There's more to us then surgeons can remove..........2005-11-06
"On a clear day rise and look around you", that is the clarion call from Allan Jay Lerner, from his lyric and libretto of "On A Clear Day". Produced for the 65' 66' Broadway season this charming score remains one of my favorites, composed by Burton Lane and lyrics by the aforementioned Mr. Lerner. The team of Lane and Lerner had previously created "Brigadoon" and a few MGM musical scores. Then in the late fifties Mr Lerner who was on the lookout for a new collaborator, met Mr Lowe at The Lambs Club, and, well they owned Broadway for many a year. Lowe wanted to move back to Europe and enjoy the spoils of his life while Lerner kept going and enlisted Mr Lane to compose this exquisite score. Barbara Harris and John Cullum were the leads in this tale of past lives intersecting with present. The show had a modest run in part because the book was too muddled. I have heard that the book is being rewritten and there will be a revival. It certainly deserves it, lesser shows have been brought back to life while this has been sadly neglected. Meanwhile you can pick up the original cast recording and sing along...you can see forever more. A beautiful score, truely.
CLEAR DAY is a great Broadway score........2004-12-18
When I first heard this score when the show came out in the mid-Sixties, I couldn't get enough of it. The great Barbara Harris was in her prime and she gave the material the kind of voice it deserved. (Unfortunately, Barbra Streisand and Yves Montand didn't do justice to the material. This is a musical with a number of interesting characters and not one that should focus on a STAR. In fact, when the DVD of the movie comes out, I want to add it to my collection if for no other reason than Montand singing the title song. How the French tongue and heavy accent virtually creams some of the lovely songs is enough to put this one in the "don't let this happen to you when casting a movie musical" category.) But the Broadway album captures the musicality of the score very well, considering the recording techniques in the Sixites were nothing like the digital quality today. So, the show isn't exactly My Fair Lady, but Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner could sure crank out great songs, and Clear Day is proof positive of that fact. And, if you're feeling down in the dumps, just listen to Barbara Harris sing "Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here!" I dare you to stay depressed after that one!
Delightful score, enlivened by some first rate performances.......2004-03-02
After Fritz Loewe retired, Alan Jay Lerner tried to team with composer Richard Rodgers (who had recently lost Oscar Hammerstein to cancer.) It was a match seemingly made in heaven that quickly deteriorated, it is claimed, due to Lerner's erratic work habits. Lerner took the idea next to Burton Lane, a gifted and very under rated composer. Together they created an enjoyable score that never quite fit with Lerner's awkward book. Still, it's the score that is heard on the CD and for the most part, it is a total delight.
This original cast recording (starring the wonderful Barbara Harris and in his first starring role the equally wonderful John Cullum) comes with a good set of notes by Ken Madelbaum and a detailed synopsis to take you through the story song by song.
A wonderful Boadway Show.......2003-07-20
I was one of the people lucky enough to see this show on Broadway and loved it. The music on the CD is wonderful. I was not impressed with the liner notes because they tell of Alan Jay Lerner's problems producing the show instead of giving the listener an idea of the plot. William Daniel is interested in climbing in the corporate world so he sends his fiancee, Daisy, to a Psychiatrist to help her stop smoking. The Psychiatrist is John Cullum. While he is hynotizing her to stop smoking, she goes into a past life where she was Melinda, a refined but put upon young woman. During the past sequences, the music is beautiful. I was especially impressed with Clifford David who sings on a bare stage. I expected him to have a big career. The news gets out so a millionaire comes to the Doctor to find out how he can leave his money to himself when he is born again. William Daniel is trying to explain to Daisy that though they are in their 20's, life will be sweet after he retires. John Collum is in love with Melinda which upsets Daisy, but he finally decides they are are the same woman and wants her. In the Finale they get together. I hope this brief summary helps someone who is listening to the gorgeous Burton Lane music and clever Alan Jay Lerner lyrics enjoy the CD more.
A Few Interesting Tidbits.......2002-12-24
I loved this album when it was out in vinyl, and saw the road show version with John Raitt. The reviews on Amazon.com capture the essence of the show. It had an interesting pre-Broadway history. Louis Jordan actually was the male lead in the show and left during it's out of town run. John Cullum who took over having played a supporting role in "Camelot" for Alan Jay Lerner, and was a durable replacement, who went on to many leading roles in musicals including the current "Urinetown" in NYC. Secondly "On a Clear Day" was produced by Robert Goulet and his partner Norman Rosemont, who had the ROGO Productions partnership. Mr. Goulet of course rose to stardom while performing in "Camelot",
and for years did road show versions of "On A Clear Day". He even included two numbers from the show on his terrific "On Broadway" album (available on CD) that was released the same year as the show.

