Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
what is it?.......2007-05-23
what is this album?
is it Neville Brothers?
is it a try of a music fusion?
is it a try to show the variety af Neville's possibilities?
it's definitely not like Neville's albums before.
Some songs are great (Ball of confusion) others are strange.
Keep your mind open and try to find your own valuation.
May be it leads younger people to the Neville's - that's good!
The Nevilles, hijacked by a hip-hop producer.......2006-11-01
Bought this with no preview at all, I figured a newer Nevilles has to be fine, right? Wrong. I gave this two stars instead of one because I have loved the Nevilles for 30 years and danced to them at Tipitinas after the big parade at Mardi Gras in '78, so out of respect I have to give it a two. This album does not SOUND like the Nevilles, despite their signature Nawlins funk tunes and vocals. Their sound has beed hijacked by producer Milton Davis and replaced with extremely harsh and synthetic sounds that are impossibly grating to the ear. Even a nice organic pop of the snare drum is nowhere to be found, because the drums have been processed to sound like a tinny drum machine. Maybe I just don't get it and they wanted to be edgy on this album but - song after song - there's NOTHING that reminds me of the Nevilles I love, not until track 12 (Brothers). Harsh intruding synthesizers, trebly artificial percussion... no fun. I'm selling mine on eBay, not bothering to rip the tracks.
Get Valence Street if you want a fantastic recent Nevilles album (track 1 "Over Africa" is simply amazing), and you must own Brother's Keeper and my #1 favorite recording overall, Yellow Moon. Heck, I can't think of a single Nevilles album that I don't love - except this one. God bless the Nevilles....
Incredible.......2005-02-08
I just heard the cut, "Junkie Child" on the radio station WWOZ. (For those out of town, you can listen to great New Orleans Jazz @ www.wwoz.org) This song has a very nice twist with a local rapper turned big, BG. Also features Trombone Shorty who is absolutely incredible in person. The Neville Brothers will be touring all over the world coming up very soon. New Orleans is an incredible place. If you like this band, try Rebirth Brass Band, or Kermit Ruffins.
Don't pass up this record.......2004-12-10
The Neville brothers together and individually have been making music in New Orleans and around the world for nearly 50 years. Their better known incarnations include The Meters which had only two of the brothers, The Wild Tchoupitoulas which was a brief single LP with all four of them, and under their own name probably best known for the hit "Fiyo on the Bayou" or "Hey Pocky-a-Way".
This new record represents a true culmanation of the talent of the Nevilles - not just the four brothers but several offspring that join in to help imploy some modern recording techniques and greatly improve the end result. The songs are strong, personal and socially aware. They are varied yet very cohesive - pure New Orleans R&B / Funk.
I hope the Grammy people don't get too consumed with the current trend to synthetic grooves, and still have time to appreciate and honor some of the masters of the organic traditions.
Live.......2004-12-01
I saw them a few weeks ago in Tahoe, I have to say, this album is hot, but hearing them perform live, unreal. To experience musicians now, who sound better in person than on the cd, are few and far between. Great cd, songs with heart and originality. Love it.

Customer Reviews:
Really, really, REALLY BAD!.......2006-11-22
Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.
Deceptive Title & Trade Dress.......2006-07-27
The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.
This was a major disappointment.......2006-06-21
Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.
Not worth your money.......2006-05-14
Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.
LOTR meets New Age.......2005-10-01
I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

"The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07
"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~
Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.
The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!
Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.
The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.
This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!
Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28
My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??
She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29
Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!
Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.
Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.
On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.
She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.
She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.
Hearing her sing live is like being home!
Astonishing.......2003-09-04
I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...
Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04
Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.
5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29
Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?
Simple reason.
The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.
On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.
Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.
Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.
Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.
Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)
Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.
"Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09
Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!
Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.
Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.
Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen

