A perfect service at the church of Hawkwind.......2007-02-07
I have recently gotten back into Hawkwind after a few years departed on ambient music. As many of you know, Hawkwind has had a long an infinately diverse career. Camps seem to differ on what particular stage Brock and his starship crew are favored the best. I for one am fond of the later albums. I find the albums less heavy and more elemental so to speak.
Out of albums such as Xenon Codex, Space Bandits,Electric Teepee, Chronicle of the Black Sword,It is the Buisiness of the Future to be Dangerous...etc...I 'd have to say this one's my favorite. Some of the eighties albums like Chronicle, and Choose Your Masques began to get uninspired even though they did fairly well at the time. It seems to me to be a truly unique ride in the Brock machine for the time period.
If I'm right on my Hawkwind history, this album fell after the departure of Calvert, and Dave Brock took the helm. Through the opening of Angel Voices, to the etheral shuffle of Star Cannibal, and on to The Last Messiah...this is really a good Hawkwind album. I can appreciate what captain Dave did at the helm.
If your out on a sunday and need some spritual sonic fuel for the soul...then spend the money for this out of print gem..and enjoy the ride.
Though not the best produced..and certainly the dullest of the Hawkwind beautiful artwork catalouge. Just grey with offwhite lettering(Dave must have been low on funds). This album is a sleeper hit so to speak. It just proves you don't have to spend alot of money to make a terrific record.
So, five stars to this one. I'm calling it my favorite Hawkwind album.
I hope you agree as well.
Contractual Obligation.......2004-05-09
Brock had this album issued as a Hawkwind release in order to fulfil the RCA contract. However, this is a Dave Brock solo album, with Harvey assisting on keys, and Huw being brought in late in the mixing to rescue some of the tracks. There are some rough gems in here, however this is not a Hawkwind or Brock masterpiece. The compositions are variable, their potential is unrealised, the recording is decent, the mix is average and the production is poor. The three later pieces are out of place, though that incarnation of Hawkwind is better representitive of Brock's solo compositions. For Bainbridge/Langton era Hawkwind, Levitation is the high point.
Hawkwind - 'Church Of Hawkwind' (Griffin Music).......2003-12-21
Very decent fifteen track disc.Twelve of these tunes were originally released in 1982 and were slated to be a Dave Brock solo release.Guess he changed his mind. There are three brand new tracks on here,"Indentimate","Damage Of Life"(the band sometimes still play this number on tour),and the somewhat mesmerizing "Mists Of Meridin".Even though Brock is the only original member on 'Church Of...',it's still very much in the Hawkwind vein.Trippin' compositions would be the nicely flowing "Nuclear Drive","Fall Of Earth City"(cool song title,eh?),and "Experience With Destiny".The complex and the well-timed synth sounds are STILL very much intact.A very good progressive/space later day release.
Hawkwinded.......2003-07-25
Somewhat of a tired album from the Hawks. There are a few classics ("Nuclear Drive," "Star Cannibal," and "Light Specific Data" come to mind instantly), some space garbage ("Virgin of the World" and "The Joker at the Gate" are pretty laughable), and a lot of mediocre songs that go nowhere. Three stars might be a bit kind (two and a half would be more appropriate), but I am after all a hawkfan, so I don't mind cutting Brock and crew some slack on this one.
Perhaps their best.......2002-06-11
I have been a Hawkwind fan for years and I would rate this CD as their finest ever. They cover all their bases from hard rock (Nuclear Drive/ Light Specific Data) to spacy material (Mists of Meridin / The Church) to funky sounding cuts (Identimate/ Star Cannibal) to just plain strange (Joker at the gate/ Experiment with Destiny). This CD is well rounded, never bores and improves with every listen. If you like Electric Tepee then this CD is for you. GET IT!
