This North Carolina pre-grass quartet takes old-time, string- band, and fiddle tunes and injects them with a propulsive energy and buoyant spirit. To a certain extent, that's what Bill Monroe did more than 50 years earlier, but unlike Big Mon, the Hoppers stick to the old-time repertoire exclusively, digging up fine 1920s and 1930s gems; they also retain old-time's rougher edges, stopping short of bluegrass's precision. Certainly, they have the chops to merit liner notes from the venerable Charles Wolfe, especially David Bass on fiddle, who handles his romping contest-fiddling splashes with aplomb. Banjoist Frank Lee and guitarist Cary Fridley offer standout harmonizing, as on the Carter Family's "Anchored in Love," "Warfare," and "We Shall All Be Reunited;" Fridley's striking a cappella dirge "A Roving on a Winter's Night" marks another highlight. Despite their talent, taste in material, and exuberance, however, they seem to lack that tiny little distinguishing characteristic that would carry them to the next level. Still, the sundae is quite tasty, even if the cherry's missing. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Check out "We Shall All Be Reunited".......2002-03-10

This album gives old standards fire and passion. If you are fond of mountain music and the American folk tradition, this might very well be a great pick to get you up and dancing. In a number of songs on this album, the sound-focus is primarily on the fiddle playing. More of an instrumental give-and-take might have added a little extra color in places. Yet the vocal harmonizing is really something special, and the ballads add a special beauty. I got this album after traveling through the great state of New Hampshire and hearing a song called "We Shall All Be Reunited." If you get a copy of this album for this song and this song only, you will be richly rewarded. To hear such a sweet voice singing these nostalgic and hopeful words was a true honor for me. Thanks, Cary Fridley!

5 out of 5 stars The Freights are even tighter on this, their second CD........1999-09-28

This group is magic as a unit. They play with awareness and respect for the old-time styles, but above all, with enthusiasm and focus. The solo ballads are also beautifully sung.

3 out of 5 stars old music, new life.......1998-10-02

It's no simple trick to carry old-time Southern music into the late 20th Century, especially when those grand 1920s recordings from which the revivalist bands draw their repertoires are readily available in reissues from Yazoo, Revenant, Smithsonian/Folkways, and other labels. But the Freight Hoppers pull it off more successfully than any outfit we've heard in a while. In fact, they're surely the most accomplished neo-old-time outfit since the legendary Highwoods Stringband in the 1970s. The songs here are largely standards -- "Nobody's Business" in particular should have been left in mothballs -- but on the whole the Freight Hoppers manage to make even the worn-out sound fresh, through distinctive arrangements, unusual melodies, and pleasing harmonies. They cut right to the heart, at once dark and hopeful, of the venerable hymn "We Shall All Be Reunited," and the warhorse "Shortenin' Bread" comes roaring back to life in their accomplished hands. All in all, this engaging and entertaining exercise gives us cause for hope that even better is to come.

4 out of 5 stars sucks so good.......2005-11-24

my boyfriend just bought me this album for my birthday two days ago, and i've already listened to it ten times. the tunes are funny as hell, certainly, but also incredibly catchy. comparisons to peaches (and various other electroclash groups like tracy + the plastics) are definitely merited, although the addition of an obviously californian hip-hop sensibility in favour of (slightly pretentious) european-style techno beats sets gravy train!!!! apart. unselfconsciously dirty and silly. may inspire one to commit various unnatural acts.

3 out of 5 stars Raunchy, wicked, and fun.......2005-05-23

She got f***ed by a fry! Burger baby is probably one of the best songs on this album. It's so strange and hilarious. The girl gets pregnant by a french fry and almost has a burger baby abortion. She decides to keep her burger baby by the end of the song. Yeah, the whole album is like that. Strange lyrics that will keep you laughing for years to come. When I was trying to study for finals, this album kept me up even in the late hours of the night. Raunchy, wicked, and fun but may be too extreme for granny. Gravy Train!!!! sounds like the B-52s on an acid trip.

5 out of 5 stars Hunx is the Man!.......2004-07-13

I just saw Gravy Train!!!! play last night and boy was I happy. They have become one of my most played bands quickly. The lyrics are so funny and terrible that it's brilliant. Plus hunx is really a hunk! Yowser!

    but this now.

