Nothing special, but worth picking up for a few songs.......2004-09-20

This was an odd cd release of an unfairly ignored, late 70's comeback attempt by Tom Evans and Joey Molland. The original album was a not unpleasant collection of tunes, with a few that even hinted at the greatness that had somehow slipped away from the band years earlier. Even when they weren't at their best, the results were far from bad, but the cd release was done by some hanger-on who was a part of the project at one point, but quit before the album came out. All these years later, this wannabe has packaged the original album with several "bonus" tracks that he wrote at the time of his involvement with the album or because he was inspired by the later death of Tom Evans. PUH-LEEZE! Can you say cash grab? The Badfinger name has been dragged through the mud enough by assorted people over the years, to the point that one has to view anything except the original Apple and WB releases with a critical eye, wondering if someone had sweetened them or worse, re-done them in a nefarious plan to line their own pockets. The original Airwaves stuff is worth having if you're a big fan, but not by any means essential to the novice Badfinger fan. I'm hoping that the Tuesday re-release has the "bonus" tracks cut and left in the toilet where they belonged.

Good Songs on an Uneven Album.......2004-02-07

Airwaves from 1979 was the first Badfinger album to be released without Pete Ham, who tragically committed suicide in 1975. Of course he is sadly missed on this album, which only feaures two earlier members ; Tom Evans and Joey Molland. After Pete's death the group disbanded and both Tom and Joey were in other bands.
In 1978 they felt like reuniting and drummer Mike Gibbins were also to a rehearsal before this recording. Unfortunately Mike quickly left again and he is therefore not on this album. The line-up is: Tom Evans: bas vocals; Joey Molland: guitar, vocals; Joe Tansin: lead guitar; Ken Harck: drums; Andy Newmark: drums and Nicky Hopkins: keyboards. Ken Harck left during the recording and he was replaced by Andy Newmark to finish the album. Joe Tansin left soon after the final recordings. Nicky Hopkins only work a session musician; he was not a member of the band.

The popular pop/rock music had changed during the 5 years since the last Badfinger album, so obviously the album had to be different from their earlier albums. Producer David Malloy has often been critizised for poor production on this Badfinger album. "He had not been able to find the real Badfinger-sound". I think that's an unfair and wrong concluson. Actually a lot of the album is really good. Tom Evans' songs Lost Inside Your Love and Sail Away are true highlights. Joey's Love is Gonna Come at Last is a very commercial number and it was released a single; it did not do very well, though. The Dreamer, also by Joey, is a nice ballad, a track you may not discover the first two or three times you listen to the album; but it gets better every time. Joe Tansin wrote two songs for the album; Sympathy and The Winner. Sympathy is too commercial for my taste, almost disco-like; The Winner is a rocker similar to many of Joey's songs. Tansin shows on several tracks that he's a fabulous guitarist and some of the weaker tracks are helped a lot from his guitarplaying. The original playing time was rather short, so luckily this CD version feature 5 bonus tracks of which "Send Me Some Love", "Can You Feel The Rain" and "One More Time" are very good.

Sounds like your typical late-70's rock/pop music..........2003-09-30

Airwaves sees the salvaged band of Badfinger perhaps trying a little too hard to have a hit record. The late seventies were some bad years for rock music, in my opinion, and this album doesn't offer up anything too special. Despite what Elecktra Records apparently said at the time, I don't agree that the album sounds much like Badfinger (save for the voices, of course).
The simple, 30-second acoustic guitar opener begins the album light-weightedly and zaps right into "Look Out California," one of the better tracks, where the band sings about being "back in the airwaves." It's a good rocker, very good considering the year it was made. "Lost Inside Your Love" sounds like a half-ballad, but isn't very memorable. Fleeting member Joe Tansin's two contributions, "Sympathy" and "The Winner," sung by Tom Evans & Joey Molland, respectively, don't help the overall album much. "Sympathy" has a cool guitar riff, but the vocals and beat become a bit too disco-sounding for my tastes. The song which reportedly kicked off the sessions for Airwaves, the well-meaning "The Winner," isn't too much better.
Joey really proves his worth on this album, contributing most of the better tracks. "Love Is Gonna Come At Last" is a soft rocker and a very delicious slice of pop, and placed perfectly on the album. "The Dreamer" is a near-grandiose ballad, whose majestic arrangement clashes nicely with Joey's rough voice. However, "Come Down Hard," probably the hardest on the album, isn't anything special. Despite Joey's strong showing, it's Tom who steals the spotlight at the end with the beautiful piano ballad "Sail Away," where he sings about carrying on, a phrase, ironically, Badfinger seemed to use a lot.
The bonus tracks, unfortunately, aren't worth much. For starters, three of them shouldn't even be considered Badfinger tracks. The ones I'm referring to are "Send Me Your Love," "Steal My Heart," and "Can You Feel The Rain." The former two were recorded by Tansin during the mid-80's (ew). The reason why they are included with the album is because he wrote them during the Airwaves sessions. "Can You Feel The Rain" was written later after Tom's suicide and recorded expressly for this reissue. All three are pretty bad. Even Joey Molland's "Love Can't Hide," co-written by him & Tansin and recorded for the reissue, isn't too good. The only bonus track which truely belongs is "One More Time" (featuring Tansin's lead vocal), which was actually recorded during the Airwaves sessions but not used...and it's pretty easy to see why.
In short, if you're currently in the process of collecting Badfinger's albums like I am, you probably shouldn't make Airwaves a high priority.

