Customer Reviews:
Like Spinal Tap But Better.......2006-01-26
If you're over 12, you've probably grown out of this and are investing your money on more grown up things like acne cream.
What a pity! Because I find Skyclad's brand of folk-tinged prog-thrash, with teen-angst lyrics about the impending doom of the Universe delightful in the same way Spinal Tap or Iron Maiden at their most overblown were.
Lyrics that ignore the Eternal Feminine (babes, chicks, etc.) and novel touches like mandolins and acoustic guitars played over the more basic rock elements, mark them out as a band striving to create their own unique musical universe, in which songs like "A Word to the Wise" and "Cry of the Land" can exist on their own terms as epics.
Unique folk-thrash!.......2004-12-16
Skyclad is another band on the long list of underappreciated and relatively little known musicians, who deserved so much more than that. "Jonah's Ark" is their third album that continues their shift from heavy mid-tempo thrashing sound into more mellow folksy territories. The band's style is still more thrash than anything else, but it is actually their last truly metal album.
Skyclad sound is hard to describe, as they are so much unlike others. But you'll learn to instantly recognize Martin Walkyier's poisonous raspy vocals, and their trademark violin, which gained more time and place on "Jonah's Ark" than it had on its predecessor. This album is impressively diverse. It starts out with a violin and a mandolin intro, which changes to a thrashing guitar riff of "Thinking Allowed", one of the best songs here. "Cry of the Land" is another highlight. Written in a 3/4 time signature, it presents the band's unusually mellow playing, with many acoustic guitars, and a dominating violin, perhaps, for the first time in their discography. From there on the music gets darker, heavier and thrashier, with complex rhythm patterns, heavy guitars and raspy singning, with occasional acoustic interludes. The violin is always present, either adding melodic licks to the background, or leading the band. Track #6, "Earth Mother, The Sun and the Furious Host", is the strongest of the bunch. It is a fast medieval dance played with thrash-metal riffing and some raspy singing. A clear descendant from the previous album's "Spinnig Jenny", which was also a mind-blowing song! "Tunnel Visionaries" is a brief narative track. "Bewilderbeast" shows how to turn a flamenco guitar into a thrash-metal riff. The final track provides a very unexpected soft conclusion to this, rather heavy album.
Throughout the album Martin Walkyier treats us with his great lyricist skills. He has an amazing command of the language, and I consider him to be metal's best poet.
Following Skyclad's career, I can say that "Jonah's Ark" is their first album which showed how to seamlessly integrate violin in a heavy texture of thrash-metal. This album was excitingly unusual when it was out, and, while not the very best that Skyclad put out, it is still a collection of very good songs from the true pioneers of folk-metal sound.
