Album Description
Sydney's Decoder Ring deliver their third release in the form of a soundtrack. The band was invited by writer/director Cate Shortland to compose the soundtrack for the Australian film Somersault, which earned the much-coveted 'Official Selection' and received a standing ovation when it screened at Cannes. Working the film score into a complete album, Decoder Ring have created a release that works both as companion to the film & as a stand-alone album. The visual elements and the languid pacing of Somersault marry beautifully with the luscious sounds of Decoder Ring and the result is wonderfully moving, honest and dreamy. Mana Music. 2005.

somersault review.......2006-08-31
I absolutely love this cd. It has all chill out music, and I love to just fall asleep listening to it. BUY IT! The movie is really good too.
A Crafted Soundtrack.......2005-05-05
Quite simply, a beautiful crafted Soundtrack that suits the Film 100%. Highly recommended & I expect more beautiful atmospheric music from Decoder Ring soon I hope.
Gorgeous!!!!.......2005-04-22
This ablum is sweetly and hauntingly beautiful. Saw the movie, loved it, and realised when I was watching it that the score was adding SO MUCH to the movie. Brought the soundtrack right away and was blown away as I am new to Decoder Ring. I have listened to this cd hundreds of times since then and cannot wait to get their upcoming new album. For lovers of Sigur Ros, Radiohead, this album is a must-have. I could even hear traces of Hans Zimmer in places. The music is delicate, evocative, moody, poignant and takes listener on emotional and reflective trip. Amazing stuff.

Bill Nelson's Deep Dream Decoder.......2003-04-15
Bill Nelson has got to be one of the most prolific musicians from the past 30 years. Not only was he the driving force behind the legendary Be Bop Deluxe, he has also recorded something close to 30 + solo albums to date! With these recordings he crosses many musical boundries: Rock, Jazz, Ambient, Techno, Dance, Trance, and Blues. He's quite an amazing guitar player too!
"Deep Dream Decoder" was actually part of a 1995 4 CD compilation (My Secret Studio Vol I) that's no longer available. In my opinion this is the best of the 4 discs with its intelligent lyrics and driving guitars. It's more in the Techno vein, but it's done very well, with melody. With all Bill has released over the years, this is probably my favorite disc of his material. Standout songs are "Golden Girl," "God Bless Me," "Dissolve," and "Rise". Great material!

Album Description
Decoder Ring's self-titled debut album, originally released in 2002, gained them a huge following while garnering the kind of praise in the Australian media that most bands can only dream of. Reviewers stretched their vocabularies and wrestled with superlatives as they tried to capture the sheer scope of their sound, comparing them to the likes of Royksopp, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Bjork, My Bloody Valentine, This Mortal Coil, and Air. Decoder Ring's songs are textural and atmospheric soundscapes, combining rich organic sounds and electronic meanderings in a musical journey that is as expansive as it is emotive. EMI. 2005.