    GO!

5 out of 5 stars You have to be in the right mindset.......2004-02-04

I'm a music freak, I listen to so much. All genres, everything. I know a lot about music and you're going to take my word for this because itd take too long to give examples of why you should believe me. THIS, is not intelligent music in any sense. But it is still amazing. You want good electroclash, go get ladytron-604. You want something that is going to keep you laughing your ass off whenever you're in that giddy mood or even when you need to be cheered up? Get this. The lyrics are extremely raunchy...but its nothing you probably havent heard before.

Get this cd...you can prolly scrap up enough money to buy it in chunk change alone just lying hidden in the sofa.

    have fun-

5 out of 5 stars A whole lotta wonderful Americana!.......2006-10-28

A while ago, I ordered this Bobby Charles album from the Amazon website and was delighted from the first listening.

This 2-CD set includes no less than THIRTY-FOUR tracks and comes in a nice cardboard sleeve. The booklet includes, for each track, complete credits regarding recording studios, engineers, producers and individual musicians. The recording dates, however, are only indicated for the tracks on the first CD 1 ; why?

The sequencing is not chronological and the material on both CD's criss-crosses the years randomly, stretching from 1975 to 2001! This could have spelled disaster but it actually works very well. It is remarkable that the song quality, the vocal delivery, the overall production and the general level of musicianship are so consistently first rate from beginning to end. The listener never gets the impression that the tracks were recorded over such a long time span.

Bobby Charles wrote all tracks, except for the amazing remake of "Walkin to New Orleans" (co-written by Fats Domino, of course), which features a short but delightful vocal cameo by the Fat Man himself.

What this superb singer-songwriter offers here is roots Americana at its very best, a genuine cornucopia of American traditions filtered through a a personal vision of Crescent City Rhythm 'n' Blues.
All the material flows along satisfyingly enough, sung and performed with a relaxed confidence, a kind of musical bonhomie so laid back that it sometimes makes J. J. Cale sound positively restless in comparison! When I listen to this album, I pick one CD and play it in its entirety one, two or three times in a row. It is THAT good. So good indeed that I do not feel the need to list favourite tracks.

The lyrics have a suitably down home character while the musicianship is truly superb, quite often driven by the wonderful electric (slide) guitar from Sonny Landreth. But then again, there are so many fine musicians contributing that it is not possible to list them. I will mention some guest spots from, among others: Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Ben Keith, Dan Penn, Maria Muldaur, etc.

Now to a "statistical" aside: out of the 19 tracks included on CD 2, nine were previously released on the "Wish You Were Here Tonight" CD released in 1995 (the omitted tracks are: "Promises, Promises", "The Mardi-Gras Song" and "Peanut".) Another ten tracks were previously released on the "Secrets of The Heart" CD released in 1998 (the omitted tracks are: "You" and "Happy Birthday Fats Domino".)

Merci pour ce délice, Monsieur Guidry!

5 out of 5 stars The best from Lancashire.......2001-10-26

This album was the last one recorded. In my view it is not the best. The previous ones are far better. But nothing is like the real thing. If you ever saw them or spent time with them as I did, you would understand. Norm, Les, and George, put together a song in a dingy hotel room in London (in about 5 minutes)called 'Mrs.K.Linker' I still remember it to this day. It was never recorded but as you can imagine from the title, it was a bit dirty. Good fun though.
Could anyone tell me if Gravy Train are still together? I lost touch with them in 1974 when I left UK but now I have returned and would like to contact them or at least get to know where they are playing next.
Please email me with any news. dave@bfg-online.com

4 out of 5 stars Their most accomplished work.......2001-01-21

I live in the home town of this band and saw them live five times at the time of their album releases, and knew a couple of the members casually. By far the best concert was upon the release of this album which opened with a LOUD Starbright,Starlight as does the album. I go to concerts regularly and Gravy Train ranks up there as one of the best (without lasers and fancy lights). Staircase to the Day is a more polished and professional product than their earlier albums which could have and should have been taken further. They explore different styles, from the all out rockin' jam of "Busted in..", to more peaceful ballads (Ballad of a Peaceful Man being an earlier album) like Bring My Life On Back To Me. This track is not about a nuclear war but about the troubles in Northern Ireland and has a similar chord structure to the intro of Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd only with considerably more feeling. Norman Barrett holds everything together with his highly emotive guitar work and powerful vocals, and this, along with the keyboards which replaced the flute and sax of the other albums, makes Staircase.. a showpiece for one of rock's smaller gems.

