it was referred to as "experimental" because of the unique quality of the arrangements and vocals. A predecessor to mixing that is standard fare on most albums today, except in those days Melanie was the first to do it. The song's 'Raindance' and 'Cyclone' come to mind right away. The whole album is a testament to Melanie's ablity to tackle any musical genre and do it well. "Im So Blue" which showcases Melanie singing her own beautiful jazz and blues inspired composition to "Groundhog Day" soft and gentle at first explosive in the next. The alternate version of "Groundhog Day" on the second CD with its Native American chants would give Buffy St. Marie a run for her money. The very beautiful "If I Needed You" will make your heart race. She even reaches for the Divine with "Secret Of The Darkness" (I Believe) as good a gospel song as and vocal as any I have heard, will make you get up on your feet and praise the lord. Ultimately though it is Melanie's voice that holds in all together, the most amazing insturment of all on the album capable at this point in career of doing just about anything she asked it to do. I could go on about the excellent vocals, amazing production and lyrics but thats all been said, and not just by her fans. The album was on many top ten critic's list for that year and even bettered the like's of Joni Mitchell. Melanie for all her talent was an is a victim of an image foisted upon her with such a venom by the disgruntled Buddah records label that saw her independence an leave of the label to form her own with Peter called 'Neighborhood Records' as an affront to them. Its seems they believed Melanie owed them and now they would make her pay, and she did dearly. But never the less Melanie remains an immensely talented American original that if given a chance will get under your skin and into your heart and will remain there. Personally I believe that this album is exactly about that image, in the story she is telling with this album. Her story, how she got to where she is and how screwed up the music industry really is, its all about image she is saying, and how wrong everybody got hers. Its ironic that the most personal album, the best album of her career never got heard. Maybe this time it will. For those of you looking for more current material I highly recommend 'Pale By Dimmer Light' Melanie's vocal's are superb and many of the song's like 'The ballad of Crazy love' or 'Extraordinary' reminds one of how gifted a singer/songwriter she is. The only criticism I have of the album is the exclusion of the song 'Prone To Wander' but you can find that on the album 'Crazy Love'.
A great 70's album too few people heard.......2006-11-16
What a thrill it is to find this recording remastered on CD!
Like Mitchell's "Court & Spark" and Baez's "Diamonds & Rust," this recording places a mostly acoustic performer in a lush pop setting. "Photograph" shares many of the same session musicians from those two recordings. The result was, and is, outstanding. "Cyclone" [the opener] is an edgy, adult, Dorthy-Goes-to-Oz outing. From there, the producers allow for a series of pop stylings including Carribean "Secret of Darkness" and jazz "I'm So Blue" (with Art Pepper). There is a thumping version of "(My Baby Wrote Me) The Letter," just for good measure. Disc One of the re-release ends with a live reocrding not on the original release, but fun. I'm not certain there is a need for Disc Two: the cast-offs and alt-takes did nothing for me beyond "Remenber Me Good," which obviously was the last cut from the final release. Melanie was never in a stronger, more confident voice than the late 70's, and this is the best of those recordings. My thanks to "Da Brat" for alerting me to this re-release. I never knew there was a bigger Mealnie fan than me. I hope we meet some day.

Modest but excellent session.......2006-07-09
This one is named after Larry Young's last album, a duo with Joe Chambers also called _Double Exposure_; but it's more of a straightahead post-Jimmy Smith organ disc rather than channelling Young's fiery post-Trane style. Which is only right: Gene Ludwig is a 68-year-old Pittsburgh native who was turned on to the organ as a teenager when he heard Jimmy Smith play in 1957. I'd not encountered his music before, though he's worked with players like Sonny Stitt, Arthur Prysock & Pat Martino (as well as Charles Earland, before Earland switched from sax to organ). This date was an impromptu session recorded in some spare studio time in 2000 after Ludwig & drummer Cecil Brooks III had finished work on a Jimmy Ponder session. It's not so often that you hear a bare organ/drums combo (usually saxophone, bass &/or guitar are present), & it's nice to hear them in this spare setting, blasting through a nicely unobvious pick of tunes--some cute uptempo standards like "Tea for Two" & "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" (compare with the version on Smith's _Groovin' at Small's Paradise_) &, of course, the drummer's feature "Cute"; a couple melting, lavishly orchestrated ballads, "You've Changed" & "Seranade in Blue"; & a terrific Stevie Wonder cover, "Bird of Beauty" (Brooks' drumming here is quite tumultuous). Not a hevayweight album, perhaps, but it's great stuff if you love the sound of the Hammond, & it doesn't overstay its welcome (it's a compact 47 minutes long). Check it out.

Customer Reviews:
Genius Fusion.......2006-12-08
An amazing amalgam of disco, soul and gospel, this music has transcended its time - although it's immediately identifiable as 70s - and now sounds visionary. It can be a little hysterical, but the 3 discs are helpfully entitled The Madness Begins, The Madness Continues... and Total Insanity... By the time you get to Cellophane's Super Queen you may want to shriek like the banshee on the track. This is very mood-specific music.
Funky, Cool, Amazing & Intelligent Disco.......2006-03-19
This is an amazing collection of soulful, funky and intelligent disco - but don't that word scare you off - it's all fun and great. While people seem to know all the big (and yes, often dumb) pop disco athemns, these funky, soulful and smart tracks seems to have been forgotten. There are some real gems here and in fact, put most of the modern day "classic house" tracks to shame. Basically, these modern tracks with their fancy drum machines cannot hope to touch the soul and vocals on many tracks and of course, the real instrument playing to drive the funky beats.
If you love classic & deep house music - you'll definitely want to hear these in all their glory - the sound quality is great and you can see the tracks the new guys are trying to emulate.
Absolute Necessity!.......2005-02-09
ANYONE who thinks they understand disco from its early days will be pleasantly surprised when they hear this compilation. Future generations o DJs will still learn from this master who achieved cult status and was known as a DJs DJ. This collection is a must-have for any serious collector of early disco music outside of the Saturday Night Fever stuff; this is truly how it was back in New York City during the mid-70s.
