Perfect, for what it is and when it was released.......2006-08-30
Great White never did fit the "hair band" mold. They had too much blues influence in their songs, and too much genuine melody and skillful playing. No, they are no virtuosos, but they were a great hard rock band. And listening to this disc now, I am amazed at how well the songs stand up. Put aside the production, guitar tone, overextended solos, and general "80s" vibe, and you'll see the songs are solid. If they came out today, with the exact same songs, they'd be a hit...much like Wolfmother is a hit by (admittedly) copying Zep and AC/DC. It seems there's always a place for catchy blues rock.
Things went downhill fast after this album though. The next one had one or two "hits." One of those was a cover song, and the other more or less a direct copy of "Save Your Love," a song on this album. Then, of course, they had the nightclub tragedy. Still, this album is one of the best of its type from its era.
This is a great cd!.......2006-08-01
I never listend to Great White before but my dad said he liked them so I knew if he did then I knew I would too, and I was right. This cd is totally awesome and my favorite song on here might just be 'Lady Red Light'. This rocks all the way through and I'm planing on getting other Great White cds, my next one will probaly be Twice Shy because I heard that song on VH1 Classic and it's really good. GO OUT AND GET THIS CD!!!
Today's problem with Great White..........2006-01-05
This and several other CD's by Great White released during the 80's are essential classics and examples of great 80's metal (Hooked, Psycho City and Shot in the Dark). Producer Alan Niven made the comment that the band didn't find its "niche" during this time, but I'm surprised at this comment. What is the band doing now in the year 2000's? A bunch of boring covers of Led Zeppelin stuff (did I mention boring)? The band needs to get away from the Tenessee hillbilly cover songs of the 1960's and get back to doing the edgy, melancholic, power melodies they did in the 80's. Songs of realism tempered with a message of hope is what they must return to. Songs with less of a sociological commentary are fine, but these days they're not even heavy rockers anymore. "Psycho City" was Great White's last great CD. "Step On You", "Lovin' Kind", "Angel Song", "Shot in the Dark", "Rock Me"... This will be what we remember from Great White. C'mon boys, go back to it or fade into obscurity.
Once bitten...always rock.......2005-10-19
This is a great classic record for hard rock lovers. i enjoyed it a lot. Great White is a great band.
Once Bitten, twice addicted!!.......2004-02-05
When I first heard "Rock Me" back in 1987, I knew that Great White stood above the rest.I went out and bought "Once Bitten" and after hearing it, I promptly began buying every bit of GW music I could find. This album sets the standard for blues based rock. If you don't own this disc, drop what you are doing and buy it now!! Mark Kendall's guitar work is a perfect mix of Jimmi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and his own original style. And what can you say about Jack Russell's voice? He is the man! A great album from a great band!!

Great White Once Bitten, Twice Live.......2006-07-05
It is an excellent cd if you can get how the songs are broken between songs which is very annoying
DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!.......2006-05-21
I picked this up in a store because it said "1st time on CD" It sounds like someone who doesn't know how to use a CD burner or burning software prepped it for release... 2 second gaps... cuts off either the end of songs or between song chatter. Just VERY poorly done. Buy "Thank You... Goodnight!" which is fantastic!
Virtually defective - horrible post production!.......2006-05-17
Nothing wrong with the performance by the band. But Sidewinder Music should recall these and put out a proper replacement. There are 2 second gaps of silence between all the tracks, like you get when you burn a cd-r in "track at once" mode. Even worse, the silence is not appended onto the ends of the tracks, but actually erases what should be in its place. One track will end with Jack in mid-word, and the next will start with a song, cutting off what Jack was saying. HORRIBLE!!!!
Amateur Mixing !.......2006-05-05
This is a strong live record by Great White but there is a stop gap between each track which completely ruins the feel of a live cd. You would think that Sidewinder would have fixed this before reissuing it on their own label. But, they did not. Some of the tracks start and stop so abruptly that it sound like part of the song is missing. This is very unprofessional and it should not have been released like this much less reissued.