An experiment in chaos and monomania.......2004-07-20
The more traditional math-core songs on this album are devestating-- incredibly heavy, with complex riffs and some strange chords a la Voivod. If they stuck to these kinds of songs, these guys would be unstoppable, maybe the best hardcore band in the world. But a large portion of the album is devoted to highly repetitive, plodding songs that don't seem to have much of a point. Whereas their math-core songs are schizophrenic, moving from one disparate element to the next without ever really settling on anything, these slower songs operate like the mind of a psychotic, endlessly obsessing over one thing. They are pretty daring in their single-mindedness, I guess, but I can't say I understand what they're trying to achieve. The last track is one of the most repetitive I have heard-- it's about 13 minutes long (not counting the hidden track at the end, which may or may not be a continuation of the same song), and progresses through a total of 5 or 6 riffs, one after the other, many of which are played for 3 or 4 minutes at a stretch. I think this song would have been more effective if it had been about half, or even a third, as long. And I would not call the sixth track a song-- it's simply a riff, played over and over. The end result is that I view this album as an EP, since I love half of it, and find the other half excrutiatingly dull.
a definite challenge.......2003-05-02
i got a killer deal on this 2002 LP by knut, a hardcore/noisecore/chaos band from switzerland.
rumor has it there are tons of similar bands popping up in switzerland every day, but let me tell you, accept no substitutes. knut are the real deal. they have blurred the dividing lines of what we think extreme music should be, so this deserves at least one spin from everyone who is reading this.
some of the most engaging, complex hardcore riffing of 2002. also one of my top 5 albums of 2002. they have progressed with the hardcore idea much like converge did in 2001 with 'jane doe', and much like botch did in early 1999 with 'we are the romans'. in my opinion, these 3 albums will be extremely important to the future of noisecore. very experimental, while at the same time extremely solid. just my cup of tea. every track is strong here, with #6 being the pinnacle. its simply the most brutal track of 2002, period.
for fans of converge, coalesce, and botch, challenger would be a very wise investment. highly recommended.

Great Euro Disco.......2003-07-31
There are songs on this album that I heard back in 1985-86 and had no idea who sang them, so buying it was a pleasant discovery. This is a perfect example of mid-80s high energy club euro disco. Challenger and Happy Song are ultimate classics, and you can get this album just to have these two in your collection, if you're into that style of music, of course.
I know nothing about the band, sounds like little kids singing, which resembles the style of Video Kids, but the music is pleasing to the ear and sets your feet in motion.

Good album...3.5 stars........2007-03-24
I dont really get into bands like this, but since the amount of reviews are dismal, here we go.
Challenger is a side project by members of Milemarker, and if you enjoy them, this album will not disappoint. It has a more rough feel to it than most efforts by Milemarker, but hopefully that wont turn you off.
The first half of the album (tracks 1-6) is really great, and filled with catchy riffs and melodies you can sing along to. The latter part, however, drags on a bit, and seems to take FOREVER for the album to finish. Tracks 8 and ten are really the only ones during the second half that prevented me from giving this album 3 stars.
All and all, not a bad play, and the majority of the songs have a great happy/sad feel that are infections and make it so you can't help but sing to. Standout tracks include Input The Output, Death Museum, and Unemployment.
everyone missed out.......2006-09-07
this album is amazing. i just bought it about a month ago, so i'm late in the game. challenger, like milemarker, isn't a typical rock and roll band. they aren't emo or punk or anything. the music, as said by the previous reviewer, has a lot of melody and intensity all at once. nothing is typical. they take a lot of chances with the production. this is definitely in my top ten if not my top five. riyl: milemarker, slowride, bear vs. shark
Wow, the first review of a wonderful band.......2004-05-01
I recently went to see these guys live with a bunch of other bands in detroit for a "jade tree record label" tour thing. I have to say that they are an amazing live band and that anyone should try and go see them. That being said, this album is really really good. It has a good blend of melody with edge and it does it flawlessly. The guitars are somewhat raw sounding which gives it a good edge. I'm very surprised no one has reviewed this record yet, so i figured this band deserves recognition.
