There is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultratalented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller, and the prince of rai Cheb Mami, fill the roster. Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up" (no, not "Fill 'Er Up"), a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest / Got no prospect / Or education / I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus! / You gotta fill her up with life!" Who knew unleaded could be so rousing? --Beth Massa

My Favorite.......2007-01-25
Being the Sting fan that I am. This has become my favorite Sting CD. Aa a matter of fact this is my second copy, I wore out the first one!
There is something on this CD for everyone, every mood and a great long drive CD.
Soothing music.......2007-01-16
How can you not like Sting? I happen to really like this CD. His selections of songs on this CD are great and wonderful to listen to.
Better than what I was anticipating........2006-08-30
However, rather bland sounding at best. I found "A Thousand Years" a rather good piece, "Desert Rose" was decent, but not all that great, the rest was all forgettable, and showed that this was just an excuse to put out an album to fufill a record contract. The album comes to a horrible end with the title track which paralyzed me in depression. I'm not sure wheter the single version, or the album version is worse, but to me I know that anyway you slice it it's just enough to make me cry. I know that pretty much Sting made the comment in 1988 that he didn't give a F**K about rock and roll, but in 1991 he comes back with a more pop sounding album, and it continues in 1993, and in 1996 he comes out with "Mercury Uprising", and it has a rock sound to it, but here he decides he's caught in a lie, and now decides to cover it up with numerous musical influences, and it doesn't wash.
Is Sting worse than Billy Joel ?.......2006-08-22
10 years ago I would have said " no it is impossible for anyone who has not actually committed a serious crime to be worse than Billy Joel". Today I know better. Sting has almost single handedly destroyed the ears and the soul of an entire generation of yuppies.
On the other hand Clapton probably stinks louder than even Sting.
Sting - BRAND NEW DAY (1999).......2006-07-12
Sting seemed to be on a roll in the early 90s, with his masterpiece THE SOUL CAGES and the outstanding TEN SUMMONER'S TALES. Unfortunately, his winning streak ended with 1996's MERCURY FALLING, a pretentious, unextraodinary addition to Sting's musical portfolio. In 1999, however, Sting made his comeback in a big way with BRAND NEW DAY. It was the ex-Police frontman's first venture into techno music, which he would continue to explore on his subsequent release, SACRED LOVE. Along with the exotic "Desert Rose", a surprise smash hit for the 50-something musician, there's a variety of delightful songs, including the hyptonic "A Thousand Years", the irresistible "After The Rain Has Fallen", and the mega-upbeat title tune. The album has a few oddities - "Tomorrow We'll See", about a transvestite hooker, redeemed by its shady bass line, and the cringeworthy, pretentious "Fill Her Up", undoubtedly the worst song of Sting's entire career - but for the most part, it's a delightful melding of jazz, alt rock and techno. Over thirty years after a band called The Police burst on to the music scene, Sting still rocks.

Not my favorite Sting Album..........2005-01-21
That would be Ten Summoner Tales, but this one ranks up there. This is another album that Sting seems to want to have fun on while some of the songs are a little more serious than Ten Summoner Tales. The mix of music is pretty good, ranging from Middle Eastern to Country. The lyrics are excellent (as always). My favorite song is "Brand New Day" because it gives a nice positive message.
The SACD mix on this album is amazing. Sting never sounded better. Makes the album come alive and seem like STing is right in the living room. The 5.1 mix is very well done. Just wish they would do the same for Ten Summoners Tales.

