5 out of 5 stars what a flashback!.......2007-07-15

I thought I was the only person on the planet that remembered Rodriquez - Cold Fact! I do a web search and lo and behold, there's a cult following for him. Strangely enough the cult following was in SA (where I heard him) and Australia. I heard him (and even remember the album cover) back in high school over 30 years ago and remembered the one track "I Wonder", yet I don't remember what I had for lunch! I went to school near Durban, SA and the album floated around at parties and such. His haunting music has stayed with me ever since, I will be buying Cold Fact now!

5 out of 5 stars AAAAAAH, The 70's.......2007-04-03

I must have bought 10 copies of this album when it first came out. I gave most of them to my friends, so many in fact that I don't own a copy myself. I was the music freek (nut!!) amongst my friends and since I thought that Bob Wills or Jimmy Reed would have been a bit much for them, I played Cold Fact. Since I couldn't be bothered bringing the album to their houses each weekend, I bought them copies and left them there. Every time we gathered for a Fri/Sat night out we would put on Rodriquez, toke up, have a few drinks, eat pistachio nuts and groove to "Sugar Man" et al. I have to admit I haven't heard this album for over 25 years but I can still sing the words to nearly every song!!!! I am amazed that this album had such a small audience; mainly in Australia and Sth Africa, as it is an iconic release. Australia had an extemely vibrant Pop music scene in the 70's thanks to Ian "Molly" Meldrum and his popular Countdown TV show. Along with Rodriguez, Countdown broke ABBA, which is a good or bad thing depending on one's perspective. If anyone out there, in a moment of madness, wants to find out what the average!! Aussie music buff was getting off on in the early 70's grab a copy of a Rodriguez album and see how off the planet we really were.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-12-22

Previous reviewers have said everything already! This album was recommended to me by Pandora on a Dylan radio station, suggesting I'd like this if I like Dylan... and sure they know their stuff!

5 out of 5 stars commentary in poetry.......2006-04-06

First released in 1970, this album is a commentary in the tradition of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan but with a style and vibe of it's very own.
Each song is something original and new in itself but running through it is a theme of drugs : "Dancing Rosemary, disappearing sister Ruth
It's just your yellow appetite
that has you choking on the truth
You gave in, you gave out, outlived your dream of youth "

social alienation : "Now you sit there thinking feeling insecure
The mocking court jester claims there is no proven cure
Go back to your chamber, your eyes upon the wall
'Cos you got no one to listen, you got no one to call"

, cynicism and angry condemmnation of the corrupt materialism of the wealthy : "And don't try to enchant me with your manner of dress
'Cos a monkey in silk is a monkey no less
So measure for measure reflect on my said "

And a focus on the plight of the poor: "The ladies on my street
Aren't there for their health
Welfare checks don't pave
The road to much wealth. "

Rodriguez never was a star in the USA but had a massive following in South Africa, Zimbabwe , Australia and New Zealand.

My personal favourites are: "CRUCIFY YOUR MIND " , "I WONDER" "LIKE JANIS" and "JANE S. PIDDY".

If you enjoy the genius Leonard Cohen you will want to sample Rodriguez.

5 out of 5 stars Discovered Rodriguez in Mozambique.......2006-01-28

I was in the Peace Corps in Malawi in the mid-90s, was hitching through Mozambique with a couple of other volunteers in the spring of '95, just after the war. The only other "mzungus" we saw the whole time there was this South African couple we met in a restuarant in Nampula who invited us to stay at their house on the beach. They were working there to rebuild the roads and put on this album while we were hanging out that night. It floored me immediately.

I asked who it was and the guy looked at me oddly and said "Rodriguez, he's AMERICAN" as if he thought I was a nutter for never having heard of the guy. And he was right. The next time I was in SA for holiday I snapped it right up.

Listening to it right now. If he tours here I would go in a heart beat. His songs definitely have a Dylan quality to them as many have mentioned, but his voice reminds me a Jim Croche. You won't regret buying this album.

I am now a SAHM, living in the 'burbs, my 1.5 year son is playing with the CD cover right now. My how times change, but when I put on this album I am a wandering 20something, saving the world and hitchhiking through southern africa, where ever the ride takes us. I am RIGHT THERE.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Tonic Sol-Fa.......2007-07-31

If you have never heard this group sing (either on albums or live) then this is the perfect starter piece for your collection. Great tracks from a highly talented group. Catch a show if you can but get this album either way. Definately check out Chances, El Paso,Until Forevers Gone and Long Black Train.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2007-06-22

I won this cd at a Christmas show that Tonic Sol-Fa had in my hometown. I would have to say that my favorite songs are Brown Eyed Girl (they do such an amazing job on this remake, it sounds like the original but with their melodies it's awesome!!) 29 Ways To My Baby's Door (their vocals together are perfect and i love the beat) and Sold. I find myself singing along to that in my car just smiling and laughing the whole time. The beat is a lot of fun and the way they can make their voices sound like that blows me away. I would definitely recommend this album. It even has Scooby Doo...I mean who doesn't love Scooby Doo? I'm sure kids would love it!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-02-23

I saw them live on their Christmas tour, I am now a devoted fan. No instruments, and never should be. They have a style all their own and show it! Must have CD and get all their CD's while your at it!