Beautiful Album.......2000-11-20

I bought this LP back in 1979 and it quickly became one of my all time favourite albums. I started getting into Badfingers music shortly after Peter Ham died. Though it does miss the sounds of Pete's voice and songs, I'm glad Tommy and Joey got together to make this album.

Sometimes the signal gets a little lost or garbled.......2000-11-05

Without Pete Ham Badfinger floundered. The founding member's suicide in 1975 saddened fans of the band and put a creative strain on the remaining members. It also sapped their creative energy. Reportedly both Evans and Molland had their doubts about continuing the Badfinger name. The expectations would be high for their work even without Ham. Still, it did guarentee an audience in the form of the band's fans. Remaining members Joey Molland and Tom Evans () are joined by guitarist/ vocalist Joe Tasnin. Mike Gibbins had been invited back, but fired shortly before recording of Airwaves began. He is sorely missed although session player Andy Newmark and temporary member Ken Harck do an admirable job on most of the songs. Inspite of all this Airwaves succeeds more often than it fails.

While the songs are catchy and well written, the arrangements are a little MOR and reflect the lost vitality and uncertainity of the band. Producer David Malloy is frequently criticized for his "over the top" production style, but, in all fairness, it does recall the detailed production work by Todd Rundgren and George Harrison from Straight Up. He seems to be compensating for some of the weaker material. Sail Away, Look Out California amd Love is Gonna Come At Last all would have fit right in with the quality material on Straight Up or No Dice.

The late session ace Nicky Hopkins helps to flesh out the band's sound. Despite the evident flaws on this album, it's nice to have Airwaves back after a twenty year absence.

The follow up Say No More would boast sharper songwriting from Evans and Molland. Say No More had considerable spark despite pedestrian production due to the inclusion of Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye as a full time member of the band. That album also benefited from Richard Bryans who replaced Mike Gibbins briefly when Gibbins quit in the 70's.Both albums should be added to any fan's collection although they might not be the place to start for new fans.

CLEVENGER'S ROOKIE EFFORT WAS HAILED BY THE GESTICULATING OLD MEN OF POP WORLD AS BRILLIANT. HOWEVER IF ONE GETS PAST THE REALLY COOL JINGLE JANGLE VOX TONES, THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT AS ORIGINAL AS NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. THE SONGS SOUND LIKE SOMETHING A JUNIOR HIGH BAND WROTE ONCE THEY LEARNED THEIR THIRD CHORD. THE LYRICS ARE JUST SILLY. THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES DISAPPOINTS TRACK AFTER TRACK UNTIL FINALLY YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO WILCO AS AN ELIXR TO THE ILLNESS THAT THIS ALBUM HAS INFECTED YOU WITH - BOREDOM!

Walter Clevenger is truly a gifted songwriter. He has that rare ability to write songs that even during your first listen, you'll find yourself singing along. This is definitely a must have CD for any collection.
I have seen the band play live, and Walter(Lead Guitar/Vocals), Steve Bancroft(Lead Guitar/Vocals),Henry Clift( Bass Guitar/Vocals) and Mike Fernandez(Drums) are a blast! They are also a great bunch of guys.

Have I arisen from bloody grave? This record contains alot of Beatlesque hooks and grooves. Not since I showed MAC a thing or two in the studio have I heard such originality. I thought Yoko was diggin up me old tapes and was ripping me off again. "Please Send Boat" is Brian Wilson meets Jimmy Buffet meets Bob Welch. I wish I could get another copy here in la la land.

This guy has been crankin' out some of the best power pop for years! Not since Sir Paul heard Pet Sounds has anyone been more inspired to put these kind of tracks down. Breet is one of the true masters of his craft. Brian Wilson and Godley & Creme have got nothing on this boy! I've got two words for this album: "I want more!"

