Album Description

"A remarkable recording." - REPERTOIRE

The nature of Alexander's Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritic prize.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spirited performance of charming work.......2007-03-10

This performance of Alexander's Feast is, in my opinion, exactly right for the work; beautiful, clear voices singing the solos with good diction, a lovely balance in the small chorus, and superb playing of appropriate instruments for the piece and for the period. The notes on the flyer are also excellent, presenting the background and intention of the work.

5 out of 5 stars Alexander's Feast - English version.......2006-02-26

This recording is a very complete version of Alexander's Feast, following the composer's practice of inserting other pieces to create a performance of appropriate length. Excellent soloists, orchestra, and chorus. A high quality recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of Handel's great works.......2005-11-19

I just attended a live performance of Alexander's Feast and I saw many people who probably never heard anything else than Messiah, suddenly finding out that there is more to Handel than Hallelujah chorus. This music is exciting and original, you may know several arias like "War he said is toil and trouble" or "Revenge!" but it is great as a complete work. It was written for St. Cecilia's Day celebration, then re-written several times, but it remains as a beautiful example of Handel's mastery in choral composition and writing showcase arias. The soloists are great, especially Ian Partridge, and the chorus is outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of one of Handel's great works.

5 out of 5 stars Handel's Great "Feast" in an Impeccable Rendition.......2005-08-22

"Alexander's Feast," Handel's 1736 setting of Dryden's ode in honor of St. Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music) is a masterpiece and a delight, but its odd length - too long for a mixed program, too short for a full evening - gave Handel trouble and apparently still presents a problem: this is at present the only recording of this inspired work in the catalogue, though some good ones have come and gone. Fortunately, this reissue of the Sixteen's 1990 version is first-rate, in fact the best I ever recall hearing, with chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor all in top form. Furthermore, music director Harry Christophers has wisely chosen to include the two concerti - one for harp, the other for organ - that Handel inserted in his original performances. Not only do they lengthen the piece to a satisfactory 115', they serve a satisfactory dramatic purpose by representing respectively the power of music in its pagan form - the bard Timotheus's lyre represented by the harp - and Christian - Cecilia's (apocryphal) organ. Both receive sparkling interpretations here.
If you enjoy such Handel works as "L'Allegro..." and "Acis and Galatea," you will certainly enjoy "Alexander's Feast," which finds the composer in peak form, responding with eagerness to the high quality of the English verse before him. And it's hard to imagine a better way to get to know it than this wonderful performance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure melodic death.......2005-07-02

A must have for any Melodic Death fan. Better than Decent into Chaos in my opinion because there are alot more melotic songs and wider range of vocals. They even throw old school vocals which seem out of place, but are actually quite good. Every song maybe exept for that one ballad is brutally beautiful. Go out and buy it now!

4 out of 5 stars So Much Better Than Descent Into Chaos.......2005-06-27

This album makes it seem like Gus G. had a brain fart for his next project. I saw one reviewer for Descent say that the riffs reminded him of Arch Enemy. Well, that's true...for Sweet Vengeance. The tracks are kind of boring on Descent, and the guitarwork just does not vary as much as it does on this one.

I'm not a fan of Englund's singing style, nor am I fan of Lindberg. I could have done without Englund's presence on this album entirely, but luckily he does not get that annoying except on "Circle of Pain". Luckily, Gus G. and, yes, Lindberg save this track. Lindberg is necessary for this album. He doesn't sound very good on Descent, but he has never sounded better than he does on Sweet Vengeance. His vocals just fit here. And the guitarwork is interesting enough that you can just ignore him most of the time anyway if you want to.

Highlights on this album include the absolutely magnificent "The Glow of the Setting Sun", "Elusive Emotion", and "Ethereal". I don't really like "The Tremor" much for some reason...I think Gus G. is capable of so much more than that.

But all in all, this is worth your time and money. Considering Descent is more expensive, this would definitely be the right choice between the two.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2005-02-19

Don't get me wrong. I like this cd. I really do. But I really wanted to like it more. I downloaded the Tremor mp3, and was blown away by it. Unfortunately, this is probably the best track on the cd. That's not to say that the other tracks are bad, but they just don't live up to my expectations.

To be perfectly honest, the clean vocals dropped this from a solid 4 star release to the three and a half that I feel that it deserves. I really think that if you have the great talent of Tomas Lindberg at your disposal, you really shouldn't be having somebody jump in and do clean vocals. I've seen a lot of reviews saying that it's great to have the clean vocals, and maybe I'm completely wrong, but for whatever reason, I just can't get past them. I'd rather hear Lindberg screaming. With that said, the rest of this album is really good.

In addition to the tremor, glow of the setting sun is another standout track. The rest of the CD is good, but those tracks are, in my opinion, truly great.

I would recommend this album, but there are many cds that are better that you should get before this. Another reviewer has listed several bands, and that's pretty much a good list, but add Callenish Circle, because they rock.

5 out of 5 stars Melodeath Genius.......2005-02-02

With Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates, The Crown) on vocals it's hard to imagine this being anything less than a good melodeath metal time. That holds true with this album, however there is one little thing that needs to be mentioned: this album is in fact one of the very best melodeath offerings ever!

It's of course nice to hear real melodeath done by masters of the craft in a time when the Gothenberg sound has either left its roots for a more Americanized nu-metal (In Flames, Soilwork), or has been copied and badly imitated too many times to retain its original value - the high value sound of At The Gates for example. Nightrage present such a beautiful sound, and do so expertly.

I can't really say much to explain to you the beauty of this album. The vocals are ferocious and heartfelt, the guitars heavy and melodic without falling into mindnumbing repetion even once, the drums varied and always just right. Simply put: this is how melodic death metal should sound - a tad technical, very aggressive, rich, groove-laden, vibrant, and chock full of rage. It's fist-pumping fun that still makes me want to scream, and I haven't felt that way about melodeath in a long while.

