4 out of 5 stars good album what our the bad reveiws for?.......2007-04-08

this is a good album. sure rosemary isnt that good but it still is good. this is a great album for someone who is just getting into the grateful dead. it includes lots of classics casey jones etc. all the songs on here are or were very radio frendliy all the songs they would play of the dead on the radio. buy it its cheap and its good music so dont listen to those reveiws that say not to buy it its good so how is it bad?

4 out of 5 stars A cool collection .......2006-10-13

At the time this album was released it was subject to lp time limitations. Still, even then as now it still is a cool little collection put together by people who worked for the band at the time. It includes the single edit of Turn On Your Lovelight as well as Mexicali Blues from Bob's Ace

1 out of 5 stars A mawkish stew of sentimental rubbish!!!.......2006-07-21

The Greatful Dead were nothing but an infantile gang of cackling tramps. While they fecklessly hawked their cheap ties to K-Mart, they relentlessly puked hour upon hour of gelatinized nonsense onto their pony-tailed legions of unemployed, mind-altered drones. Now, I may not be the spokesperson for the American way, but I'm pretty sure that virulent body odor, marijuana cigarettes, and hay-seed mentalities do NOT make the world go around. Therefore, as we enter the 21st century, let's all try to remember our common humanity, and let us categorically reject the naive and sophomoric blather that has been the ultimate legacy of the silly 1960's. To chuck this unfortunate and ridiculous collection of nursery rhymes into the rubbish would be a good start. Thank you very much. -DW

3 out of 5 stars This is an O.K. "best of" set but..........2006-03-06

Don't waste your time and money with this set. Buy,instead, "The Very Best of The Grateful Dead" which presents many of the songs on this set plus more (17 vs 11 songs). It is also remastered for better sound quality and is a better intro for those entering "The Dead Zone" for the first time.

3 out of 5 stars THE DEAD ZONE.......2005-12-22

GRATEFUL DEAD-SKELETONS FROM THE CLOSET: I don't get it. Perhaps because I have never taken a long strange trip with either the Dead in concert or via some illegal diversion, I've yet to understand what all the hoopla's about. If I were to judge solely from this cleverly titled sampling of "hits" (Jerry and his gang were no more a singles band than Pink Floyd), I'd have to conclude that they were a reasonably talented country/rock/folk ensemble that barely holds my interest beyond FM staples TRUCKIN', FRIEND OF THE DEVIL, and UNCLE JOHN'S BAND. As for TURN ON YOUR LOVE LIGHT, I much prefer the funk-fired Edgar Winter/White Trash concert version, and where oh where is that understated thing of rare beauty, BOX OF RAIN? This collection isn't for true Deadheads (who'd rather hear jams longer than these eleven tunes combined) any more than is it for converting those of us who scratch our noggins and mutter the folowing joke: What did the Deadhead say when his buzz wore off?..."This is the worst @&#$ music I've ever heard!!!"---RATING: THREE BARE FEET

3 out of 5 stars best of? maybe. a good start at any rate.......2007-02-20

From the outset I must confess that I don't own this particular compilation. I do however have all the material that is present here within the context of their original albums.

Whilst there's nothing at all wrong with this album, I'd think think hard about buying it. It contains material from the first three albums. The first two albums are still widely available and priced quite moderately. Further, they've got a bunch of classic material that didn't make it onto this comp. I'd actually put some of these other tracks left off this compilation e.g. "What You Get", "Why'd We Come" in front of other material that was included e.g. "Whole Day Off" The third album, 'Good For Your Soul' is currently deleted and so it can be a little harder to come by. I understand that it may be tempting to purchase this album for its two tracks from GFYS. Fine. But please also hassle A&M to re-release GFYS. You deserve access to these other fine songs as well! :D

Perhaps you should check out the samples of the other albums, "Only a Lad" and "Nothing to Fear" that Amazon offer. If you think the material is interesting then it may be worth your while to take the plunge and pay out a few more dollars cos I think you get a better Boingo for yer buck.

All in all, this is an enjoyable compilation of music. However, don't come crying to me when it's a superfluous item in your collection after you've caught Boingo fever and tracked down their backcatalogue. At any rate, the cover art is nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-01-21

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2005-06-11

This particular release is amazing! There is not one bad song throughout the entire cd. It is one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of it....now that's what I call a great record.

