Revisionism can be as rewarding as rediscovery; indeed, they often make a compelling duo. Those sentiments drive veteran producer Hal Willner's tribute to pioneering musicologist Harry Smith's documentation and preservation of American folk forms--music that was already an endangered species by the time he originally compiled them for Folkways Records in the early '50s. As he's done on similar tributes to musicians as varied as jazz giants Monk and Mingus, Italian film scoring legend Nina Rota, and songwriters Kurt Weill and Leonard Cohen, Willner puts together a group of musicians as intriguingly eclectic as the vintage songs they're covering. That Smith's own original efforts helped fuel the '60s folk boom that in turn inspired more than a few of the musicians here helps give the collection the warm sensibility of musical traditions coming full circle.

Spread across two CDs and a pair of DVD's are a rich slate of performances captured in Los Angeles, New York, and London in 1999 and 2001, as well as documentary material about Smith's own pioneering efforts that helped inspire them. Beck and Lou Reed spin spare, harrowing takes on blues godfathers Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, respectively, while Elvis Costello, Wilco, Richard Thompson, Steve Earle, Van Dyke Parks, the McGarrigles, and others offer up covers characterized by varying degrees of reverence. But, as is typical of most Willner projects, it's the more unlikely musical pairings here that yield the greatest intrigues, be they Pere Ubu's David Thomas recasting "Fishin' Blues" in his forceful persona or Bill Frisell's distinctive jazz sensibilities--the latter also suffusing Gavin Friday's "Fatal Flower Garden" with ghostly elegance. A welcome sense of playfulness also surfaces throughout, one whose good humor even makes room for a relevant clip from Chris Guest's A Mighty Wind folk mockumentary, as well as amusing recollections by some of the artists influenced by Smith's original musical archaeology. More than merely revering history, this is a collection that cheerfully revels in its reinvention. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting souvenir of a once in a lifetime experience..........2007-04-22

I attended the concert on the first night in LA, from which a majority of the material here was drawn (I actually stuck it out 'til the 2:00 am conclusion!) What drew me to the show is much the same as the appeal of this set - the chance to see 30 or more of your favorite singers and musicians on the same stage (and a few who you could do without), playing songs from what just might be the greatest and most influential compilation (or "mix tape") of all time! At the very least, this is a very nice souvenir of the event. The interviews and backstage/rehearsal footage in the DVD are very illuminating and are ample testimony to the mad genius of Hal Willner (creator/producer).
Some of the performances here are a lot less impressive that my memory of them, while others (David Johansen, Richard Thompson and Elvis Costello, among others) hold up very well. Willner should be commended for showcasing criminally underrated artists like Robin Holcomb and Van Dyke Parks, as well as for pushing some people (like Beck and Beth Orton) out of their comfort zone material-wise, resulting in some very memorable performances. Some of my other favorites here: Sonic Youth (with trombonist Roswell Rudd) burn up the stage on "Dry Bones", David Thomas is an insane genius, Bob Neuwirth, Geoff Muldaur and Steve Earle all individually show they are up to the task.
There were some classic moments from the night I attended that didn't make it to this release, including Garth Hudson's bizarre and amazing "Recessional Music" on the Royce Hall pipe organ, and Daniel Lanois' mini-set of the Anthology's Cajun songs (accompanied by his super-loud electric guitar). The pre-Mighty Wind Folksmen, introducing some much needed perspective, are rightfully represented here. However, not included was their version of "Flashdance," which somehow said it all (the audience were larfing). Also, not to be forgotten was Mary Margaret O'Hara's train wreck version of "Better Things" (which is represented here by a less chaotic version from a different night). It caused a mass exodus - as it was about midnight at that point, a lot of people were probably suddenly remembering they had babysitters or jobs to go to in the morning!
Being a lot more familiar with the original Anthology recordings now than I was prior to the concert, I am probably a lot more critical of these interpretations, some of which are frankly a bit superficial. Also, it is a bit more noticeable, especially on the DVD, which performers hadn't done their homework and learned the songs thoroughly before the show! On the other hand, some of the versions here caused me to have new appreciation for the songs themselves and really focus on the brilliance and bizarreness of the lyrics. A lot of contemporary songwriters could stand to check them out..
On the technical end, the camera work on the DVD is a bit "on the fly" but not too bad considering there was probably very little rehearsal/blocking. Audio-wise, the recording quality is much better than expected (I'm guessing there was a litlle bit of post-production repair, including fixing some fluffed lyrics). The second DVD ("Old Weird America") that delves a bit more into Harry Smith and the origins of the Anthology, has been shown a bit in art house theaters around the country and is almost worth the price of the set by itself.