This is a must-have for any melodeath fan, and really, anyone who appreciates good metal in general. Four horns way up.

When guitarist Marios Iliopoulos was forced out of his band of ten years, Greece's highly acclaimed death metal outfit EXHUMATION, perhaps he got mad, but he certainly got even. Relocating to Sweden, he began his quest of finding like-minded musicians interested in being a part of what would shortly become NIGHTRAGE.

Answering Marios' call was fellow shredder and long-time confidant Gus G. (known for his outstanding work in DREAM EVIL, MYSTIC PROPHECY, and FIREWIND.), legendary screamer Tomas Lindberg (AT THE GATES, THE CROWN, GREAT DECEIVER, and LOCK UP), drummer Per M. Jensen (THE HAUNTED), clean vocalist Tom S. Englund (EVERGREY), and rounding out the line-up, the as of yet known French bassist, Brice Leclercq. Now, with his battalions assembled, Marios prepares for "Sweet Vengeance".

Recorded at the famous Studio Fredman with producer extraordinaire Fredrik Nordstrom (ARCH ENEMY, IN FLAMES, OPETH, etc.), "Sweet Vengeance" overflows with bombastic bursts of enraged melodic death coercion, a la DIMENSION ZERO, with tranquil acoustic passages here and there. Each song blasts forth with memorable riffing and stellar drum work, topped off with vicious shrieks of retribution and pain.

"Sweet Vengeance" is a promising beginning for NIGHTRAGE, with essential moments being the punishing opener "The Tremor", "Hero", "At The Ends Of The Earth" (both of which feature impeccable vocal interplay between Tomas and Tom), and the savage "Macabre Apparition".

The albums' closing track, "The Howls Of The Wolves", is a serene instrumental that may be metaphorically stating that Marios is now at ease within himself after finally unleashing the elusive emotions that had been tormenting him for far too long. Certainly, vengeance is his.

    ok, Protti is not great, but not bad either...and ofcourse, Kraus is consistent and proves to be a prince among tenors...but it is d'Angelo who really makes this live recording... her Caro Nome is ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE...we don't get live singing like that these days (I've heard Andrea Rost, R.A. Swenson, et al)...d'Angelo's shaping of the musical line is to die for as are her timbre and sense of drama...the death scene is also unforgettable...get this, and you'll understand what I'm talking about!

    I got this Lohengrin from the local library, and I tried to get a taste of what I was in for by looking it up here on Amazon.com. But to my dismay there were no reviews. And later, to even greater dismay on my part, I found that there is no reason for such a lack of reviews! For this is a solid Lohengrin. While Peter Hofmann is not the most vocally resplendent Lohengrin (he isn't a Konya or a Domingo), he turns is a good performance, and Karen Armstrong is a passionate Elsa who plays the part admirably. The rest of the cast is strong on the whole. But the real splendors of this set spring from the pit - Woldemar Nelsson (of whom I had never heard until I discovered this recording) leads the Beyreuth Festival orchestra in a burning account. They are a truly Wagnerian orchestra (it would be a shame if they weren't), and Nelsson brings out all the Master's colors. The energy of a live performance just pours out. Never have I heard the preludes and prominent sections played with such an intense timbre. It's amazing to hear.

    Therefore, though this set doesn't match Kempe, Solti, or Leinsdorf overall, it is a strong alternate set that should not be ignored.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Libretto by John Dryden.......2003-04-19

    If Messiah is the greatest Christian oratorio, then I nominate this a candidate for the pagan crown. The poem is high art most worthy of a Handel to set it to music all the while being scrupulous with the text. But no more of my amateurish opinions, here are some random shorts from Winton Dean's liner notes:

    "Alexander's Feast" was an immediate and lasting success. Of Handel's major works only "Acis and Galatia" and Messiah were performed more frequently performed during his life."

    "There are seven accompanied recitatives, the most dramatic of all gestures-- and exceptional number even in a three act work-- all of outstanding quality. Most of them occur in the fourth and sixth stanzas where Handel makes the most of his new technique. When the music has excited the King into fighting his battles over and over again and bread a mad over confidence, Timotheous reduces him to humility and tears by recounting the fate of [Persian Emperor} Darius."

    "A present deity," they shout around:
    "A present deity," the vaulted roofs rebound.
    With ravish'd ears
    The monarch hears,
    Assumes the god,
    Affects to nod,
    And seems to shake the spheres.

    Bacchus' blessings are a treasure,
    Drinking is the soldier's pleasure;
    Rich the treasure,
    Sweet the pleasure,
    Sweet is pleasure after pain.
    Sooth'd with the sound, the king grew vain;
    Fought all his battles o'er again;
    And thrice he routed all his foes; and thrice
    he slew the slain.
    The master saw the madness rise,
    His glowing cheeks, his ardent eyes;
    And, while he heav'n and earth defied,
    Chang'd his hand, and check'd his pride.
    He chose a mournful Muse,
    Soft pity to infuse;
    He sung Darius great and good,
    By too severe a fate,
    Fallen, fallen, fallen, fallen,
    Fallen from his high estate,
    And welt'ring in his blood;
    Deserted, at his utmost need
    By those his former bounty fed;
    On the bare earth expos'd he lies,
    With not a friend to close his eyes.

    " ...Another stroke of genius is Handel's treatment of the famous line "Fallen, fallen, fallen, fallen... He contracts the word to a monosyllable (fall'n), repeats it at unpredictable intervals, both of time and pitch, over pedal notes and staccato violin ostinato, suggests the tragedy of Darius' fall in the harmony, and then varies all these components when the line is repeated by the chorus. It is a supreme example of music's power to enlarge a poetic idea."
