1 out of 5 stars Metal fans, avoid at all costs........2004-12-02

If you're a fan of metal, particularly from the 80s, beware. This CD is full of butchered versions of some of your favorite songs, by emo and pop/punk bands. I wonder if this is supposed to be a tribute to metal, or an insult.

"I Remember You", originally by Skid Row and covered here by the Ataris, is particularly bad. Once a sincere, emotional ballad with an awesome guitar solo, The Ataris managed to turn it into run-of-the-mill pop/punk garbage. I half expected the singer to scream "let's go!" at some point in the song. And speaking of the singer, he can't even handle the entire song, and is forced to sample Sebastian Bach's original lyrics later on.

And as if that weren't bad enough, their are butchered versions of classic songs by Guns N' Roses, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and ACDC.

2 out of 5 stars Punk Goes Poseur Metal.......2003-12-02

It is too bad that the makers of this album did not choose REAL metal songs to sing. (Like songs from Slayer, Pantera, Bloodbath, Dying Fetus, Bolt Thrower, Ministry or at least early Metallica) They choose phony, overproduced corporate garbage hair metal songs. I can see why so many punk rockers hate metal. They think metal is about some jackass in spandex with an annoyingly high voice who is so detatched from reality and lives in a mansion in Beverly Hills. Probably the only good part is that AFI doesn't sound like Guns N' Poseurs, or maybe that Divit doesn't sound like Judass Priest (which was really a cheap and corny imitation of Black Sabbath)

2 out of 5 stars Eh........2002-05-27

I don't like 80's metal. Period. I grew up surrounded by it, but never got into it at all. Maybe had I been a bit older or paying more attention during that time period, these covers would mean much more to me. But as a listener now, I ask myself: "What is the need for another 'punk covers metal' comp?" In the past few months, we have already had "Metalliska!" and "I Love Metal," [and don't forget the Shai Hulud/Boy Sets Fire covering Metallica 7"] both of which had their moments, but the whole CD just ends up being too long and boring. Punk Goes Metal is the same way. It clocks in with 17 tracks at over an hour, and the standouts are few and far between. AFI does do a nice version of "My Michelle" by Guns N Roses, and Dynamite Boy plays a pretty faithful rendition of "TNT" by AC/DC. Otherwise, the CD just lags on and on. This will sell a whole bunch of copies, due to the inclusion of Strung Out, Ten Foot Pole, Jughead's Revenge, The Ataris, The Aquabats, and Link 80, to name a few. One can just hope that we're reached the end of this metal revival phase or what have you, and we can all move on with our lives. And if you really want to purchase a covers compilation, get "Before You Were Punk" Volumes 1 and 2, which have more than just cheesy metal tracks on them.

4 out of 5 stars Fairy Tale Album??.......2001-07-08

Once upon a time, Joey surfed on to [the web]hoping to find the best cover album ever. He happened to stumble across "Punk Goes Metal" and gave it a disapproving glance, thinking to himself "The eighties were horrible. Come on! Look at these artists! I've never seen them on MTV!" Since Billy's birthday was coming up, Joey decided to buy it for him for a joke. When the CD finally came, Joey gave it to Billy and forced him to pop it in his stereo at once, all the while thinking they'd have a great laugh about it. The first song came on and suddenly Joey realized that this CD was actually good. In fact, this CD was very good. These bands took songs he thought [were bad]and made them great. Billy on the other hand loved the eighties, and he was impressed at how these songs he thought were perfect could actually be improved! By the end on the CD, both Joey and Billy were singing along and having a wonderful time, and they lived happily ever after.

4 out of 5 stars Ok........2001-06-07

I agree, there are a few good songs, like "Breaking The Law," "Heaven," and "I Remember You." But here's my review of the whole album.

1.Divit-Breaking The Law-5 stars. A much needed re-recording done by a gret punk band.

2-Jughead's Revenge-2.5 stars. I never liked the old version. This version is ok, but it sounds the same.

3.AFI-My Michelle-4 stars. Pretty good, but the song has been ignored for some time.

4.Bigwig-War Ensemble. 5 stars. More like 10! This is the highlight of the album. Great blues part.

5.A New Found Glory-Heaven. 4 stars. Nice cover, and good solo.

6.Strung Out-Bark At The Moon. 3 stars. Sounds almost the same, except American accent and trippy part.

7.Ataris-I Remember You. 5 stars. Much better than the old version. Good solo and punk pace. Nice part with the old singer doing that AAA part when they couldn't.

8.Link 80-Harvester of Sorrow. 5 stars. Very cute with the punk verses and horn section. Too bad it's short.

9.Guttermouth-Sexual Abuse. 4 stars. Never heard the original, but this is ok, i guess.

10.Dynamite Boy-TNT. 1 star. I hate AC/DC. This makes me hate them even more.

11.Death by Stereo-Little Fighter. 4 stars. I know it's [bad]. But, I guess they were having fun.

12.Swindle-Youth Gone Wild. 3,5 stars. The original is a lot better. This is a more punk version and in a higher pitch. It's good, but the original's better.

13.Turnedown-I Don't Know. 3.5 stars. The original was a lot better, with Rhoads old solo. Don't mix Ozzy with 80's rock.

14.Diesel Boy-Looks That Kill. 1 star. Ugh, Motley Crue sucks. This proves it. Oh Well, they had fun.

15.Rx Bandits-Holy Wars. 5 stars, Now, this was intresting. A horn section and a reggae part. Interesting. Once again, Don't mix this band with 80's rock. MEGADETH RULES!

16.Ten Foote Pole-Love Song. 3 stars. I never heard the original, but this is good punk.

17.The Aquabats-Why Rock? 5 stars. This is cheesy, but it's fun.

Good album, minus the horrible covers. A fun effort.
