Sargent D takes on the world.......2007-03-24

S.O.D., started in 1985 by Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, holds a place of significance as being one of the first bands to bridge thrash and hardcore together. S.O.D. presents us with an album full of crude humor juxtaposed with speed and flailing riffs. They didn't quite receive much exposure to the community because the media denounced S.O.D. for the content of the music and was also on the constant defensive with other hardcore bands around. (I remember a particularly nasty incident that occurred at one of the concerts I was present at.) Although S.O.D. wasn't quite the widespread sensation, they maintained true to their nature through the entire spread of their career.

Yes, this makes some people mad, and no it really wasnt intended. MAN, though, some great riffs and speed metal here. Songs like Sargent D Of SOD, Fist Banging Mania, and Freddy Kreuger will have you head banging.PS: if you like early Anthrax like i do, GET THIS!

If you like this album, especially its political message, you might also like Skrewdriver. Although you won't be able to get Skrewdriver on Amazon.com or at Wal-Mart, you can easily get it from independent sites on line. They were the band that literally started the right wing skinhead genre in the 1980s. If you like the lyrics on Speak English or Die, try Skrewdriver's Hail the New Dawn, Blood or Honour, or The Strong Survive. In fact, any of the 20 plus albums from Skrewdriver or any of their side projects are excellent. For far right 80s and early 90s music, besides SOD and MOD, try Skrewdriver!

Legendary! Brutality Meets Humor. .......2006-06-28

I was just floored the first time I heard this as a teenager. The hardcore/thrash crossover mix was unlike anything I had previously encountered. "March of The SOD" has got to have one of the most brutal riffs of all time! Thrash, Death, Black, Hardcore, Punk, Speed, whatever, forget labels. If you're in the mood for sheer brutality mixed with a great dose of humor, this belongs in your collection regardless of your usual tastes!

What more is there to say. Nice heavy chug and funny catchy lyrics. After I heard this I was thinking to myself "I want more!" Beacuse the timing on this album is really short due to thier fast paced style which isn't exactly a bad thing either. If you like metal that doesn't give a crap and makes you want to smash you head against concrete look no further.

S.O.D. Three amazing letters. Most of the particulars have already been pointed out, so... if you have EVER enjoyed a distorted guitar pounding your skull in, semi-intelligible lyrics and maniac (fist-bangers unite!) drumming, then do yourself a favor and pick this one up!!

Thrash-metal classic! The best ever..........1999-07-21

I was turned on to these guys in the early 90s and became a rabid fan - pretty serious considering I was having an "art rock" revivial at the time. These songs are hard-core to the point of hilarity: heavy duty grinding chords, Billy Milano screaming semi-decipherable lyrics as fast as he can, drums trying to keep up. Whenever I'm in a bad mood, I listen to this for an immediate cheering up. Plus, there's finally some lyrics, adding to the experience.

Absolute Thrash Classic!.......1999-07-14

Something happened to thrash/speed metal lately. Metallica cut their hair and thought they were Soundgarden. Megadeth kept its lineup intact and (surprise!) lost their edge. Slayer stayed true to its roots but retreated to the underground. It seemed as if the glorious history spawned by so many of these bands faded in the face of today's homogenous, politically correct fodder of neo-alterna/white-bread pop. Loose bands of rivetheads have kept the faith in defiance. Their numbers are few, but they can take comfort in knowing there exists an album that defines thrash/speed metal and has become the fuse between the genre it helped create and the punk rock that preceded it. It is a timeless collection that flips one big, collective bird at everyone and everything ever since these four at-the-time relative unknowns put (banged?) their heads together to create one of the harshest but silliest slabs of metal ever to grace the wax (plastic). Ladies and gentleman, S.O.D., "Stormtroopers of Death."

Do you like your thrash metal heavy, dark and fast? Do you believe all those hair bands (heavy tinsel, bubble metal, whatever) destroyed the art of metal? Good. Then sit down, shut up and hang on for dear life because this thirty-minute ride into the bowels of thrash is one heck of a trip you won't soon forget!

Formed in the mid-eighties by Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and rhythm guitarist Scott Ian, former Anthrax/Nuclear Assault bassist Dan Lilker and rotund, punk-metal nobody (at the time) Billy Milano, S.O.D. began as a side project./joke for old friends but soon became a cult classic. It would become the bible for every metalhead the world over. The sound is dark. The guitars are heavy, but clean. Benante, a fast and furious double-bass thrasher, pounds out S.O.D.'s punk rhythms on what sounds like a three-piece kit. Milano is a growling and shouting beast of fury that will offend you, make you laugh and make you mosh. The lyrics - if you can understand them (the CD booklet has the lyrics - better use a magnifying glass) - are funny, and poignant. S.O.D. takes pot shots at almost everything: the down and depressed, immigrants, women and the men that love them, hair bands and terrorists. Everything else ranges from some pretty intense instrumental interludes ("March of the S.O.D." and "Chromatic Death" - both used as themes to MTV's "Headbangers Ball") to bits and pieces of wild abandon.

No "Heal the World". No "Let Love Rule." Just mosh. So if you think rock 'n' roll should be a vehicle for change in this world, it's best you walk. If smug, arrogant, pompous, P.C.-rock posers like Sting, Bono and Eddie Vedder touch your very soul, then you better run. S.O.D. "Speak English or Die" is a knee-jerk response to all that is wrong with heavy metal, music in general and, in a humorous way, much of what is wrong with the world, but these guys aren't here to preach. They're here to mosh. They're here to make you laugh. They're here to make you blush. Now give it up for the Stormtroopers of Death. Buy it today and experience metal history!

If you dont own either of these albums yet, or just getting exposed to S.O.D, this is for you. Both "Live At Budoken", and the immortal "Speak English Or Die" are included in this package. Get this along with "Bigger Than The Devil" and you'll already own all the S.O.D albums. Also, get "U.S.A For M.O.D" from M.O.D because it's so close to S.O.D (considering Billy is the singer for both S.O.D and M.O.D),also beause it too rules! Long live Sgt. D!!!!
