4 out of 5 stars An album brimming with potential........2007-05-26

Proof's second full-length album, Searching For Jerry Garcia, was released in 2005; a year before his untimely death. I didn't check out this release until last year, after Proof had already lost his life; I was never too big on his work in D12, and neither he nor Bizarre(who both had albums come out within a small span of time) interested me enough to pick up their albums. Following his passing, all of the praise this album received wasn't surprising, but as someone who'd never listened to it, it seemed like another matter of a deceased artist getting unwarranted acclaim; I had to check for myself to see how it faired.

Initially, it didn't click with me. Having been inspired by the recent influx of Detroit-styled underground hip-hop coming out lately(J Dilla's extensive recordings, Black Milk, Phat Kat, etc), I decided to revist this album lately, and I must say, this album is highly dope. It's got a very non-Shady sound to it; in fact, its influences are heavily rooted in the Detroit underground scene. Funk, soul, and traditional hip-hop are all represented thoroughly on this album musically; and Proof rhymes over these dope beats with equally potent rhymes. If anyone ever thought Proof was a two-trick pony, relying only on D12's horrorcore and goofy antics, those beliefs are proven terribly wrong on this release.

Tracks like Forgive Me(which features a hypnotizing 50 hook) and Kurt Cobain reveal Proof's introspective, and brooding personality to the masses. In retrospect, it's awfully depressing that Proof was as obsessed with death as he was, but this style of paranoid influenced hip-hop has long been a staple of hip-hop since the murders of 2Pac and B.I.G. It's not all about melancholic, and angst ridden hip-hop though; Proof delivers some of the finest acid-influenced rap in recent memory. Gurls Wit Da Boom and Purple Gang are two of the finest examples of this, as they're funky anthems that any hip-hop head, no matter how cynical, should be able to get down and groove with.

Rest assured, there's plenty of the gun-toting rhymes abound on this release. Proof's complexity as a lyricist, and reflective personality make these all the more effective though. Unlike most emcees, Proof didn't beliedidn't believe he was invincible, and knew the end would inevitably come one day. Unfortunately, it came far too soon for Proof, as he never got his big break as a solo artist during his life time. Proof's Searching For Jerry Garcia is a very ill album overflowing with skills and potential; it's only a shame that potential was never fully realized, and now, never will be. While not flawless, nor classic, Searching For Jerry Garcia is certainly an album worth adding to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-02-15

Proof's lp "Searching For Jerry Garcia" is a great release. He's got some really fresh stuff on here, and I'm actually glad that he released this on his own record label rather than on Shady Records. Since it was released on his own label, I didn't know what to expect, especially production wise. But, I don't think any of the beats fall short, and they all match Proof's rough and tough vocal tone. Proof had something pretty good to offer, I've also heard much of his underground stuff which is also very good as well. Best track is easily Kurt Kobain. It's a shame he passed on as early as he did, but he left us good music to remember him by.

3 out of 5 stars good album, stolen beat.......2006-09-05

i dig this cd, proof kept some quality in the mainstream hip hop scene, may he rest in peace. but my biggest problem with this album is the last song "kurt kobain." the beat is straight up stolen from an atmosphere song (the woman with the tatooed hands) produced by ant, that was released in 2002. sampling is one thing, but ripping beats that have already been done is not cool.

4 out of 5 stars I Miss The Hip Hop Shop.......2006-09-03

I just gotta say that out of D-12, Proof really was the illest MC. I have the UNDERGROUND EP, I have I MISS THE HIP HOP SHOP, and trust even back when he was killin it. For Proof fans or fans of Rap music, go out and cop it. Its a very good listen.