3 out of 5 stars you find the darndest things in back alleys..........2000-06-20

Like many before me, I suspect, I stumbled on the existence of this band because the great artist Roger Dean drew one of their album covers and included it in his first compendium "Views." The rule of thumb has proven to be about 95% accurate so far--Dean cover=good music.

This album is by far the best thing that Gravy Train put out. Interesting instrumentation, strong lead vocals, lyrics that don't violate the Trite-O-Meter--all are made to serve the needs of the songs, which are well-conceived. This album has that early 70s British feel common to rock bands that were (at the time) reaching out for something new and were given the freedom by the record companies to see where the pursuit led. Compared to their earlier releases, Gravy Train was really over-acheiving on this album. Their previous recordings suffered from spotty musicianship (especially the wind instrument playing, which is unlistenable on those efforts!), and the songs did not really work. Staircase to the Day functions as a tribute to the synergistic power of the collective band mind when it all comes together, if only for a short time, in the studio. Don't bother with their other recordings, but don't let them scare you off of a real diamond in the rough. Listen to the heartfelt vocals and arrangement of "Bring My Life On Back To Me" (looking at the morning after nuclear armegeddon through the eyes of a child), and the rocking wah-guitar on the closing jam "Busted...", and experience that good feeling you get when you take a chance on a recording and are immediately rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars A much mellower second album.......2007-03-02

Gravy Train is never what you call the most progressive of bands out there, although they're often regarded as one of the finest acts on the Vertigo label. Their debut is a quite raw and aggressive breed of hard rock with psychedelic and prog rock soundling like Black Sabbath meets Jethro Tull. For progressive rock fans, many look to their 1971 followup, (A Ballad Of) A Peaceful Man, their last for Vertigo (they released two more albums on the Dawn label, Second Birth in 1973 and Staircase to the Day in 1974). Much of the hard rock elements of their debut had been toned down considerably in place of more atmospheric ballads dominated by strings, with symphonic overtones. J.D. Hughes still handles flute and sax, but he started including keyboards, like harpsichord and even a little Mellotron. Guitarist Norman Barratt, who also handles lead vocals is much more dominate than their debut, and I have to warn you his raspy vocals really are an acquired taste.

"Alone in Georgia" is the opening piece, a pop-oriented number with gospel and Southern rock overtones. This piece is really out of place compared to the rest of the album, it sounded like their misguided attempt at scoring a hit (it was released as a single), so it's a real shocker when the next piece comes next, the title track. It features some really stunning flute work and strings. "Jule's Delight" is another atmospheric ballad, while "Messenger" has a more symphonic feel complete with Mellotron. "Can Anybody Hear Me" and "Won't Talk About It" harkens back to the harder rock sound more typical of their debut. "Home Again" shows some psychedelic overtones, and a nice way to close the album.

Really, when it comes for early, Vertigo-era Gravy Train, it all comes to taste, hard rock fans are obviously advised to check out their debut, prog rock fans should go to (A Ballad Of) A Peaceful Man. Aside from "Alone in Georgia", it's truly a great album to have.

        1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2007-01-08

jesus christ this is BAD! none of their albums are good though...oh well at least they're consistent in their crappiness

2 out of 5 stars le tigre train?.......2005-07-23

this album is really pretty disappointing. the group has lost a chick, added a dude, and.... guitars. alot of guitar. so it's like, gravy train!!!! wanted to be more of a "band" or something. it sounds like knockoff le tigre with chanty punky sounding songs. no funny rap songs to be found here. and lead singer "chunx" seems to be singing WAY too much. homegirl aint got the best voice, and i wish she wouldve stuck with funny rapping with uber-homo "hunx". no fun "you made me gay" or "double decker supreme" here. which totally sucks cuz the other train!!!! album totally rules. it had a real diy, badly-recorded quality that made it feel way cult-y. this album sounds like it was produced to sound lo-fi on purpose. oh well. their live shows still rule.

        5 out of 5 stars loves it!.......2005-07-15
