Album Description
A STUNNING CD RELEASE BY KAREN MARIE GARRETT AND LEGENDARY PRODUCER WILL ACKERMAN, creator of Windham Hill Records, gold and platinum record producer, and Grammy Award-Winning recording artist.
Recorded between George Lucas' Skywalker Sound Studios in Marin County, California and Mr. Ackerman's Imaginary Road Studio in Windham County, Vermont.
VICTORY REVIEW; ACOUSTIC MUSIC RESOURCE OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST; TOM PETERSEN
"Karen Marie Garrett is a top-drawer pianist headed for bigger things. Allure of Sanctuary is the Olympia artist's third release, following a straight classical disc and another in this New Age vein. This new release is as soothing as it's intended, but it's also energizing. Where a lot of New Age is so light it begins to drift and grow unidentifiable, Garrett's compositions are distinct, with melodies for the listener to hook into. It's billed as New Age, but several cuts qualify as Light Jazz - very mellow Vince Guaraldi, perhaps. Thus, Garrett is a distinctive new artist in this field and could, with the right promotion, see herself at the top of the New Age charts (Allure is already getting significant airplay on Easy Listening stations). It won't hurt a bit that she is a pupil of the founder of the New Age genre, Will Ackerman; nor do dead-enders get invited to record their albums at Skywalker ranch, using Lucas's Bluthner grand!
Get this album, neighbors - you can say you "knew her when."

Allure of Sanctuary is an outstanding album. The music seems to draw you in and want to play it over again
Allure of Sanctuary.......2007-05-13
I received this as an Easter present and it is one of the best CD's I have heard in a long time. The music is wonderful.
A Brilliant Piano Album (reviewed by Stephen Cairns at [...]).......2006-12-09
What an amazing album! This is Karen Marie Garrett's third album, and it is a real find. I am immensely impressed with the delightful melodies which run consistently throughout this album. Tip-Toe Dancer has to be heard to be believed. It is such a beautiful piece of music, and makes the listener want to stand up and start dancing. This track is just one of an album full of highlights. Welcome B and Simple Things are so delicate. This album is produced by Windham Hill founder Will Ackerman. Consequently, the production is first-class. A joy from beginning to end. Bravo!!
Allure of Sanctuary.......2006-07-19
Soothing, relaxing music to release tension and smooth out those tight muscles.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-11-14
"Allure of Sanctuary" is the second CD released by Karen Marie Garrett. It is astounding how much this artist has grown since her 2002 debut, "Pensare Piano." Will Ackerman's gifts as producer certainly helped to make this CD as breathtaking as it is, but if the quality of music isn't there, no producer in the world can give it soul and depth - and this CD has mega-doses of both. A classically-trained pianist from the age of five, Ms. Garrett plays with the strength and emotional clarity that come from years of expressing oneself at the piano, sharing the joys and sorrows of life with the beloved 88's. The twelve pieces include eight original compositions, a lovely arrangement of "The Green Hills" by Brian Gibson, and Erik Satie's "Trois Gnossiennes," performed as originally composed. Most of the pieces are piano solo, but Garrett is joined on two by award-winning cellist Eugene Friesen (I LOVE cello and piano together!). Some of the other tracks have English horn, light percussion, and wordless vocals, but this is truly an incredible piano album.
The CD begins with "Tip-Toe Dancer (Kathryn's Song)," one of the lighter pieces in this collection. It was inspired by a story told by a close friend about a childhood dance performed for friends and family. Graceful yet playful, it is easy to imagine the seriousness of the young dancer and the warm reception of the adults. "Lake EWOK Muse" is an improvisational duet for piano and cello that followed a sunrise meditation beside Lake EWOK at Skywalker Ranch, where the album was recorded. The feeling of serenity envelops you as you listen to the two artists interact seamlessly, creating a perfect sense of peace. "Simple Things" is a celebration that begins in a classical style reminiscent of a children's piano study and evolves, retaining the sweet melody and simplicity of the message but becoming a full and graceful solo. The title track is fascinating. It begins with a mournful piano prelude and becomes a rhythmic dance with a seductive Spanish flavor. Susan Whittle's vocals and percussion provided by Will Ackerman and Derrick Jordan add to the enchantment. "Will's Song" is an improvisational piece that is so deeply felt that it almost sends a chill - what a beauty! "Toll of War (Adagio)" is a wrenching duet for piano and cello. A profound statement of humanity rather than of politics, the sense of loss and pain reach to the depths of the soul. This is a piece that needs to be heard. The gentle, pensive closing track is a solo piano reprise of "Lake EWOK Muse."