Brilliant New Metal Band.......2006-09-12
Ebony Ark floored me from the first moment that I heard them. Beatriz Albert has the ability to sing as sweetly as almost anyone, yet can put in her voice a roughness reminiscent of Janis Joplin. Their guitarist and keyboardist both demonstrate a level of technical skill that is above the average, and a style that is powerful but not overwhelming. If only this band was big enough to come to America...I can only hope that they grow in the years to come.
Incidentally, they are from Madrid, not France.
Out Of This World!! Magnificient!!.......2006-01-15
Ebony Ark is trult an amazing power metal band.... From the opening songs to the closer.. This is one hell of a metal powered to the max with such an incredible female voice!!! Most of the other female fronting band is most average and good. But this!! Oh My... This is a power house female voice here!!! Unbelievable sounds, technicality, song composition and overall feel of DECODER!!! With this album in hand, the most recommended way of listening to this bombastic band is full blast ahead!!!! No holds barrell!!!!!
Amazing.......2005-11-25
This is a beautiful debut from a French band that is sure to rise in the future. If you are a fan of metal with female vocals, then you should for sure like this CD.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
This entirely original and strange record ultimately seduces with a quirky grace. Where does one begin to describe what's contained within Chrominance Decoder? A melange of '60s girl pop, Yé Yé, garage rock, Beach Boys harmonies, Gainsbourgian crooning, spy-movie soundtracks, cheezy jazz, Japanese "idoru" preening, trip-hop grooves, Lolitaesque come-ons, loungy dithers, and cartoon ditties--the genius behind this delicious concoction is Elinor ("April March isn't my Christian name," she coos), a California girl by way of New England who sings in both French and English with unconscious ease. Wow. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
Using faux French '60s lounge pop as the starting point for her sonic discourse, Elinor Blake, a.k.a. April March, displays plenty of musical savvy and the rare ability to come up with a good hook. As April March, she uses her kittenish voice in the style of Parisian chanteuses like Françoise Hardy. French producer Bertrand Burgalat lends a spare, sophisticated musicality to the record, arranging delicate layers of electronics and horns around March's slick studio ensemble. With heady instrumental interludes, fragile acoustic ballads, and Stereolab-style rock flourishes, March seems to be a substantial musical enterprise as well as an interesting alter ego for the talented Blake. A warning, though: she sings pure pop in French, and the whole vibe here is extremely precious. --Mitch Myers
Customer Reviews:
I LOVE THIS ALBUM.......2003-11-30
THE FIRST TIME I HEARD APRIL MARCH, I LIKED HER FROM THE START. SHE IS DIFFRENT FROM THE MUSIC YOU HEAR TODAY. ALSO THE INSTRUMENTALS ARE AMAZING. IF YOU LIKE TO HEAR SOMETHING DIFFRENT THAT IS NOT THE USUAL MUSIC YOU HEAR ON THE RADIO, THEN THIS IS THE ALBUM FOR YOU.
the anti britney--sweet & sophisticated pop.......2002-01-13
I have most of April March's albums and this is her most accomplished yet. The instrumental arrangements are heavenly.
I just wanted to write in since someone else had given this CD only one star.
pastel colored sound.......2001-09-14
April March( Elinor Blake) has made many of my nights and days zoom by with ease and satisfaction. Countless quarters have been popped into the juke box at my favorite pub listening to this record while sipping martinis and mixers. Elinor is the true incarnation of an enlightened Renaissance woman. She has been a part of many fabulous music projects other than April March such as The Sh*tbirds and April March and the Makers. She also paints and was an animatuer on the cult classic Ren & Stimpy Show. So it is no wonder that she was able to put together a record which such great diversity while retaining an overall mood that engulfs the listen to focus on every last sound. A combination that not many artists can pull off. The Songs range from fragile pop songs to catchy, flashy tunes, some even with trance like beats. Plus some are sung in French and others in English,an approach which I find truly delightful. I remember studying my French vocabulary words while this album was playing in the background and I swear it helped me pass a few tests. Any lover of music that desires to hear something new or any one that wishes to hear what pastel colors sound like must pick up this record. It is sure to bring a flutter to your heart.
If you are looking for a French Pop sound, look further..........2001-03-27
This record has some fine music. But the singing is artificially nasally and off-key most of the time. It's difficult to sing in a foreign language, and this singer just can't pull it off and drives the listener to distraction or irritation.
Paris of the Mind.......2000-10-29
I've tried to figure out what it is that draws me to the music of this petite chanteuse, and I think perhaps that it is the stirring of childhood memories: of a world ruled by reruns of ancient cartoons, of squirming in the back seat of the car, listening to the light pop vocal hits of the mid-60's. Only now, the songs are in French as well as English, and include two pieces reminiscent of the scratchy lilt of cartoon music. All of this comes together to engender a feeling of sly sentimentality that comforts my black soul, and leaves me dwelling in my own little Paris of the Mind. April March (A.K.A. Elinor Blake) lays on the spells with such songs as Charlatan and Garcon Glacon, which charm me with their - well, with their Frenchness, while her clear, soft, and intimate vocals set my hormones to trembling. The lush orchestration on Mignonette/No Parachute verges on a kind of transcendent distortion, as Herb Alpert-like horns hone in to keep the pace. Keep in Touch, one of many tracks written by producer Bertrand Burgalat, creates a sense of drifting around, alternately approaching and then retreating from the singer. The singsong approach of Mon Petit Ami makes me think of a chorus of fiercely loyal French school children belting out a personal anthem.
Her affection for the medium of animation comes through clearly in Garden of April, a happy, peppy composition that conjures up images of a chorus of singing flowers swaying in the sun, and Mon Petite Cowboy, a bouncy, fluffy instrumental retake of the Mon Petit Ami theme that inspires visuals of an animated cowboy riding the range on a lopsided horse. These two tracks bring to mind the manic musical explorations of Raymond Scott, the deeply strange and innovative composer who inadvertently scored the soundtrack to our childhood.
Peppered throughout are a few numbers with darker themes: Sugar, a song of lost innocence, Knee Socks, a metaphoric look at girls teetering on the edge of that loss, and Ideal Standard, a darkly humorous stab at a bad marriage gone comfortable.
If you're in need of that warm fuzzy sixties feeling without the attendant nausea of overplayed standards, if you have a childish sense of fun balanced with a finely honed sarcastic sensibility, go out and buy this recording. Let's support Elinor Blake in the style to which she should become accustomed.