Studio musicians perform a delicate high-wire act. They're required to play a wide variety of styles and deliver their own musical voice at a moment's notice. For three decades, the Dallas-born, tenor/soprano saxophonist and flutist Cornelius Bumpus has performed that high-wire act with ease. Though not as well-known as David Sanborn and Michael Brecker, Bumpus has laid down some silk-degreed sax lines for Boz Scaggs, Jeff Lorber, and the Doobie Brothers, and on many Steely Dan recordings, including Two Against Nature. On Known Fact, Bumpus spotlights his sparkling and soulful sound, which encompasses the dance bounce of Junior Walker and the fluent jazz phrasings of Joe Henderson. Musical genres are no obstacle to Bumpus. Joined by a combo featuring keyboardist Rob Aries and bassist Paul Adamy, Bumpus brings out the Baptist church on the Staple Singers' hit "I'll Take You There" and on their "Stand Up and Be Counted." He shouts the blues on the Steely Dan ditty from the '70s, "Chained Lightning," and rocks out on the Doobie Brothers' "Takin' It to the Streets." Bumpus's shimmering flute sound swells on the samba track "Abundare," and his romantic side comes through on the title track. The R&B tune "Drown in My Own Tears" features his own down-home vocal, showing another side of this multitalented musician. --Eugene Holley Jr.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very pleasant smooth-jazz CD from the late Cornelius Bumpus.......2005-12-29

It was a shock to learn that Cornelius Bumpus had died last year; he died at age 58 from a massive heart attack while on an airplane flight. Bumpus is certainly most well-remembered for playing with the Doobie Brothers--he joined the Doobies in the late '70s and appeared on their 1980 album "One Step Closer", writing and singing lead on the classic "Thank You Love". Bumpus also played live with the reunited Doobies, as well as the reunited Steely Dan, in the mid-'90s. Bumpus released one solo album in 1981 called "A Clear View", and then an album credited to the Cornelius Bumpus Quartet in 1983 called "Beacon".

"Known Fact" is his final album of his lifetime. It was recorded in 1999, and reportedly was released in February of 2000. It's extremely mellow, definitely in a smooth-jazz/ 'elevator music' style. And an extremely pleasant album it is, very tastefully played and produced, with a winning 'late-night' atmosphere to it.

There are background vocal chants of the respective titles on "Takin' It To the Streets" and "I'll Take You There", and Bumpus displays his excellent, soulful vocals on the album closer "Drown In My Own Tears".

Apart from those few tracks, the disc is entirely instrumental. "Dig You" and the Bumpus-penned "Jupiter Spin" are splendid, arrestingly contemplative tracks. Bumpus mixes things effectively, switching from saxophone to flute on the upbeat, samba-styled "Abundare". It's fair to say that he's coasting with his covers of the Doobies' "Takin' It To the Streets" and the Staple Singers "I'll Take You There", but even though they're hardly revealatory, they do come off nicely. He tries to funk things up on "Stand Up And Be Counted", and it's the one track on the album that strikes me as sounding forced.

Overall though, the album finds an engaging mellow groove and sticks with it, making for an extremely pleasant listen. When the right mood hits, this is a disc you can basically play straight through and not feel compelled to skip and of the tracks. It's a fine swan-song from the talented Cornelius Bumpus.

Best Known in other countries than the US (a shame), Keziah Jones is an amazing artist , and Blufunk Is a Fact is his best album, so far. I first heard (and see) one song , don't remember which one, in MTV Latin America (back in Peru ,the 90's) , of course the guitars and the rythm capture me. Now on 2006 , I've rediscovered the art of Keziah. One friend told me Bluefunk is A Fact was the best album of the 90's, you know what , he's right.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!!.......2003-10-31

Keziah Jones is one of the best guitarist alive..
You can compare him to a more technical version of Ben Harper or Jack Johnson.. Adding up more musical influances such as jazz, funk, rock, african music ..
        Very ethnical..
Amazing, is first CD is great and also is best CD yet..

        5 out of 5 stars Incredibly funky........2000-09-30

I bought this CD several years ago while I was living in Japan. I was desperate for some new music, but the tiny record store in the town where I was living had very little to offer (I've never cared much for Japanese pop). I chose this more because of the cover art than anything else. When I got home and popped it into my stereo I was absolutely floored by what I heard. It's absolutely criminal that this amazing artist is virtually unknown in the US. If you have any interest at all in hearing catchy, funky tunes from a consummate guitarist-singer, do not pass up any chance you may get to acquire this great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Funky music with deep, intelligent lyrics.......2000-03-09

Good lord! Why is it that music like the Backstreet Boys selling a ba-gillion copies and yet no one knows anything about talents like Keziah Jones? This album is, plain and simply, AMAZING. Funky bass lines, horns and chunky guitars invite inevitable comparisons to Lenny Kravitz, but to stop at that would be to pass Keziah Jones of as a copy and never uncover him as an amazing artist in his own right. The songs not only musically are amazing and full of soul, but the lyrics are deep and pertain to real subjects like race and love without being in the slighest "make me want to vomit" cheesy or "stop lecturing me" preachy. When singing about love and (more appropriately) making love, this Brit's lyrics are sensual and deep. When singing about race, the lyrics make you take notice without reprimanding you. Just listen to "Rhythm is Love," "The Wisdom Behind the Smile (Cash)" or "The Funderlying Undermentals" and you'll understand why I can't stop talking (writing) about ths album (his best).

