The Who's mighty catalog of beautiful, poignant, and often silly pop songs bashed out with Cassius Clay finesse has suffered in the past at the hands of multiple, butcher-shop best-ofs and horrible packaging. But this thrilling band--undeniably one of ye classicke rocke's greatest--gets the career-spanning entry-point compilation it deserves with the double-disc Ultimate Collection. The songs included here are no-brainers, for the most part--if they aren't huge hits like "My Generation," "I Can See for Miles," or "Baba O'Riley," they're long-standing fan favorites such as "Boris the Spider," "Pure and Easy," and "Squeeze Box." And while this reviewer wishes different songs were chosen from Tommy, and more than one tune was gathered from their arguably finest (and definitely silliest) album, The Who Sell Out, this record really isn't for fans (aside from the total trainspotter types) but for newcomers. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Probably is ultimate.......2007-07-01

Definitely a great job on the collection and the booklet is worth a lot of the price as well.

5 out of 5 stars If You Only Want To Own One Who Set..........2007-06-29

"The Ultimate Collection" should be it.Perfect selection of classic songs(just check the track list),excellent sound quality, cool booklet featuring memorablia, informative liner notes and recording dates to every song included make this ready made for the casual fan who just the cream of the crop of this legendary band.

4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to one of the best Rock bands in the world - ever!.......2007-06-05

I must admit that one of my greatest mistakes as a Rock music fan, was missing to follow the career of The Who until TOMMY was issued as a movie (1975). Since then, I found that The Who is such a great British Rock band and a landmark in the story of Rock music, in the same level of the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin or other magnificent British Rock packs (Yes, ELP, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc.).
I'm sure there are other Who compilations still available, who will satisfy classic Rock purists more than this "Ultimate". However, if you're just trying to increase your knowledge of how good British Rock became in the 1960s and 1970s, this The Who collection at no doubt will lead you to get later their entire album collection. Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars This Is Real Music........2007-05-19

The Who are one of the top 5 greatest rock groups ever. Thats just not debatable. Listen to this collection and you will see why they are now legends of music. There have been many greatest hits albums for The Who because they have made so many classics. But this one beats all the other ones by far. It's got everyone of there gigantic hits and every cult-fan favorite. Boris The Spider and Eminence Front were not big hits, but they are still very popular among Who fans(me being one of them). And then you have all the basics: Baba O'Riley,Long Live Rock,Who Are You,My Generation,Pinball Wizard and many more. Overall, this is 35 songs of rock greatness. There will never be another group like The Who. They changed the face of music. Just listen to this CD and you will feel better. You will just feel happier. Long Live The Who!

4 out of 5 stars The Who for Beginners.......2007-05-07

This CD is The Who- 101 for any new Who fan that you would like to acclimate with the band...like your kids, for example. Great listening for old fans, as well.

Album Description

The artist who will forever be known as Prince-and could fittingly be known as "The Artist"-is one of the most brilliant, versatile and influential musical forces of his, or any, time. Prince took R&B and regally marched it into genre-blurring horizons previously unknown, fusing rock, funk, soul, psychedelia, pop, and singer-songwriter aesthetics into a sound that was mind-bending and booty-shaking. Sensual, literate, explosive, and groundbreaking, his artistry never stopped evolving and the hits and acclaim never stopped coming. His adventurous reinventions, bold experimentation, stellar instrumental and composing skills and genius for showmanship have placed him high in the pantheon of all-time superstars. "Unique" doesn't begin to describe his royal powers, showcased herein on the first-ever two-disc compilation of his masterful Warner Bros. years.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars worth a king's ransom.......2007-07-17

I had been hoping something like this would come along... the ultimate collection of the best of Prince. Sure, there were other songs I wish had been included (and the original version of Raspberry Beret) but overall, this is an awersome CD.

3 out of 5 stars His royal badness.......2007-03-13

Before all the negative votes start piling up, let it be known that I come to praise Prince, not to bury him.