Hidden gem.......2005-10-07
I got this CD during my Leeb-fascination days. I sampled a bit of everything by Leeb and thought Drill was pretty good so it lead me to this. I sold Drill shortly after buying this as I uncovered the true essence of NU. Every track on this disc is pure, hope you like it as much as I.
Decoder ~ Noise Unit.......2005-05-05
Decoder being the 1996 release from Noise Unitis a very well produced instrumental album that can be said to have borrowed from a plethora of genres. Leeb borrows some from trance, a bit from techno, ebm, techno and electro music. The end result could end in becoming just utter chaos but it is not. This is an extremly well produced album and one can definetly hear that they hand picked the sounds. I love the sphere on the cover and the text is cool, but the book-let has nothing but a discography and that stinks. Even so this is a very nice album and I love to listen to it.
Great album all the way through........2003-07-22
I listen to this album constantly while in my 'workshop'. It's driving. Also has a good many layers and mood shifts throughout as well as some interesting thematic 'vocals'. Bill Leeb does it again and again, and if you are a Delerium fan but need something a little more peppy, you might want to check this one out.
Starts off GREAT, peters out in the end.......2002-09-28
Definitely more like Delerium's "Karma" (also Lieb's work). The first several tracks entrance you without need for vocals. The end kinda loses steam....You will find several of the tracks reminiscent to "Twilight" (from "Karma") in style....A worthwhile purchase.
amazing instrumental cd.......2001-11-04
At first I was reluctant towards this cd. I had listened to some of their previous material, which was quite in the vein of early FLA, and so when i knew that the later Noise Unit's works, that is 'Decoder' and 'Drill' were completely instrumental and more techno-oriented, I thought I'd never give them even a listening. When I first listened to Drill's 'Dominator' I thought, well, it's not that bad, but I didn't pay more attention to this side-project for some months.
Now that I own 'Decoder' I must recognise it is a masterpiece in its genre. It is a bunch of instrumental songs, varied enough not to bore me, similar enough to maintain a conceptual unity. Is this techno? well, it is. But Leeb style. If you know Leeb music (Front Line Assembly, Delerium...) you know that he explores in many diverse ways (metal, techno...) without losing his personal style. 'Decoder' is not an exception. Here you can listen to songs which are danceable, stmes minimalistic, stmes grandiose, stmes drum'n bass, stmes more EBM... but all with Leeb's unique style.
'Decoder' has no guitars, unlike 'Drill'. Which is best? I think both are great, stmes I prefer to listen to one, other times to the other.
Some of the best songs in 'Decoder'? At first 'Escape' was my favourite. It is a very good danceable piece, with a catchy melody that repeats throughout all the song. But my real fav here is 'Ascent', a very etherreal piece, somewhat reminiscent of Delerium, completely addictive and catchy. The rest are not much worse, all 9 songs here are pure joy for the senses.
It's a pity 'decoder' is out of stock. It's, in my opinion, a lesson of how techno can be interesting, not only fun, and how an instrumental cd can be listened to from the beginning to the end without a stop. Of course you can dance till you exhaust with this work, but the most interesting thing is that you can actually LISTEN TO it, and enjoy it as well.

With 'Fractions' Decoder Ring have raised the bar and push the boundaries like never before. Thanks to the voice of Lenka adding vocals to five tracks and a special collaboration with Ollie Browneof Art Of Fighting, the album is more overtly personal that Decoder Ring's previous excursions yet remains epic, universal and affecting through their powerful compositions that tap like a mainline into your soul. Having arrived at this review, the challenge is to convince you (the discerning shopper) to purchase an album by an Aussie group few have come across. At import prices, no less. I will use the comparison engine approach:
This is the best album I have heard since `Beaucoup Fish' by Underworld. Best album prior to that? The Daniel Lanois-produced `Wrecking Ball' by Emmylou Harris. If I were 16 (again) this album would adjust my listening habits as dramatically as New Order's `Substance' did in 1987.
This is `Kid A' if Thom Yorke were not so desperate to further distance his band from `Creep'. This is My Bloody Valentine's `Loveless' for the new millennia. Like `Dark Side of the Moon', it leverages technology to complement musicianship, creating sonics that will not age.
To sum up, I listen to hundreds of albums to find one this good. Oh, and this is my first album review ever submitted. I am that compelled.
Understand that the first eight tracks, phenomenal in their own right, are but harbingers of the final three. If just one person of influence could get an MP3 of one of these key tracks to the right [DJ|producer|artist] the album would break state-side. Alas, I am but a Yankee down under, wishing I knew people that knew people that . . .
Visit the band web site (decoderring.com.au).
An eclectic surprise!.......2005-11-23
I read a single review of this album and thought it'd be worth a listen. Ten minutes at the listening station at my local HMV store confirmed the hunch: this would be one of the better CD purchases I've made in the last few years.
My favourite piece would be the title track, "Fractions", which builds to a crescendo while remaining atmospheric (in a pop-beaty way) through to the end. It's a fitting finale to a collection that manages to remind me of several other moody-yet-bright-sounding groups (Goldfrapp comes to mind somehow) whom I've taken to recently. Musically it's rich and pleasant, with grace and power coming through from about track three onwards (sorry, but track one didn't grab me - its seems to wear its rock ambitions a tad too traditionally. The others, however, had me hooked straight up).
Recommended.