For those of you who have never heard of Oingo Boingo, I would say they are a band that makes music that is almost impossible to describe. Their music is truly unique and is completely different from anything you've ever heard. Although there are a lot of bands that have their own sound, Oingo Boingo adds to their sound diversity by including the use of wind instruments. So I'll make an attempt and say Oingo Boingo is punk meets pop meets new wave meets brass meets weird, and that's about as close as I can get. So give them a listen, you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST "BEST OF" OINGO BOINGO..........2004-01-13

Ok, so Oingo Boingo had more than 3 records for one thing for one to pick and choose songs from to make a best of record. I don't think A&M in the end if ever really wanted to put out a collection of fan favorites or get a music expert's opinion of what "the best" of these 3 records had to offer. With each listen it becomes apparant that the studio wanted a collection of songs that blended nicely together and this collection of songs does just that. I mean, each OB album from the early days' had its own appeal. Good For Your Soul had more of a regee feel, Nothing To Fear had more of a punk-pop feel and Only A Lad had more of a ska/new wave feel. So whatever mood you're in, you can find 10 songs that give into that/those desire(s)...but this collection finds a common ground between songs on each of those albums. So...if you're a fan of Oingo Boingo show your support by buying every Oingo Boingo album ever! But if you'd rather have just a solid music collection with no filler, then get this b/c it's a killer collection of songs by a killer band and it even has one of the best album covers ever! Yeah, there's other memorable and stimulating songs by this band, but I'd rather just stick with this record. OTher songs like "Perfect System" and "Running On Treadmill" are kinda lacking in relevance in my opinion. It's as if the band knew they had a cut off of how little they could put on a record so they (or most likely the producers) wrote what they could and chose the ones that had the best chance of "connecting" with the audience. Well, out of the 30 or or songs the producers chose on those albums, these are the the 12 they would have chosen if they would've waited...although that may have not been possible for various complex reasons...but like I said, if you think more is better then go ahead and buy more albums by this band. This collection is perfectly good for newcomers and just as well for those who simply have an astute taste in music.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite the best.......2003-05-30

What's this? A "best of" Oingo Boingo that doesn't include their biggest hit, "Weird Science"? How can that be? Well, it's because it only includes material from the three albums they recorded for A&M Records. While there is nothing particularly bad here, overall the album was a disappointment to me.

    4 out of 5 stars You git!.......2006-08-10

One thing Skeletons & the Girl-Faced Boys isn't: Boring.

In fact, you can think of a thousand words to describe the debut "Git" -- mad alien electronic festival choirboys comes to mind -- and "boring" will be the last on that list. Basically they sound like the dancier, catchier version of the Animal Collective, plus some smooth vocals.

It starts off with rattly bells, sweeps of shivery synth, and what sounds like a circus UFO passing overhead. Then "See the Way" kicks in with some weird, high pitched vocals that sound like a boys' choir on acid.

One guy occasionally sings out on his own, with oddball lyrics like, "I... always... forget... what she looks like/her voice is... her voice is always changing..." as cowbells and zigzaggy, colourful synth continue to play. It's a wild, dancey little tune that never takes itself seriously.

It doesn't get any more seriously in the electro-flavoured "Git," apparently named for the self-absorbed narrator ("Girl, if you leave/don't wake me up/I got a lot of things to do..."), and the sparkling swirling "There Are Seagulls Who Live In Parking Lots." It's crammed with experimental flourishes and quirks.

But they do take an experimental bender with the mid-length experimental track "There's A Fly In Your Soup And I Put It There," which is basically one long undulating loop of crooning and squeaking. Heck, the final song sounds like a protracted spaceship takeoff, complete with electronic sputters and the sound of liftoff.

"Git" is one of those colourful, enthusiastic little albums that embraces about half a dozen musical genres at once, with little shreds of hip-hop, dance, punk, house, indiepop and experimental stuff. The Skeletons just jumble this all together, over a tight dance rhythm.

A few of the early songs are a bit more simplistic than the rest of the album -- "Git" is pretty quirkless, with just a straightforward electro sound. But in other songs, we get flutes, keyboard, tribal drumming, bells, flashes of synth, ripples of mellotron and weird moans and "oooo" noises in high, androgynous vocals that sing half the time, and make wacky "mouth music" the rest of the time.

Like a dancier, more electronic brother of Animal Collective, the Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys turn out some experimental, expansive "Git." Great fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-12-04

Deconstructivist! you can hear michael Jackson, sea and cake, parliment, and
sometimes party of helicopters (vocally only) blended into who knows what.
    this record is great!
one complaint...not long enough. I just want it to keep going and going...

also check out the other skeleton stuff!

