Poorly conceived compilation..............2006-11-03
After the 2006 relaunch of Heartbeat's collaboration with Studio One which has produced some excellent compilations (Best of Vols' 1-3) and re-releases (Freddie McGregor) the wheels sadly come off with this one. It basically consists of a subjective selection of the "best" tracks from Heartbeat-Studio One's early 90's issues of classics S.1 albums. However the mix of styles, despite being organised chronologically, from rocksteady (Slim Smith, Termites, Cables) to early reggae (Larry Marshall) to roots (Viceroys) to early dancehall (Willie Williams) is jarring and does not gel together well. Also it must be said that neither the Termites nor the Cables are really all that good sounding rather twee almost 40 years on. The Viceroys and Williams tracks are largely great but that's less than half of the CD and Slim Smith's stuff is easily available elsewhere and anybody contemplating buying this CD will probably already have these tracks. This leads to my final comment, that the earlier 2006 Heartbeat-S.1 CD issues all had excellent bonus (and previously unavailable) tracks, not this one it's just an abbreviated reissue of previously available tracks and so is of limited interest of the vast majority of buyers who might consider purchasing this album who let's face it are most likely to be pretty keen reggae fans.

If you're going to get an ST album get Prime Cuts or How Will I Laugh Tomorrow though.

Product Description
Snatches of imagination, dreams and ethereal quarkiness are captured in this collection of songs and solo guitar works. Sparse production is all that is needed because of the "Dazzeling guitar work"...(Boston Globe) careful and conscise poetic lyrics presented with a rich baritone.

One of Folk's Best Kept Secrets.......2006-06-10
I first came across Raymond Gonzalez when I purchased the Christine Lavin compilation 'When October Goes' which features tracks by a number of today's most talented singer - songwriters.
If you are unfamiliar with Raymond's music,it's quite difficult to draw comparisons as his sound is so unique.
However, artists such as David Wilcox, David Buskin, Patty Larkin (on earlier recordings,'Strangers World' or 'Angels Running') and Cheryl Wheeler all come to mind. Smooth vocals, gentle melodies, insightful lyrics and great guitar playing are what make this cd so special.
Highlights include 'I Think I'll Go', 'Cloudless Summer Evening' and the title track, 'Moonlight and Sage'.
I cannot recommend this album enough. In addition to the 3 other cds by Raymond available on Amazon, it's worth trying to track down a copy of his early '90s recording with Amy Malkoff 'On The Water' which is excellent.