3 out of 5 stars Some good some not so good.......2007-02-08

Overall worthwhile, although I won't be listening to it often.

5 out of 5 stars David Johansen, take a bow.......2007-02-07

There are many good things in this package, but none better than David Johansen's two mighty contributions, 'Old Dog Blue' and 'James Alley Blues'. He's come a long, long way since the New York Dolls and Buster Poindexter, and it seems to me that he's finally where he should be.

Petra Haden's 'Single Girl' is pretty good as well. But Johansen's performances (both captured on the dvd) are nonpareil. Can't help but feel that of all the artists here, he and Haden are the ones Harry Smith would have recognised at once as belonging to the American tradition he curated.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic--the "folk process" documented!.......2007-01-22

If you are curious about this but are not familiar with the original "Anthology of American Folk Music"--GET IT, and listen. It is like looking back in time, sort of like the Hubble telescope, only we are looking at images from our own human heritage, and perhaps ourselves.

As Hal Willner says, there are pieces you will love and pieces you might not like. But in truth, this is how the artists in this collection interpreted the originals. And even in the ones I was less than enthusiastic about, I saw something, and went back with a greater appreciation of the original. As a result I developed more enthusiasm for the new performance. This is something to be savored over and over.

I had been listening to Folkways LPs and subscribing to Singout! since the early '60s, and aquired the anthology in the early '70s. I had no previous knowledge of many performers in this set. So this was an eye-opener for me. I even read a review of a person, although generally positive, who wondered why "The Folksman" were in this. My answer is, "we perhaps should not take anything too seriously, and what if the gift of life itself is just a joke?"

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection: but a lot less than perfect........2007-01-03

No collection will please everyone. That being said, this one left me a little cold in that the coices about what to include and what to leave out were not the choices I would have made were I producing this collection.
Without going into details and whys - suffice it to say that before buying this set, you need to take a close look at the playlist so that you will not wind up buying something that is appreciably different than what you were hoping it would be.

In his '60s heyday, there was never any doubt that Johnny Rivers (nee Ramistella) was an energetic performer with a good ear for hit material. In retrospect, though, Rivers's numerous AM radio hits boasted an emotional honesty that belied his commercial image. That point is made repeatedly on this 2 CD, 36-song set, which contains all of his hits and demonstrates the singer-guitarist's ease with a variety of styles, from spare '50s-style rock & roll("Memphis," "Mountain of Love"), bluesy party rock ("Secret Agent Man," "The Seventh Son"), bittersweet balladry ("Poor Side of Town," "The Tracks of My Tears"), gentle folk-rock ("Summer Rain," "Into the Mystic"), and smooth middle-of-the-road pop ("Swayin' to the Music"). --Scott Schinder

I have two copies of this CD set. I love it. I've listened to it over and over. I highly recommend this Cd set to all. You will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Rivers' Anthology.......2003-01-25

This is by far the most awesome and complete compilation of Johnny Rivers' songs. I realize he didn't write most of them himself, and he is commonly known as a "cover artist", but, after listening to this CD, you won't even remember that anyone else sang them before him!! His voice is so unique and memorable, espcially in "Swaying' to the Music (Slow Dancing)" and "Do You Want to Dance?" A special treat is "Where Have All the Flowers Gone", (for all of us 60's peace-niks) and "Cupid", which was a big surprise to hear from the usually serious Johnny Rivers. Bottom line -- Johnny Rivers can sing any song, any time, as evidenced by the wide range of music on this CD. By the way, I just ordered my second Anthology cassettes; I wore out the first ones!!

5 out of 5 stars An American Original.......2003-01-14

One of the first LPs I ever bought with my own money was a United Artists album entitled The Very Best Of Johnny Rivers, which I must have picked up around 1974 or so--and I have been a Rivers fan ever since. As other reviewers have noted, Johnny Rivers, though essentially a "cover artist," was much more than that--like many great interpreters (Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris come to mind), he had an ability to take most any song and make it his own, regardless of genre. Starting out as a Chuck Berry rock-and-roller with his "a-go-go" sound ("Memphis," "Maybelline") he made forays into folk-rock ("Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"), Motown ("The Tracks Of My Tears," "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'"), blues ("Parchman Farm," "Seventh Son"), R&B ("Sea Cruise," "Rockin' Pneumonia"), country (Buck Owens' "Under Your Spell Again"), pop ("By The Time I get To Phoenix") and even progressive rock ("Whiter Shade Of Pale," "Into The Mystic"). Whatever he did, though, it was undeniably American music, as befits a man who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

While the hits are all here--and they're all great--some of the real gems in this collection are the ones you may never have heard: "It's Too Late," "These Are Not My People," "City Ways" and "Muddy River" are particular favorites of mine. Overall, an underappreciated artist and an American original. Essential listening.