"Allure of Sanctuary" is a must-have CD!

Old School Impression.......2007-01-24
These two albums bring back memories of blues light parties and those after school dances. This is Curtis at his best, after Jerry Butler left;the songs make you think back to those days of no worries and the fun that you had. My favorite song is, "Long, Long winter".
Double Shot of Brilliance!.......2004-10-03
A couple of 1964/65 albums from Curtis Mayfield and company, the trio was at their peak form. "I've Been Trying" is beautiful, the WOO-HOO-00-0 at the end will send chills up the spine (it's also a twin brother of Billy Stewart's "I Do Love You"). They get bluesy for "Sometimes I wonder" and continue the high standards for "Don't Let It Hide." Overall, great stuff.
two superlative albums on one cd.......2001-05-28
what can i say about this disc? How 'bout this: if the only cuts here were the ones we've all heard before, ie People Get Ready, Keep on Pushing, Amen, I've Been Trying, et al, it would, of course, be a must have. But, just for a moment, forget about those classics, and realize you're getting stuff here you are probably going to be hearing for the first time. And let me say, you'll be in heaven...Long Long Winter, I Thank Heaven, I've Found That I've Lost, Hard to Believe, and See the Real Me. If only there were someone around these days who could make music one one-hundredth this enjoyable.

A Decent Album.......2000-01-29
If you are buying this CD for the song "Time Has Come Today" don't bother. That song is not on this album. You may want to look at the Chamber Brothers greatest hits, which is also available on Amazon. Still this cd does have some good tracks on it like "Money, and Long Tall Sally". Overall just a decent cd.
Time.......1999-09-17
Time has come today, Young hearts go that way, Dont put it off another day This is the best cd If you like the chamber brothers, youll like this if you like that time song youll like this If i could pick one of my cd's to review about the chambers brothers, it would be this I think their time song is better than the no talent rolling stones and the one hit wonder band, Pink Floyd This band had sooooo many more hits than that P.F. garbage. The Bottom Line.......2004-07-11
From the distorted guitar start of "People Get Ready" to its soulful finish, the Mooney Suzuki proves beyond the shadow of doubt that great American rock still exists. What this album lacks in depth in more than makes up for with attitude. This is roots rock the way it was originally created. After giving this one a listen you can list about 100 bands that they remind you of, yet borrow absolutely nothing. The Mooney Suzuki have a very distinct sound in a somewhat cloned genre. I believe most reviewers are a little too liberal with the 5 star rating, but I feel I can deem this one an "underground" classic.
rock n' roll!.......2003-05-22
in my opinion this album is better than electric sweat... it is more representative of their awesome live show. whenever i need a mooney fix and they're not in town i pop this cd in and it eases my pain. this band is the greatest rock n roll band of recent time, maybe its because they sound so much like the oldtimers. if you like mc5 and no gimmicks rock n roll- buy it!!
Why the Hype?.......2003-04-17
I expected great things from this album after buying the "Your love is a gentle whip" 7". I listened to this album one time and never picked it up again. I don't know why this band is being hyped now, there is better "garage rock" out there, like Supercharger, The No-talents, and Teengenerate. If you are new to the whole garage rock thing go elsewhere.
What's not to like?.......2003-04-06
No, it's not as good as 'Electric Sweat'; yes, it's self-consciously retro, even (dare I say it) kitschy -- but that doesn't stop 'People Get Ready' from working as an exercise in balls-out rock'n'roll that's also a lot of fun. And don't write these guys off as a novelty nostalgia act, either. 'A Song About Today' is one of those absolutely flawless songs that has everything in exactly the right place -- the vocals border on hysterical, the guitars feed back at the right pitch, the bassline drops an octave at exactly the right moment. Best of all, it's exactly what it claims to be: a song about today. Some tracks here are a little weak, but who cares? Not only do these guys pair unpretentious rock (no grunge-era navel gazing or punk-era angst here) with old fashioned rock attitude (as if there were anything wrong with a little showmanship), for the last track they trot out and honest-to-god organ. Point to the Stooges, the MC5, the New York Dolls and even the Flamin' Groovies as primary influences all you want; but that organ is pure Faces.
