Customer Reviews:
Bursting with Visceral Life and Earthy Joy!.......2007-02-16
Hard to believe we can buy this precious gem for under $10 -- and what a gem it is! Easily my favourite medieval music CD. This isn't museum music, or a cerebral esoteric dip into European medieval cultures. This music leaps out and grabs you -- recalling images of everything from the still smile of a 13th-century Madonna to the chaos of Breugel and Bosch. Belinda Sykes' voice is alive with earth, grit, heat, and a transcendent beauty that needs to be experienced to be believed. The musicians are magicians: they'll have you dancing, singing, praying -- getting your bare feet soiled in the hot holy dust of a pilgrim's trail: enjoy!
Unexpected delight.......2006-08-29
Not sure what I was expecting, but this is a very refreshing collection. Hypnotic and robust at the same time. Two thumbs up -- 'at's all I got.
Would be Worth Buying at Three Times the Price.......2006-02-19
One of the hidden gems of the Naxos catalog are the series of recordings of Medieval music by the Ensemble Unicorn with Michael Posch. The music they choose to record here comes from the 14th century Llivre Vermell de Monstserrat preserved there in an codex of five parts. The book resulted from an attempt to set contemporary popular music to spiritual texts to help to reach out to a wider audience.
This CD is exemplary in every possible way. The liner notes written by Michael Posch himself are superb. Furthermore, the recorded sound quality is pretty much audiophile grade and runs rings around those produced by major record labels for the fraction of the price. The music making is beautiful, evocative and fascinating with all performances having the intensity and brilliance you can always count on from this superb ensemble.
Very highly recommended.
Here's my two cents.......2006-02-10
Let me add my two cents to the laudatory reviews already given. I bought this CD some time ago when I was developing an interest in early music. The title and the theme fascinated me. Also it was inexpensive, and I know from my experience that NAXOS, even though inexpensive, delivers quality goods. I was not the least disappointed. This is the music of an important era in history brilliantly performed by Unicorn Ensemble and Belinda Sykes. Belinda Sykes deserves to be better known than she is. She has a marvelous voice, and her delivery is without peer. When she sings, I am transported back to the days of those pilgrims whose songs she is singing. This music is not like other music. at times it may seem raucous. Just keep in mind the epoch from which these songs come. Open your mind. I assure you that you will be transformed.
a window on another world.......2005-12-05
I picked up this cd because of a family connection with the Black Madonna of Monserrat. She's an integral part of the religious life of my dad's hometown. I thought the cd would make a good present for my dad but I didn't really expect the music to be anything special. However, I was simply blown away upon listening to it. This is an incredible blend of voice, rhythm and percussion that conveys the earthiness and transcendence of peasant pilgrim experience. I'm not a fan of early music -- I don't dislike it, I just don't know that much about it. Most of the early music I have listened to, however, is nowhere near as textured and intricate as these songs. What's amazing to my ears is that arrangements manage to sound both ancient and startlingly contemporary at the same time. I'm betting that sooner or later, someone will be giving these songs a trance-music treatment -- if that hasn't already happened.

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

An intelligent blend of melodic and heavy rock, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is arguably King's X's finest album. It's more exciting than the followup Faith Hope Love, with the heavy opener "Out of the Silent Planet" (C.S. Lewis fans take note), and the hard rock "Fall On Me" and "Over My Head" (a single from the album). There are ballads as well, such as the beautiful "Summerland." The inclusion of the organ, the sitar, and the dulcimer in the arsenal of instruments adds a nice touch. Heavy metal fans may grow impatient with this one, but fans of melody-oriented progressive rock will definitely want to check it out. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Proof that King's X had something to offer the industry.......2007-05-10
Gretchen, the sophomore effort by Doug, Ty and Jerry, proved that they had the licks, the lyrics and the guts to stick. And thank goodness. An all around fantastic album.
The first song, "Out of the Silent Planet" is monstrous, just gigantic, one of their best ever. Other standouts include: "Over My Head" which Doug later reveals was inspired by his lack of mother and father and a grandmother who raised him but never showed him love, "Summerland" pure and simple perfection, period, "Everybody Knows A Little Bit Of Something", "Pleiades" about the philosopher who was burned at the stake for saying the world was round. All other songs round out the album nicely and do little to detract from the truly great tracks.
9.0/10 Unbelievable album........2007-02-23
I am shocked that this band never got more attention than it has. This is the only King's X album I have but it is in my top 10 CDs of all time. It's ridiculously good. It took a few listens to really get into it but once I'd heard it enough times, I was hooked. No song is really bad and there are some great ones. Over My Head is ridiculously amazing and I'm surprised it's not a noted classic song along with Pianoman, Stairway to Heaven and Freebird. Summerland and Out of the Silent Planet are also fantastic. The way Fall on Me starts is awesome. The riff in that is one of the best although the rest of the song is lacking a little bit. Overall, I'd give this CD a 9/10 because it's not perfect but it has some incredible songs on it and it blows my mind that more people haven't heard it.