5 out of 5 stars A versatile performer and composer. A great album........2005-10-14

Gene Pistilli has been around for a very long time because he has what it takes to survive in the music industry. He simply is a talented musician, performer and composer. Add a great voice and the ability to play various styles of music, and you have Gene Pistilli. Pistilli has written music for Spanky and Our Gang (Sunday Will Never Be the Same), Bette Midler, and country singer Randy Travis. He was an founding member of Manhattan Transfer, and he has worked with many other well-known performers, such as Jim Croce. With "I Still Get Dressed on Sundays", Pistili shows what a great performer he is with his exceptional voice and songwriting. If you like country and country swing, just buy this album. It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Modern western swing with a wink and a smile.......2003-09-19

An amiable set of western swing oldies and fine new originals, written by one of the founding members of the retro-jazz vocals ensemble, Manhattan Transfer. (No -- I'm not kidding!) Pistilli, who's nicknamed himself "The Hoboken Saddletramp," has a real feel for the music, which isn't too surprising -- he's moving from one style of retro swing to another -- and has written several swell new tunes (the title track in particular). There's a certain reserve to this album that makes it less than overpowering, but it's still pretty nice -- fans of The Hot Club Of Cowtown will wanna check this out as well.

        5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2003-06-18

Excellent. As good as anything by popular artists, blending Irish music with a popular beat. Well worth the purchase

        4 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2002-03-14

Once again these guys have pulled it off again! I didnt think
that the "Other Side" could be topped! The cover soundtrack
"Ratty Shoes" starts off with newcomer Michael Boyce singing
lead vocals and will bring your heart right back to Ireland. From Paul Moore's "Jig Junk" to the insanely talented John McGroary ( and I truely meant that) on button acordian with "Clearmountain Aire" gets your feet in steppin gear! But you
have to see these guys "live", unbelievable energy is put out
for every show. Whether these guys are jumping and kicking to every tune their drummer Mike O'Callahan is beating his heart
out with those ever so RED sneakers! But this is truely heart at
work with lyrics by Blackthorn! Great work guys! Buy this CD and
listen to great lyrics performed by a band that has proven
        themselves once again!

5 out of 5 stars This album is a complete package.......2002-02-05

When I first saw Blackthorn, it was in their natural habitit, on stage. A great, jumping pub act, I was promptly hooked on these Philadelphia Irish rockers. Their first album, The Other Side, was very good, but lacked the polish of a major recording artist. The followup, Ratty Shoes, suffers from none of the occassional awkwardness of that first record. The production is first rate and the songs are up to the increased scrutiny. From the bouncy pub stompers like the title track, to the traditional button-accordian instrumentals, to the reflective ballads like "The Border", this album is a complete package that truly defines Blackthorn as a band ready to break into the mainstream. The balance between rock and roll and traditional Irish folk sounds is just right, with neither overwhelming the other. Tying it all together is Paul Moore's passionate, homespun vocals. Black 47 and The Saw Doctors need to make room, because Blackthorn have just joined them on the top step of the Irish Rock genre.

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID IT AGAIN!!.......2002-01-14

WHAT A WONDERFUL MIX OF MUSIC FROM THE BOYS OF BLACKTHORN! I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THEIR LAST, ORIGINAL CD, "THE OTHER SIDE" AND WONDERED IF THEY COULD TOP IT.........AND THIS COLLECTION IS EQUAL TO THE TASK! FROM THE FUN-FILLED "JIG JUNK" TO THE HEART-FELT LYRICS OF "THE BORDER" , THESE LADS ARE TRULY, ORIGINAL!

5 out of 5 stars Blackthorn does it again ..........2001-12-27

The lads from Philly & Ireland have done it again. Although I have long been waiting for the new release, I was apprehensive that they wouldn't be able to top their spectacular original debut, The Other Side. But the boys have proven me wrong - quite simply, this album is fantastic.

From Moore's magical storytelling, to the Boyce Brothers' pop/country tunes, McGroary's reels, Seamus Kelleher's' electrifying guitar work and Mike O'Callaghan keeping the beat (and writing a new tune), this record does not have a single weak spot on it. Personally, I have always been a huge fan of Paul Moore's songwriting, but there are no slouches in this band.

Very highly recommended for fans of Celtic music, pop music and/or country music. And if you can, catch the boys live - it's something to see.