5 out of 5 stars guilty pleasure again..........2002-01-03

If you're a baby boomer born in the 50s and came of album (not singles)buying age, as I did, in the late sixties ,you probably dismissed Johnny Rivers as being hopelessly lame and un-hip. Yeah,me too.But as with Lulu, and Jackie DeShannon, and the Box Tops, and The Rascals, well hindsight is a funny thing. I secrectly loved every single Johnny Rivers (born John Ramistella in New Orleans, and that speaks volumes)ever released. I'm sure the LPs of the time were full of the usual filler and I wasn't gonna take a chance with my allowance on 'em anyway. But now I'm real happy to own and play this comprehensive 2 disc set of wonderful blue-eyed soul and fun pop.The guy can play some guitar and his distinctive vocal style makes all the Chuck Berry and Motown covers different and fun. "Poor Side Of Town" still gets to me, and my nine and ten year old sons are shimmying and hully-gullying around the house to the sounds of "Secret Agent Man" as I type. They are not easy to please either, if it don't prance, the boys don't dance.A great buy and a whole lotta fun. The problem is, now I havta go back and re-evaluate just how much I liked those ol' Grass Roots and Soul Survivors singles. Not as much as I like these tunes I'll betcha.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A NICE TRIP, BACK TO 1972................................2005-09-04

Threw out my old vinyl on this baby, got out of the 1970s, and with the 21st century, and picked up this cd. I love it, the hoakiness, the fun, the dialouge and that post psychedelic sound. "Deepthroat" since its release in 1972, has grossed over $600,000,000 and cost $25,000 to make in one week of filming in Florida. Linda Lovelace with her assumed talents and "Deepthroat" revolutionized the porn industry. Fine linear notes by Porn Porker "Ron Jeremy" are a facinating look into this landmark movie. Everybody was seeing Deepthroat" instead of just talking about it, now doing it, well that is another story better left unsaid. This music brings you back to the fun 1970s. "Deepthroat II" is a better soundtrack than 1, but I still like the original the best. The lackluster organ rips, the raunchy dialouge, all this brings you back to a turmoil filled time with the unfortunate Vietnam War going on, but some what a simpler time.........R.I.P. LINDA LOVELACE,DEEPTHROAT TO YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Deep Throat To You All!.......2005-01-31

Now I have owned Trunk's copy of this record for the last 5 years. Previously I heard the original copy on a friends record player. The sound quality always sucked hard until this release by Light In The Attic. From reviewing the CD it appears old film equipment was used to convert from mono to stereo. And the tracks actually sound good! On top of that LITA has added Deep Throat 2 to the CD! Probably better music then Throat 1...and barely ever heard. There are some sick notes by the hedge hog and a prof William Wackenstein. Ron speaks of deep throating tricks while Prof William talks about throat parties, ludes and trying to bang Trannies! What a group the LITA label hangs with! These guys obviously have deep issues! Make sure and peel off the sticker on the cover...as santa brings a hard one for you peepers! Grab your girl, a cheap bottle of wine and start the deep throatin' - and smash Trunk's old copy - YOU DON'T NEED IT ANYMORE!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Collection from Australias Greatest Singer.......2001-03-01

This is the second volume in the Anthology set celebrating John's 30th Anniversary as a Charting singer. This volume covers his hits through his "Johnny Farnham" pop period to his mainstream rock period with "Uncovered" and the Little River Band. The standout tracks are the ballads that truely show the full intensity of Farnham's fine voice. Comic Conversations and Please Don't Ask Me are the best examples. Looking Through a Tear is a great song, however, the vocals seem a bit off. The LRB tracks - No Way to Love Someone, Playing to win, When the War is Over and Justice for One are also great track. The final track (And I Love Her) is a Studio re-working of an old Beatles song. Overall, this album showcases the best live recordings of the various songs. The songs are drawn from many different concerts. A number of the tracks are from a video from 1987, some are from concerts with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1989, the LRB era ones are from a previously unrelease concert in 1986, and there are a number from recent tours and a concert at the openning of the Palladium Ballroom in Melbourne, 1997. Farnham is reluctant too perform his firsat hit Sadie the Cleaning Lady hence the rather short version that appears on this album. Highly recommended compilation of the best post 1986 live recordings of Farnham's Pre-86 material