While I am perfectly happy to have a lot of these songs on one disc, I am also disappointed that a few songs are missing. Add to that I really don't care about "rare dance mixes" (yawnnnnnnn), then I am the rare listener to have issues with the second disc. I would have been much happier with "Kiss," "Pop Life" and "Raspberry Beret" in their album versions, instead we are forced to listen to dopey raps and cornball dialogue. Hardly the stuff of genius, even if I believe Prince to be one.

I am also perfectly happy to get a single disc with the cream of doff albums like "Parade" or "LoveSexy." Prince had his run of unbeatabilty that lasted up to "Purple Rain." But after that, even for a boy-wonder, things got spotty. That said, I do wish the "Batman" stuff was here, and maybe he'd have switched "Nothing Compares 2U" with "AnotherLoverHoleInYourHead." These being my personal quibbles, of course.

Prince was the soul machine of the 80's...an unstoppable force of nature that packed dancefloors all while charting his own course. He took risks and made them pay off (or not, if you think about the "Under The Cherry Moon" movie). But he played guitar like a Hendrix and funked like James Brown with an admitted Joni Mitchell fixation. What is not to love? The three star rating is for the clumsily compiled songs here, not for the merit of the music.

Now when are we getting the classic albums remastered?

1 out of 5 stars No "Ultimate" compilation at all! Extended versions are the worst ever!.......2007-03-06

I got this album with the idea of getting what I thought was a reasonable good compilation of Prince's greatest hits. Well... CD 1 is okay... But... What about CD 2? The 'Extended' and 'Dance Mix' versions of "Little Red Corvette", "Rapsberry Beret", "Let's Go Crazy" and "Kiss" REALLY SUCK! Why to avoid the excellent, original versions? The people at Rhino made a really bad choice on issuing this awful compilation and titling it as "ULTIMATE"!!
I would prefer to return this awful "Ultimate" compilation, get my money back and try buying Prince albums individually!!

5 out of 5 stars The Super Bowl Is At Halftime.......2007-02-05

In the hours leading to the Super Bowl, my prediction for the point in the show that will exceed the hype is halftime when Prince takes to the stage.

He was the icon of the music industry back in the day as a songwriter, producer and performer; his creative genius was that of Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Sly Stone, George Clinton & Phil Spector.

The two CDs feature 28 tracks, with 11 remixes on the second CD, including Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Kiss - and my favorite track - Pop Life. The original cuts on the first CD are classics; my highlights are I Wanna Be Your Lover, Controversy, 1999, I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain.

This is truly an ultimate Prince collection and shows him at the top of his game with the major record label. Now if only the football surrounding the concert will be just a little entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate!!!.......2007-02-01

When we say Ultimate, It is done by a long process of things. This CD is no exception to the case. Warner music has done it again. Giving us a great selection of one of it all time hottest and most versatile artist. This retrospective CD is a great introduction of how really talented Prince is. Not only do you get the most popular, but a bonus CD of some long awaited Extended and rare dance hit collectables. The only downside to this is that there are still many tracks unavalible. Like for example*(Anotherloverholenyohead Extended version), Love or Money (B side of "kiss" single), Girl (Long version), Sexy Dancer(Dance mix), Erotic City(Dance Mix), America (Dance mix) and the list goes on and on. Nevertheless, it is still a great selection of tunes to own. Although, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Ultimate Prince 2 in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Survivor Compilation CD Thus Far.......2007-07-28

If you're a fan of Survivor you'll love this one. The remastered sound as well as the song list just can't be beat. Hard to find gems (not included on most Survivor compilations) include "Man against the world", "Desperate Dreams", "Caught In The Game", "American Heartbeat" and the unforgettable track "First Night". Other tracks included here are a part of Survivors phenominal hit career such as, "Eye of the Tiger", "The Search Is Over", "Burning Heart", "I Can't Hold Back", "Is this Love?" and "High On You" (just to name a few).

