5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Hard to review two classics at the same time.......2006-01-29

I got Alice in Hell and Never Neverland almost 17 years ago and they got lost somewhere when I moved back many years ago.

I was always more a fan of Never Neverland because I think the compositions and production are a level higher than Alice.

But for Alice. What a classic. There are some mad shredding riffs in there. As a guitarist, Waters has always been some kind of inspiration even today.

I think the vocals on Alice in Hell are more rough and draft than Never Neverland but that's just me. Buy it even if it's just for the songs Crystal Ann and Alice in Hell.

Excellent old school trash metal

5 out of 5 stars The Best Deal in Metal.......2005-11-23

It is no longer necessary to search eBay and countless music stores to obtain the classic first two Annihilators. In order to make the might of Annihilator known to the masses, Roadrunner has rereleased both of them together and thus created the best metal package available for half the price.

The first album, Alice in Hell, is gritty and raw. The fires of pure thrash are here, furious speed, amazing solos, with plenty of diversity. A wicked flamenco intro, several odd time signatures, and a few brief clean interludes make for a dark and heavy album.

The second album, Never Neverland, provides a more well rounded album. Coburn Pharr, vocalist on this album, provides a clear powerful voice, even if he doesn't have the might and prescence of Randy Rampage(from the first album). Neverland is just as fast and powerful as the first with more melodic sections as well as slightly more mature lyricism.

The fact that these albums are being sold together for the price of one is more than enough incentive to buy them.

5 out of 5 stars Good Speed Metal.......2005-08-25

All I am going to say is that these two albums are good and the only good albums by Annihilator. You have two different singers on these albums,Alice In Hell(Randy Rampage),Never,Neverland(Coburn Pharr)there both good at singing. All the songs rule besides the song Stonewall off of Never,Neverland. If you like speed metal buy these two albums or buy them on one like this one is.

5 out of 5 stars THRASH METAL BEST ALBUMS - PERIOD!.......2005-01-29

How can people prefer Metallica, Megadeth or Slayer instead of Annihilator is something unclear to me and really makes me sad.How can't the world value the talent of Jeff Waters?
Well, if you are into thrash metal or virtuosic guitars but done with originality and memorable riffs and awe inspiring and breathtaking changes in tempos, it doesn't get better than Annihilator. Some may argue about Set The World On Fire being too much pop-metal oriented or that the voice of Jeff diminished the power in such gems as King Of The Kill or Remains (all albums post - Never, Neverland)but the intense glow with sheer perfection of this two first Annihilator jewel albums can not be touched!
The fact that Roadrunner gives this two to you, the elusive buying public, at the price of one album and remastered both of them plus bonus tracks is mind - blowing!
Highly Recommended! What are you waiting for? No, you don't need to listen to samples! Just buy them. You will thank me.Trust me!

5 out of 5 stars 2 gems for the price of one...........2005-01-24

With all the talk of 80's thrash classics and arrows pointing to such illuminaries as Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and others, there is one album that seemingly gets forgetten and may be one of the most enjoyable of all: Annihilator's Alice In Hell. Though the album was purportedly recorded as a demo, the stellar guitar sound and absolute speed frenzy of Jeff Waters' excellent guitar ability make this a fist pumping thrash dynamo. Nearly every song here is top notch, with highlights being "Alison Hell", "Human Insecticide" (one of the fastest songs I can think of as the guitar retains such clarity in the accelerated playing), "Burns like a Buzz Saw Blade" and "W.T.Y.D." Waters has an uncanny ability to create guitar rhythms that carry songs immensely well and also immediately give Annihilator a singular, unique sound. Sure, Randy Rampage (who lasted through this album and the tour afterwards) isn't exactly what I would call a dynamic vocalist, but his sneering growls are perfect for the album. If, for some odd reason, you like thrash and don't have this in your collection, you will most certainly join Alice.