Still as fresh now as it was then........2007-01-09
I discovered King's X on "Head Banger's Ball" on MTV back in '89 with the 'Summerland' video. I think it followed a video by Nuclear Assault! Is that funny or what? Anyway, GGTN was mine the next day and would have been mine right then if the stores were still open. Man...What a great album by a great group that just gets better with every spin (of the cd that is). Add this to your collection and most of the cds in it will pale.
Awesome Progressive Rock from a very underated KING's X.......2007-01-04
Wonderful Hard Rock with great Vocal Harmonies reminiscent of "The Beatles". I like the Spiritul tone of the lyrics and Doug's powerful lead vocal. Ty Tabor is excellent as usual. I am definetly sold on KING's X!
One of the GREATEST Hard Rock Albums ever recorded!!.......2006-12-15
Not much needs to be added to the existing reviews. Only the fact that this is one of the most passionate, most powerful rock albums EVER recorded and I would put it in my top 10 hard rock albums of all time!! Why these guys aren't MUCH bigger than they are is one of commercial music's great mysteries!!! Guess it's a reflection on the sorry state of the modern music business!! And Ty Tabor is one of my favorite guitarists as well, as good as ANYONE out there but (unlike many, MANY others) knows when to hold back!!
Unfortunately, in my opinion, they have never equaled it though they are still one of the most talented bands out there. If you listen to rock at all, in ANY form, buy this CD...but it NOW!!

Customer Reviews:
another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21
This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.
Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.
As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!
awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15
I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.
The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.
But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.
In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

One of the true signs of a great band, think U2 (just some trivia for ya': King's X started out as a U2 cover band), is the ability to adapt, to change your sound and stay fresh. King's X has done this over and over while still holding true to their original sound and harmonies.
This album was like a step to the right of "Faith, Hope, Love", their previous release. "F,H,L" was more music. This, King's X's 4th album but first selftitled, seems to suggest a new King's X.
The new band is one that continues to use harmonies but with deeper musical development. Each of the songs on the album is a study in music theory. They really explore and penetrate the musical landscape on this album. Don't worry, the harmonies are still there too.
Standouts on the album are: "Prisoner", "Big Picture", "Lost in Germany", "Ooh Song" which is aptly titled because of the deep soul feel, "What I Know About Love" which strikes deep for anyone that has suffered heartbreak (so, yeah, anyone), and "Black Flag" of which the video got some play on MTV and even served as fodder for 'Beavis and Butthead'. The rest of the songs round out the album well and I can't really say there are any weak offerings.
I love this CD.......2006-06-02
"I Cant Resist" The first track is a barnburner and starts the whole cd off! This is one of my favorites!
A great place to start... and to come back to again and again........2006-05-15
I'm writing this review after having just seen King's X in concert for the third time. In preparation for the concert, I spent the week reviewing, rotating all of their CD's through my car CD player over the course of the week. When I got to their self titled album, I noticed (for the first time) how stripped town Jerry's drumming is on "World Around Me," a song that I've liked for many years. It amazed me that after all these years (about 15?) I am still finding little easter eggs of brilliance ALL OVER that album.
This was my first King's X album, and I recommend it to any first-time listener for the following reasons:
-It still has moments that sound like their Gretchen days
-It foreshadows what comes later, like Dogman and the amazing new Ogre Tones
-It still contains hints of their spiritual roots (okay, more than a few hints... some very cool / obscure references that only you biblical scholars out there might actually catch on first listen)
-It is an album that continues to amaze me, even after 15 years of fairly consistent listening.
If you like rock that makes you think... A LOT... you need to check out this band, and especially this album.
(I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the album always strikes me as inconsistent... the funny thing is, there are songs on that album that take a while to grow on you. I never liked Big Picture when I first got that album, but years later, it's so much like moments in Ogre Tones that I find that it has become one of my favorite of their songs.)
One of their best efforts! .......2006-05-04
It's been a while since I picked up this cd and it's about time I told the world how great this cd is.
It truly encompasses what King's X is all about. Clean melodic guitars, bass tone to die for and absolutely wonderful hocks and melodies. It really doesn't get any better than this. Ty Tabor's guitar work is refreshing and refined and Doug Pinnick's bass tone and his vocal style are first rate. All the songs on here are catchy and you can easily sing along to them if you feel up to it. Your senses will love how beautifully this cd rolls along. It's just like a hot knife through butter (to quote Kiss), I love it!
All in all this band is one of the worlds greatest mystery's as they truly DO NOT get the recognition they deserve.
They have had some average offerings along the way as they've tried to play with their style somewhat in order to get more main stream. This was only done to try and satisfy their record labels greed to make money, however this offering is not one of those efforts. This puppy totally kicks ass!!
King's X is a great band that only a few know anything about!!