5 out of 5 stars ease into this one - it is well worth the effort........2005-08-22

skeletons & the girl-faced boys used to just be called skeletons, and under that name the main guy released a few records before this one on a label called shinkoyo..git is the first record he's done for mostly-electronic label ghostly, and shows a huge step forward in complexity while still being really listenable and even catchy.

ive read some reviews that seem to be really confused about where this record is coming from (comparisons to animal collective AND boyz 2 men?), but really it just takes a few listens to sink in, since every second is packed with tons of detail. git will definitely be appreciated by fans of can, max tundra, talking heads, and the soul jazz label, among others..check it out.

      5 out of 5 stars Nothingface's Skeletons.......2007-05-11

Nothingface is one of the few bands out there that have made a better record each time they have released a new CD. "Skeletons" is easily the bands strongest CD to date. Though their last CD "Violence" was a great album, "Skeletons" is a definite improvement. "Skeletons" shows more of a variety of skills from every member of the band. Nothingace seems to just get better with every release, which not many other bands can say these days.

5 out of 5 stars Nothingface takes on the world........2007-04-13

For some reason, I didn't realize the brilliance of this album on first listen. It took a couple of times to get the full impact, and when I got it, it took hold of me and has risen to be another perfect piece of music in my mind. This set off endorphins in my brain that had never been touched by any other music. This release may be the most musically accessible album they have made (at least in part)but it also covers some of the heaviest topics of the time. Namely, displeasure with how the government is handling things in our country and overseas, as well as the catholic church (priests mollesting boys). It is loud, angry, but sometimes beautiful. And that is why it is so incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Emotional.......2007-04-09

If there is a band that certainly stands out amongst the other bands it is lumped up to, it is Nothingface. Sadly, they have been branded "nu-metal" due to their image and lyrical theme. I don't find that true at all. Nothingface is a band that, unlike a lot of nu-metal, cares about their music. They keep continuing to do this with their 4th album (and what was thought to be their last until they reunited after a quick disbanding), "Skeletons".

This is one of the most diverse groove metal albums I have ever heard. "Ether" is one of their slower type of songs (and possibly their most known single), while you have a rampage with "Here Comes The Butchers". It's well varied and is actually worth listening throughout. Matt Holt is an excellent and unique vocalist who can mix screaming and singing without sounding too prebuscent. The guitar riffs are ear catching and don't sound rehashed. It's just the excellent CD to break away from your current music scene.

If you are a fan of Pantera, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage and Fear Factory, I advise you check this band out.

      5 out of 5 stars Genious. .......2006-07-23

Nothingface are brilliant. I remember the first time I heard the song 'Ether.' That song drove me to buy this album. Ether is definetly the best song on this album, the lyrics explain it all. They are brilliant.

      'we came to take control
we came to sell you freedom
we came to burn you down
      we came to brainwash children
      and its not our fault
its just your own new suicide
      Where we belong
      theres no one to hurt.
its someplace where we cant be felt
      where we belong
      its darker than space
a feeling that we all push down
      so we cant be found'

2 out of 5 stars Changed for the worse..........2005-11-07

I am just curious where the Nothingface I used to enjoy went. This album is so much different than their other stuff...and not good at that. This cd is boring. Violence was such a great album, it was heavy as all get out, the lyrics were ridiculously awesome and matched the title of the album. But what is this boring nonsense they released? I also want to ask...what is up with the stupid outfits and idiotic hair-does? Go back to looking nomral! Seriously, why did Nothingface feel the need to go from an excellent straightforward metal act to this want-to-be nu-metal garbage? Maybe if they would spend less time on looking like idiots and focus more on their music like they used to then this would have turned out better. I got into this band because they were NOT nu-metal. I was surprised that there was heavy music out there that had good lyrics, no stupid image gimmicks, that wasnt stupid nu-metal and not hardcore. They were something original...but it seems TVT thought they should change their awesome band into another Disturbed or *enter bulls*$#&$ nu-metal band here* I will admit, "Here come the butchers" is the only great track on here, it sounds just like old Nothingface and naturally I thought this whole album was going to be like it...thus the reason I bought this crap. But please, for the love of god, do yourself a favor and pick up Violence or one of their other albums. I beg of you.