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Survivor.......2007-03-27

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Into the Night!.......2007-03-15

Ok I had seen this song on hear and figured it was a lame remake made as an attempt to reclaim rock roots. Little did I know that this was originally a Survivor song. The CD as a whole is great. I grew up with more of the "pop" survivor with Jimi Jamison on vocals. The earlier stuff with Dave Bickler on vocals beyond this greatest hits album was really rockin'. Hence the album offers a nice blend of the pop songs that revitalized their career in the mid-eighties and the harder edged songs that started them out. It is a must have for even the casualest of Survivor fans and for those who don't know they did have more songs than "Eye of the Tiger." Add this one to the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Survivor"The Best" In the Top 10 best rock and roll bands of all time.......2006-07-07

its amazing how much of a great and wonderful band these guys are , dow i have all their albums except the first and last {yeah coicidentally}every song they put out is perfect rock and roll and this one is a perfect hit album and much more.Even dow
I think their best song is between "Ever Since The World...." and "Santa Ana Winds" this is still a great compilation of one of the best rock and roll bands of all time well they're definitley in my top 10. And going back actually im most certain that "Santa Ana Winds" was without a doubt their best song. With such an incredible piano masterpiece at the beginning its just a beautiful song overall, i really cant get enough of it. But yeahh this Definite Album is a must for any music fan.I would also advice you to get all their albums which i think r all classiks, That signature sound they have is ahhh..... so mindblowing!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best 'Greatest Hits' Available.......2006-04-21

First I would like to say that I don't own this cd. I did not even know it existed until today, but I do own a lot of Survivor Stuff...including all of the Jimi Jamison Survivor cds. This is the best of the lot of Greatest Hits by the band. Popular Girl???? Popular Girl was not a single nor was it a radio hit nor have I heard Survivor do the song in concert so all these people griping about that song should relax and play Vital Signs or make their own compilation. This cd already has four tracks from that cd.....all four singles. There are tracks missing from this cd that I like but everyone has different tastes and I udnerstand that. The one glaring ommision to me is How Much Love. That was a fairly popular single of theres in the 80's off When Seconds Count. I think I will buy this cd there is some stuff I don't own. Would be interested to hear their version of Rockin Into The Night. Other tracks I recommend that are not on this greatest hits - Jackie Don't Go, Tell Me I am the One, It's the Singer Not the Song, She's a Star and Too Hot To Sleep. All better songs than Popular Girl.....in my opinion. As a Survivor Fan I recommend this cd over past compilations. At least Caught in the Game is here and that song was ignored previously.

In its day, the British prog-rock band Yes's three-letter name was a four-letter word to many diehard rock & roll fans. In time, though, its musical hallmarks have become intrinsic to college radio, that arbiter of cool. Its epic instrumental suites foretold jam bands, and its rapturously twee vocals were echoed in later groups like the Flaming Lips and the Polyphonic Spree. Packed into this three-CD set are tracks dating from Yes's origin as a uniquely virtuosic folk-rock act, covering Simon & Garfunkel's "America" of all things, to its resurrection in the mid-1980s in the hands of producer Trevor Horn, who would later gain renown with Art of Noise and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. In between are its cornerstone hits, the suite-like "I've Seen All Good People," "Long Distance Runaround," and "Yours Is No Disgrace." Inevitably, the later work, from the early 1990s on, fails to match the joy and rawness of the earlier recordings (sounds amplified thanks to remastering), but there are some new treats, including a spirited acoustic rendition of the band's signature "Roundabout." --Marc Weidenbaum