Annihilator's second album featuring new singer Coburn Pharr something of a dual headed dragon. The first half was absolutely top notch throughout while the second side nearly disemboweled itself on weak songs and joke tracks that would have been more at home on a Descendents record ("Kraf Dinner"). Though I just said that, I still catch myself smiling at its lyrics every once-in-a-while. Nevertheless, Never, Neverland featured remarkably stylish production from Glen Robinson and again showcased guitarist Jeff Waters' sparkling ability. As songs like "The Fun Palace", "Stonewall" and the title track all aptly demonstrate, his sense of rhythm and grand control over picking patterns should have placed him amongst the thrash elite of the time. For the songs that clicked, his style is simply phenomenal and even on the weaker songs, he still plays better than most. I think the biggest problem Never, Neverland (and perhaps Annihilator as a whole) suffered from was the lack of a true band feeling. Coburn Pharr is a capable singer and much more talented than his predecessor, Randy Rampage, but Rampage had a bigger presence overall. Pharr sounded more like the hired hand than a singer giving his heart and soul to the band. Yet, even with all its flaws, Never, Neverland is a great record that really deserved more attention than it ultimately received.

Both of these albums are gems in the thrash metal genre and we all can graciously thank Roadrunner records for re-releasing these tems together for the price of one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing !!!.......2006-08-06

On a personal level, Never Neverland is a very special album to me, by the fact that thanks to it I discovered one of the most fantastic and overlooked guitar heroes on the face of the planet: Mr. Jeff Watters.
The dynamics of the songs, the great execution and the incredible amount of technical resources shown by the musicians on this recording makes of Never Neverland an overwhelming and bombastic sonic experience.
The chemistry between Watters and the killer rhythm section (Ray Hartman on drums and Wayne Darley on bass) is simply out of this world.
My actual rating is 4.5 stars. Never Neverland falls short from perfection due to vocalist Coburn Pharr's performance, which I found somewhat stiff and unexpressive, excepting the aforementioned complain everything else is state of the art.
Favorite songs: "The Fun Palace", "Sixes and Sevens", "Never Neverland","Road To Ruin", "Reduced To Ash".

4 out of 5 stars Not Alice in Hell.......2005-11-23

If you expect every Annihilator album to be like Alice in Hell, you'll be disappointed early. Never Neverland would better with the vocal talents of Randy Rampage instead of Coburn Pharr, but it has its appeal yet.

Firstly, I'm always impressed with the instrumentation on these albums. All of the riffs are brilliant, and the solos masterful. Songs like The Fun Palace, Phantasmagoria, and I Am In Command are among Annihilator's classics even to this day. The Never Neverland title track 'ballad' is wicked as well. All the guitarwork on this CD is incredibly well done. As for lyrics, they tend to be more moralistic, advocating against drunk driving, pollution, gambling, nuclear warfare, and corrupt religious leaders. The only out of place song was the goofy Kraf Dinner, clearly about macaroni and cheese. On a whole, I liked this album, especially compared to some of the albums to come.

1 out of 5 stars Pop metal anyone?.......2004-04-10

Wow, the previous reviews literally scare me. People liked this album?? Is this some sort of mass collective joke?
I love Annihilator, I have all their albums, and listen to them constantly, but this album has remained shelved for many, many years. Absolute pure junk.
Let's start with the obvious problems. Number one on the list is Coburn Pharr, who can't sing period, let alone sing good metal. What Jeff was thinking when he hired this "wanna-be" I'll never know.
Second, the album is pop metal. While some of the guitar work is still awesome, the songs lack any "metal" to them. I never once replayed a part to hear it again cause it was so cool. Something I did do on their equally disapointing King of the Kill.
Then there are the lyrics which went from awesome and fun on Alice in Hell to silly and just plain stupid.
Luckily Jeff went a different way with this band, and dumped Pharr.
Alice in Hell (their first album) was a thousand times better than this, the third effort, even Set the World on fire, and equally pop metal like album, was better having some really great metal songs as well as some truly fun songs and having at least a decent singer.
The two new albums Carnival Diablos and Waking the Fury absolutely rule and if you're looking for the same thrill you got when you bought Alice in Hell, get them now.
Skip this disaster, the closest to sell-out album, Jeff and the band ever got.
One thing though, I have to admit the song, Phantasmagoria absolutely rules. Note though that it was written before even Alice in Hell. Unfortunately for this album, it was also released with Bag of Tricks featuring Jeff's vocals, which are far superior to Pharr's hoarse vocal strains.