First let me say that I have just recently discovered Gamma Ray. I am a big fan of power metal from the 80s and have been dismayed at the quality of music being offered these days. However, I stumbled across Helloween and then Gamma Ray and they blew my mind away!

Kai Hanson is a musical genius in my opinion because he writes songs that have good melodies. You tend to remember his songs after a couple of times listening to it. You couple this with excellent and powerful guitar work and your have the makings of a truly great band.

I must say that this live album collection of "B" songs is a great introduction to this band as a previous reviewer stated. Kai Hanson's vocals have gotten better over time and I think his vocal style works better for the type of songs he writes.

Bottom line: I'm happy as a clam. I have some power metal I can listen to. It's a shame that there aren't any really good power metal bands in the U.S. (at least that are known), but maybe that is because it is more popular in Europe now than here in the U.S. Whatever the case, all power metal fans should have this album in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!!!!!!.......2005-01-11

I saw Gamma Ray in Mexico City in 2003 and there was a great show, Kai Hansen's voice it's great and all the band sounds good. This double live album it's excellent, but many songs are missing, for example "Abyss of the void", "Fire below","Send me a sign", "Somewhere out in space", to name a few. Dan's drums in the album sounds fantastic, his solo it's so intense and all the songs are great. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best power metal groups out there.......2004-05-22

      What's good about it?

Whether it's the nine-minute epic "Armageddon" with its lightning quick dual guitar attack, the Queen-like power ballad "The Silence," or the power metal blues riffing on "New World Order," one thing is clear about Gamma Ray, they always present consistent and enjoyable heavy metal music. Sure they have some strange topic to sing about, mostly sci-fi stuff, but that's the genre. Only in power metal could you get away with the title "Heart of the Unicorn." Frontman Kai Hansen's vocals are so gritty and the music is so frantic, you can forgive him for the subject matter. Gamma Ray packs all their songs with plenty of chugga-chugga riffing on the low E string, melodic vocals, powerful choruses, movie epic harmonies, rapid guitar solos, and double kick drums. You'd think that this formula would get kind of old after a while, but each song is unique and never boring. "Rich and Famous" was a b-side from one of their earlier albums. The high-pitched opening riff is sure to stick with you. Gamma Ray rallies the crowd with "Heavy Metal Universe." You can hear the crowd feed off the group's energy as they sing along. Be sure to listen to the fluid solo work "Razor Blade Sigh" and "Rising Star/Shine On." Also included in the double-CD set are video clips for two of the songs performed live.

      Anything bad?

This album was released a year and a half ago overseas. Please save the drum solos for the show, keep them off the CD. I'm sure the fans didn't vote for it.

      Bottom Line

When you let your fans pick the set list, you know it's going to be made up of songs not normally played live or heard on the radio. This is always a treat for the fans. If you're not a fan, don't let this discourage you. Skeletons In the Closet is a great collection of songs by one of the best power metal groups out there. What else can you say about a group who's rare and B material is just as great as their A material?

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars: Great Collection of Their Early Tracks.......2007-04-24

Prior to the Skeletons, guitarist D. Clinton Thompson (who also served in the Ozark Mountain Daredevils) and bassist Lou Whitney (producer of the first Del-Lords album) played together in a variety of lineups, including the pride of Springfield, MO -- The Morells. The former's superb "Driving Guitars" 45 rescued a swell Ventures tune from obscurity, and the pair has continued to mine the vaults of rock, R&B, and country arcana for some minor classics (unearthing tunes, as Robert Christgau put it, "Dave Edmunds would give his doctorate for") and the inspiration to pen their own instant winners.

The 'Rockin' Bones' LP (1987) compiled the entire contents of the band's original three pre-Morells singles (from '79-'80, after which three of the Skeletons became Steve Forbert's band) and added three tunes cut after the Skeletons were revived in the mid-'80s. The album, which is simply delightful from start to finish, takes an automotive angle, with Whitney's flawless "Trans Am" and covers like "Gas Money" and the instrumental "B/Gas Accord." If Johnny Otis' "Crazy Country Hop" and Whitney's Presleyesque "Tell Her I'm Gone" break the topical mold, they do nothing to interrupt the magical mood.