UNFAIR!!.......2006-03-25
there should be a law against this,it is the very same cd as THANK YOU,GOODNIGHT..A GREAT SHOW but unfair to bring it out under a different name 2 years later

Album Description
Seventh studio album for popular & successful Inverness folk-rock band, following 2000's live disc 'Not Enough Shouting'. Combining folk instrumentation (pipes, whistles, fiddles, accordion) with electric guitar, bass & drums, they inject Scots traditional music with the raw spirit of rock 'n' roll on another rousing collection of standards & original material. Once Bitten Records. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
"I can hear the coolest sound" (from Jericho).......2005-12-25
this is a fantasic CD
the first 2 tracks "The Piper and the Shrew" and "Elav the Terrible" I think they're a single track divide to 2, war pipe+fiddle+loud guitar make these 2 tracks full of energy, morale, and power
"4/5 Madness" is kinda lead-in, go to the top, back to lower state, then end with smoothness
this CD is better than any product from GL, recommended for Wolfstone fans, it's a mix of Scottish+Pop+Celtic
wolfstone.......2005-08-20
After seeing them live in concert, i must say they are damn good. The Cd includes many celtic tunes with a mix of rock. They make this mix with a perfect combination, it's just a great cd and worth a buy. The fiddle and bagpipes add that essential highland style, with the rest of the band. They are amazing live and their cd is also amazing.
A Playful, Bouncy Masterpiece.......2003-06-05
This long-awaited sequel to Wolfstone's less-than-perfect 1999 album "Seven" showcases the copious talents of a band fully recovered from the departure of singer and guitarist Ivan Drever. It is, in the band's opinion and my own, the best release yet from the Scottish foursome.
On this album, unlike the band's earlier efforts, Duncan Chisholm's lively, beautiful fiddle playing shares the driver's seat equally with Stephan Saint's haunting pipes and whistles. While I was somewhat disappointed at first by the increased use of pipes, but it has grown on me. It seems especially appropriate on the instrumental tracks, where fiddle and bagpipe wind around each other in the mix so that the listener is occasionally unsure which is which. Alan Cosker, a recent addition to the band's recording lineup, keeps the music rolling with his excellent, understated drumming. Unlike other folk-rock bands like Tempest and Dropkick Murpheys, who tend to let their heavy drumming overshadow their celtic roots, Wolfstone keep the percussion subtle enough to blend seamlessly with the rest of the instruments. The music has taken a bit of a new direction, however, with Wayne MacKenzie's bouncy, thumpy bass taking more of a lead than on earlier recordings; it works. As always, Stuart Eaglesham's beautiful tenor (superior to any other voice in Celtic rock) and crunchy guitars give the album that distinctive touch that Wolfstone fans love.
Phil Cunningham's influence is perhaps more pronounced on this album than any before it. The ex-Silly Wizard keyboard and squeezebox player who has worked with the band since its first studio recording has left the producer's chair to play with the band on almost every track on the album. His immistakeable style is most exhibited in the closing track, "The Panda," a rollicking instrumental by piper George Duncan of Northwind Country. The record even features a cover one of Silly Wizard's best songs: "Queen of Argyll" from "Kiss the Tears Away".
This album is primarily instrumental, with only four out of ten tracks having lyrics. This is due to the departure of Ivan Drever, who lettered most of Wolfstone's best-known ballads. This is not a bad thing; the large number of instrumentals gives the band a chance to really show off their stuff.
My favorite track on the island is, in fact, not celtic in origin at all. "Jericho" is a rocking, hard-driven zydecho tune unlike anything the band has played before. It is simply fantastic.
Wolfstone's excellent vocals and production set them a pace ahead of other groups in their genre like Tempest, Seven Nations, and Brother. They are, simply, the best Celtic Rock group playing today, true heirs to the legacy of Silly Wizard. Buy this album; buy two copies. Give it to your friends. They will thank you.
An evolving band ,still going strong!.......2003-05-28
With the departure of singer,Ivan Drever and the end of their association with Green Linnet Records, I really wondered if we had seen the last of 'ole Wolfstone...
Happily, they have returned on an indie label with a pretty good good effort...the lead vocal chores are nicely handled by Stuart Eaglesham, with strong background vocals by Duncan Chisholm, Wayne MacKenzie and Phil Cunningham.
That said however, what saves and really moves this disc are the instrumentals, which have never been stronger!
For this listener, the vocal tunes just don't click- plainly: they are weak!...hopefully the songwriting will get stronger with future releases and these guys can get their travel visa problems solved, returning to tour in the States soon!
