As is apparent from the listing above, this CD is a selection of songs from many of the leading female singers of the 80s and 90s. (A few odd absences include the Go-Gos, Olivia Newton-John, Scandal, Stevie Nicks, and Blondie, especially considering that less commercially-successful artists such as Michelle Shocked, Vonda Shephard, and Belly are featured.)

The appeal of a compilation CD is that you can get songs by "one-hit wonders" without having to shell out for a bunch of lame songs. Obviously, this depends on your individual tastes, but, for example, "Kiss Me Deadly" is the only Lita Ford song I've heard that I've liked, and not enough to get an entire Ford album.

A few other oddities: "The French Song" by Joan Jett rather than "I Love Rock and Roll;" "She-Bop" by Cyndi Lauper rather than "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."

The CD liner contains some small pictures of the artists (but no identifying caption for any of them) and background text about the artists. However, some of the artists are covered in literally one throw-away sentence, so this is not a place to learn a lot about the singers.

This album is titled very accurately. It was not released as an album, per se. This was the labels side release to highlight, or show off the band. If you've heard some Caedmon's Call, and want to know more about them, this is the disc for you.

It is a short album (with only 5 tracks), but is an interactive cd, with information on the band members, some band history, and their music video for "Hope to Carry On", written by the late Rich Mullins (who actually makes an appearance in the video).

If you've never heard Caedmon's Call before, this album could be a great introduction to the band. If you're a fan, it's a must have for the collection.

This album truly allows the listener to see into Caedmon's Call -not only through the Enchanced CD option, but also because the lyrics are so honest. Although the CD doesn't really contain any loud songs, the collection on this album is consistent and true. I heard Intimate Portrait after I'd already come to love 40 Acres, and I think that's the way to do it...listen to the other Caedmon's works first and then come to Intimate Portrait. Your listening of the latter will benefit from a comprehensive sense of Caedmon's theology and context. Once you get to Intimate Portrait, you'll love it - "Bus Driver" is just plain fun; "April Showers" and "The Truth" dig deep; and "Hope To Carry On" really does carry on the Rich Mullins' legacy. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Christian Music that Really Rocks.......2000-10-06

This is a great intro to Caedmon's Call, and contains two of my favorite songs by them. My two favorites are "April Showers", and "Hope to Carry On" (probably their most popular song). The other three songs are also outstanding, "Pieces of Glass" is a beautiful piece. The violin and female vocals are a great contrast on the CD too. This CD is enhanced, and can be used in the computer. It give you access to some sounds, images, and really cool videos of the band. I highly recomend this CD to people looking for a new Christian band, interested in Caedmon's Call, or Caedmon's Call Fans.

This CD by Caedomn's Call is a very Intellectual and beautifully written album. Caedmons call combines a folk acoustic rock sound with a variety of instraments. This CD is great as well as their others. Be warned - Their CDs are addictive. They won't leave your CD player very often. ("Center Aisle" happons to be my favorite Caedmons Call song and is one of their best songs when you find the meaning of it. Look at the lyrics packet that came with the CD. It will explain to you the meaning of this very powerful song.)

4 out of 5 stars Finally... A Collection for Women That Speaks to Your "Soul".......2002-07-13

This is not soul music, but it IS music with lots of "soul". All songs are performed by the original artist, and each will make even the most die hard stoics sing aloud sans fear of being heard!!!! The inclusion of Gladys Knight was brilliant. She is a star whose fame has been lost to the nouveau likes of Aguilera and Spears. But make no mistake about it, listening to each one of these artists makes one realize the valuable contribution she has made to the music industry as a whole. This collection proves that women musicians are a force to be reckoned with, and proud of. I only wish they included Whitney Houston and Diana Ross.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not sure if it's soul, but I like it.......2001-08-11

I got this collection for Vanessa Williams 'Dreamin' and Soul II Souls 'Back To Life'. After listening to the entie CD however, I found that it was a suprisingly stong collection. It's called Women of Soul, but most of this is not soul music in the classic sense. It is however top notch dance, funk and pop with a dash of soul. The CD booklett does a nice job of giving a short bio for each artist as well as the songs highest position on the R&B charts.

I didn't give it 5 stars because of the misleading title and including Dionne Farris (that song is so annoying). Also it was a little short and should've included two or three more songs. But really, at this price you can't go wrong with this strong collection of songs.

            I bought this CD for Roseanne Cash's wonderful song Seven Year Ache and I was very pleased to find that one of my favorite country singers Patsy Cline is also featured on this CD with her fantastic song Walkin' After Midnight, other great songs are Loretta Lynn's Don't Come Home A'Drinkin' (With Lovin" On Your Mind), and Pam Tillis' Cleopatra, Queen Of Denial, plus many other good songs. If you love country music than I highly recommend this excellent CD, and even if you aren't into country music you still might like this CD, it's awesome!
