As original Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth quit the band to pursue a solo career, or was fired (depending on who you believe), Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony carried on by hiring Sammy Hagar. Hagar was a middling artist on his own, but he proved to be a powerhouse when placed in front of hard rock's most muscular and innovative instrumental unit. On 5150--the title is police code for "escaped lunatic"--you can hear the band's excitement at having struck a winning combination. Songs such as "Why Can't This Be Love," "Dreams," "Best of Both Worlds," and "Love Walks In" combine to make this the early high-watermark of the Van Hagar era. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars One of the best with Sammy.......2007-06-17

Brings back a lot of good memories... the songs from this album have energy and the sound is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars A great rockin' rush!!!.......2007-06-13

If you've never listened to this album before, buy it and skip to "Get up". Songs like this, based on Sammy Haggar's experience as a boxer, just aren't written anymore. A total energy blast, there isn't a single energy drink that can give a kick like this song. The other songs on this album deliver as well.

One aspect I've enjoyed about the Sammy Haggar invasion is that Van Halen's tunes don't seem to brood as much as they did with David Lee Roth. With Haggar, we get to hear more of Eddie Van Halen's talent in 5150 which previewed in "Jump" with Roth. More keys, more complex harmonies, more fast songs which in my estimation resulted in more music making make this album a great one.

5150 is probably Van Halen's greatest album ever. Though some may contest this, I can't help but constantly deem this valid when listening to the older and sadly less than exceptional following albums.

Great rock is just that, great. 5150 is great rock!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love It For The Cover Alone.......2007-05-24

I remember when Van Halen had David Lee Roth but even as a kid I just thought he was a circus clown. I love a lot of the early songs but when Hagar came in he brought substance. This was already a heavily talented group but to make that kind of transition at your peak and end up getting more well known for it!! That pretty much never happens. Musically they just took off on this album my only problem with it is it could of used a couple more songs to fill it up. Good times.

5 out of 5 stars All but "Inside"..........2007-05-13

I loved 1984. Loved it. I thought Van Halen had reached its peak, and then, poof! David Lee Roth was gone. When I heard that Sammy Hagar would replace DLR, I was skeptical, but figured I'd give it a chance.

What a good thing that I did!

Sammy greets the listeners for the first time with a hearty "Hellooooo baby!," and then the rocking starts. The mix of songs is fantastic, and all are perfectly placed on the album, save for the one throwaway song, "Inside." The new Van Halen showed all the elements of a solid rock band, from power to subtlety to just plain old good time fun music.

My personal favorite song is the title track, "5150." I have no idea why this still isn't recognized as one of their best efforts. Sammy's vocals are spot on, and really convey the angst of the song. Eddie, of course, weaves his magic as dramatically as ever.

To me, this is one of the finest albums I own. It's still a rocker, and it holds up very well.

4 out of 5 stars A small step backward.......2007-05-08

I remember skipping school to listen to the brand new Van Halen tune fronted by Sammy Hagar, "Why Can't This Be Love?" Man was I disappointed. A year after losing David Lee Roth to a failed attempt at a movie career, Van Halen should have blown their fans minds with something incredible like...well...just about anything on 1984. Instead, they introduced "Van Hagar" to the public with a song that sounded like Journey.

Once the entire album was released, the future of Van Halen seemed much brighter. Rockers like "Get Up," "Best of Both Worlds," "Summer Nights" and "Good Enough" proved that Van Halen still wanted to rock. The title track was, and still is, amazing, one of the best songs in the VH catalog. "Dreams" and "Love Walks In" seemed contrived, strained attempts at expanding on the pop success fueled by "Jump." Lacking the edge or bite of "I'll Wait," the synth songs on 5150 suggested the band might be moving away from its bread and butter, guitar-driven rock. Thankfully, during the rest of Hagar's tenure with the band, poppy keyboard songs were limited to two songs per album.

The straight-ahead rock songs still sound good 21 years later; the synth songs sound schmaltzy and dated. There is enough good -- and some great -- work on 5150 to make it a must-have album. If you're just getting acquainted with the band, 5150's probably not the best place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Short And To The Point.....Kind Of {3.5 Stars}.......2007-01-24

After a few e-mails requesting more reviews of west coast rap acts, I'll spend the rest of the week reviewing the left coast albums I have in my collection. So, here we go.....

Anyway, there really isn't that much to be said about this one here. There are only four tracks (Track 1 is a 49 second intro) and the entire EP clocks in at just over 18 minutes. The two stand out tracks would have to be the classic "Neighborhood Sniper" and "Merry Muthafu**** X-Mas". The beat to the former (produced by Cold 187um) is just too funky and "Merry Muthafu**** X-mas" has more comedic value than anything else. Some will probably get a kick out of the pre-fergilized Black Eyed Peas (yeah, THOSE Black Eyed Peas -- who were intially signed by Eazy E in '91 only to have their debut album shelved indefinitely) cursing and carrying on all over that track. They are listed in the credits as Will 1 X and At Band Klan (their original name, even though it's misspelled in the credits -- it should read "The Atban Klan"). You can tell they were mad young, but the song makes for a good laugh.

As far as flaws go. Well, it's a 5 track EP. Outside of his obsessing over Dr. Dre leaving (the intro to the song...the credits...overabundant hint dropping....etc...), there really isn't a whole lot to say about it, whether it be negative or positive feedback. The four tracks are vintage Eazy E joints. That's about all I can really say about this joint because, again, it's so short.

5150: Home 4 Tha Sick isn't a bad EP, but whether or not you should hear this hinges on how big an Eazy E fan you are. If you're just a fairweather fan or you're on the fence about Eazy, then pass on this one. I can only recommend this to the die hard Eazy E fans. Everyone else should just buy his debut LP. It's a great album and, because 5150 is out of print now, it's included on the rereleased version of the Eazy Duz It album.

Standout Tracks: Neighborhood Sniper (My Favorite) and Merry Muthafu***** X-mas feat. Menajahtwa, Buckwheat from Lil' Waskals, & Will 1 X and At Band Klan (aka Black Eyed Peas)

4 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2004-12-09

This album is short but oh so sweet. Its a classic from start to finish and hell, it even has Dolamite on track five. You can't beat that! The best tracks on this EP are "Only If You Want It" & "Sniper". Its not his best work, for that you have to get "Its On -Dr Dre- 187um Killa". Still, this is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2004-11-28

This Album is a classic no doubt. I can`t understand why everyone complains about the short track amount. Hip Hop albums are not about quanity they are about quility. This Album is classic. EAZY-E was the man. Rest in Peace. 1963-1995

3 out of 5 stars 5150 Review!.......2003-11-26

Following Dre's departure from Ruthless, Eazy released this five-track EP called "5150: Home For The Sick". The EP itself is a collector's item if you can find it though it has been re-packaged with the re-release of "Eazy-Duz-It" and three of the five songs also appear on the greatest hits collection, "Eternal E". Aside from the classic "Neighborhood Sniper" track and the anti-Christmas theme, "Merry Muthaphuckin' X-Mas", there isn't a whole lot of reason to run out and get this EP but if you're a true fan of Eazy, it is worth having.