A terrific follow up to "Spooj" with more hits on a CD than a Monkees album. "Same as Me", "Psychotic Season" and "Good Karma" get my votes for great pop songs. It's about time this artist got into your music collection. Buy it, Play it and the Breetles will make your day.

Inventive, rocking, witty, tuneful, and what else do you need in your life, damnit? Not exactly soul music, but music for the soul nonetheless. Thick soles with deep treads. Songs to walk the world in. Must we call it pop? How about BANG! Get it, absorb it, live by it.

Wow!.......2001-09-17

The Permanent Press Label has brought us some great pop/rock over the last several years, and this CD stands out as the best of a fine catalogue. As you may have read elsewhere, Richard X. (yo, Richard, what's with that "X," anyway??) Heyman is a singer/songwriter/instrumentalist who now has several CD's to his credit. He has an uncanny knack for beginning a song with a simple riff or chord progression and then building it into a thing of power and beauty. His voice is more reminiscent of Dylan or Knopfler than the usual "powerpop" icons, and I'm not sure powerpop is really the best description of what he does, but the guy is very talented no matter what label you put on his music. "Cornerstone" ups the ante from the also-excellent "Hey Man" by uniting the tracks in a sort of "song cycle" about returning to his boyhood home town and reflecting on those formative years and their impact on his adult life. Any thoughtful listener can relate. There's no need to single out tracks, because they're all excellent. Easily my CD Of The Year for 1998.

ok so theres people out there that listen to this stuff? although under the far too giddy music i believe is some hooks, but the production sounds like it was recorded under water, and thatd even be cool if this was a good album by anyone other than this guy. this is truly annoying music by all means. the lryics are about god knows and the music is just really unorginal. reminds me of 60s folk recorded by some dude that was tripping on shrooms. this is not a good thing by the way. i dont like this album and i will try my best to stay away from music like this.

Too good for the cutout bins.......2000-11-10

I wrote one of those lists for 90's pop and this guy is one I forgot. That seems to have been his fate with most of his releases--the terrific "Hey Man!" album is in most used stores for a dollar. But he's pretty much a one-man band who writes songs that stay with you. His singing may be a bit nasal, but his overdubbed harmonies work for me. He does take too long between albums though.

TOP 10 OF ALL TIME!.......2000-04-08

This disc is definitely in my top 10 of all time. What can be said that the other reviewers and editorial comments have not said already? This man is a pop genius, and this is his most realized work. I picked up this disc at a time when I was going through 'relationship hassles.' The melodies are so catchy, the harmonies, the drums, guitars, and keys so perfect. Even the song cycle, revolving around the startup, troubles, and eventual triumph of the relationship, is fully realized. This guy must be a perfectionist! There is not a flaw in any way, shape or form on this disc! I here there is new music sometime in Y2K for Mr. Heyman. And I'm sure it will be unbelievably fantastic!

Great Songs!.......2000-01-17

Very few musicians live up to the claim that they are "undiscovered geniuses". I think RXH comes pretty darn close. There are at least five or six songs on this album that I will probably listen to for the rest of my life: Cornerstone, All I Have, If We Should Ever Meet Again, From This Day Forever, Ask Anyone Who's Tried, and When It Was Our Time. It takes a real "greatness of soul" to write songs like these--few artists can touch this place very often, if ever. The rest of the album is pretty great, too.

Pretty nice work.......1999-07-15

This is one of the best pure pop bands today. CM leader, Brian Kassan, also a member of wonderful Wondermints, is a Macca-Wilson mastermind. This is their first album, full of pop gems like my reaction, she stills shines, i just fall and one of the most beautiful tunes of 1997, I Want You Only. I'm expecting with their new follow-up record, probably called Bowl of Surreal. I'm sure it will deserve five stars!

A fine, little pop band from L.A. Wonderful songwriting, playing, singing, production - you name it. Fans of bands like Big Star and Teenage Fanclub will be especially enthralled.

From The Family Tree to Roxy to The Wackers to The Dudes to his solo releases, Bob Segarini has made consistently compelling pop music for the mind and body. Why he isn't a star could be the subject of a million dissertations. Meanwhile, buy this CD and any other release of his that you can get your hands on. The proof is in the music and you should be listening.

A Total Melodic Delight.......2005-03-28

Hard to believe that this album and Bob Segarini didn't achieve great fame. Well, the cynical side of me says, "No surprise." Afterall, how many radio stations would dare to play the very lyrical "Steady Eddie" with its satirical play on Beaver Cleaver and his television clan? "Don't Believe a Word I Say" scrutinizes the dating scene and all the phoney bravado it generates. "Gotta Have Pop," "When the Lights are Out," and other tunes here just delight with great melodies and pretty doggone entertaining lyrics that don't insult the listener's intelligence. All in all, a real delightful listening experience.