A good performance graced by a five-star recording.......2007-01-18
What makes this account of Ein Heldenleben memorable is the engineering--we are set dead in the middle of the Vienna Phil, and hear the orchestra exactly as the conductor does. Some critics object to this up=close perspective, and it's true that solo violin, piccolo, or an entire brass section leap forward as needed. But it's exciting, and Thielemann brings out every detail. He's short on inpsiration; this is essentially a straight-faced reading without poetry or charm, but Strauss wrote so much detail into the score that even a no-nonsense approach yields sumptuous results; all the more with today's Vienna Phil, an ensemble of astonishing virtuosity, here displayed in full.
Musically, I'm more enthusiastic about the filler, Strauss's own symphonic synthesis form Die Frau ohne Schatten. On Reference Records you can hear a stupendously recorded suite taken from the opera's orchestral interludes (Oue, Minnesota Orch.), not all of which were used by the composer for this work. Die Frau isn't enitrely memorable melodically but is the epitome of Strauss's orchestral mastery, and having heard Thielemann conduct it at the Met, I know he can hold its many layers and textures together. He does so here, and once again the Vienna Phil. is beyond compare in its execution. Five stars without hesitation for this part of the program.
Thrilling, Somewhat Heavy-Handed Heldenleben Plus A Superb Rendition Of "Die Frau ohne Schatten" Fantasy.......2006-09-23
I look forward to new recordings by Christian Thielemann, he is one of the most inspired modern day conductors of Late-Romantic, Austro-German repertoire. He's already recorded two Wagner operas! ( Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal ). Deutsche Grammophon clearly sees a winning talent on their team. Thielemann has also recorded several orchestral works of Richard Strauss. First came some early opera excerpts, then came a fine account of the Alpine Symphony coupled with the suite from Der Rosenkavalier and here we have his most recent foray into the Strauss works with this massive Ein Heldenleben and the 22 minute symphonic fantasy from Die Frau Ohne Schatten.
Right away from the opening of Hero's Life, you know you've got a true individual spirit on the podium leading the magnificient body of the Vienna Philharmonic. They sound grand and extravagant, Thielemann asks for plenty of weight from the basses up through to the soaring violins. There is a great depth of sound and people who generally prefer leaner readings, like Fritz Reiner's famous account on RCA, will initially be skeptical of Thielemann's go for the grandeur approach. The opening Hero section is majestic if a bit over-weighted, perhaps somewhat more impetus would have helped. The section with the critics goes by just fine and in the famous section with the Hero's Beloved we hear that Thielemann isn't here to dawdle or overplay anything. He moves things very nicely, just like Karajan did on his famous Heldenleben recordings. Remember that this whole violin portrayal of the wife can get rather tedious in the wrong conductor's hands, especially if their tempo is too slow. Thielemann succeeds by playing this section quite well, the strings in the second part are great and everything sounds like it's in it's natural tempo. Thielemann clearly knows what he's doing in the famous Battle Scene, there is power aplenty as well as sensuousness and inner detail. Ultimately he can't top or approach the madness, go for broke quality that Herbert von Karajan made you experience in the Battle Scene. I think Simon Rattle's recent EMI version is also slightly ahead of Thielemann in this part but certainly Christian is better than most of his competitors.
The later section with the Hero's Works of Peace and his Retirement from the World and Fulfillment are lovely, Thielemann focuses on the lovely melodies and some listeners who like to have things move more quickly might not like it but I thought it was very beautiful. All in all I would say that this Heldenleben is a winner, a truly muscular, if perhaps at times over-weighted, somewhat bloated account. The sound is great, detailed but with plenty of warmth and a lush, terrific perspective.
The Die Frau Fantasy is a must listen too. It's 22 minutes of music, most of the famous melodies from the opera are laced together to create this symphonic synthesis. The ravishing orchestral interludes of Act 2 in the opera don't find their way into this 22 minute synthesis, so you'll have to listen to a complete opera recording to hear them as well as all the gorgeous music of this work in full. I recommend Georg Solti's complete Die Frau Ohne Schatten on Decca as a reference recording for this majestic opera, one of Richard Strauss' finest achievements.
However, listening to this entire opera is a long haul indeed, so it is wonderful that Thielemann chose to record this Die Frau Fantasy to give people an exquisite taste of this seductive work. His performance is practically ideal, he brings the same qualities of the Heldenleben account to bear on this score. The warm, lush sound coupled with the great outbursts of orchestral power, it's fantastic. In making orchestal suites of operas, it's tough to put the material together in a cogent way, I think Strauss does fine but you'll really want to hear the opera itself after this. The climax of the work on this recording is strikingly powerful but in the opera it can get just overwhelming, what with the chorus and soloists singing their hearts out, it's amazing!
Anyway, look into the complete opera, this Thielemann recording is but a taste, cat-nip for all you lovers of Late-Romantic musical excess! A fine recording of both pieces under Christian Thilemann, even though his Heldenleben does not in anyway eclipse Herbert von Karajan's many versions, ( especially Karajan's great EMI recording from 1974 ), Thielemann does just fine when compared to his recent competitors in this music like Simon Rattle, whose Heldenleben on EMI I have also reviewed. Four stars for Thielemann, four stars for Rattle, always five stars for Karajan!
Compact Die Frau.......2006-03-17
This is an excellent way to hear Strauss' thematic ideas for Die Frau ohne Schatten without listening to the entire opera. The Symphonic Fantasie is a beautifully crafted stand alone orchestra piece. This recording is wonderfully performed and keeps one's interest from beginning to end.
Love Strauss, Love Thielemann!.......2006-03-11
This is one wondrous recording on every level. Christian Thielemann is becoming one our more important Straussian conductors: he has a particular affinity for the drama and majesty of Strauss' sometimes over-the-top writing. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra responds to Thielemann with not only obvious respect but also with all out, full throttle brilliance of playing.
A welcome addition to the recorded repertoire is Thielemann's choice of including 'Die Frau ohne Schatten' symphonic fantasy on this CD (this was recorded in the studio as opposed to the Ein Heldenleben which was recorded live). The 'Fantasy' of excerpts may not be the wisest synthesis Strauss made of his own music, but just to have the pleasure of hearing the gorgeous orchestral portions of that great opera without the voices is a treat.
But on to the primary reason for applause: 'Ein Heldenleben' here receives one of the most satisfyingly fresh and well-conceived performances on record. The various 'movement/sections' remain suitably depictive, but it is the overall vision of this score that makes Thielemann's grasp so sound. This is Strauss played with all the voluptuousness and elegant line and sonorous melody that is inherent in this score so often overblown in the hands of lesser conductors. The engineering is of the highest quality resulting in a sound that must be heard to be believed. This is truly a magnificent recording. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 06
Splendor from the best living Strauss conductor.......2004-04-24
Vienna and Thielemann - it works like a charm! Be it Tristan & Isolde or their piece by piece Strauss collection: Thielemann is most at home in this musical vernacular, and the VPO (= WPh) is one of the best orchestras to do it with... together with the Munich Philharmonic.
The latter Orchestra happens to have been the one where I heard Thielemann conduct this live. I didn't even notice it was Thielemann (I had just 'stopped by' the concert house, not looking at the program), I was so enthralled with the music. Similar things can be achieved with this record -- but only when listened to at extreme volumes OR on headphones. The sweeping nature will be - despite it being the best sonic quality record of Ein Heldenleben on the market - lost on your average boombox. It would be such a waste. Even the cheapest headphones quadruple the enjoyment.
The FrOSch-fantasie is entirely forgettable, but that's Strauss's fault, not Thielemann's. This is, together with Karajan's early account (EMI) and of course the supreme Kempe account (EMI, also) the Heldenleben to get... it is also the best in terms of sound quality.

