The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.

This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.

If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.

A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!

This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. Another great harp compilation CD is "Faces of the Harp" from Narada.

I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!

One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

The first few Annihilator CD's that I heard were Never Neverland, Carnival and Remains. The first thing that struck me was the difference in the styles...from pure unadulterated thrash to industrial. But nothing could prepare me for the shock I was about to receive when I heard STWOF. The first thing that came to mind was music for pop-metal bands like Bon Jovi, Europe, Cinderella. It took a while to sink in, but aside from Aaron Randall's NON-metal voice, and the Europe-ish style music (minus the keyboards) this is a likeable album. Aaron Randall is a great singer, just not a great "Annihilator" singer. The only song that comes closest to "real" Annihilator is "Brain Dance". As much as I hate to admit it the two slower tracks "Phoenix Rising" and "Sounds Good To Me" are the top tracks for this record, followed by the chugging Brain Dance, the title track and No Zone. I can't find fault with any other song either..keep an open mind and you will love this record. If you have heard other Annihilator records and do not want a rude surprise..pass on this album. If you are open to a more pop-oriented Annihilator..Go for it.
JOE COMEAU is still the BEST ANNIHILATOR vocalist ever!!

This is one of the best hard rock/metal albums i've ever listened! No crappy vocalist here.No musicians who don't have a clue.This is a work of art from two perspectives: Jeff had the guts and could reinvent Annihilator with this album.Still technical, still complex tempo changes and moods but with EXTREME melody and catchy choruses.He found a marvellous vocalist in Aaron Randall and the drums are perfect.
Higly Recommended! Insanely funny but memorable nonetheless, this is my personal favorite Annihilator album.



5 out of 5 stars Melodic Metal @ its Best.......2004-12-09

Set The World On Fire is definitely the most melodic Annihilator release to date. This album generally isn't considered thrash metal. Singer Aaron Randall brings a more melodic edge to the music, while Jeff Waters' song-writing here focused more on catchy, memorable songs rather than riff-oriented, fast & technical pieces that dominated the first 2 releases. The production is outstanding, the only problem is that the album is just under 39 minutes, way too short in my opinion!

Set The World On Fire - The title track is centered around a heavily syncopated guitar riff, which is doubled by the rhythm section. Very rhythmic, very powerful. Excellent song!

No Zone - is a short, fast song, with some impressive double bass drumming. A Fun little piece.

Bats In The Belfry - This song is perhaps the weakest on the album for me, it's really nothing special. It's a mid-tempo song, with some interesting changes.

Snake In The Grass - Starts out soft, with an acoustic intro & builds throughout the song. It has an outstanding groove to it.

Phoenix Rising - One of the highlights of the album. A beutifully soaring acoustic ballad that sends shivers down the spine! Waters showcases his talent to the Nth degree on this one!

Knight Jumps Queen - The verses are centered around a bass riff & a very simple AC/DC type drum beat. This is a good straight forward rock song, typical Annihilator! It's got good energy to it.

Souns Good To Me - Another ballad, but this is an upbeat one. Very pleasant and radio friendly.

The Edge - This is more hard rock, then metal. A straight forward, catchy rock anthem.

Don't Bother Me - The song is built on a shuffle type of beat (a la Van Halen). This the other song I'm not too crazy about, it's still OK, I guess.

Brain Dance - Even Jeff Waters admits that this is one of his most challenging guitar parts. The song is very complex, has rhythmic changes galore, stop-start passages & the middle section is like some goofy cartoon song! Hillarious! This is another highlight off of this album.

I can understand how many people were disappointed when this album came out in 1993. Metal was on the decline, and Annihilator became progressively lighter with their 3rd album, but Jeff Waters' song-writing skills still shine through on STWOF. After a decade, I still listen to this CD on a regular basis, because it's just that good!

After Alice in Hell, my expectations were high. I was quickly brought down to Earth and them sumarilly pummeled into the ground about 100 feet by the absolutely abysmal Never,Neverland.
However, just when I thought Annihilator was a one album band, Set the World On Fire rekindled some of my hope....SOME.
First, Aaron Randall can sing. Not only angry metal like Randy Rampage from Alice in Hell but also songs with range which was kind of nice. Unfortuantely that set the stage for Jeff (Waters) to explore more pop metal type songs. Something he didn't fully outgrow until the recent Waking the Fury.
Having said that the album can be split into two groups, pop metal reminiscent of Dokken and bands like them and songs that sound like the Alice in Hell Annihilator.
On the good side, Set the World On Fire, the two really fun songs; Don't Bother Me and Brain Dance and the absolutely awesome Knight Jumps Queen.
The other 6 songs range from okay to make me puke pop metal. The Edge is extremely excruciating (should have known by that title)
Overall, I still think the album is worth buying, 4 great songs is still more than most bands can offer.

This band is one of the very best garage-punk bands I've ever heard. Incredibly lo-fi and tough! Up there with bands like Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, Armitage Shanks and Rocking Richard and Whistling Vic Templar.

      Thinking the 100 tracks this four volume set has to offer would be a relaxing in the car, or underscored during work time, I found the compilation of various composers to be rather jarring. Each CD contains 25 tracks of different movements from 6 to 8 artists, which don't follow any pleasing through line. If you are interested in learning just who composed which famous piece, or if you need to have on hand the top 100 classical pieces (according to whom? I don't know), then this may be right for you. If you are looking for leisure then I suggest you find something that actually completes a symphony.

            This is Annihilator's best album or, at least, my persoanl favorite. This band is really versatile, showing different styles and climates. From the total aggression changes to the most beautiful melodies. Fast songs, semi-ballads, hard rock, you`ll find all that here. Sometimes they sound like Overkill, sometimes Europe, sometimes like any Hard Rock band with the greatest sense of humour. These guys show here that they are not only performers, thay are complete musicians. My favorites are "Set the world on fire"(a classic), "Brain Dance" and "Snake in the grass". No matter which music style you listen to, you should get this CD and listen to a great band.
