The tracks of The Selector are not all that good. "Too much pressure" is OK, but the rest are indicative of a band that never jelled as a group.

But the second half of the disk...
This was the Specials at the very top of their game. A tight group that was still having fun onstage. This is a glimpse into one of the briefest windows of musical excellence; a year earlier, they were a bit sloppy. Shortly after this recording they began drifting apart. Terry sings "Concrete Jungle" here, making one wonder why he didn't on the LP. And "Long shot kick de bucket"/"Skinhead Moonstomp" is one of my fovorite moments in music; much better here than the 12" B-side version.

Excellent album featuring all the alltime classics. If you are into 60's ska this album is a must.

I love this CD! It has a great energy to it that some of their other live performances lack. Plus they add some funky new ideas that really enhances old favorites such as "For Richard" I thought Pye's guitar work was crisp and clear and his dueling solos with David Sinclair were excellent. Hats off to Geoff Richardson violin work! I have yet to tire of listening to this one!

One of the wonderful B.B.C. in concert series released from the dusty vaults of the Government run British Broadcasting Corporation. The band are introduced by D.J. Pete Drummond sounding very serious whilst extolling the virtues of these fine musicians, you must remember that this was March of 1975 when progressive rock was in its hey day all trying to look deadly serious whilst wearing kaftans, beads, & 30 inch bell bottom hipsters, no wonder twelve months later Johnny Rotten & Punk rock come along to breath some fresh life & fun back into Rock ýný Roll.
But does the music of Caravan stand the test of time after 26 years, surprisingly, yes very well indeed.
Back in the late sixties ýThe Wilde Flowersý the senior rock band of Kent, garden county of England, split in two, spawning ýCaravaný & ýSoft Machineý. Caravan helped create a musical style that has become known as the Canterbury sound, a name that has stuck to this sub genre of progressive rock ever since. Surrealist lyrics, humour, & a rock style that incorporated elements of Procul Harum, Jethro Tull & Pink Floyd, The Canterbury sound was a jazzy ý classical ý folk ý ish sound that was still very unique.
Caravan were definetly one of the founding progressive rock bands. Having already recorded seven albums by the time they went into record this concert at the London Paris Theatre.
By then, the 3 original members of David Sinclair, Pye Hastings, & Richard Couglan, had added Geoff Richardson on violin and replaced David Sinclairýs cousin, Richard Sinclair with Mike Wedgewood on bass, who came in from ýCurved Airý.
There are only 4 songs on this hour long concert, 3 of them clocking in just under the 20 minute mark before the final rave up, of the short & sweet audience fave rave, ýHoedowný from Caravanýs fifth album ýFor girls who grow plump in the nightý, the original album sleeve, depicting a naked pregnant women, was vetoed by record label Decca, but a compromise was reached & the women appeared wearing a night dress. Ho ý Hum such are the politics of mid seventies rock. ýFor Richardý comes from Caravanýs 2nd album ýIf I could do it again Iýd do it all over youý which appeared way back in September of 1970. Regarded by many fans as their best work it became a perennial favorite in the live set.
As you can see there were some marvelous titles from Caravans history none better than the trickly titled ýCunning Stuntsý from which the other two musical pieces on this album come from.
This album is a fine showcase for the rich musical talents of a band whose unique contribution to pop music history is unlikely to be forgotten.

This is one of the best live compilations of the late 80's Steve Earle & The Dukes incarnation. The atmosphere is great and, apart from the usual suspects, the cover versions of the Stones "Dead Flowers" and old Irish (& Waterboys) song "When will we be married" are both riveting - the latter, one of the best covers of this song you will ever hear. Steve and the Band were on good form when this was recorded. Campaign for its re-release now!

Best understood as the British answer to Alice Cooper. SAHB shares a lot in common with those guys from Detroit -- showmanship, a flamboyant lead singer, Tin Pan Alley influences, and, best of all, a nice, uncomplicated reliance on heavy riffs to power the sound. This and Live (taken from a 1975 show) has good versions of all their best songs -- "Faith Healer", "Framed", "Vambo", "Tomahawk Kid", "Temptation of St. Antony"-- and taken together is all you really need.

    First of all I like to start by pointing this out,It's the last four songs where Schenker & Chapman share the lead not the first 4 like it was mentioned on 1 review,this is the best way I can put it If you are a Schenker fan you'll like the 4 songs mostly,If you're a Chapman fan you'll like the whole disc even if he cuts LIGHTS OUT in half,there's no second solo,the first 8 songs are from NO PLACE TO RUN tour 1980 and the other 4 are from 1974,I feel I should mention this for any UFO fan there's a CD called ( The archives Series BBC UFO In Session and Live in concert) these are recorded versions that were replaced by the ones that were on the albums and these ones were never released these are the songs in order all Schenker with UFO

    First four tracks here come from a 1974 concert,where the superb twin guitar sound of Michael Schenker and Paul Chapman more than sizzles.The rest of the disc was pulled from a later gig.This is one band I've never gotten to see play live.Maybe there's still hope.Heard they still tour with three(is it?)original/classic line-up members.A fan can't ask for too much more than that.Cuts that make this CD a true keeper are "No Place To Run","Only You Can Rock Me","Lights Out",the ass-kicking "Rock Bottom","Doctor Doctor" and "Shoot Shoot".A good classic hard rock title to have.

    I heard this version of Doctor Doctor and it just blew me away. The last four tracks with Schenker are the best. A great change of pace to Strangers in the Night. If you buy it I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

    The information on the cd sleeve is not entirely correct. The 4 cuts on the cd with Michael Schenker have a very special touch to them. Listen carefully and you will hear a second guitar. For a very short time, Paul Chapman played co-lead guitar for UFO in 1974. It did not work out between Paul and Michael but they sounded great together. This is the only commerical avaiable recording of the two together. They never did any studio work together. The cd is an outstanding example of why UFO has always been a great live act. Enjoy!

          In preparing for a recent long drive in my car, I began assembling some cd's that I hadn't listened to in a while. This was one of them.
          It remained untouched until the return trip, and when it finally made it into the cd player, it remained for the rest of the trip and is still there three days later.
          What a marvelous representation of what must have been a terific show. From the first song, "Wait" (Wait 'til We Get Home - from the first album), to the last, a rendition of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane", this is a raucous, thoughtful, sweet, and uplifting concert. My only wish is that I had actually been there.
          Great stuff and perfect for a road trip!!