Adding a second keyboard player, the Skeletons made an all-new (recording-wise, that is) album, reducing the overt nostalgia in favor of a more integrated old-fashioned sound that brings a wider collection of influences into the studio. Besides a wonderfully updated cover of Sonny Bono's "Laugh at Me" (This time the protagonist is bald!) and the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Older Guys," 'In the Flesh!' (1988) contains the Del-Lords' purposeful "I Play the Drums," the somewhat sappy "For Every Heart," and a brief "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," with the lyrics altered by one note. The playing's great and the spirit never falters, but this accomplished collection doesn't have quite enough of what makes 'Rockin' Bones' so downright upright. In 1991, East Side Digital released a CD, also titled 'In the Flesh!,' that comprised both Skeletons LPs and included a short essay and history of the band by Daniel Durchholz. - Jim Green/Ira Robbins, AMG

The Skeletons never gained widespread recognition, yet they had a small cult of dedicated followers who made them a popular roots-rock bands in the late '80s and '90s. Based in Springfield, Missouri, the Skeletons formed in 1979 as a touring band assembled by Steve Forbert. Following the tour, they decided to stay together, releasing their own records when they weren't touring either as their own entity or as a supporting group. In 1987 they released their first American album, Rockin' Bones. Over the next 10 years, they remained busy, particularly backing artists like Syd Straw and Dave Alvin, yet only released three other albums - In the Flesh! (1988), Waiting (1992) and Nothin' to Lose (1997). - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

The Skeletons out of Springfield, Mo. should have been mega but essentally people are simply too stupid to appreciate that.
No matter what kind of music you think you like, These Skelefellas can twist it all up like almost nobody. So get with the program!

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD LITTLE ROOTS ROCKIN' BAND.......2001-06-15

In 1979 Steve Forbert started gathering musicians to form a new backing band to go on tour with him that year. After the Forbert tour, these guys decided they wanted to stay together, so they started this band the Skeletons. All I can say is thank you Steve Forbert! The Skeletons have quietly rolled along touring and recording great little indie records over the years since 1979. They are a well respected and sought after band who have backed artists such as Dave Alvin, Syd Straw on her classic album "War and Peace", and bluesman Clarence Brewer on his album "King Clarence", which is a gem of an album. In 1997 the Skeletons recorded "Nothing To Lose", which sounds like a very appropriate title for this little known bands newest record. With the bigger record label Hightone releasing this, at least their getting a little more of the recognition they deserve. I've enjoyed listening to this cd over these past few years. It's pure fun. This is a very tight and versatile band. They deliver a generous helping of rock and roll with songs like "DOWNHEARTED", which reminds me of something that could have come right out of the late 70's pop scene. "TEARDROP CITY" is a tune that sounds very much like some of the more tasteful american pop rock of the mid-60's. They do a couple very nice mid-tempo rockers with "MAD OLD LADY" and the very catchy IT'S OK TO BE LONELY". They do a little country rock with "COUNTRY BOYS DON'T CRY". They do a great ballad and my favorite here with "PAY TO PLAY". And they even do a mean little surf instrumental with "TUBB'S THEME". With "Nothing to Lose" you get a little of everything, and that's what makes this such a fun listen. If you like this album, you might like some of the Skeleton's side projects. Their guitar player D. Clinton Thompson did a project a few years ago with a band he started called the Park Central Squares, which is another good album if you can find it. Another side project is a band called the Morells, which is basically the whole Skeleton crew doing a rockabilly album under another name. Like I said, these guys are versatile. If you want their best album though, look mo further. Nothing to Lose is their best so far.

        3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Listening.......2001-01-21

I tracked this album down and bought it because the Skeletons backed Syd Straw on War and Peace, playing with an energy there which added much to her songs. I don't find that energy here. The songs roll past, well-played, well-written and pleasant enough, but nothing grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go, especially after four or five listenings over a couple of week. It's a democratic band for sure. Three write or co-write, and all four take turns singing lead. Keyboardist Joe Terry has two of the three best songs, Mad Old Lady and Whiffle Ball; the other is Pay to Play. If they really needed to record Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, why not I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight instead of the eminently forgettable Teardrop City? Heard in a bar, with a couple micro brews under your belt, these guys would probably sound like the best band in the world. (And I gather that's why SS got them for War and Peace.) It just doesn't translate to CD.

I was overjoyed when I saw that the Skeletons were back together again and had released this new album. In my humble opinion, this is the best Skeletons album to date and I, for one, am begging for more! This album grabs you and doesn't let go. Its got basically no slow spots at all and I find myself listening to the entire album straight through regularly. I strongly recommend it to any Skeletons fan or anyone who is interested in being introduced to Missouri's finest roadhouse musicians.