4 out of 5 stars RIP Proof........2006-08-10

great album. not a classic. but a great album from beginning to end. it only shows the potential he had. and what music he could have done with more promotion and production on a major deal. those things we will never know. but i do know that this is must have album in its own way. RIP PROOF

    Product Description

Inside a newly built recording studio nestled in the suburban hinterlands of his native Detroit, multi-platinum-selling rap star PROOF fusses over a desktop computer containing snippets from his upcoming debut solo album, “Searching 4 Jerry Garcia”. Pointing and clicking furiously, the lanky MC glances back and forth from the monitor to the friends who have arrived to listen to tracks from his newest musical offering. He frowns at the screen, then grins an apology to his audience. “I got love for ya, you know I do,” he says, turning back to the Macintosh, “but I need to make sure this sounds right. You know me. I can’t let you hear it if it doesn’t sound right.” PROOF refuses to take his work lightly, even in the confines of his own studio, even among the staff and supporters who’ve cheered his long climb to rap super stardom. He won’t showcase any less than his best, not even in a leisurely sitting. A decade and a half since the member of the hit group D-12 began his ascent into the spotlight, PROOF figures he still has plenty to… well… prove. “I want to show that you can talk about more than one thing in hip-hop. Rapping about cars and your Rolex is played out,” says the MC. “You can be different and still be successful.” For this, he stands as living PROOF. Collaborating with D12’s DJ, Salam Wreck, Proof rips though track after track produced by some of the top Beat-smiths in the game. Producers Eminem, Mr. Porter, Reef, Sicknotes, and Salam Wreck himself, all lend Proof a helping hand with the production. “This mixtape really shows a more serious and dark-side of Proof then what people will hear on the upcoming “Searching 4 Jerry Garcia” album, which is due to hit streets this summer,” remarks DJ Salam Wreck while planted in front SSL 8000G at FBT Studios. Being the guide through this tour, Salam scratches, mixes and manipulates the music from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars a lot of people don't like this one but it's one of my favorites.......2007-07-31

Iron Fist is the closing chapter in one phase of Motorhead's history. It marks the last album with Fast Eddie (who also produced this one), and a lot of fans, even Lemmy himself, have said they don't care much for this album. Personally I don't understand why there are complaints. Perhaps it's frowned upon because it was the end of an era. Maybe because of the environment in which it was recorded- turmoil, fights, management issues, band member issues, increased drug use, musical differences, and trying to follow up their most successful album yet in Ace of Spades- maybe all of that makes it a bad memory for Lemmy.

It could be because Iron Fist was the first Motorhead song I ever heard back in 1982 (and it's still my favorite song) but I absolutely love this CD and consider it the band's 2nd best studio effort behind Over Kill. This album rocks and contains many classics in the Motorhead arsenal. I highly recommend checking out this fairly unpopular release and decide for yourself if it is essential M'Head. I think it is!

Highlights: title track, Heart of Stone, Sex & Outrage, America, Speedfreak

4 out of 5 stars Fast Eddie Fans must have this one!.......2007-07-11

This album gets a bad wrap: yea, its not Ace Of Spades, but it is the last of the Fast Eddie era Moterhead.

The tune Iron Fist is a great song, and worth it for that one alone. This is definitly a fans album, but remember that this one made the top 6 on the British charts when it came out (so its not as bad as some reviews suggest). This album is not the "Mr Roboto" (a stinker of an album) of Motorhead, but definitly not their very best effort. Also, its not the worst they did: you can hear classic Eddie in this album, and Phil and Lemmy do a great job on this as well.

They sound like they were on the verge of becoming more like Saxon and Iron Maiden, and less like a band of Soccer holligan drunks playing late 70s thrash. There IS a refinement, but less 'innovative'. Its hard to say if Lemmy did not do the 'Stand by Your Man' thing with Wendy O, Eddie would not have left the band (who knows). They would not be the first band of good musicians that started to make it who shot themselves in the rear with bickering and lack of direction. Most of my music friends who are good would also blow it (in time) if they made it - it must go with the territory.

This album was released when the band was at their worst, imploding from the stress of thier success. If you go to Fast Eddies web site, even he trashes this album, but that may be more to do with the memory of what was going on in the band when they split up (how many people watch wedding videos and go over their wedding albums after a divorse 'to savor the memories??').