1 out of 5 stars Not even good enough for the casual Yes fan.......2007-07-26

If there is one thing that Yes might have overdone, is release so many greatest hits albums, compiliation albums, Live albums, and I believe a box set. And now this? I understand its an 35th aniversery edition CD, but it just not worth the price tag. What you get is some popular Yes tracks, along with some of the obscure tracks that they take off their later albums (1994 and on) Disc three contains some previously unreleased tracks, but once again, its just not worth the purchase. If you are a casual Yes fan, get one of the many complilation CD's, which has many more well known, and better Yes songs on it. If you are a Yes fanatic, theh best thing to do is purchase the studio and live albums. There is so much great material the casual fan might not care for on lets say "Close to the Edge," "Going for the One", "Time and a Word","Drama" and "Relayer" . Those albums are a much better investment fot the Yes fanatic then this. I even reccomend "Open you Eyes" "Big Genarator" or "Magnicfication" for more modern Yes albums. Just avoid this as its nothing you havent heard before a million times.

5 out of 5 stars Prog Rock Masterpiece!!.......2007-07-07

To see Yes perform live is nothing short of incredible. But to see Wakeman, Howe, Anderson, Squire, and White perform together again is a living miracle from Heaven!! Wakeman and Howe are nothing short of awesome at the end of South Side Of The Sky. It's a shame not getting to hear this kind of music on the radio anymore. RIP FM radio.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Yes.......2007-06-09

The Ultimate Yes is a great album who has the best songs of the group. I'm very happy with third CD who presents the acustics songs like roundbout and the lovely show me...

4 out of 5 stars Yes to Yes after 35 years.......2007-01-12

Yes was the first rock and roll group that I ever liked, aside from the Beatles of course. Many years ago in college I felt energized by the great Yes songs from The Yes Album: Starship Trooper, Yours is No Disgrace, and I've Seen All Good People. This 3 CD collection has those, of course, as well as Roundabout, their big hit that followed The Yes Album. I had forgotten that they had also produced the hit songs Owner of a Lonely Heart and Leave It, delightful surprises after so many years. There are 31 tracks total on the 3 CDs and I'm not convinced that all 31 tracks are as interesting as the ones I've mentioned but, nevermind, listening to many of these songs will transport the original Yes fans back to the '70s and many could be hits with today's young people.

3 out of 5 stars Only acoustic music pay the CD.......2006-11-03

All Yes coletanias is the same. The same song and everything. If you have all as me do not by this. This CD has the value only for the acoustic songs. This is realy very good ones.

i am an ozzy superfan and own ALL of his solo albums and most of his stuff from his Black Sabbath days. sadly this album is the one that sucks the most out of them all. i mean one of his albums has to be the worst and this one is unfortunately it. ya ultimate sin and shot in the dark are great tracks but the rest is mostly filler material. if you want to know what ozzy is really about and what he represents pick up bark at the moon, diary of a madman and blizzard of ozz. these were ozzy's defining moments in rock n' roll. also get tribute to hear a true guitar wizard (randy rhoads; ozzy's all time best guitarist) put on a live guitar clinic. then get the no more tears album which is an EXCELLENT work (featuring guitarist zakk wylde).

4 out of 5 stars This album shouldn't be disregarded as the worst!!!.......2007-06-17

I am not a huge Ozzy fan but want to make things straightened out.
Allmusic.com, which people refer to often, grades this awesome album below mediocre. The critque seems to target the general hair rock of mid 80's. This album has everything to constitute a great hevey metal music, except for solid chemistry between Ozzy and Jake.

In fact, Ozzy's voice does not impress me as usual but the guitar blows my mind. Here in the Ultimate Sin, Jake E. Lee explodes his anger in his playing, the most agressive and heaviest guitar among Ozzy's albums. Jake deserves better than what people said about this album.

