In the late 1970s, Iron Maiden emerged as prime movers of the new wave of British heavy metal and unleashed a ferocious pack of hit singles and million-selling albums. Their recipe was simple: lyrics inspired by mythology and classic gothic literature backed by a soaring twin-guitar assault driven on by Steve Harris's relentless bass. It was an approach that influenced countless rock bands, from Metallica to a string of Scandinavian death merchants. The group's longest-standing vocalist, Bruce Dickinson, dominates this collection; only two tracks are sung by his replacement, Blaze Bayley. But it's unfortunate that no room was reserved for original singer Paul Di'Anno, denying fans the rough and punky "Runnin' Free" and "Sanctuary." There is, however, room for a live version of "Fear of the Dark" from the band's massive 2001 Rock in Rio show, included perhaps to maintain consistent production values. Even so, the early hits are sorely missed. --Dominic Wills

There already are (more than) enough Maiden compilations out there... take the hint........2007-07-16
I can't believe someone would rant about people giving this compilations bad reviews.
There were 2 Maiden compilations before: Best of the Beast, The Essential Iron Maiden, and now "Edward the Great: Greatest Hits". This one should have been called "Edward the Lame: Non-Greatest Hits."
I'll go over the pros and cons:
PROS:
-A Career-spanning single disc package that spans much of their career
-Has "Run To The Hills" and "The Trooper", 2 of their most prominent tracks
-Affordable price
-Should be found anywhere
CONS:
-The Sound remastering is Horrible
-VERY BAD TRACKLISTING! Where the hell is my all-time favorite, "No More Lies"? What about: Montsegeur, Face in the Sand, Dance of Death, The Mercenary, Dream of Mirrors, Blood Brothers, Ghost of the Navigator, Out of the Silent Planet, Lord of the Flies (considering Bayley sucks), Wrathchild, Purgatory, Charlotte the Harlot, Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden, Aces High, Losfer Words (Big 'Orra), Flash of the Blade, The Duellists, Back in the Village, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, or Hallowed Be Thy Name? They just chose the most overhyped songs for this collection.
-This cannot be a "Greatest Hits" compilation if it has "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter", "Man on the Edge" or "Futureal" on it! God!
-NO D'ANNIO STUFF! Yeah I know he sucked compared to Bruce Dickinson, but he's still better than Blaze Bayley
-"Fear of the Dark" is only the live version! WHY GOD WHY???"
This compilation is only for those unfamilliar with Iron Maiden, let alone Those who have just heard or are just getting into Iron maiden. I would reccomend buying this only if you haven't heard them.
I Love Iron Maiden.......2007-03-25
I may go to an all clasical school, and only play clasical insruments, but hell, you've got to love Iron Maidens music. On this album, my favourite song is Wasted Years. Bruce Dickinson all the way people!

Iron Metal.......2005-10-04
I never thought i would be interested in this sort of music but Iron Maiden is so much better than most metal bands. Their guitarest is so great and probably one of the best of all time. Each song has a sort of premise or idea that inspires it. I would have to say this is one of the most talented bands ever. I bought the album because i was trying new things. At first, the album kind of sat around. But when i finally put it in my stereo, i fell deeply. I couldn't stop listening to Flight of Icarus and 2 Minutes to Midnight. Once i was burnt out on those songs i started listening to the rest of the album and i loved the songs. Iron Maiden is currently my favorite band and i will soon get more of their CDs.
AWSOME.......2005-08-18
ALL I GOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS BEST OF IRON MAIDEN CD IS THAT ITS F**KING GREAT. MY ONLY COMPLAINT ON THIS ALBUM IS THAT TWO OF MY FAVORITE IRON MAIDEN SONGS AREN'T ON HERE. THOSE SONGS ARE "ACES HIGH" AND "HALLOWED BE THY NAME." BUT ALL IN ALL ITS GREAT
Good metal.......2005-08-06
I never thought i would be the type to like iron maiden but this is good! Not great, but good.
Certain songs were not very good but none were bad.
Best 2 tracks: Run to the Hills & Fear of the Dark (live)

Great Album, missing some good tracks though..........2004-01-09
Alright, first off, this is an awesome album. The one track it is definatly missing is The Clansman, and It would have been better with Aces high. Otherwise, awesome.
Great!!.......2003-02-04
This is a great album. Perfect for someone just getting into Iron Maiden, or to add to an already large collection. The Rock in Rio 'Fear of the Dark' is a great touch. Deffinately worth getting.

Customer Reviews:
Great music, mediocre compilation.......2004-12-13
Edward The Great (2002.) Iron Maiden's third hits compilation.
Iron Maiden. In the eighties, these guys absolutely owned the heavy metal scene of the day. They were wildly popular, moreso in their native United Kingdom than in the United States, but they won audiences over all the world nonetheless. The band released two hits compilations in earlier years, and released a third, Edward The Great, in 2002. Is it better or worse than its predecessors? Read on to find out.
PROS:
-MOST OF IRON MAIDEN'S BIG DICKINSON-ERA HITS ARE HERE. Run To The Hills, The Number Of The Beast, Flight Of Icarus, The Trooper, Wasted Years, and Can I Play With Madness are among the big hits this compilation gives you.
-UNDERRATED STUFF WAS ALSO INCLUDED. The Blaze Bayley years were Iron Maiden's dark ages, and yet, the person who compiled this compilation managed to pick two of the BEST Maiden songs from that era! Incredible, but true.
-AFFORDABLE! This CD is very cheap in most music retailers for what it gives you - plenty of Iron Maiden classics.
CONS:
-FOR THE MOST PART, THE TRACKLIST IS HORRENDOUS. FOUR TRACKS from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (half of that entire album) and ONLY ONE from Powerslave!? That's a f***ing joke! No Aces High means no five-star rating. If I wanted that many tracks from Seventh Son, I'D BUY THE ALBUM! The early nineties selections are also questionable. From No Prayer For The Dying, why pick Holy Smoke or Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter over the infinitely better Run Silent Run Deep? AND WHY ARE THERE NO TRACKS FROM THE PAUL DI'ANNO ERA!? Unforgivable.
-IRON MAIDEN IS NOT A GREATEST HITS BAND. No matter how hard you try, you will never be able to make eighty minutes fully represent the band. And whoever put this together wasn't trying too hard.
OVERALL:
I can't stress this enough - GET THE ALBUMS INSTEAD. Start with The Number Of The Beast and work your way forward - DO NOT start with a hits compilation, because you'll be missing out on several masterpieces. Albums are a much better bet in the long run.
Edward the Great.......2003-08-30
This album is actually the latest Iron Maiden's greatest hits album "Edward the Great".
According to the Amazon's list, this CD doesn't have any special features like a bonus track or something, it's just costs alot of money because it's an import - so you better buy the original "Edward the Great" album, which costs much less ( 15 US Dollars compare to 37 US Dollars).
The album is great & you should have it, personally, i think that "Best of the Beast" is better (but i own them both ;)).