The Iron Fist tour was going bad, and tensions were rising (a rift formed in the Phil/Lemmy and Eddie camps). They tried to save money in getting Eddie to do the album and found out they should have paid the money, and all of them distance themselves from this album. Its so funny that in spite of that, its still pretty good. And it did well in the charts.

If you are collecting albums, this one has to be you buy. Just watch Iron Fist on Youtube and you will buy this album (but buy Ace of Spades, Overkill, and Bomber FIRST).

4 out of 5 stars Last of the "Fast Eddie" era .......2006-02-21

Motorhead are a rock and roll legend. From their bruising beginnings to current status as hard rockin' Godfathers, Lemmy and company have stayed true to their roots and have prospered at least well enough to stay on the road and make albums.
The first Motorhead incarnation remains, to many, the classic line-up with Lemmy Kilmister on bass and (ahem) vocals, Philthy Animal Taylor on drums and Fast Eddie Clarke on guitars. Fast Eddie is the key ingredient to the classic crash and burn Motorhead sound that gave us the immortal "Ace Of Spades" and earlier platters like "Overkill" and "Bomber". Clarke's style, a thick blues and riff heavy attack gave Motorhead their distinctive hooks, much needed amid the bombast.
"Iron Fist", Clarke's last effort with the band, followed on the heels of "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith", the classic live album. Following this album was no easy task, but thanks to Clarke's slightly cleaner production, "Iron Fist" is a classic. My edition includes live performances on a second CD.
The hooks and humor are there, including "I'm The Doctor", "I'm A Loser" and "Don't Need Religion", a topic near and dear to Kilmister's heart.
"Iron Fist" may pale a little in the shadow of "Ace Of Spades", but then again, nobody could top that outing. A fine effort from a great rock and roll band.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have...or DIE!!!.......2005-08-16

I've seen very mixed reviews on this album so I decided to speak up. Some claim that this is just a very mediocre album while others put in on an altar. I chose the latter. This album is not good...it is EXTREMELY good. Too good for its own good (the band has had trouble in making such a consistent album ever since). IRON FIST was produced by MOTORHEAD guitarist Fast Eddie Clark, thus the guitar sounds here in are polished but remain loud and raw. Same goes for Lemmy's bass. Just check the intro for the title song. When I heard it, I though I was hearing a "guitar"!!! And Phil's drumming is at its most intense. On latter period albums like "1916" or "Rock 'n Roll" he has yet to match the intensity of his drumming on IRON FIST. It seems to me that MOTORHEAD were paying close attention to the bands they helped spawned at the time. GBH, DISCHARGE, EXPLOITED, although decidely punk bands, had a VERY close sound to MOTORHEAD. They also played fast and noisy but lacked the solos. I Think IRON FIST was a response to that and it's the reason why this album remains probably their fastest to date. The songs themselves are extremely catchy and memorable and the lyrics are, as always, phenomemnal. From the angry sneer of "Don't let'em grind ya down" to the vengeful, "Heart of Stone" to the hardcore freight train of "Sex And Outrage", IRON FIST is a consitent album through and through. This especial edition CD features some interesting b-sides that are musts for all MOTORHEAD fans.
This was one of the very first heavy metal album's I've ever heard and who would've known that this band was the blueprint for dozens of hardcore punk bands around the world?!?! Exceptional album. Go buy it RIGHT NOW!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Motorhead - 'Iron Fist' (Metal-Is) 3 1/2 stars.......2005-06-01

Originally released in 1982,as this was their seventh lp as well as the follow-up to the notorious 'Ace Of Spades' landmark album.'Iron Fist' also marks the final vinyl appearance with guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke.I know it may sound bleak, but believe me,it's not near as bad as it sounds.Memorable cuts here include the title track "Iron Fist","Heart Of Stone","Loser" and "Speed Freak".There's five(5)bonus tunes tagged on to lure you to purchase this reissue. Some fine British '80's metal to be fully taken in,if you can handle it.I just KNEW 'Ace Of Spades' would be quite difficult to match.