2 out of 5 stars BLAME MOTLEY CREWS 1985s "THEATRE OF PAIN" I MEAN SHAME, FOR THIS ILL CONCIEVED SIN..................2007-06-16

The line up in 1985,1986: Ozzy Osbourne: vocals, Jake E.Lee: Guitar, Phil Soussan: Bass Guitar, Randy Castillo: Drums. Great lineup, there is no question about it. I bought this recording on vinyl in Feb. 1986, hoping for a great record to follow the awesome successes of Blizzard 1980, Diary 1981, Bark 1983. I was very dissapointed with The Ultimate sin. The reason for my opinion is not the great band lineup Ozzy had with this record, it was that Ozzy decided to go glam rock like bands of the mid to late 1980s. Motley Crews first two records were great, Crews debut album: 1982s "Too Fast For Love", 1983s "Shout At The Devil" they stuck to hard crisp rock, metal. Then "Theatre Of Pain" came out in the summer of 1985, which was a total Crue sellout to glam rock and softer music. Even Crews dress style made me realize they sold out to the Glam rock which would dictate 1980s rock bands. "Theatre Of Pain" was a total turn from Crews first two albums when they cared about thier music and not making "Smokin In The Boys Room" remake. I remember after listening to the vinyl of "Theatre Of Pain" for the first time, that day in July 1985, and being totally amazed how the Crew sold out thier music and thier early fans. From that day on I refer to "Theatre Of Pain" as "Theatre Of Shame". I mention "Theatre of Pain", because I believe when Ozzy got out of the rehab and got his life back together in 1985, he saw the Glam rock image Motley Crew had with "Theatre Of Pain" and figured this will be an image he would go with, with "The Ultimate Sin". I really believe "Theatre Of Pain" influenced "The Ultimate Sin" that is the reason for its soft glam rock style. I will say Jake E Lees guitaring on "Sin" is awesome. Phil Soussan does a really good job on bass guitar, Randy Castillo handles the drums well, my only complaint is I wish the drums on "Sin" were a little harder, to me they are softer and don't sound right on an Ozzy recording. If Ozzy went the glam rock look and sound, what a horrible mistake he made with "The Ultimate Sin". I wonder if the iron maiden herself Sharon Osbourne advised Ozzy to the glam rock style just so Ozzy could keep up with the times in the mid 1980s and keep the cash register flowing for the Osbournes. The band lineup is great, it is just a shame it had to be wasted on this ill concieved effort. I have listened to "The Ultimate Sin" many times and after 21 years this recording has not grown on me. "The Ultimate Sin" is a pure sellout of the mid 1980s glam rock invasion. The song Ozzy hates the most is the song I like and the best on "The Ultimate Sin" that is "Shot In The Dark". That is part of the reason I bought "The Ultimate Sin" the other reason was it was Ozzy. I had a friend who I was in high school with who did not care for "The Ultimate Sin", saw Ozzy with Metallica on tour in April 1986 and he told me The Ultimate Sin sounded great live. Metallica was still pumping out great metal in those days with the 1986 metal epic "Master of Puppets", before they bit the sellout mode with their 1991 black album and have continued since. I even like Ozzy releases from 1988s "No Rest For the Wicked", 2007s "Black Rain"(No Rest for the Wicked (Exp), (Black Rain), better than "The Ultimate Sin". I will always love the Ozzman, but "The Ultimate Sin" is by far the Ozzmans worst. That is why many people bash this recording. I believe Ozzy did hate "Ultimate Sin" that is why he came back with a vegence with his next two releases 1988s "No Rest For The Wicked" and 1991s "No More Tears". Ozzy went back to what made him great with these two afore mentioned releases. Those readers who like "The Ultimate Sin" I do respect your views on this recording and learn from them negative or positive. I'm giving "The Ultimate Sin" two stars only because it is Ozzy and because of the great band lineup, and the great Jake E. Lee, and of course "Shot In The Dark".

5 out of 5 stars Jake E Lee.......2007-05-30

5 out of 5 stars I haven't found a better one.......2006-05-26

An exceptionally well-sequenced collection. I usually don't like BEST OF discs that scramble chronology, but the people who put this together did a great job; the different styles of production keep this interesting all the way through. In this context, I can even appreciate his poppy early work. Excellent sound. And it's got most of the songs from "Harold and Maude"! Ignore the cover and GET THIS (used).