    Product Description

This gorgeous, specially-priced collection reveals why White Swan Records is widely considered the leading purveyor of “yogabeat.” Bestselling mantra enchantress Deva Premal, the “guru of East-West fusion” Prem Joshua, emerging talents such as Manish Vyas and Suvarna: all represent White Swan’s knack for selecting the finest music for the creative, spiritual listener. The underlying beauty of yoga’s incredible popularity is that millions of Americans are realizing the connection between their bodies, the earth and each other. Heard in yoga studios nationwide, White Swan’s music facilitates the deepening of that bond. With remixes by dj Cheb i Sabbah, an unreleased Deva Premal track, new classics from Prem Joshua and other favorites, Journey to the Inner East Vol. 2 tracks the still-rising arc of a label on a mission to develop a lasting personal connection between its artists, listeners and the music we share.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped.......2005-12-06

I really like some of the Bollywood stuff I've heard on my college radio station. I suppose what I've heard represents the best of various CDs. I bought this CD expecting a similar compilation but was disappointed. To my ears, the music on the first CD sounds like Indian versions of American movie music of the 1960's (not my cup of tea). The second CD is more contemporary, but I didn't discover any "gems" among the tracks. That's my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars "producer Yusuf Gandhi presents the pop culture of India's Film Music ~ Bollywood".......2005-11-10

Silva Screen presents "Bollywood - An Anthology of Songs from popular Indian Cinema", featuring some of the greatest Indian performers and their biggest hits from the '40s right up to the present...inclusive on a 2 compact disc compilation...of course the first Indian sound film came into being March 14, 1931 "Alam Ara", since then we've seen thousands of films come out of India...and thanks to my son-in-law Inam Rehman (India), introduced my family and I to the culture of his native land through the films of from his country...much of what I've seen is exciting and interesting...therefor my review could be on the side of being bias, hope not!

The films are always very colorful, but to me it is the music that really grabs you first...films like:

    MAHAL (1949)
    SHREE 420 (1955)
    ASHA (1957)
    HOWRAH BRIDGE (1958)
    KOHINOOR (1960)
    MERE SAAYA (1966)
    MILAN (1967)
    ARADHANA (1969)
    HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA (1971)
    APRADH (1972)
    YAADON KI BAARAAI (1973)
    KABHI KABHI (1976)
KASAM PAJDA KARNE WALE KI (1984)
    HUM (1991)
    ROJA (1992)
    HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN (1994)
    1942: A LOVE STORY (1994)
    AUR PYAR HO GAYA (1997)
    THAKSHAK (1999)
    KAHO NA PYAR HAI (2000)
    ONE 2 KA 4 (2001)

Highlight picks are "Chand Mera Dil", featuring singer Mohammed Rafi, vocals by Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, music by R.D. Burmjan with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri is considered by most the best popular tune of the '70s is pure captivation..."Ina Mina Dika", featuring vocalist Asha Bhosle with blends of Benny Goodman thrown in for good measure..."Na Tum Jano Na Hum", has Lucky Ali and Ramya enjoying themselves with a performance that completely gets under your skin and you're loving every minute of it...the collection is a blast and will give you an overview of "Bollywood" as they keep churning out film after film with music that will satisfy your palette.

Job well done and compiled by producers Yusuf Gandhi and Amarpal Singh Gaind, Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Lalit Mohan Joshi (liner notes) and Silva Screen Records, who within the realm of the Entertainment Industry has captured the essence of "Bollywood Films" through their music and traditions...must have for all "film-score-buffs" and "World Music" fans... in plain words, this is a keeper!

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Only for the die-hard collector..........2007-05-25

While most of the tracks are crisply re-mastered, this anthology simply cannot be recommended due to the bizarre choice of songs. Since when is Charlie Daniels considered a beach music artist? Or Anne Murray? The Weather Girls? And though "Louise Louise Blues" definitely has a beach feel, I couldn't stop laughing at the name of the artist: Axel Zwingenberg. Where's the camera, Mr. Funt? This can't be serious.

All kidding aside, there just aren't enough true beach music songs on here to justify an eighty dollar sticker price. Unless you just have to have every album that has the words "beach music" on it, skip this one. (If you don't believe me, you can always audition the tracks on Amazon's audio page.)

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series, particularly Vol. 4...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear or even become aware of its existence nor of that of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!