        4 out of 5 stars Very fine!!!.......2002-05-16

The last Motorhead album with the classic line-up featuring Fast Eddie Clarke on guitars. It's a very good album. Lemmy's voice seldom sounded so great like in this one.
But, after a foolish argument between Lemmy and Clarke, Clarke left forever. A shame.... But Motorhead went on and on!!

4 out of 5 stars NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION !!!.......2001-11-18

This was the last MOTORHEAD album featuring Fast Eddie Clarke, who went on to try to obtain commercial mainstream success forming the dreadful FASTWAY. IRON FIST is solid record, better produced than its predecesors, the masterpieces ACE OF SPADES, BOMBER and OVERKILL. There are twelve songs, each of one them very good. Taylor's drumming is at peak form here.

4 out of 5 stars Last album with Fast Eddie, good stuff.......2000-06-17

This is the last album to feature the 'classic' Motorhead line-up, and ends up being another good, but not classic, Motorhead album. It's hard to say why this one doesn't have the same sonic impact as Ace of Spades, Hammersmith, Bomber, or Overkill. Probably the production, which in Fast Eddie's hands is a bit muted. The songs are great, but it's about this time in the band's career when you realize you've heard all you're ever gonna here from 'em. So you could reasonably say this is the last Motorhead album you need to buy, although subsequent albums have gems worth checking out. Stand out tracks include "Go to Hell", "Sex and Outrage", and of course "Iron Fist"

4 out of 5 stars Motorhead - 'Iron Fist &The Hordes From Hell' (Cleopatra).......2004-10-08

I was going to give this CD a three star rating, but I decided to give it four stars for two reasons.First, the newly done(for THIS release anyway)cover and the fact that I thought the live nine track gig sounds better that it did when it was ORIGINALLY put out on a $2.99 cassette under the title 'What's Words Worth?'.'Iron Fist...' was recorded at a gig the band played at the Roundhouse on February 18,1978 with,of course the classic Motorhead line-up of Lemmy on bass/vocals,Fast Eddie Clarke on guitar and Philthy Animal Taylor on drums.Make no mistake, this is pure vintage Motorhead and I honestly can believe there's nothing quite like it.The better tunes are "The Watcher"(sounds different than when Lemmy penned this tune for Hawkwind at the time),"Iron Horse/Born To Lose","I'm Your Witch Doctor" and "City Kids"(which used to be a Pink Fairies tune). There are even four pages of liner notes from acclaimed music critic Dave Thompson. You know, the one that's usually tough on all bands.

3 out of 5 stars Lemmy has no groove, yet..........2000-06-17

It may have been a glimpse of the future at the time, but by today's standards (and Motorhead's) it just falls flat. It has some high points, but most of it is just drunk wailing. If you like that kind of thing. It's the calibre of your average bar band. I give it 3 stars, because I can't give it 2.5 .

          Album Description

2 CD set. The first disc features Iron Fist, which is another barrage of Motorclassics with production this time overseen by guitarist 'Fast' Eddie Clarke and Will Reid Dick. Unfortunately the album also saw the classic Motorhead line-up of 'Fast' Eddie (guitars), Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister (bass/vocals) and Phil (Philthy Animal) Taylor (drums) also splintering soon after, as Clarke took his leave citing 'musical differences' as grounds for his departure. Iron Fist, nevertheless, is a twelve-fingered mutation of an album with a clutch of gem studded tracks like 'Heart Of Stone', 'Go To Hell', 'Loser', and of course the title track all reaching out to squeeze the living breath from all those who dare to hop aboard the Motorhead express. The second disc features single b-sides, alternative versions, outtakes, rarities, BBC Session and In-Concert material as well as live tracks. Sanctuary. 2005.