Now I love it.......2005-10-19
It is hard to dislike a King's X CD. But, shockingly I did not care for this when it first came out. Now, it has grown on me and it has become quite a favorite from the hard rocking opener, the cool Prisoner, the progressive Chariot Song, the awesome "Not just for the dead" and the haunting "Silent Wind". Great CD - my favorite of their first four. And it's odd because I liked the others so much back then but only recently realized what a gem this was. Perhaps the most underrated American rock band.

The emergence of greatness! Say hello to KING'S X!!!!.......2007-05-10
This was the debut album for Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill, henceforth known as King's X. They would acquire a cult like following from this albums release that stands still today.
The truly great thing about this album is the fact that, when hair bands where spewing the same old crap that people seemed to eat up because it was always on the radio, these guys took it upon themselves to create a new version of the genre.
Out of the Silent Planet is a rock/funk/jazz and blues without the horns fusion that broke new ground. I would compare it to the genius of Steely Dan in the 70's, when they took the classic rock sound and added jazz/blues/soul to create their own sound.
Harmonies on vocals are the earmark of King's X. These guys were born to sing together. Jerry (drummer) and Ty (guitar) have the perfect voices to blend in as backup to Doug's (bass) soulful, low key bluesy sound.
The standouts on the album are: "In The New Age" which has one of the coolest bass lines I have ever heard, "Goldilox" which is a love song of sorts, "King" which was an early sign of their ability to play on words brilliantly, "Shot Of Love" which uses harmony like only the Beatles could do before.
Remaining songs on the album are strong at least. This is a stand-up, take no prisoners, this is who we are, welcome to King's X album and they don't apologize.
Thankfully, they didn't quit. Almost 20 years later, they are still going strong.
A great intro album and a must have.
forgot how good this album is.......2007-03-26
Funny to listen to this again after so many years. Lotsa great tracks and the songs just get better and better the more you listen. You can really hear the influence Kings X must have had on Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, etc. "In the New Age" alone has elements borrowed by each if those bands. "Far, Far Away" has some of the best vocals dUg has ever done and the key change coming out of the bridge is just sick. "Shot of Love" hasn't aged well though, sounds pretty geigh, but is the only blemish on a great record that started the whole "D" tuning craze.
ONE OF THE BEST DEBUTS!.......2007-03-15
Kings X sounds like a fully mature band even on this, their first album- it is still one of their best. The songwriting, engineering, and performance are all top notch, and of course, Mr. Pinnicks incredible voice and Ty's ripping guitar always deliver. I've been a fan of King's X since Faith, Hope, and Love came out, but somehow I overlooked their debut until recently- it is now among my favorites! Highly recommended for any fan of melodic rock with a Christian and uplifting message.
An absolute MASTERPIECE........2006-11-08
Kerrang Magazine raved about this new "New age Metal" band from Houston and that is what grabbed my attention. I looked at the cover of the album and the sight of Doug Pinnock with his Mohawk hairdo and Calvary jacket and Jerry Gaskill with his very 80's New Romantics hairstyle kinda made me think "What am I getting into here?". My thoughts were blown away immediately. For once, Kerrang got it right. I had been misled by many of their 'Next BIG thing' predictions, and Kings X shoulda been one of them. I saw Kings X many times on their travels in the U.K. including the Mini Thrash festival (I HATE THRASH)in Brixton with Suicidal Tendancies/M.O.D. (Or was it S.O.D.) and Anthrax. I was lucky enough to leave early and to meet Doug on the Tube on the way home and have a great chat. I also saw Kings X support ACDC at the Wembley Arena, but that was a bit of a mis-match too. The fans only came for the Headliners, and the Houston Trio were not given a hope in Hell. One of the greatest ever gigs I saw however was their debut at the Marquee Club in 1988 shortly after this release. What an amazing show and the response was even overwhelming for the Band. Another Marquee gig the following year in support of Gretchen... followed suit. Kings X toured the U.K. regularly to try and win acclaim, but sadly they remained as an underground Cultish band. Their 1st 4 CDs (OOTSP/Gretchen goes to Hollywood/Faith Hope Love and Kings X) are all highly recommended, but the debut overall is by far the strongest. Gretchen, however, was to prove the most popular. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is not a weak track on the CD, and the production from the so called '4th member' of the group, Sam Taylor, has a major part to play in the amazing quality of sound from this 3 piece. I have a demo of the Pre-Kings X band, Sneak Preview, and here we did get sneak previews of many of the tracks from the album with a raw feel. I probably would have given these guys a miss had this been the final result. The CD opens with the epic "In the new age". A very heavy slow number with crunching guitars which takes us into perhaps Kings X most memorable song "Goldilox". I was at a gig of theirs from around 1999 in Camden where Doug didnt sing a note. The audience did it for him. Very emotional indeed. "Power of Love" is one of my personal favourites with its gentle opening riffs which explodes into pure hard rock heaven. The guitar work is very Powerful here. "Wonder" follows suit. The main reason for the high praise of this album however is the wonderful vocal harmonies. "King", "Far far away" and "Shot of Love" for example are all Top class. "Visions" closes the album, and what a way to close. Another heavyish song that is most noted for its Headbanging and Thrashy element. Why did Kings X not achieve greater success? There are a couple of theories. Maybe it was the media coverage of their Christianity beliefs or just the fact that they were'nt Charasmatic enough or "Dangerous" like their competition at the time i.e. Guns n Roses for starters. They were very nice and humble guys who genuinely love the music. However, things changed in the latter stages of Kings X musical and spiritual life. "Ear Candy" was a huge risk, and the pyschedelic twist did'nt really help their cause. Albums like "Dogman" were heavied up big time. Recent Kings X releases like "Black Like Snake" and "Ogre Tones" cannot touch the feel of their earlier material, and it seems as though GOD is the one who got all the blame, as fans will witness from the "Ogre Tones" album. Basically, Kings X, I believe, peaked on this album. If this was their thid album, say, things could have been a whole lot better. As I said earlier, get this CD first, and take it from there.