Product Description
Like great new music? Well, here it is! Ken Oak is a talented new pop-rock artist who blends elements of rock, pop, folk, and classical into his own unique sound and style. Half Step Down is his first full-length album! It contains 14 original compositions and 6 singles (Maybe, Wonder, End Credits, These Things, Half Step Down, and Analog Girl). Ken is classically trained at the guitar and the cello. He layers his mellow baritone voice, catchy guitar riffs, and soulful cello lines into subtle and complex chords and harmonies. His expertly crafted lyrics feature a dry wit, intelligence, and sense of poetry that he uses to paint personal stories about relationships and experiences that are meaningful and accessible. Although there are bound to be comparisons to artists such as John Mayer, Matchbox 20, and Jack Johnson, Ken's music also contains appreciative nods to other influences such as The Smiths, Oasis, and Sarah McLachlan. Maybe maintained the #1 position (out of 6,517 songs) at soundclick.com and End Credits maintained the #3 position (out of 5,883 songs). Wonder has also been featured on MTV's Surf Girls, NBC Sports' The Road to Ironman, and the WBs High School Reunion. Half Step Down was mastered at Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA. The producers and engineers that worked on Half Step Down have worked with artists such as Sting, R.E.M., Lifehouse, Lisa Loeb, Audioslave, and Smashing Pumpkins. You can learn more about Ken and stay current with the latest news and info by going to www.kenoak.net. Sign in through the Leak Page to gain access to exclusive content! Also, be sure to check out Ken's online journal at www.kenoak.net or at www.xanga.com/kenoak! With 14 songs and 6 singles, Half Step Down represents great value for great new music.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite CD..........2005-04-25
What an amazing album. Ken's first full-length album is simply awesome. His lyrics are fresh and funky, with great work from his whole band. His voice is mellow and unique, and I find myself enjoying every single song. It's been a long time since I've heard something this cool. I highly recommend this album, so much, in fact, that I'm buying copies for all my friends. I haven't stopped listening to it yet. This is an awesome CD!
Good stuff.......2005-04-12
"Is the cello absolutely vital for the show?"
"Uh... yeah, it actually kinda is."
I had no idea why it was so bloody important to him, but I had my staff shell out the extra $25 for the cello rental. When Ken hit the stage at KASCON XIX performing "Soma," I was floored.
Ken's music has its share of nice rhythms, smooth vocals, and well-written lyrics suitable for any fan of acoustic jingles.
He's a splendid chap, too. Along with Ed Gorski and Chris Ramos, he'll pose in any "plutonic picture" you request to be taken with him.
Awww ... Ken's not like that ..........2005-04-05
I just wanted to say that I love this album! I listen to it over and over again. In fact, it's the only CD I play in my car. The range of the music and the depth of Ken's lyrics make every track a winner.
And with respect to Not a Poet's review ... well, Ken's not like that ... I happen to know him and I know that he wrote that song in response to some people who were slandering him online. So the song's not directed at everybody, it's just directed at those folks who were spreading lies about him.
Fresh, eclectic, and great from start to finish.......2005-04-01
This album rocks! The music is fresh, the lyrics are real, and the mix of styles and sounds is amazing. Every song is accessible and easy to relate to. Ken's songs avoid cliches while staying musical. "End Credits" and "Half Step Down" have a great groove, and the cello and instrumental work on "Soma" is transcendent. This is a fantastically well balanced album from a genuinely gifted new artist. PICK THIS UP!!
Nouveau Tunes.......2005-04-01
I've listened to many artists' music and not one artist caught my attention as much as Ken Oak did. His music is classic and it definitely shatters the current monotonous mainstream music windows. I'm Asian so I can say this: It's a relief to hear tunes from an Asian artist that isn't ear wrenching, eye wincing music. Oak is actually completely the opposite. His soothing, soft, and might I add, sexy voice is something you can relax to in your car, at your home, or even at a party.

Customer Reviews:
Namnambulu is one of a kind..........2005-11-08
The 'Expansion' album by Namnambulu is one album that I cannot say enough about. The exotic sound cuts into me with a sense of emotionalism and energy. The lyrics are facinating dealing with feelings and thoughts. Pop tarts looking to shake their Jenny Craig challenged rumps to moronic crude words and over repititious beats may not want this in their collection. Namnambulu is unique, a Swiss duo who sing in English, and yet they almost have an Eastern sound to them. Check this album out, it's as good as 'Distances', if not better.
Catchy Tunes but Grows Tiresome Rather Quickly.......2005-09-16
Nearly any futurepop aficionado will recognize NamNamBulu as the Swiss band discovered by VNV Nation's Ronan Harris on one of his jaunts through the Continent. Merely being linked with such legends generated great positive hype for NNB. Well for the most part that hype is unwarranted.
While the duo have little trouble writing melodic tracks that pump, they have serious issues with making it work for more than 10 minutes at a time. As the more negative reviewer accurately suggests, this grows monotonous very rapidly. The vocals are standard Euro-synth with that smooth, deep tone that ends up sounding stilted and snobby as opposed to passionate; it works sometimes but grates on you before long. The music is a bit to straight-out-of-the-can as well lacking creative spark. I'll admit that "Faces" and "Game" are very strong singles with harmonious lyrical flow and make me want to hit the dancefloor, however it's difficult to leave the disc on much longer. The collaboration with the excellent electro industrial group [:SITD:] is interesting on its own, but its harshness is an extremely odd placement alongside the other songs - really a fish out of water.
Generally speaking NNB are an overrated band whose sound doesn't stick with you well enough to work as powerful pop and isn't daring enough to work as art. I pop it in for 2-3 tracks from time to time for dancefloor, singalong fun and it works on that level. Still ultimately this is an artistic failure.
Monotonous.......2005-08-09
Both the singer and the keyboardist lack imagination. One song blends into the next and into the next. Slight variations in pace, and pitch do little to add interest past the second track. It's the same disease that afflicted Evil's Toy.
Another victory for this swiss duo.......2005-02-24
After first hearing about namnambulu and listening to "Distances" I was hooked on their sound.I have not heard a song I have not liked yet.EXPANSION is another one of those. It is only a ep so being only 6 tracks and a few remixes making it 11 total.Faces is a good song strong in melody and vocals.Game is another great song as is forgiving which is a duet with sitd. The remixes are very dancey and club worthy.Namnambulu is futurepop at its best,If you love vnv nation, assemblage 23 or apoptygma berserk this ep should be part of your collection.