Power pop fans gotta have this!.......2000-05-16

Canadian Bob Segarini is one of those artists who toiled in relative obscurity for many years yet consistently turned out outstanding material.(Can you say.."Martin Newell"?) This was his first solo outing after helming several projects in the 70's, including the Dudes and his most well-known group, the Wackers. Originally released in the early 80's, this collection is an unsung power-pop classic. I would place the album's best tune, "With The Lights Out" up there with Todd Rundgren's "Couldn't I Just Tell You" or Cheap Trick's "Surrender" any day. Nary a weak song on this CD...power poppers dig in!

Album Description

The Van Delecki's sophomore album, Ebum Shoobum Shoobum, often sounds like it could have been recorded in 1969. The North Carolina duo is right out of the Byrds' school of ultra-melodic, harmony-minded pop/rock. While pearls like 'Desperation Is...,' 'Oleen,' and 'Nurse Ratched' are thoroughly engaging and make it clear that the Van Delecki's have mastered the two H's: hooks and harmonies. Indeed, anyone who has spent hours upon hours savoring the Byrds and their many disciples will find 'Bag,' 'Falling to Grace,' 'I Love to Pretend,' and other songs on this album impossible to resist. Ebum Shoobum Shoobum is a captivating, if derivative, disc that lovers of jangly guitar music shouldn't miss. A 1999 Permanent Press release.

Walter Clevenger is truly a gifted songwriter. He has that rare ability to write songs that even during your first listen, you'll find yourself singing along. This is definitely a must have CD for any collection. On Love Songs to Myself, there are songs from across the spectrum of music. Marshall Crenshaw... Buddy Holly...The Beatles...Buck Owens...From rock to country to pop and power pop, Walter Clevenger and the Dairy Kings just rock! The song "I'll Return Again" is a beautiful song about his daughter, who was just a baby when it was written.

I have seen the band play live, and Walter(Lead Guitar/Vocals), Steve Bancroft(Lead Guitar/Vocals),Henry Clift( Bass Guitar/Vocals) and Mike Fernandez(Drums) are a blast! They are also a great bunch of guys.

Get this CD as soon as you possibly can, you'll be happy you did.

Great Pop Album!.......2002-05-08

Wow! This is what I'm talking about! WC has created a fantastic pop disc in Love Songs To Myself. This disc has great songwriting, good vocals and strong production. I am not surprised to hear that Mr. Clevenger has worked with the extremely talented Jeffrey Foskett (Twelve By Twelve). They obviously both share the same love of great pop music.

Very highly recommended, especially if you enjoy the classic pop of the Beatles and Beach Boys.

Buddy Holly Lives.......2000-09-05

I have no idea how old Walter Clevenger is, but he's clearly Buddy Holly -- by way of Marshall Crenshaw -- risen from those ashes in that Iowa cornfield over forty years ago. The recording is simplicity itself, vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. Alright, in a nod to these amped up times, two guitarists, but it's still the bare bones Crickets instrumental lineup, and the sound is crisp and all pop. "All My Love" is Buddy's "Oh, Boy" updated, and "Real," "Lonely Boy" and "So Far Away" all could have been tunes Holly left behind unrecorded. The rest of the generous 15 cut CD is equally catchy. It all goes by fast; no song clocks in at more than 3:19, what used to be perfect for a radio airplay single. On today's stations, who's knows if there's room for these intelligent lyrics and melodic guitar hooks, but if you find me a place on the dial that would play "Girl at the End of the Bar" and Fountains of Wayne's "Red Dragon Tattoo" back to back, that would be a station to make driving and radio listening a fun combination again.

Great Roots Rock/ Power Pop Disc.......2000-05-03

This is a great sophmore effort from Walter Clevenger and his Dairy Kings. The sound here is in the Marshall Crenshaw/Nick Lowe vain--with a good bit of Buddy Holly thrown in for good measure. If you like any of those artists (and by gosh, you should), you won't be disappointed. In my book, it's better than his first disc.

Perfect happy little songs that make your head dance and your heart skip
along a hopscotch trail.
After the first song on this brilliant line up of songs,
you'll be humming the words in line at the local food shop.

Wow!. I never thought i would talk about a pop band from France. France, musically speaking, is a third world country, but sometimes you discover an oasis in the desert and you recover energy and optimism. First song describes all the problems they have had to become they are. Bravo! guys. You really love pop music!

Beautiful music: sweet melodies and well-advised harmonies. If you like the beatles, brian wilson, ray davies, the byrds and xtc, you will like this record.