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION.......2003-05-08

For the die-hard Cat Stevens fan who wants to hear the 'very best of Cat Stevens' I'd say buy every CD he made. For the peripherally interested, this is the album to get, in my opinion. Not only does it contain a large portion of his most favoured period [Tillerman/Teaser] but it also contains a bit from all his periods. This is Cat Stevens in a nutshell. It includes at least one song from every album. My favourites are Moonshadow, Land of freelove adn goodbye and Into white.

5 out of 5 stars Practically Perfect.......2002-03-19

This CD has all of the tracks that you'll ever need, TERRIFIC sound quality, and even a cover that depicts how beautiful, spiritual and dreamy the music is (though listening to the music is still better than looking at some kid doing Yoga). Opt for the import -- it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2000-11-22

Cat Stevens is another artist I grew up as a teenager. His music speaks to the human soul. I almost forgotten about his contribution "If you want to sing out, sing out" to the film classic "Harold and Maude". It was like reacquainting myself with an old friend. Songs like "Father and Song" and "Morning Has Broken" moves me in a way no other artist can. I consider his version of "Another Saturday Night" far superior to the original by Al Green. Obviously this collection of Cat Stevens songs has four extra tracks that his greatest hits cd doesn't have. For anyone interested in buying a compilation of Cat Stevens songs, this ultimate collection is the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Songs with feelings.......2000-04-28

For those who don't know his work, this is a great CD with all his major hits, a Collection of songs that reveal all sorts of emotions, from happiness to sorrow. For those who do know his work, this is just another CD with his most famous titles. I already knew his work, but i liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Dennis DeYoung - Ultimate Collection.......2007-07-05

Im glad I purchased this cd, this is a great collection of hits by Dennis DeYoung

4 out of 5 stars Very solid collection.......2007-04-06

Those who don't like the fact that Dennis 'went soft' in his later years with Styx may not like a great deal of this album, but even they must appreciate DeYoung's sense of craft and showmanship, not to mention his ability to write succinct and memorable, yet often deeply personal, lyrics.

The ballad count is high here, so the CD as a whole doesn't really ever gain momentum, but there are many excellent tunes featured, including the odd uptempo number that demonstrates the artist's continued versatility.

It opens with his four solo singles entries, of which only 'Desert Moon' was a bona fide hit (none of the other three even reached the top 50). The best of these is the superb 'Don't Wait For Heroes', which has a great message, and one that I have found personally inspiring over the years. It's essentially 'don't give up' but it goes much deeper than that, and the fact that Dennis has practised what he's preaching counts for a lot as well.

Of the remaining tracks, while there are no real clunkers there are only a handful that truly stand out, especially 'Black Wall', DeYoung's tribute to Vietnam vets, and another life-affirming tune in 'Unanswered Prayers'. Possibly my favourite track on the entire CD though is one of the ballads, 'Beneath the Moon' from his non-charting 'Boomchild' album. Featuring a great hook and a pretty decent lyric, this one would have been a smash if promoted properly (As witness the reformed Styx soon after hit #3 with 'Show mt the Way'), but unfortunately this was released on MCA at a time where the only artist they were bothering to promote, it seems, was Tiffany! Oh well.

Overall a high standard of songs is featured throughout, and while there are undoubtedly other strong cuts from his solo albums, this collection will suffice for most people, and is well worth the trouble for those curious about what DeYoung sounded like outside of his work with Styx.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2007-01-13