Out of this (Silent) world.......2006-05-10
When I first saw "King" on MTV I fell in love with the powerful groove of the band that in the coming years I would come to love more than any other. I instantly relished the opportunity to turn on some of my friends to them, who would also become devoted fans. The music was like nothing I had ever heard before and, despite the influence they have had on the world of hard rock, like nothing I have heard since. The first sign of their uniqueness is their use of drop-D tuning. The added crunch was important to give impetous to their grooves, but unlike most who have used this tuning since, power was not the only thing it added. It gave Ty Tabor the ability to create chordal structures that were truly groundbreaking, making his guitar one of the most unique instruments in rock music. The arrangements as a result were intricate, but the boys made it all fit into the overall structure of the song; the chords fit just right. Doug Pinnick's voice is the heart of the band and on 'Planet' he sings with a gravity that touches your soul but with a freedom that takes you away. The harmonies are unlike any other hard rock band (the only comparison I have ever come up with is CSN).
Finally, the songwriting and lyrical content are amazing. The songs have solid grooves with powerful chord progressions and melodies that are memorable but inventive. The lyrics are more intelligent and positive than any other metal band and probably were the main reason they never got off the ground. They sang about spirituality and real issues in an age where blatant sexual references and satanic posing were the tickets to success.
'In the New Age' begins the album with a strong statement about pseudo-spirituality with a muscular melody playing against snaking guitar lines and almost spooky backing vocals. Goldilox is a love song, one of a very few King's X love songs, of haunting beauty. Then comes three songs that I always take as a set in my mind. 'Power of Love', 'Wonder' and 'Sometimes' are songs of spiritual longing that can make your heart break but since they are so smartly crafted they have are totally devoid of sappy sentimentality. 'Power of Love' is as the title suggests a 'powerful' ode to the meaning of love and one of my all-time favorite songs. 'Wonder' is a song about the band's struggle with how their spirituality fits in to their music and their everyday lives. Then 'Sometimes' comes back with the confidence that their faith finally brings them. 'King' is a song with a groove as big as Mack truck and just as heavy, yet, it is a song of hope for justice. 'What is This?' is an example of how exceptional King's X are at weaving a sound picture. The verses admit the confussion and doubt that a life of faith brings to one in a world that rejects people who are different and the swirling, lurching guitar reflects it. But, then the power of the chorus again brings home the reassurance that faith can still be. 'Far, Far Away' is overshadowed by the other songs on the record but its still a very good one--there simply is not a bad song here. 'Shot of Love', the second single, is probably the best song on the album but shows why they couldn't get very far. How does a record company market a band whose best song references holy communion but shuns the label Christian? Finally, the lyric "The lunatic says goodbye to those who say they love him" from the final cut, 'Visions' is an example of just how different King's X is. Most of the song is a durge that depicts the slow confusion of insanity--which Doug admits he feels sometimes--but then kicks into frantic crazyness that when played live leaves one floored by the band's tightness and control within a seemingly chaotic arrangement.
From top to bottom 'Out of the Silent Planet' is as perfect as you can get. The only possible problem with it is that the sound isn't as polished as it could be, but that was never Producer Sam Taylor's intention anyway. Polish would have gotten in the way of the emotion. This is a band that could make you think and feel, a very rare thing. Though FHL would be their most ambitious album and Dogman would be their most powerful album, this was their most consistanly brilliant album. This one goes to 11.

Living Colour gets all the press, but King's X is actually a far more interesting blend of funk and hard rock. Imagine a power trio composed of Bootsy Collins, Leslie West and Ginger Baker, and you get some idea of the cartoonish but exuberant heavy metal funk served up by King's X on its fifth album, "Dogman." Producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots) has captured the trio's vigorously syncopated rhythms, metallic clash and hooky vocal harmonies with an old-fashioned live feel. The lyrics are comicbook nonsense; the chord changes are pedestrian, and nothing is as memorable as the band's 1990 hit, "It's Love," but "Dogman" reminds you how much raucous fun hard rock used to be before it calcified into a dour, plodding exercise in self-importance. Doug Pinnock's bass puts the boogie back into heavy metal, and guitarist Ty Tabor has finally learned to play rhythmically as well as squealingly.