Glad you are still rockin' Wolfstone!
THIS is the Wolfstone we've been waiting for!.......2002-12-10
I cannot say enough about the power of this cd. If you like heavy, yet intricate, Celtic rock, this album is a must. Not peppered with "pop" vocals or "off-theme" stuff as their last studio album was. I saw Wolfstone perform this album live in Colorado and they were totally into it! Get it and ENJOY!!

Ian Hunter is one of the great everyman rockers. Frontman for the mighty if ill-starred Mott the Hoople (whose big break was followed shortly by a lamentable implosion), Hunter went solo in the mid-1970s, scoring early on with the likes of "Once Bitten Twice Shy," "Cleveland Rocks," and "Ships" (the latter an unlikely hit for Barry Manilow). Into the '80s and '90s, the frizzy-haired Brit with the Dylanesque vocal delivery missed his mark as often as not, but one couldn't help root for a guy who reconciled his smart, sensitive, and impudent sides and made music that reflected those same qualities. This 38-track, two-CD retrospective organizes Hunter's post-glam solo work from 1975 'til 1996, clustering the rockers on the first disc and the ballads on the second. Further sequenced in chronological order, the discs lose momentum as they progress, but most of the two sides of Hunter range from good to grand. Not bad for a rock & roll journeyman. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Ambitious 2 disk collection of 38 songs..........2004-10-11
Ambitious 2 disk collection of 38 songs with the first disk being rockers and the second ballads. In addition to the obvious songs it contains b-sides, alternate versions, songs from movie soundtracks and unreleased tracks. It also includes a nice 28 page booklet with some witty comments from Hunter on each song. Now to nit-pik, it should have been in chronological order, it skipped over several hits including Just Another Night, and it has him doing All The Young Dudes with Def Leppard. Yeach! I guess one of the best things about being old is that I was lucky enough to see a Mott The Hoople concert at their creative peak at the Boston Orpheum. Another plus to help offset Leppard is it has the Genya Raven duet, Junkman. Did you know that Van Morrison was supposed to be the male vocalist on that? Despite the nitpicking I still give it * * * * .
P.S. - I think that Hunter, along with Mick Jagger and Joe Strummer is one of the few British singers who actually sound British.
The Best of...not really........2001-12-16
No matter how you view Ian Hunter's contributions to rock, his is a long, varied, and storied career. This collection gives you a listen to a number of Hunter's best work along with a variety of other tunes that are of interest to long time Hunter fans. But your first clue that this is far from a true best of comes when you realize the songs that are missing, "Irene Wilde","Just Another Night", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" among the many tunes that should be here. (You are told to refer to the albums for these tunes...if you can't get the best songs on a best of collection what's the point?)Then read Hunter's own comments about the song "Justice of the Peace"- "Fabricated. The whole Overnight Angels album was recorded too high for my voice"...Does this sound like a greatest hit? I enjoyed this collection and the idea of dividing the songs into Rockers and Ballads but I'm still waiting for a true Greatest Hits collection for this incredible artist.
A great collection, but not for Hunter neophytes.......2001-06-08
Putting together a collection like this always creates a dilemma, one that is usually solved by screwing true fans who have to pay for an album full of songs they already have in order to obtain a rarity or two. Because the compilers of this collection went the opposite way, I'm really inclined to give it 5 stars on general principle.
Out of the 38 songs on these two discs, only 12 are standard album versions, and of those 4 are from "Overnight Angels" and "All Of The Good Ones Are Taken" which are out of print and damn near impossible to find on cd. Everything else is an alternate take, a single edit, previously unreleased, or rare soundtrack material. Amazingly, none of these rarities coincide with the disc of rarities released with the reissue of "Short Back 'n' Sides" a few years ago. So what you have here is really a generous gift to the fans.
On the other hand, as several other reviewers have noted, the lack of some of Hunter's strongest and/or most familiar material (squeezed out by the large number of outtakes and rarities) makes this a very poor introduction/overview of Hunter's career. The casual fan just looking to get a standard "best of" compilation will likely be left cold, and this is certainly not the selection of tracks I would choose to introduce a friend to Hunter's quirky charms. Nevertheless, a lot of the rarities are quite good, especially the moving live performance of "Michael Picasso". If you are already among the converted, you will definitely want this one. If you are a casual fan, caveat emptor.