MOONEY SUZUKI ROCK.......2002-11-06
A good disc by a really good band, but not a great one. If you want to really hear GREAT ROCK N ROLL, go and buy the THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS disc "SAVE ROCK N ROLL"! They played with MS last week and totally blew them away... A much better investment of your money and a MUCH BETTER BAND.

How many harmony groups took their cue from the Impressions? How many songwriters forged a worldview from the compassionate commentary penned by Curtis Mayfield, the group's mouthpiece? People Get Ready! The Curtis Mayfield Story is a three-disc celebration of the immeasurably influential singer, songwriter, and guitarist as an Impression and as a solo artist. People tend to associate him with Superfly, the seminal blaxploitation flick for which he composed the groundbreaking score. What's striking, however, is how timely Mayfield remained over the course of three and a half decades. Want to understand the mind of a middle-aged African American who's lived through Jim Crow, the civil rights, Vietnam, black power, street crime, homelessness, and even crippling injury (Mayfield was paralyzed in the early '90s)? Listen to these discs. What's striking, though, is that, through all that, he never stopped writing love songs. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive Curtis Mayfield Collective...Minus One!.......2006-05-24
The only reason I am giving ths box set of the great
Curtis Mayfield 4 stars is because it is missing two
jams that I love and that's..."Right On For The Darkness",
which was used in the 1995 film classic "Dead Presidents"
as well as "Little Child Runnin' Wild" which set the opening tone
of his classic soundtrack "Superfly", which is where most of the
young-headz know about him from!
Other than that oversight, this is the definitive
portrait of a great artist whose music was influential
to alot of people and whose songwriting and
lyrical skills inspired everyone from
Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen...Stevie Wonder,
Marvin Gaye & Sly Stone to Bob Marley!!
Not to mention countless of millions who are
discovering and rediscovering his genius today!
People - Get Ready For The Great Curtis Mayfield.......2005-12-30
This 3-CD anthology is a fitting and thorough tribute to an often overlooked master. Curtis Mayfield was a complete package. His pure and fragile falsetto put The Impressions on the map. His songwriting ability was striking, especially his socially aware and brutally honest lyrics. His guitar playing was always fresh and very influential. Any one of those would have been enough to build a career.
But the real magic of Curtis Mayfield was the man himself, his vulnerability, his soul, his sincerity. In a cynical age such as ours, the depth of feeling required to write a song like My Country is almost unknown. And a song like I'm So Proud Of You, well, if that doesn't melt your heart, you ain't got one. The big hits from Superfly are here, because they have to be. They're good, especially Pusherman. But this compilation lets you stretch out and get a full appreciation of Mayfield, as generous and brave as any artist I've ever experienced.
We're a Winner.......2003-12-26
When I hear the music of Curtis Mayfield in this three-disc box set (51 songs), especially the early stuff, I feel really uplifted. The first 13 songs alone-all gems-are worth the price. To my knowledge, they are not available together on any other recording.
In thinking about the contribution he's made to music, it occurred to me that Curtis had all of the rare qualities that made the Beatles so great. He was: (1) a fabulous songwriter; (2) a stone soul singer; (3) a crack musician; (4) a music pioneer; and, (5) politically conscious. Indeed, born in '42, he was a contemporary of the Beatles and was perhaps ahead of them in many ways. While the Beatles were singing, to teenaged girls, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," (early '64), Curtis was telling a woman "I'm So Proud of Being...Loved by You."
His music had a maturity and political consciousness ahead of its time. By 1965, for example, he had penned "Woman's Got Soul"
"She may not be the best-lookin' woman, I ever did see,
or have the charms of the ladies of high society.
But the woman's got soul,
worth all the...gold"
As large corporations increasingly dominate our politics, media, and culture, Curtis's words from 1968 are still right on the money:
"Some people think, we don't have the right,
to say, "It's my country'.
Before they give in,
they'd rather fuss and fight,
than say, `It's my country'".
I guess what I like the most about Curtis Mayfield is the honesty of his songs and the pure, sweet expression of his voice. He could really do a heartbreak song, as shown in
"I Loved and I Lost...and I might as well confess"
Probably my favorite song of all is the single "The Makings of You," which, apparently (incredibly), did not chart in 1970.