Deyoung of course, was one of the founding members of Styx. This album is a compilation of material from his solo albums. The album as a whole is a mixed bag. Deyoung's penchant for sappy ballads is what turned many rockers away from him, and there are quite a few of these to be found here. On the other hand, when he wants too, Deyoung can write very good lyrics and rockers. Those can be found here as well. On the negative side, the sappy ballads (and some of the harder stuff) all have a very 80's sound to them. In fact much of this album, even the good stuff, sounds dated. The first half of the album is pretty bad with only the title track to his Desert Moon (and the only true hit on this collection) standing out. The second half of the disc is much better. The rocking "Southbound Ryan" is about the Dan Ryan expressway in Chicago and his love for the city in general. I have driven the Dan Ryan many times and can relate to this song. "Black Wall" is a song about Vietnam and is an excellent example of Deyoung at his best and sounds very Styx like. "Harry's Hands" is an excellent character study of Deyoung's father and his struggles as a blue collar worker in post war America. The rocking "Boomchild" is a fist pumping anthem for the baby boom generation and another really good tune. The album closes out with a new (at the time) version of the Styx classic "Grand Illusion". Overall this is a nice collection of his solo stuff, and if you can get past the sappy stuff, there is some good material to be found here.

5 out of 5 stars Dennis DeYoung Is Awesome.......2006-09-13

In most cases as musical artists get older their sound fades away. Not so with Dennis DeYoung every song on this CD is a classic and I could honestly see Styx performing some of these. He is truly missed by alot of Styx fans. He was the heart and soul of Styx. And he shows it. My favorite songs on here are "This Is The Time", "Boomchild", "Black Wall", "Gravity", "Call Me", and "Desert Moon". But what I really apreciate on this album is the remix of Grand Illusion with the Orchestra I think that that is a paticular nice touch by him. Dennis DeYoung is one of the greatest singer/songwriter/musicians of all-time. He's one of my favorites. I highly suggest to anyone that you buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars, and that's just for Destert Moon .......2006-05-18

Collectors will want this CD because it has the full LP version of Desert Moon. When it comes to Adult Contemporary music, is there a more moving guitar lick at the finish than this one?

4 out of 5 stars He Is Still Through Extremes.......2005-08-11

Arguably, when I hear a lot of acts right now in the industry, they arguably all sound alike, without any amicable essence of pop, and soul. It is just a shame older artists aren't around for anyone right now but classic radio. Billy Joel is just one of those acts that has defined the essence of great pop music. Yet, it is just sad that the real only place right now you can truly hear his defiant music gems is the Broadway musical Movin' Out. Still, those gems that the piano man has made keep coming back. While he ahs also had so many truly showcased hits as well, there is always one that can be more defiant at a time.

The Ultimate Collection, is a double album reflecting Billy's legendary career. Arguably, this was reflected very well in reflection, and trims down the fat from the well-recognized three greatest hits volumes. The collection really does deliver with so many great hits like Piano Man, I Go To Extremes, We Didn't Start The Fire, the bluesy soul New York State Of Mind, as well as lesser known tracks omitted from Billy's previous collections like the overlooked Modern Woman, and Honesty to name just a few. Yet, there is a few disadvantages to this collection. One of them is that the record does overlook a few great gems including Big Shot, And So It Goes, and the simplistic Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel.)

Despite a few omissions, Billy Joel's The Ultimate Collection is a much more defiant collection than most of the other ones on the market. This also showcases much better than the 2001 Essential Billy Joel. This is arguably, a must have for anybody who loves to hear those wonderful melodies the Piano Man has carried for years.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the ultimate Billy Joel compilation.......2005-04-16

In his American homeland, Billy became one of the most successful singers of the twentieth century - he was third in the list of best selling solo artists behind Garth Brooks (whose American country hits included a cover of Shameless, written by Billy although Billy's version is omitted from this collection) and Elton John. Billy has never achieved that level of success elsewhere although he has built up a significant international following.

Success came slowly for Billy but he finally made the big time with his fifth album, The stranger, originally released in 1977. Its most famous song, Just the way you are, became a major American hit and also gave Billy his first UK hit, making the top twenty. Less than a year later, Barry White covered it and also made the UK top twenty. Other notable tracks from the album to be found on this compilation are Moving out and She's always a woman.