A far more interesting singer than Corey Glover or James Hetfield, Pinnock proves you can still carry a tune when screaming like Robert Plant. When the three voices soar sweetly above the sonic assault on songs as catchy as "Fool You," "Don't Care" or "Complain," the effect is hard to resist. They close out the album with a manic live version of Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression." --Geoffrey Himes

Ever feel like life's beating you down? King's X knows........2007-05-10
Can I bend your ear (or eyes I guess) for a minute?
You ever feel like life is kicking the crap out of you. The Dogman understands you. He gets you.
Doug, Ty and Jerry lay it all out in soulful verse over pounding drums, sick guitar licks and outrageous bass (Doug plays a 12 string bass like no one I have ever seen). The 12 sting bass should be a requirement but I just think that everyone stays away because no one can do with it what Doug does. He is the poster child for Hamer Basses because he has made their 12 string a thing of lust and desire of bassists around the world; I know, I am one of the lusting bass players that knows I have no prayer of ever pulling this kind of insane bass line on 12 STRINGS! DID YOU HEAR ME? 12 STRINGS! THE GUY IS AWESOME, INCREDIBLE, UNBELIEVABLE, GIFTED BEYOND BELIEF.
There is not one bad song on this album. Not even one that I could classify as a borderline song. This is the most solid album the band produced to date of release and still may be their album of legacy because it just doesn't get any better than this.
The standout track is a standout for one reason only; it is a LIVE VERSION OF "MANIC DEPRESSION". You know, that little diddy that Jimi Hendrix played so well all those years ago. If I didn't know any better, I would think that Jimi came back and sang with King's X for this one show. Doug hits the same blue notes of pain that Jimmy made an artform. What is amazing is that it is LIVE! These guys just make it look too easy. ONE OF THE GREATEST LIVE RECORDINGS BY ANY BAND EVER. OK, next.
"Shoes" deals with the pain that causes people to commit suicide, "Pretend" seems to be directed at pleasing people because the truth just gets you in trouble even if the truth is the best answer, "Flies And Blue Skies" is a blues/rock tune that oozes pain, "Black The Sky" is a cry for peace and quiet, for a chance to be left alone, "Fool You" is hard to call, Doug was dealing with some serious issues with people that take advantage, "Don't Care" kind of says it all, except that there is pain because he doesn't want to let go, "Sunshine Rain" is another blues/rock tune that hurts, beautiful pain, "Complain" just points to the fact that we always have something to bitch about but rarely put it in context, "Human Behavior" speaks of every person's battle with conscience, "Cigarettes" is a cry for attention, a truly sad song if you listen to the words, "Go To Hell" is a quick 30 second blast of loud guitars, bass and drums with lyrics that no one has yet to understand, and finally "Pillow" is a hard hitting cry for sleep in my mind, I feel the pressure because I struggle sleeping because I can't shut my mind down and the wrongs that are done to me each day are a big part of that, tough to let go.
If I had to recommend 1 King's X album, other than their best of which followed the album after Dogman, I would say with 100% assurance that this is the one you have to have. The pain and grief expressed on this album is a mirror through which each of us should look at ourselves.
This album got me through my late teen years. I listened to it, angry at the world. Then, 1 night after I saw them in concert, Doug spoke to me for about 45 minutes and opened up to me about life, love and the pressures of trying to stand up for what you believe in when everyone is kicking you around. We wrote back and forth for several years after and I credit him with helping me to grow up. If you are out there. Thanks Doug. You changed my life.
Classic Album From Unknown Greats.......2007-03-05
King's X has never gotten the success they deserve. Despite an accessible style, great musicianship, and the creation of a unique sound which is widely loved among musicians, they have always struggled upstream in the industry. Dogman is a fine example of their unique and compelling sound which is an excellent place for old fans who are out of touch with their music (like myself) and new fans as well.
Dogman, in many ways, is a straight-forward King's X album, but is becoming a favorite of mine because of it is the kind of album both fans of progressive music and just fans of music in general would enjoy. King's X play a very cool brand of rock music with grooving bass, old-school hard rock vocals with sweet Beatles-esque harmonies, and the inimitable guitar stylings of Ty Tabor, whose tone rivals that of David Gilmour. Incorporating rock, metal, classical and folk with occasional psychedelic and prog rock flourishes, this band is amazing.
Another King's X flavour.......2006-12-27
After GRETCHEN GOES TO ALASKA, this is my 2nd King's X cd. It is considerably heavier, but has the same collection of quality material. Every song takes on a life of it's own after a few listens. This is extremely accessible PROG ROCK ( a genre I am normaly not that fond of ) and the hooks will get you. These are not singalong songs, but after a dozen listens, they might as well be as you find yourself singing along to every track. Add to that the sensational virtuosity of the band and you should be convinced that these guys are criminaly underrated and underapriciated. This defies description and pidgeonholing. Sufice to say: IF YOU LIKE MUSIK, BUY IT!!!!!