3 out of 5 stars "Welcome to the fun palace".......2004-01-29

Annihilator was a metal band lead by guitar virtuoso Jeff Waters. He wrote or co-wrote every track on this album and proves a very creative, intelligent lyricist. Waters took a lot of care in these songs and even includes the stories behind the songs. Some examples: the title track is about a girl confined to a room by a fanatically overprotective grandmother after the girl looked at a boy in a grocery store; "Sixes and Sevens" comes from the British phrase for disorder; "Road to Ruin" is about a drunk driver ("impaired security at ninety miles an hour"); "Kraf Dinner" is about just what the title states without risking copyright infringes ("a cheddar cheese heart attack"); "Stonewall" was written after Waters moved to Vancouver and discovered the depressing reality of chemical damage to a river.

The music is also very creative. The guitar in "Never, Neverland" (not affiliated with Michael Jackson's estate) is beautiful (not unlike "Crystal Ann" from their debut album) and it incorporates a story-telling vocal. Things get silly, though, when they get to the defensive part: "Get back, back! Just leave us all alone! Take that and that! I'll break your every bone!" (can you imagine a little girl yelling this?). Some of the songs are preachy, especially "Stonewall" ("the power of corporations, spewing chemicals into the air. Fines are imposed to discourage, but what's a dime to a millionaire.") Still, the album rocks with, of course, excellent guitar. The music gets more thrash in the last tracks, although I find the first half of the album to be more interesting. It is also more solid than their previous album Alice in Hell.

5 out of 5 stars The best album of 1990!!!.......2003-03-31

This album by Annihilator is an absolute masterpiece. It is definitely the best album of 1990, possibly the best, period. I don't think that there is a metal album that can compare to this album. Everything about Never Neverland is awesome. Coburn Pharr is absolutely fantastic and Jeff Waters shows why he is such a great musician. Jeff's rhthym guitar is terrific and there is not ONE bad song on this album. This album also features absolutely fast songs such as Phantasmagoria as well as slower melodic songs like Stonewall and the title track. This album does not have any ballads but who cares? This is a great album by a great band who to this day continues writing fast heavy metal after Megadeth and Metallica became more commercial. This album is better than any Pantera, Megadeth or Slayer album in my opinion. This record is just 10 times better than a few other famous albums of 1990 such as Cowboys From Hell or Rust In Peace.

Even though Jeff had a drinking problem, he wrote and still writes great music while Dave Mustaine who became greedy is now out of the music business and he really has lost his ability to write good meaningfull songs. This album is worth it for every heavy metal fan and anyone who is looking for a heavy metal cd with no flaws MUST buy this album.

Officially released in Asia with 3 bonus tracks 'Kraf Dinner'(Demo), 'Mayhem' (Demo of Reduced To Ash) & 'Freed From The Pit'(Demo of Road To Run). Comparable to Metallica and Judas Priest at their heaviest, Never, Neverland is a blistering gem that takes no prisoners either musically or lyrically. One of 1990's strongest metal releases.

5 out of 5 stars ANNIHILATOR KILLS THE COMPETITION.......2002-05-01

EXCELLENT FOLLOW UP TO ALICE IN HELL. VERY COMPLEX RIFFING THAT YOU WON'T GET BORED WITH. EVEN WITH A NEW SINGER, THE SONGS ARE AGGRESSIVE WITH A NICE MELODY. FAVORITE SONGS ARE: THE FUN PALACE, SIXES AND SEVENS, IMPERILED EYES AND THE TITLE SONG.

        5 out of 5 stars A thrash metal masterpiece!.......2002-02-20

This is almost "progressive thrash" given the extra-class guitar work of Jeff Waters, the intricate arrangements of every theme, the polished production, the elegance and mystery spread all along this CD, and the wonderful compositions and lyrics here contained. You'll find in this release rough vocals over a precise machine of playing music, sustained by a virtuous guitar soloing and riffing, and also touched by a perfect bass playing and drumming. "The fun palace", "Sixes and Sevens" and "Imperiled Eyes" are probably amongst the greatest metal pieces ever written! I give to this CD five stars, and recommend it to anyone wanting to be initiated to the thrash metal genre. This is a MASTERPIECE, and if you are serious about music I'm sure you'll appreciate it in all its majesty. By far, one of the best metal albums of all the times!