"Add a little sugar,
Honeysuckle Lamb,
a great big expression of happiness...
The joy of children laughing around you,
these are the makings of you."
Actually, it doesn't matter what he's singing on this song. The purity and soulfulness of his voice is apt to bring a tear. And the music is so pretty; it could be on the soundtrack to a movie.
Many people enjoy the "Superfly" era of Curtis Mayfield (roughly 1970-73)-with it's funk-like rhythms and orchestration on songs such as "Move on Up" "Freddie's Dead" "Get Down" and "Pusherman". In fact, that's the music most people probably think of when they hear his name. That period is well represented in this set, mostly on disc two. My favorites are "We Got to Have Peace," "If I Were Only a Child Again" and 1975's "So in Love."
There are three live songs at the end of disc one, "Check Out Your Mind," "Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)", and "Stone Junkie" which shows a different side of Curtis-as the leader of a band that could funk and groove, and connect with a live audience.
On disc three ('76-`90), Curtis exhibits a more laid-back approach, including a return to love songs such as "Between You Baby and Me" (with Linda Clifford), "Love Me, Love Me Now" and "Tripping Out". He never lost his social conscious, however, as represented in the songs "Mr. Welfare Man" and "Homeless"
I enjoy discs two and three but, overall, I'm partial to the stuff did with the Impressions (12 songs), and his earliest solo stuff (on disc one). This disc, by itself, is worth every dime you pay for the set.
This box set includes a well-written booklet about Curtis's music career, with many great photos.

i'll try to keep this short as i can, curtis was a leader in soul, a funk pioneer, rock legend, a street scholar, ghetto prophet, and more we lost a great man in 1999-curtis predicted these things back in the 70's and i'll be damn if these things are not being fulfilled now.if there's a hell brlow is deep with lyrics saying everybody snorting use the pill and the dope, or everybody praying and everybody saying but when it comed time to do everybody's laying, deep, curtis is talking about times then and now for not much has changed, the song we the people who are darker than blue is deep where curtis tells all black people dark, and light skinned that we are in the same boat. kung fu is dope, future shock dope, freddie's dead is where a junkie gets murdered, lyrics saying everybody's misused him ripped him off and abused him another junkie plan pushing dope for the man a tyerrible blow but that's how it go ooh freddie's on the corner now if you wanna be a junkie wow. deep deep, yes drugs continue to destroy the black community. please get this to hear some of the best soul music ever recorded.young kids should check this out to see where real hip hop came from not the mainstream ... you hear on bet, amd mtv, and vh1.

A definate ad-on.......2002-06-28
This CD collects together a lot of good songs written over the past few decades, as well as some songs written just for the CD.At least three of these songs date back to the 60's or 70's, "I wish we'd all been ready" was the theme song to the 1972 movie "A Thief in the Night"; "Eve of Destruction" has Viet-Nam refrences, but if you were to change a few words around it could be apropos for today.Anyway the songs that are being presented are timeless, and when are strung together create a possible vision of things that could happen when the Biblical rapture may occur.
Inspired collection inspires me!.......2001-11-13
What I found so great about this cd, besides the great music and even greater message, was the variety of artists that are featured here. There is literally something for (just about) every musical taste here. From sweeping ballads ("I Wish We'd All Been Ready" - dc Talk), to alternative pop-rock ("New Body" - Audio Adrenaline) to R & B gospel-soul ("People Get Ready" - The Impressions and "Jesus is Waiting" - Al Green). Barry McGuire adds a gritty Bob Dylan flare to his rendition of "Eve of Distruction" and Cyrstal Lewis lends her beautiful vocals to the opening and title track "People Get Ready" (a different song from the one The Impressions do later in the disk).
The hugely popular book series has already inspired many with it's gripping and exciting end-times story line and spiritual message. This collection is a fitting tribute indeed.
AWESOME CD!.......2001-06-05
It's a great CD, fits in quite well with the book series it was inspired by. For those that do not know this CD was inspired by the Left Behind Series, which I HIGHLY recommend to EVERYONE.
Can't Do It Much Better Than This.......2001-05-31
People Get Ready is all about songs about God's return. It does that with every angle of singing.