Greatest Unknown Rockstar!?.......2001-02-10
I have followed Ian's career since the days of Mott The Hopple. He has released some of the best music in rock history, that is virtually unknown to the general public. All the Young Dudes is about the only recognizable song for most. This 2 CD set is a great starter for those about enter the world of Mr.Hunter. While I would have preferred to hear some other tunes that I think are perhaps better songwriting, I must leave it to Ian to provide us what HE thinks should be on His records. My only regret is that he did not include the song, American Music, one of the greatest tributes to the original roots of rock n' roll. I cannot say enough good things about this artist. Just listen to Once Bitten Twice Shy and God. Oh, by the way, the next one you should buy is Welcome To The Club with Mick Ronson, perhaps in the top 5 greatest live albums ever! Enough Said 'Rock On Ian'
All The Way From Shropshire - A Real Rock Gem.......2001-02-06
When Mott The Hooples classic All The Young Dudes hit the shelf almost thirty years ago, I was one of the first in line to buy it - and the music of Ian Hunter has been one of the many constants in my life ever since.
This is the hidden history of rock and roll, the essential essence, its timeless qualities and haunting reminders of disquieting beauty, vulnerability and inner strength. Ian Hunter is one of rocks true long distance runners, who has made rock and roll his life, carried out with true dedication, professionalism and honesty that is reflected in his rockers and ballads. Ian Hunter is the real working class rock hero that Lennon characterized so well, and Ian knows and lets us know what he thinks this thing called life is all about.

Martyn R Jones

Customer Reviews:
Fine collection.......2000-10-18
I've been waiting for something like this for awhile, and overall it exceeds expectations.
Caveat: This is definitely not a "greatest hits" collection, and as such it'll be received better by fans than by the casual listener. There are some of the "hits" (Once Bitten, Cleveland Rocks, etc.), but it's more a sort of retrospective that covers a lot of unreleased stuff, undoubtedly of more interest to fans.
Having said all that, Ian says he's an acquired taste, and that's true, so I bet most people buying this collection already have most, if not all of his albums. In that context it wouldn't really have made sense to put all those familiar, favorite songs on here exactly as they appear on the albums. The radio edits are interesting in their own rights - little lyric changes on All American Alien Boy and a shorter Women's intuition (the album version always seemed a tad long for me anyway), etc. - regardless of whether they're "superior" to the ones we're used to. The rarities are largely excellent. A few don't grab me, but so what? Ian's liner notes for each song are brief but interesting and, of course, honest. Even he doesn't fancy absolutely everything he's put out...
And yeah, as with most collections, everyone (including me) is gonna have an opinion about what tracks should've made the final cut and which should've been left off, but you can't please all the people all the time, and this set gives a great representation of the many facets of Ian (with fantastic input from the people he's played with over the years, especially Mick). The sound quality is excellent, too.
This set is a slice of incredible, unique musical history. Only minor subjective complaints - overall really excellent. Maybe it's not ABSOLUTELY perfect to me, but I give it five stars anyway because, well, it's Ian.
(Note to record company: Ian's got more than enough classic songs to put out a proper "greatest hits" collection for newer fans, and even diehard fans would probably shell out the $ for it, so run that up the flagpole too, please...)
A great introduction to the artist.......2000-07-12
If all you have ever heard of Ian Hunter is the theme from Drew Carey show, this is a great place to start! Hunter is one of the great rockers of our time and has little to show for it. Hopefully this album will bring Ian back into the public eye. If your a long time fan, this is the colleciton you've been waiting for, if your just discovering Ian, start here. And yes, Cleveland Rocks is on this album!
ian hunter.......2000-07-12
ian who.....oh my what you don't know about this great rocker....leader of mott the hoople....one of the great stage performers in rock....literal, funny, intelligent marriage of blonde on blonde era lyrics with a stones backbeat and you come up with the great ian hunter....nothing against great white, but the original young dude is the best.... he never comes up short... pick up the live cd or the upcoming best of...it'll open your eyes
Ian Hunter - once bitten , twice shy.......2000-07-11
I don't know whos came first but this one has nothing on the Great white version back in the 80's.. "Ian WHO?" , should 've saved the money for the studio and bought some bud's..