You Gotta Love Kings X.......2006-07-02
Although this album is vastly different from earlier more intricate releases such as Silent Planet,Gretchen or even the experimental Ear Candy,it remains in my opinion one of the finest efforts by the band. Many of the songs on this disc would be strong opponents to a lot of the bass driven and groove laden hard rock currently soaking the airwaves. That being said, most of the tunes on Dogman literally blow much newer bands out of the water. The songwriting is a bit more pedestrian this time out, more stripped down than previous undertakings, but overall a very satisfying listen and no other modern group that I can think of can hold a candle to the mighty Kings. I highly recommend this and virtually everything these guys have done, and if you are a newcomer to this band Dogman would be a fine place to begin your journey. I knew of this band for a long time but really only began to seriously listen about 5 years ago, and I can honestly say they are one of my favorite rock groups EVER. I dont think I have ever heard any of their music on the radio, which is just criminal,as there are a veritable plethora of bands currently enjoying major rotation that dont have one iota of the talent of Kings X. Buy this and turn it up,and enjoy!
Absolutly Crushing!.......2006-06-02
This my friends is my favorite kinkg's x cd. This is as crushing as Panteras Vulger display of power, Slayers Reign In Blood, Metellicas Master Of Puppets.
By crushing I mean the overall heaviness of the entire cd. When I first put this on I could not believe how brutal yet melodic it was! Every song fits like a glove. There's no way anyone should give this anything less then 5 stars. Crank it up and tell me Dogman doesn't sound like a giant slamming his feet to the ground crushing everything around him!

Kings X - A Nice Introduction To The Band.......2007-07-17
It has always perplexed me why Kings X has never gotten bigger than they have. The band has consistently put out solid quality music over the years and even seemed poised for mass commercial success with the "Faith Hope And Love" album with it's hit single "It's Love" back in the early 90's. But, for some reason the public never really latched on to Kings X and to this day they are a club level act still plugging away on the concert trail. This compilation covers the band's first 6 albums and for the most part I really like it. Like any compilation there are many deserving songs that are left off, but for someone looking to explore Kings X this is a good place to start. The band really only had one "hit" with "It's Love", but a few of these songs received some level of airplay on rock radio too. Some of my personal favorites include "King", "Goldilox", "Summerland" "Pleiades", "Black Flag", "Lost In Germany", and "Looking For Love". The album also includes a live version of one of the band's most popular songs "Over My Head". I really like the live version and think it is superior to the studio original, but a lot of Kings X fans will disagree with me on that. The CD also contains 3 previously unreleased tracks all of which are good. The song "Sally" may be the best song about groupies ever written. Overall this CD would be a great jumping off point for anyone looking to explore this long underrated band.
Great band, not a great compilation..........2007-06-18
They are great, but they are missing the really groovy songs. I reccomend collecting all the CDs from these guys instead of getting this. You will appreciate it them a lot more.
BEST OF! Unrecognized Musical Genius! DIG IN!!!.......2007-05-10
King's X has a core following, a cult following, and that includes anyone that has heard their music.
See them live, and you will understand what true musical prowess sounds like. This is the loudest, the most talented, the greatest ungreat rock & roll act ever.
Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill are 3 guys from Texas that decided to start making albums back in the 80's. Since that day, they have created a truly unique sound that could only be accomplished by such a talented guitarist, a singer/bassist with pipes built for soul, and a drummer that can hammer louder than 100 roofers on top of your house.
These guys rock. Harmonies abound; the 3 voices mix in a way that you must hear to truly understand.
This album covers the first six releases by the band. It is a compilation of some of their best musical pieces and not necessarily an all-encompassing album. You really just need this to break in to the sound. Go back and get all of the albums after you hear the highlights here, because there are no bad tracks on any of their albums.
This album also includes 3 new songs (previously unreleased) and a live version of their most soulful tune to date, Over my Head.
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THIS WORLD, BUY THIS ALBUM. NOW!
THESE GUYS HAVE BEEN UNAPPRECIATED, UNKNOWN AND UNSUNG FOR FAR TOO LONG!
A good introduction to hard rock's most underrated band .......2006-09-12
The Best of King's X is a good introduction to the most underrated band in hard rock. This collection covers their six albums on Atlantic from 1988's Out of the Silent Planet through 1996's Ear Candy. As with many best-of compilations, most of the best songs are here as well as a few questionable ones. Here is a breakdown of what's included from each album and some comments:
Out of the Silent Planet: "King" and "Goldilox". I can't argue with these selections as they are both the best and most popular songs from the album.