Customer Reviews:
Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29
With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.
beautiful.......2001-01-22
Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.
Excellent!.......2001-01-04
Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.
It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22
I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.
Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20
I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

It contains songs not on other CD........2007-01-01
I am pretty happy with the CD I have. I noticed that these songs are not on other CD. Summer Time in Venice, Three Coins in the Fountain, The Impossible Dream, Send in The Clown, Somewhere My Love and Elizabethan Serenade. The sound quality is acceptable.
The Best Of The Mantovani Orchestra.......2004-04-13
This cd is an ok collection of tunes from Mantovani. It's not the best but it's ok.This 2 cd set features songs such as three coins in a fountain, send in the clowns, skater's waltz, for once in my life and others. This isn't the only version of for once in my life Mantovani did. This version is light strings.Manti's other version is with a harpsicord and heavy strings. It is on Mantovani Scene/Mantovani Sound which has just come out from Vocolion. It also has such songs as dear heart, both sides now, honey and a lot of others.Amazon doesn't have this yet but I have just recieved my copy from another website.Like the other viewer said unfortuanly the sound quality is bad on the best of collection.I even heard somebody coughing on one track and there is some tape hiss from the transfer.I would like to recommend a 2 cd set by John Fox going under the name of the starry night orchestra that is put out by yestermusic(good music group)and has 30 tracks by Mr.Fox.Every song has a heavy string contingment and it states that these were played on beautiful music stations.John Foxes Strings are so beautiful.
The John Fox I'm talking about isn't the same John Fox that is a commedian that is sold on this site.
The Best of the Mantovani Orchestra (vol 1 & 2).......2002-09-14
The Madacy Label has betrayed Mantovani's genious, and substituted poor recordings in these 2 CD's. I have immediately
cancelled all Madacy Label orders with everyone, and will investigate all future items with a Canadian origin prior to purchase.

Poor Recording.......2002-09-05
The quality of the recording is poor. You can hear flutter in the string passages, which is 90% of Mantovani's music! There is also hiss noise, and pops in piece transitions... Amateur transcription from tape to CD's, is my guess. Someone else made bad reviews regarding the poor recording on the same record label, so my suggestion is to stay away from the label Madacy Records.
Top of the "Beautiful Music" Heap.......2001-02-19
This CD has a nice collection of Mantovani's work. The combination of older standards with "newer" (such as Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life")is great. This is the stuff that is usually mocked as "elevator music" but also considered by many good romancing background music. Many of these arrangements were heard on a local Beautiful Music FM station where I live before the format change. The only negative I have is for a "box set" there is no write-up on the Orchestra. It would have been nice to read about Mantovani and what inspired his arrangements, and the orchestra personnell. My copy was made in Canada by Madacy. Maybe someone who has contact with that company could recommend a booklet for any future copies made.

The Real Thing.......2007-01-27
I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.
Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02
The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!
