The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!

Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.

This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.

Spectacular Mantovani Music.......2004-09-20

This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. Decca's "Concert Spectacular" CD, never issued and rarely heard in the United States, teases the listener with a distinctive waltz time arrangement of the popular Sousa march, Stars and Stripes Forever. Many will shed a tear when they hear the cathedral sound of languorous strings and woodwinds in Danny Boy. This Concert Spectacular offers the listener a plethora of musical imagery. With extraordinary and unique orchestrations, one will feel the fiery excitement of "Granada", sense the clash of thunder and lightning in Strauss's Polka, and march step and "fall" with the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. These two CD's together are truly spectacular, because their tracks are filled with the emotion and energy of the creative and distinctive Mantovani sound. This is "ultimate Mantovani", soothingly wistful moods and evocative melodies that make you want to listen to them with all the attentiveness of a concert goer, a paradigm for all today making light orchestral music of which Mantovani was truly the master.

A Band That Deserved Far Greater Success.......2007-02-18

Every now and then, one is reminded of bands from the past that could have and should have become bigger stars than they were. Wildfire is such a band. Although they only recorded two albums and one non-LP single, Wildfire show on this, their second and final full-length release that they deserved to fill stadiums with their stellar brand of traditional and connectable English heavy metal.

Summer Lightning is one of those almost-flawless, righteous headbangs. The album starts out with a brief instrumental called "Prelude In F Flat Minor", which ends up catapulting the following track, "The Key" over the walls of the fortress in the same way "The Hellion" did to "Electric Eye" on Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance. Only the awkward power ballad "Give Me Back Your Heart", the somewhat out-of-place popster "Nothing Lasts Forever", and a slightly muddy production job make this gem less than perfect. However the record's highpoints hide these blemishes well. The aforementioned "The Key" with its razor-sharp, steel-piercing, double-harmonized riff, the bounce and strut of the title tune, the driving assault of "Gun Runner", and the magnificent chorus of thundering anthem "Fight Fire With Fire" are only part of the magic that makes Summer Lightning a minor classic. The second half of the equation lies in the fabulous throat of Iron Maiden alum Paul Mario Day, who sounds reminiscent of Dee Snider yet with far greater range, power, and class.

Mausoleum recently reissued this unsung work with a bonus track titled "Jerusalem", a heavy and serviceable take on the old standard which was released as a non-LP single, and predates Bruce Dickinson's superior version by about 15 years.

Summer Lightning is a fine piece of vintage British steel that can bring a smile to a seasoned rivethead's face and also a frown due to the realization that a group of potential legends burned brightly for such a short period of time and were noticed by so few.

The band consists of Lyndon Morgans (vocals, acoustic guitar and songs), Karl Woodward (electric guitars, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, keyboards) and Dave Paterson (drums, keyboards, percussion).