Gretchen Goes to Nebraska: "Summerland" and "Pleiades". First of all, I would recommend all newcomers to buy Gretchen Goes to Nebraska first since this is the band at their very best and the whole album plays like one long highlight. You can't argue with these selections since they are among the most well known. It would have been nice if the studio version of "Over My Head" was included but since the live version from Woodstock '94 is included, I can't complain.
Faith Hope Love: "It's Love", "Mr. Wilson". This is where the band went very poppy. "It's Love" is their most well known track and "Mr. Wilson" is very good. I would have replaced "Mr. Wilson" with "We Are Finding Who We Are" but no big deal.
King's X: "Black Flag" and "Lost In Germany". Although "Black Flag" is the album's most popular song, I would have placed "Prisoner" or "Chariot Song" on here first. "Lost in Germany" is awesome and deserves to be here.
Dogman: "Dogman" and "Cigarettes". "Dogman" is great but I was never a big fan of "Cigarettes." Of all the great songs from this album, I'd probably put "Fool You" on here.
Ear Candy: "The Train", "Looking For Love", and "Life Going By". Both "Looking for Love" and "Life Going By" are great songs and deserve to be here. However, I would have replaced "The Train" with "Mississippi Moon", which is the best song on the album.
As for the unreleased tracks, all three are very cool as "Sally" and "Lover" are both very melodic while "April Showers" shows the band at their funkiest. They're not among their best work but they are not the typical throwaway new tracks you get on best-of collections.
As stated earlier, while I would recommend newcomers to pick up the flawless Gretchen Goes to Nebraska first, Best of King's X is a good introduction to an awesome band and most of the tunes included are among their best work. And if you like what you hear, check out all their other albums. There's not a bad one among them.
Best of Kings' X.......2006-03-13
Not sure if you can only have 14 songs on a best of Kings' X CD. There are so many great songs. Their songs have gotten me through some rough times and some happy times in my life and this was a great collection. I love that there were a couple other songs that are not on any other releases also. They were great.

King's X's Ogre Tones is nothing less than a grand slam. Loaded with the trio's trademark vocal harmonies, Doug Pinnick's patented bass burps, Ty Tabor's signature guitar stylings and Jerry Gaskill's unmistakable rhythmic skills behind the drum kit, this 14-song celebration is both accessible and heavy, somber and inspiring. The band has long been compared to The Beatles and herein lies the proof. The Beatles comparisons are more than simply the ethereal vocals. They're also about Pinnick and Co.'s ability to craft memorable songs, whether the opening stomp "Alone," the rifftastic "Fly," the uplifting rocker "If," or the gorgeous acoustic track "Honesty," which stands as a new career high. Lyrically, the group grapples with issues ranging from death to aging to global unrest with humor and warmth, injecting each song with the perfect balance of levity and curiosity. From beginning to end the Texas-based collective demonstrates its unique ability to bring pop, progressive and heavy rock together into one seamless blend that can only be called King's X. --Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
The legendary trio King's X are widely known as the pioneers of powerful groove rock. Highly respected by critics, adored by their fans and held in high esteem for their excellent instrumental skills by musicians from all areas of music - King's X has a brilliant reputation that is unequalled in this business. The new album Ogre Tones is their first studio album with new material in four years and it is already being touted one of the best in their catalogue. To properly welcome King's X to the IOMA / SPV / RYKO family, Inside Out Music will be implementing its most aggressive marketing/release plan to date. This will feature two promotional video clips that have already been filmed by famed Hip-Hip director, "Dr Teeth", a national commercial radio campaign, a stand-alone consumer advertising campaign and a 6-week North American tour that has been coordinated to begin with the release of the new CD. Ogre Tones was produced and mixed by Michael Wagener (Metallica, Alice Cooper, Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Extreme).
Customer Reviews:
Great New material from KING's X.......2007-01-04
This beats most of anything I hear on ther radio these days. KING's X still creating great Rock that punches right through.
Melodic, soulful vocal harmonies, funky bass, tasty guitar, and a driving drum beat. Yup, that's KING'S X!!.......2006-11-24
King's X's "Ogre Tones" is another masterpiece by this dynamic power trio. The CD is filled with their trademark lush vocal harmonies, Doug's low and funky bass guitar rumble, Ty's melodic and heavy guitar, and Jerry's diverse and driving drum beats.
My personal favorites are: "Stay" (nice vocal harmonies, melodic guitar with a very tasty Ty solo, and a heavy groove), "Hurricane" (nice vocal harmonies, with a pounding bass and tom drum beat), "If" (a soulful, moving "power" ballad, with the vocal harmonies and melodic, arpeggiated guitar), "Bebop" (funky bass, odd timing, and soulful vocals), "Honesty" (nice acoustic ballad sung by Ty), "Open My Eyes" (heavy, melodic tune with some cool riffs), "Mudd" (lush vocal harmonies, heavy/saturated guitar, and Doug's heartfelt lyrics about his uncle who passed away), and "Goldilox (Reprise)" (nice remake of a song on their first CD, and a fan favorite at their concerts).