Great as that album was, Billy released an even greater album in 1983 - An innocent man. This set included Uptown girl (a UK number one hit), Tell her about it, The longest time, Leave a tender moment alone and the brilliant title track. With this album, Billy confirmed his status as a truly international performer.

Billy recorded many other fine albums from which he had plenty of American hits, some of which also charted in the UK. His most successful hits from these albums include It's still rock and roll to me, My life and We didn't start the fire. He occasionally sang about controversial topics, as in Goodnight Saigon and Allentown.

This is the best retrospective of Billy's career, including all his classic hits and much else besides. Plenty of great songs have been omitted but if you want those, you'll just have to buy the original albums. Even if you plan to do just that, this set provides a good start to your collection. On the other hand, you might just want one collection of Billy's music and in that case, this should satisfy your needs.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Joel's 'Greatest Hits' albums.......2004-10-14

This is an extrordinary collection of Billy Joel's music. It contains so many songs. I liked that not all of them were Top 10 hits, etc... There were a few surprises in here. The songs come from so many albums, there's something here for everyone. This is great for car rides because there are so many songs and it takes up tons of time. Plus, theses songs are so much fun to listen to. Billy Joel's music is always something you can tap your foot to, but there's so much complexion in his songs. He's wonderfully romantic. His songs are perfect for the 'first dance' at a wedding or something like that. In this collection you get staples like 'Piano Man', 'Uptown Girl', 'River of Dreams', 'We Didn't Start the Fire', etc... but we also get gems like 'Allentown', 'I Go to Extremes', 'You're my Home' and 'New York State of Mind'. I don't see how anyone cannot like Billy Joel. His music is so universal and so well known, and for good reason.

5 out of 5 stars GREATest hits!.......2001-09-25

This cd only has three problems with it, it does not have: only the good die young, just a fantasy, and and so it goes. Other than that, this collection is the one to own. It condenses Vol. 1 and 2 and Vol. 3 on to one CD, and saves you the money of buying all three to get the hits on this one collection. So, go out and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The near definitive Billy Joel anthology.......2001-04-18

Forget all the greatest hits volumes issued in the U.S. This 2-CD collection packs in almost twice as many tracks, including most of the great hits and key album tracks. Most of the hits not included ("Big Shot", "Pressure") are ones I don't care to ever hear again. However, one egregious omission is "Only the Good Die Young," so you need to also get the remastered version of "The Stranger," which is worth having not only for that, but also for the title track and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" (also not included here).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of 20 Years.......2003-10-25

Made in UK in 2003, Serial# SANDD-189, Playing Time 158:02

I usually despise releases like this... I've seen (and purchased) so many best of, anthology, collections, millennium, very best compilations that keep deceiving me, either because of track selection, but more generally because record labels still think that putting more than 40 minutes of music on those will hinder sales of their back catalogue, that I wasn't really looking forward to this "Ultimate Collection".

And URIAH HEEP already have dozens of retrospectives, so why would anyone pick up this one? Well, here's why:

1) This 2CD-set contains 34 tracks, with 158 minutes of music (those discs are packed!!!);
2) the remastering job is fabulous;
3) the tracks are presented chronologically;
4) all tracks are full-length versions (NO edits!!!)
5) you get all facets of the band, from the heavy "Gypsy" to the soft "Come Away Melinda", the kaleidoscopic "Magician's Birthday", the haunting "Wonderworld", the anthemic "Easy Livin'", the hair-raising "Blood Red Roses", and then some (actually, 28 more!!!)

And no, I'm not a member of the band or an unconditional fan...

This anthology covers the first 20 years of their recordings (1971-1991), and it's not focused only on "commercial" or radio-friendly material (ever heard the full length version of "July Morning" on the radio?).

To the novice, this set is THE best place to start without spending a fortune; to the initiated, over 2 and a half hours of cherished material covering a wide spectrum of genres so loved by many Heepsters.

I just HAVE to play it again...