This legendary band has been around for a long time. To me, they're like a combination of Hendrix, Cream/Clapton, The Beatles, etc., all rolled into one modern, unique power trio, with a sound that's all their own. I've been listening to them since about 1990, after their second CD came out, "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska". Through the years, they've "wowed" me with their epic sounding CDs. "Ogre Tones" is no different. The CD has been out for awhile, but I still listen to it constantly.
And, seeing the band live is a real treat. Their powerful sound sucks you in from the first rumble of Doug's bass.
If you appreciate a power trio with melodic, soulful vocal harmonies, funky bass, melodic and heavy guitar, a powerful, driving drum beat, and incredible individual skills and character, I think you'll enjoy "Ogre Tones" by King's X.
A return to hard rock.......2006-10-17
After becoming very experimental on their previous releases, the excellent Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous and the uneven Manic Moonlight, King's X 2005 release, Ogre Tones, is a return to the melodic hard rock that earned the band its greatest fame. While the band had released both a live album, Live All Over the Place, and Black Like Sunday, which consisted of newly recorded versions of songs they wrote in the `80s during the interim, Ogre Tones would be the band's first album of new material in four years. The time away from each other concentrating on solo projects is evident in this release as the band hasn't sounded this hungry since 1994's Dogman album. Many fans have called Ogre Tones a return to glory, placing it alongside Gretchen Goes to Nebraska as their best album. While it's not quite that good, Ogre Tones is a strong album that shows the band's strong musicianship and harmonies intact while debuting a noticeable maturity in the songwriting on the album's second half.
The album's opener "Alone" is a scorching yet melodic rocker with both bassist Doug Pinnick and guitarist Ty Tabor trading lead vocals. This track, along with the mid-tempo "Stay", the ballad "If", and the poppy "Hurricane", are all very solid tracks. "Fly" is a very strong track with Doug singing over a wicked riff in the verses while the rest of the band joins in on the choruses. And while "Bebop" sounds like an attempt at rock radio with both Pinnick's yells of yesteryear as well as the vocal hook from Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti", it's still not bad. The album reaches its fruition beginning with the beautiful "Honesty", a Ty Tabor acoustic track that reminds you of "The Difference", only more melancholy. The grungy rockers "Open My Eyes", "Freedom", and "Get Away" are all strong tracks as the former deals with the rage that builds within us while "Freedom" and "Get Away" questions man's faith in God amidst all the hypocrisy and sadness that exists in the world. Yes, that's right. The band, whose music has been called Christian rock in some circles, has now come to the conclusion that the ultimate belief is in yourself. The tracks "Sooner Or Later" and "Mudd" are also very good tracks that deal with personal loss. The long ride out on "Sooner Or Later" features a very cool atmospheric guitar solo that just captures you. The remake of their own track "Goldilox", which is sung in a lower register, is very good, although it doesn't quite touch the original. The final track, "Bam", continues the recent tradition of putting a throwaway at the end of the album (see "Walter Bela Farkas" from Tape Head). All told, Ogre Tones is another fine album from King's X that shows the band returning to their hard rock roots while exploring a different path spiritually. Definitely worth checking out.
Give this a chance..........2006-08-27
King's X has been one of my favorite pet bands since I first heard Goldilox on a college radio station shortly after their first release. Since then I have eagerly waited for each release, rarely been disappointed, and always gratefully rewarded.I was planning to buy this anyway, but was hesitant after reading some of the reviews. First of all,can we please all stop wishing that they'd remake your own personal favorite disc? Do you really want that? Yes, Gretchen's my favorite too, but they've already been there/done that. I was,at first,a bit let down that Ogre Tones wasn't what I expected. The songs were fairly short by KX standards, and there weren't too many extended instrumental breaks. OK, I thought, they're going for a different direction on this one. I realized after a few listens that there was something there that drew me in. I now realize that each song would not have sounded out of place on any of their more recent releases. So while perhaps not fulfilling the total disc continuity of some of our favorites, the songs stand on their own merits and in my opinion deliver the quality the fans want. I am not surprised that King's X fans, who by virtue of their excellent taste, are extremely discerning...but c'mon, give these guys a break. This is not some thrown together crap. They are not trying to appeal to MTV et al,so even if it isn't like your favorite, please give it a chance. I know I hated Mr. Bulbous at first, then I happened to have it on a long drive and I finally got into it. If nothing else, let's support these guys who've given us so much, and if you've ever been to one of their concerts you have felt the love they have for us fans. You should find that you like the songs individually even if as a whole it lacks a concept or common thread.
King's X definetly underrated but loved by the lucky!.......2006-07-26
These guys have it all, musicianship, talent, stamina and creativity. That is why you probably wont hear them on the radio....name me one station (they are all corporately owned these days) that plays creative music that is actually written and performed by musicians?
Buy this CD...you will love it. Buy Dogman, buy Tape Head, buy them all....you will become one of the lucky who will come to love and appreciate King's X.
Rock on Ty, dUg and Jerry!
